He sold the car a few years ago now and made a killing on selling it. I think he bought it for $65k AUD and sold for something like $120k. It had a 3.2 or 3.4 engine with mechanical injection. The injection got dumped for carbys as they are easier to tune and hold their tune. I saw the car for sale about 2 years ago and that guy wanted $150kAUD for it.

Was at my local specialist a week ago for a service. I talked to the mechanic and said how the 997 is looking better and better as it ages. He told me to stick with my Cayman 987S as they are seeing a few 997's coming in with bore scoring, but not a single Cayman with this issue. Interesting bit of insider knowledge...

Not true, the 987s, especially the .1’s also have bore scoring. Look at Joe Talks Cars channel, his cayman s had severe bore scoring and he had the engine rebuilt and resleeved the cylinders.

    • @plus790

Another great and informative video. I had this dilemma a year ago now. I liked the looks of both cars but the 911 had that long Porsche heritage - it is nearly everyone's idea of what a Porsche is. But in the end I bought a beautiful white Cayman. And the reason for the choice was very simple. A sports car, in my mind has two seats. Add that to the mid-engine handling and the decision was made. No regrets.

99% of the general public think the Cayman is a 911 anyways. I think its even prettier myself with a tucked in and chiseled rear end. I certainly would not car what other 911 owners thought and getting caught up in that rat race of model snobbery.

I've spent £100's on my 2010 987.2 in last couple years (minor faults and shifter cable replacement as a pro-active measure not breakdown luckily). but she's my daily drive and has over 70k on her now..
Shes currently in for service and new injectors (had on/ off misfire for last few months) so I'm expecting a hefty bill.. but like you say don't buy one if youre not expecting to pay for the enjoyment.. hopfully this last hiccup is my last one for a while..🤞🤞

There is no doubt that if Porsche would apportion the Cayman as they do the 911, the Cayman would easily outsell the 911. It INHERENTLY handles better....sorry but the mileage is better...and it looks better. There isn't a bad angle on the car...a work of art. It doesn't need 4 wheel steering...it doesn't need all the handling "electronics" which is to keep the back end in check like the 911. After driving both cars I actually had to make the choice you're referring to. My choice of my Cayman S was a no-brainer. It never ever failed to put a smile on my face...a true driver's car.

Not even a small bulb. Amazing. I mentioned this to you before but IMS bearing problems are almost a non issue with any Cayman from `06 onwards. Can be an issue on the older model 997 design however. Bore scoring definitely something to look out for , and gear shifter cables are best swapped out on older cars as a preventative measure.. I previously owned a 997 Carrera like yours, but prefer the simpler, purer Cayman manual experience. I have a full Capristo exhaust on mine and it sounds awesome.

3 years ago, I had a '007 911-C4S and a '006-Cayman-S. Of course, the 007-911 C4S had more power, and the '06 Cayman S handled a bit better (being mid-engined), but the 911's driving position was simply better. I drove the 911 on odd days, and the Cayman on even days ... but couldn't detect much difference beyond the obvious.
But one fine day I drove both cars "back-to-back" and continued to change back and forth a couple times, and I came up with this conclusion:
The 911 drives like a solid tank made of steel ... whereas the Cayman drives like a solid tank made out of thinner-gauge steel ... just slightly thinner. Barely noticeable. And the Cayman felt lighter, and more capable of being thrown into a curve, or back and forth from one lane on the highway to another. I'm sure others have reported similarly.
Now I have a 2019 Tesla Performance Model S, and a 2013 911 C4S (with a ducktail) The 2013 911 C4S is raw in performance, yet refined in handling. The Tesla is even faster (i.e., 0-to-60 mph in 3.2 seconds), but fails to inspire trust-in-the-corners like the 911 does. The Tesla's handling is much like a BMW M3 (as I've driven my son's M3), but (again) doesn't inspire as much confidence in the corners as an M3 ... but that lack of trust could be due to my non-familiarity with this sedan having a better weight-distribution, and lower center of gravity.
I'm still gettin familiar with the 2019 Tesla and the 2013 911. BTW, all my sports cars have always been close-ratio manuals, except the 5-speed 1990 C4 and the Tesla Performance Model 3, but at least the Tesla's practical. I don't love the 7-spd ... but when I start vacation on the highway, I think I will.

@@mudjashorts1766 Sorry for my tardy reply: I've not looked at prices in quite a while, but the price seems OK to me, if its closer to $60,000 american dollars. I like this car because it's a 3.4 or 3.5 liter engine, with 2-wheel drive, not 4-wheel drive ... a more basic car, no, I mean more traditional 911. The only significant thing I dont' like is the dopple-clutch automatic transmission, because I'm just one of those die-hard gear heads ... if you gonna have a sports-car, then go all the way. ... but that's me, and my opinion. I dd NOT notice the SportDesign features, and could not read the foreign language on the link you sent me, so my review is probably not very valuable or reliable to you.

718 GTS turbo 2.5L here. It has 365hp, sub 4 0-60, and gets 25mpg daily driving and 35mpg highway. If you remove the badges, most people would pick a Cayman S over a base 911. That could be a really fun video!

Tough choices guys. I drive a 2.5l Boxster gts pdk and a cayman 987.1 manual. Never wanted the rear engine 911. All great cars but the midship is where it’s at for me. If I had to pick I’d go with the convertible those California days are great. Obviously I struggled picking so I hedged with both and leave the truck outside. No regrets only open roads

I have a 2007 Boxster S with tip. Was a bit of an impulse buy and up to this point all I had owned was vintage 911s and 356s. After 2 months of ownership I am have no regrets and am completely happy with having an automatic. I’m 48 and don’t need to heel-toe every corner at this point in my life. Plus, I’m having the dealer put in a later PDK wheel with paddles so I’ll be very happy in about a week.
Tip cars seem to have a discount vs manual. Works for me
All that being said, I think my next 911 will be a manual. Needed to get the rear out on the corners. Not sure getting the rear out with a Boxster or Cayman is advisable.

Thanks for the info on some maintenance costs.
This is very, very useful for prospective owners to realise what costs can arise.
Not enough people show this & concentrate on new cars but I’d imagine in reality there are far more people who are going to spend £20k-£30k on a used car than £80k-£120k on a new one.
Whilst it’s entertaining to ‘window shop’ expensive new cars, it’s very interesting and relevant to get real life views, comparisons and running costs on the cars that we really can buy.
That doesn’t mean boring cars of course! 😉

There's this thing that happens with the 997, it happened with my 2007 C2S don't know if it happens with other cars or maybe newer models. The keyhole in the ignition gets blocked off and you can't put your key into it to start the car, I've read about some people falling into the wrong hands over this and having to replace the ignition lock unit.
Found out from the forums, it worked for me so if this ever happens to you just get an old Toyota key, the old style of keys for some reason will enter that hole and release the thing that blocks off that hole, stick your key back in and start your car.
