Making money off variegated versions of plants is out of control. So many look terrible when variegated. Well, I say, “Go ahead!” The plants I like will be even more affordable! Loving my green. Thanks, Drew, for saying what needs to be said.
The only ones that are variegated in my collection are the pothos varieties. Most others are just too high priced. I'm on a tight budget, so buying super expensive plants is a no.
Ok I legit aspirated coffee all over my computer when you said Milk Syngonium looked like someone aspirated pepto! I have one and I like it but that will forever be an image I can't unsee. 🤣🤣🤣
Apart from the fact that I’d never spend more than a hundred euros on a plant because they can randomly die even in the ideal care conditions, I don’t think I will ever buy a plant that looks sick by default. I need to be able to tell. A plant should not stress me out if it’s not actually struggling!
I agree 100%! Many of these would make me think, "Oh! Is it OK? Is it supposed to look like this? Hm!" I would actually run far away from that Monstera laniata 'Mint', thinking that it had spider mites. Just looking at the picture made my skin crawl.
I couldn't agree with you more, Drea.....it's ridiculous out there in the planty world. There are so many hybrids out there that it's crazy where some of the plantuber's aren't even sure what the plants are named. Some of the companies just feel like renaming a plant to make you feel like it's "NEW" on the market. When will it stop on the pothos as well? How many do we need and many just revert back so what's the point, anyways? Love this segment getting all of our opinions heard. We need more of this :))
For me it was the extreme hype of Monstera albo. It became a real status symbol on my local plant group at the height of the pandemic. You weren’t one of the cool kids if you didn’t have one. It was like the Louis Vuitton purse of the plant world! I thought they could be attractive with the right variegation pattern, but not $300 per cutting attractive!
RPF in Detroit has Rollis. They are definitely on my "nope, will kill" list too. They look weird every time they show them on lives, but they're healthy looking weird things.
Hi,new to my house plant journey.🤦🏼♀️So glad you are saying something, because I was like “ are these plants sick? I am from Florida (41yrs) and we moved to KC, Kansas and now all of my tropical plants that lived outdoors for years and years are now indoors. I’m new to all of these “rare” 🤣Plants….
🎯💯!!! Can't agree with this more! Tbh, I'm a bit over the varigation hype. I didn't start getting into plants until about 2 yrs ago (empty nest syndrome?) so I missed the "pink craze". Just about the only mostly pink plants I like are some Syngoniums & Caladiums, which I can't wait to wake mine up soon!!💚✌🏽💗
I am so glad I didn’t get a Pink Princess. I now look at them and they are not pretty plants. Most owners don’t grow it well and it ends up looking like a hot mess
I agree with most of what you are saying regarding the sickly look of many varigated plants. I do have a pink princess from the first batch and it has all those terrible traits you mentioned. I am chopping it today as the spaces between the petioles are way to long to make an attractive climber. It is currently on a 3ft moss pole, partly attached. I do however have a milk confetti which has lots of pink splash on it. The splashing seems to be dependent on receiving high light. Good video.
Hi Drea! I.have had Pink Princess and they are soooo Annoying°° I just let 2 peacefully go to Plant Heaven!!!! And another one soon to follow! I wasnt aware there was a Marble Pink Princess so i will be on Watch for that One!! Loved this video as i love all your videos! You are always upfront and honest about everything! I know eh? They definitely do stress me out too! And I wish mine would have grown bushy! It just got leggy! They were getting enough sun and water. I.just don't know. Hmmm. I'm on the lookout for that Marble one! Thanks girls!!!
Omg girl, you totally cracked me up 😂😂 I agree 100% on all the plants you brought up. Way to many variegations that make a plant look like It's sick, rather then beautiful. Just love this video and would love more of these 😎😁❤️
Completely agree with all the plants you showed. Ive seen other plant video folks ooh and aah over a few of them and had questiined their taste. Please show more and please do a tissue culture video. Love your hair !!!! Take care.
I agree with you on the Monstera Mint I would have passed that up in a heartbeat thinking it was unhealthy and for $230 no thanks. I do like the Syngonium Pink Confetti. I saw a whole bunch when doing my Plant Tour at a Nursery yesterday, but they do not talk to me. The pink princess wow I agree. I bought one in December 2023 when I first started getting into the tropical “rare” plants and honestly I bought it out of pure “internet buzz excitement”. I cannot stand poles and I didn’t know that when I bought it 😂, so I chopped it down and it’s now a bushy pink princess in water. If you’re interested I have a video up on it and another one coming because I cannot get it right. 😂 I have pink princess regret right now, but maybe that will change 😅.
I haven't encountered many of the plants you discussed but syngoniums! So many of those with pink are unappealing to me because they look brownish and on death's door. That being said I rescued a variety of unnamed pink syngonium and, in the right light, it actually looks pretty. I just don't put it where it looks more brown.LOL. That's the only sygonium I will buy with pink.
I have two “pinkish” Syngonium that I love; a neon robusta and a Bob allusion. They are not so pink they cause problems or look bad, but the neon robusta can look a little brown if it doesn’t get enough light.
Oh my gosh, I totally feel this way about any Amydrium...why would anyone want to own a plant that looks perpetually diseased? I have NEVER seen one that appeals to me and don't understand the hype. As for the pink princess, I don't know what iteration I own, but I didn't acquire it during the "first wave"; I got it later, at Walmart, of all places, for a really decent price. It isn't marbled but the variegation is beautiful. However, it has problems sizing up, unfurling, and climbing. Coincidentally, I planned on chopping it back TODAY, and starting over, thinking, just maybe, my care was the problem...but maybe its not me. I 'm not willing to throw in the towel just yet. Since we are going into the growing season here in the US, I'm giving it the summer to improve and I'll wait until the fall to make a decision about keeping it...and I would really love a red anderson, but I have never seen them in shops near me in Ohio. Great video, Drea, thank you once again!
I agree and I love your way of dealing with this subject(all subjects actually ❤).Everything else has already been written in previous comments. Thanks for your time and stay well💚
Oohhh...I was with you until the black cardinal. I love those muted colors. 😂 and now we're just downhill. Strawberry ice has gorgeous variegation! It comes in cream and fades to pink. Blood is not pink. Lol.
Absolutely agree! I'm not a pink girl as a baseline but definitely not when the pink makes the green look muddy! I *might* consider a pink varigation if the green part is actually green. Not mud brown. I do love mint green but it has to look mint, uniform with a blueish tint, and not just sickly green... That said, there is NO WAY I'm going to spend triple digits, or even high double digit on a plant!!! Case in point, I've wanted a Monstera albo for 5+ years but the prices were ridiculous. I finally got mine 8 months ago for 25€ (20 US$) for an established, 5-leaf, plant. Any trending plant, assuming it's healthy enough to be cultivated to mature size, will come down in price. Just wait. If you still want it three years down the line, then get it. If it never makes it to mass market then it's because there's something wrong with it.
I agree with you. Hate the pink Princess, mine is mostly brown, leaves that don’t unfurl,Grrrr! I’ve propagated it multiple times and still same. Milk confetti is same, there’s a pink dot here and there! Lots of problems with variegated plants, they mostly end up reverting back. I’m much more selective about all the new plants that come out,I want to see pictures of them when mature to be convinced. Great video.💚🪴
I do like pink princess plants, one i bought had reverted and i love it. There is nothing wrong with not liking this but i wIted for the price to come down. Some of the minty plants do look sick. Thank you Drea.
I love variegated plants. I don't think they look sick. Just differently colored, unless not enouth chlorophylle so it stay stuck in a certain size. But you're right for the pink on as a 2 leafs weird thing. This look real sick in a bad way.
"It looks like a plant that got beat up." 😂 I would add the philodendron painted lady to this list for the same reasons as all of these. It looks diseased and I don't get it!
Interesting video and I agree with your comment that the plants look sick. Typically if something doesn’t look right, it’s not right ….. for whatever reason. There are some fads or looks that I’m okay with missing out on. 🤣. Take care and happy growing! 👌🪴🥰
I do like the strawberry ice and would love to own one! I agree on the variegated melano, looks sick to me also but the milk confetti has such an unusual color of green that I think it’s pretty, the pink isn’t what makes the plant but the color of the green. I have to disagree on the PPP being a climber, mine is well rooted into its moss pole and the leaves are huge but I never really thought they were worth the money people paid for them in the beginning. I also have the marbled variety and it’s much prettier. I’ve never heard of nor have I seen that last plant…it’s awful!! Thanks for an interesting video!❤️
Fully agree. And you forgot two more monstrosities - Pothos Shangrila, which also doesn't unfurle, and the Mostera Monkey Mint, which has the awful combination of sick color and fenestrated leaves, and looks twice as sick as the others.
A lot of the yellow variegated plants look unhealthy to me. I’d add the Philodendron Caramel Marble together with the Cardinal you mentioned but I can understand why some people find this type of variegation appealing. It looks a bit like perpetual autumn leaves, which I like autumn colours… Another one that looks unwell to me is the Monstera Obliqua but again, to each their own. It would be boring if everyone’s plant collections looked the same 🤷🏻♀️
I thought about putting the Carmel marble on the list but when they have high variegation they can actually be quite stunning so I decided not to pick on it this time💚
I LOVED THIS!!! 😂 Honestly, I totally agree with you on everything. I don't even like the regular varigated monstera, because it is in my opinion, sick. Unless its stable varigation, I really dont like it.
I bought a marbled pink princess and it’s so pretty! I love the thick leaves. I’ve seen some people grow them tall and climbing, I hope I’m able to too 😅
I don't get this either and I would never spend that much money for a plant. It's just leaves and roots like any other plant. I have the regular black cardinal and it is a very beautiful and hardy plant. I've had it about 2 years and it's doing well with its dark green leaves. I did finally get a baby pink princess and it is starting to grow. I don't know what it will do but I'm waiting to see😊
Pink princess is an old cultivar, from like the 1960s-70s. I think they were fairly much forgotten about then the pandemic rolled around it was "rare". the ones passed around during the pandemic had hot garbage for genetics, people were just slicing and dicing whatever they got their greedy little hands on and putting them on Etsy, a lot of them were immature cuttings, when you cut up juvenile philodendrons you get plants that will never mature, they grow kind of twisted and never produce cataphylls.
I agree with you a million times over. I started the plant journey in 2020........I spent a lot of money on these trending plants that died. I never bought them again. Lesson learned. I now am more aware of what kind of plant I would like to have in my collection. Like, I have a Monstera collection. A Pothos collection. An Anthurium collection. Also, a variety of Philodendron. And Spider plants. The hype to me is disgusting on some plants. I agree with you!!! I SAY, It's about your plant collection , NOT THE HYPE!! Thank you, sweetie. I love this video.
I am SO with you on this one. Clean clear variegatations can be stunning but those muddy messes that look like they are diseased or at the very least tragically nutrient-deficient are a big NO for me. I want plants that, when I look at them, inspire happiness and a sense of peace. I do NOT want to be thinking "gee, I know this is how she is SUPPOSED to look but holy crap she looks like holy crap" and have me feeling more than a bit of buyer's remorse. And even worse, feeling like I have to sort of pretend to be happy with her and obligated to keep her because I spent money on her. As far as the "pinks" are concerned, I love the pink/red aglaonemas. Many of them achieve what I think is a wonderful balance between the greens/whites/pink/reds and look absolutely beautiful. Thanks for a GREAT video!!
The black cardinal variegated gives me cardboard autum vibes hahaha. I totally agree with your list! I dont need the confusion of "are you sick or not?" I also dont need to pay extra for that stress. Im a bit of a plant tight ass (currently not working) so i usually buy $5 small plants BUT i do look up the mature version before i buy it. Also also! I was typing this as you showed the beaten up syngonium and if i was drinking coffee, i would have spat it out hahahahaha Also also also! Your hair is soooo beautiful 🤩
🇦🇺 hey Drea 🙋🏻. Apart from two I completely agree with all of them. I love my pink Princess and I have to say, I like that syngonium pink ice but love your description of it 😅 Melanocrisis Ha ha ha that leaf looks like someone took sandpaper to it. The v. Mican's actually reminds me of halomena variegated, the one that has peach, white and green colours - I love that plant.
If i were at a smoothie shop, i would in fact not buy a drink called a "pink strawberry iced mint smoothie swirl". 😂 so i dont make similar decisions for plants. Im not big on pink anyway. A lot of these youve shown do look sickly.
I assume you live in Hawaii? But.. no tan? lol Hawaiis our favourite place to visit To be fair you never know what kind of variegation will come out on each plant, great list! I’m with you on the sickly looking ones, I appreciate the pure green version of plants or with great variegation. I don’t need anymore sick looking ones in my collection 😂they can do that on their own!
Hey Drea 👋 I entered the social media plant world not long ago and honestly it’s so annoying to me lol I can’t stand people “shaking” their plants at the camera and just all the plant hype. People with their moss poles, nope. One leafed plant hype, nope. Purple lights, nope. Naming plants Fred and what not, nope. I don’t get so much of it and that’s ok… I’ll do me lol I agree so many look unhealthy. I can find unhealthy plants at Walmart for cheaper. 😂 ☠️ maybe it’s like the heroin chic era of plants 🤣 😂 The only “pink” plant I’m still obsessed with is the stromanthe 🩷
Agree with all what you've said and I know some of these people. It all gets started by being the first u-tuber with a hyped up plant and then all of them will hype it up too. It served them right when the craze on the ppp went from you just gotta get one for hundreds of dollars to what a financial letdown to buy them for $20 at Lowe's now. I just laugh at so many plantubers trying to hype because they want you to succumb and buy all these plants. No, thanks! I'd rather go out and get a few bags of groceries so I can eat well and stay healthy. How about all the ones that say they are on a no-buy plant ban and the very first store they shop at........they find the most perfect plant and had to have it. It's comedy at its best. I also like the stromanthe except my furniture is in the peachy tones and the pink would not look good. But I always liked that plant :))
I'll add to your rant by saying P. Black Cardinal is a gorgeous plant! I've had mine for about 7 years now and it's one of my favourites. Yes, it's a slow grower but it will withstand a ton of abuse and still keep going. This variegated version is a travesty! 🤮
I think lots of these look terrible but I also find that people have put too much faith in growing in sphagnum or chunk soil/peat free medium with liquid nutrients added. They don’t know what they are doing and either don’t give enough nutrients or cause nutrient lock out. Makes a lot of plants look worse and questionable. Lots of these variegated or non variegated plants thrive in a constant source of nutrient rich soil containing some peat, worm castings and perlite. Add more light and silic acid (optional) for variegated plants if they’re prone to reverting. Specifically Monsteras and most philodendrons will grow healthier and bigger, faster, stronger. Keep it simple and keep your variegation. Great video! those plants are gross though except pink princess mines awesome 😂.
Info on silicon if people have tc issues more reason to use silic acid: silicon protects against pathogens that cause foliar diseases, such as blasts, blight, powdery mildews, leaf spots, ruts, Botrytis and stem rots and root diseases, including Pythium and Phytophthora. And it guards against pests such as stem borers, hoppers, leaf miners, aphids, thrips, spiders, and mites.
I do not understand all the hype on variegated plants, especially the PPP. The shade of pink it produces is nice, but paired with that dark, dirty green, the colors totally clash.
Agreed 100%, the white monster looks sick and has pests. Plants like the Melano and Alocasia's just shouldn't be variegated. Leaves that have natural interest in veining and fenestrations are gorgeous that way they are, then add weird variegation and I think it's just way, way too much!! Yeah, I don't like the muddy look, in fact I don't like the camo look either. "A plant that got beat up and is bleeding out" - LOL!!!
The Sagonium Strawberry Ice should be called, thw Sagonium Usedous Maxy ! I also do not understand the hype of these plants. I honestly dont understand the people either.
I totally disagree with you on the milk confetti syngonium. I have been looking for on ever since I first saw a pic of it. I finally found one at a reasonable price. It is one of my favorite plants. I do agree with the other plants and will never buy them.
what nice colors on you. you are like some super cute little plant ,, and pepto. you prob not old enough to remember the mel brooks movie where he plays a bum named pepto
@@AlohaPlantLife its been so long i cant remember. lol. ill have to rewatch before i can recommend .im sure its better than the movies now. have a pleasant day.
I like the variegated black cardinal, but it looks like it was made from a brown paper bag 😂 and the confetti syngonium , umm it it’s a no, nothing special about it. Allegedly 😅
Thanks for the video. These plants don't look attractive at all. Although I did get a Pink Princess but not at its peak price and not as variegated. It's causing a lot of trouble for me compare to other plants. I just let it be as is and grow what it likes.
Well, I don't understand what the hype about variegation in general is. To me, these always looked like something is not quite right, irregularly shaped and colored. I have not ever chased variegated plants. They are almost always twice or more as expensive as their natural all green non-variegated counterparts. And as I understand it, variegation comes with it's issues... slower growth, all colorless parts (white) parts tend to die off, reversion, etc... I think a lot of this is also personal preference. They won't appeal to everyone, but there is always going to be someone to whom these will appeal. I agree with your assessment on most of these plants, however.
I'm not a fan of that yellow pothos.. It looks like a bunch of yellow dead leaves. I would feel like I have to pick the dead leaves off. And the variegated prayer plant, from a distance looks sickly.
I don't understand the hype of all the huge plants? Sorry even the Montsera? It's huge and my opinion only It doesn't look nice. I like house plants that don't take up so much room. But that's me. So many people love them.
For me it’s a space issue. I live in an apartment with not many windows and I just can’t accommodate a big plant like this without dedicating a large chunk of a room for it and some decent grow lights. I’d love to be able to have a nice big monstera or a bird of paradise though, but it’s like trying to fit a big dining table in our living area 😅
Totally understand that! My monstera will eventually be relocated into my bedroom which is a very large room with ceilings that are like 15-20 feet high, but if I didn’t have a large space like that I don’t know what the heck I would do with it as it gets bigger
Making money off variegated versions of plants is out of control. So many look terrible when variegated. Well, I say, “Go ahead!” The plants I like will be even more affordable! Loving my green.
Thanks, Drew, for saying what needs to be said.
Sorry for the typo, DREA!

I have the Milk Confetti....or one similar to that. And I got it because of the silvery minty color, not the pink 😁
That Pink Mint looks a little like how Barbados Gooseberry looks when they are new leaves. But agree, none of these look like "Hello, Beautiful! $$$".
Love your rants! Eager to see your choices for this list and if I agree! 😊
I couldn't agree with you more, Drea.....it's ridiculous out there in the planty world. I’m so close to throwing out my pink Princess,it stresses me out so much.
I felt stressed too especially because I just hate the pole and vine look on these! I cut it down and made a bushy pink princess out of it.
I know eh? They definitely do stress me out too!
And I wish mine would have grown bushy! It just got leggy! They were getting enough sun and water. I.just don't know.
Hmmm. I'm on the lookout for that Marble one!

Perfect. No notes. Thanks for sharing your concerns, as very very valid.

Oohhh...I was with you until the black cardinal. I love those muted colors. 😂 and now we're just downhill. Strawberry ice has gorgeous variegation! It comes in cream and fades to pink. Blood is not pink. Lol.
The pink mint looks like someone cut off the worst leaves of a pink princess and stuck them in some moss.
Absolutely agree!

I had no idea how many colors could be called pink! But seriously, seeing this after recently rewatching your leaf problems video is a trip
I’ve found my plant peeps! A friend added me to a online group where folks are spending $400+ on variegated plants that look diseased to me 😅
"It looks like a plant that got beat up." 😂
I would add the philodendron painted lady to this list for the same reasons as all of these.
Totally agree, if any of my plants looked like these, I would be concerned 😂.
Fully agree. And you forgot two more monstrosities - Pothos Shangrila, which also doesn't unfurle, and the Mostera Monkey Mint, which has the awful combination of sick color and fenestrated leaves, and looks twice as sick as the others.
I have pink princess black cherry and p.p. marble and they are about 8 inches so far. I think they are pretty but we’ll see how they do long term!
It would be boring if everyone’s plant collections looked the same 🤷🏻♀️
I thought about putting the Carmel marble on the list but when they have high variegation they can actually be quite stunning so I decided not to pick on it this time💚
I so agree. I don’t understand how anyone can find any of those plants attractive. Especially the variegated black cardinal.
I LOVED THIS!!! 😂
Honestly, I totally agree with you on everything.
Agree 200%
I agree with you a million times over. I started the plant journey in 2020........I spent a lot of money on these trending plants that died. I never bought them again. Lesson learned. I now am more aware of what kind of plant I would like to have in my collection. Like, I have a Monstera collection. A Pothos collection. An Anthurium collection. Also, a variety of Philodendron. And Spider plants. The hype to me is disgusting on some plants. I agree with you!!! I SAY, It's about your plant collection , NOT THE HYPE!! Thank you, sweetie. I love this video.
🫶
Aglaonema coloration are definitely 1000x better💚
Totally agree with all of these! Love the beautiful monstera in the background. ❤
I would love to hear your thoughts on monstera Thai constellation!
Also also! I was typing this as you showed the beaten up syngonium and if i was drinking coffee, i would have spat it out hahahahaha
Also also also! Your hair is soooo beautiful 🤩
😂 “it looks like a plant that got beat up”
I hate muddy colored plants also. Agree with your choices.
This video is hilarious! I enjoyed watching it so much!
Hello can u make a video in which hoya like to climb or trail like u did w the philodendrons plzzz
🇦🇺 hey Drea 🙋🏻. Apart from two I completely agree with all of them. I love my pink Princess and I have to say, I like that syngonium pink ice but love your description of it 😅
Melanocrisis Ha ha ha that leaf looks like someone took sandpaper to it. The v. Mican's actually reminds me of halomena variegated, the one that has peach, white and green colours - I love that plant.
Ilo e rant videos. It feels so good to rant once in a while
Drea, thank you for your honest opinion.
Like and subscription.
👏👏👏 I love it! Thank you for sharing this❤️
You are so welcome!💚
I saw the milk confetti syngonium at Lowe's a few days ago
**in northern california
If i were at a smoothie shop, i would in fact not buy a drink called a "pink strawberry iced mint smoothie swirl". 😂 so i dont make similar decisions for plants. Im not big on pink anyway. A lot of these youve shown do look sickly.
I assume you live in Hawaii? But.. no tan? lol Hawaiis our favourite place to visit
To be fair you never know what kind of variegation will come out on each plant, great list!
@@jackiewhitney5031 😂 exactly!
😂😂 The one looks like a CAMO plant, like all the multitudes of clothing sold as ‘CAMO, the one you called Black Cardinal.
I'll add to your rant by saying P. Black Cardinal is a gorgeous plant! I've had mine for about 7 years now and it's one of my favourites. Yes, it's a slow grower but it will withstand a ton of abuse and still keep going. This variegated version is a travesty! 🤮
Agreed!
I LOVE 😍 your Planty Ranty videos!
Yay! Thank you!💚
A lot of those plants I too don’t get it. I do not like muddy colours on plants ☹️🇨🇦
A lot of those do look sick. I don’t understand the hype for the Maranta silver band, it looks sick to me.
Some of the colorings make me think about orchid flowers that has been dyed. Ugh!
The anxiety in me would become compounded exponentially by all of these. They all look sickly. 😮
Right?! And if they actually did get sick how would you even know lol
I have come to hate the growth pattern of the pink, white philodendrons. No matter what I have tried they always grow in ugly.
The Sagonium Strawberry Ice should be called, thw
Sagonium Usedous Maxy !
My white princess is stressing me out. She may have to go 🙄. I’m also anti pink princess. I don’t get it either.
The pink mint is a plant i can imagine Wednesday Addams growing.
🤣💯
what nice colors on you. you are like some super cute little plant ,, and pepto. you prob not old enough to remember the mel brooks movie where he plays a bum named pepto
Old enough to know the reference but never seen the movie. Is it good?
@@AlohaPlantLife its been so long i cant remember. lol. ill have to rewatch before i can recommend .im sure its better than the movies now. have a pleasant day.
I like the variegated black cardinal, but it looks like it was made from a brown paper bag 😂 and the confetti syngonium , umm it it’s a no, nothing special about it. Allegedly 😅
That’s another great analogy for that plant!
Aspirated pepto bismo 😂😂😂
Please give all three cats a big 🤗 and 💋 for me😊
I'm not a fan of that yellow pothos.. It looks like a bunch of yellow dead leaves. I would feel like I have to pick the dead leaves off. And the variegated prayer plant, from a distance looks sickly.
Agreed!
@@AlohaPlantLife donate it to a botanical garden or something? 😄
Green spot looks like crude
26:45 that last plant is definitely the ugliest one lol (the pink one on the list)
Some of these plants look chlorotic to me
tulips. mood rings. pet rocks. cabbage patch dolls. fads of the zombie hordes, some of which do plants. the end.
🤣🤣🤣
That pink thing looks dead
I do not like either not enought pretty pink
