- In this weeks Edinburg/Scotland Vlog we take a wander round the incredible Craigmillar Castle just outside of Edinburgh. We get to explore this incredible 16th century ruin castle. It has also been used for filming in the hit tv programme OUTLANDER.

The first thing you’ll notice about the castle is the two yew trees that line the entrance. These trees are believed to be hundreds of years old and are believed to have been planted in Queen Mary’s honour when she stayed at the castle. The wood from yew trees are often used to craft bows for archery, and they symbolise longevity and rebirth.

I walked pass the castle one night after midnight going home to Bingham when i was 21 , and it really was bloddy creepy so i got up speed and run like hell , that was in 1961 , 8 months after being demobbed from the Army , some hero i was LOL.
I don't know if it was the same in Scotland, but in England they imposed a window tax, lots of people bricked up windows to get around posting the tax; at this point the government introduced a candle tax!
Same in Scotland ,not sure about the candle tax.
We did have the window tax in Edinburgh, but this is not it. There were doors which were blocked up the same way, so not the window tax.
Prior to the revolution England imposed a window tax on the colonies as well. Of course, at that time it was to help finance England after their war with France.
Very cool! The arms carved into the wall which you pointed out (three unicorns) is the arms of Preston. Simon de Preston was Sheriff of Midlothian in the 1300s and that line built and owned the castle early on. Thank you for another cool video!

My grandparents and mother lived on Craigmillar St in Glasgow which led me to discover the reference which is this castle. It also was mentioned in recent (Feb 2022) HistoryScotland magazine lecture. Your visit was the invitation I needed to plan on strolling through its rooms when visiting in Sept. 2022. Thank you for such a fun visit to a wonderfully preserved castle.
This kind of reminds me of a medieval version of the Winchester house in California. Staircases leading to nowhere, doors opening up to a wall. The owner Sarah Winchester, thought she was being haunted and was told she would have to continue construction on her house or she would die.
What I love about this castle is, it's not huge. 5 of us adults and 3 little kids were the only ones there. The kids could run around & play hide and seek, without getting lost!! They had fun!! Small as this castle is, I learned a Lot about castles that day!!
We had to leave at a certain time that day, bcz they had to set up tables and chairs for a wedding reception the next day !! 💙💙💙
The windows are like that, so that they cld shoot out arrows, & so that enemy's arrows wld have less chance of getting their arrows into the castle!!
And those uneven, stoney spiral staircases were made that way for a purpose!! Whoever lived in the castle, knew the uneven pattern of the steps, whether they were going upstairs or downstairs. Plus, they curved in a certain direction, so that if an intruder got in, the guy upstairs, coming downstairs, got to be near the wall, & the intruder going upstairs was on the outside of the stairs, & they'd both have a sword & shield !! So the protecter of the castle, knew the pattern of the steps, & had the advantage of the curve of the steps, & the wall-side of the steps!! You've got a sword in one hand, a shield in the other...the intruder's on the outside of the steps....
The steps to the roof, are narrower than the everyday, indoor steps. smoother, but narrower.
That video brought back some very happy memories for me as it was where I was married in 2008. My bride and all the lady guests wore period costumes and the men wore highland outfits. It was rather windy up on the top ramparts and not really ideal for guys wearing kilts!. The ceremony was held in the great hall which didn't properly feature in the video but, I think, was where the characters in costume were having their conversation. Thanks again for this and all your other videos of Edinburgh and surrounding area.

Hi Tony and ya we bonny lass, I'm not a history buff but I remember about the window tax when buildings were taxed on the amount of windows they had, people bricked windows up to avoid paying the extra tax, you will see it on many historical buildings,churches ect! Fun to watch the two of two exploring and having a good time. I'm also intrigued by the blocked off windows and wonder if that was done during a time of threat to make the castle more defensible.

The letters in the stone at the front door, was most likely the Master Stone Mason's Mark, identifying the man who was responsible for making certain that the building project was done well and on time. Sometimes the Marks are the letters of the Master Mason's Mark or the letters of his name. Thank you for doing this video, this castle is on my wish list for our visit in July, 2019. The various views that you recorded was so nice and exciting.

Wow, it's so big inside. I walk past this castle quite a lot and I've never been in. I'm saving if for something to do when I have guests staying. Its a shame you didn't have a clearer day. The view from just standing the park is fantastic.
Lovely tour, thanks. I must check that out next time I visit Edinburgh... as for those slim wee windows... they are called "loopholes". They were made to let light and air in, whilst also serving as easy way to protect/defend castle. The expression "finding the loophole" lead to people looking for the way a castle was protected... Also, in horrid weather, they were easy to close up...

Wikipedia said Craigmillar Castle belonged to the Preston family who begun building 14 c continuing to build 15 and 16 c , they where judges and magistrates . In 1660 the castle was sold to Sir John Gilmore lord president of the court of sessions . note (exploring castles online ) indicated you can get there by bus #14 to the hospital then just walk up a hill . This castle custodians are now Historic Scotland .
Another famous Castle built around a tree is Inveraray in Argyll Clan Campbell . Thank you for this wonderful video .
The number 14 bus does not go to the hospital. you get it to Craigmillar crossroads and walk up to the castle. The number 30 bus to Musselburgh from princess street as well.

Love seeing the two of you together! What a wonderful "find"! I have seen no mention of it in the countless travel books I've read, but now - I gotta go! It looks worthy of exploration. It reminded me a lot of Beaumaris castle in Wales.
@broonfords my DH believes the windows are so small to make it difficult for arrows to be shot inside the castle. Although. I’m not sure where the castle archers would be when they shot their arrows. I can’t imagine they would shimmy inside that wee space! Thank you for another great video!

Large wall thickness for defence sever 100 years ago, wars. While churches and some royal castles had glass windows early in the medieval period, most castles did not have them before the 1300s.

5:58 That enclosure your standing in is an archers slit, an archer would defend the castle by firing arrows at an approaching threat.

The Castillo de San Marcos in St Augustine,Florida has those tall thin windows. It's where the archers shoot from.

Fantastic video! That was on my list and we never made it. Besides the missing floors and roof, it’s really in good shape! The solid stone walls are really impressive. Looks like you were able to spend a decent amount of time there also.
Bran 😅 That’s funny because as soon as Kirsten stepped into that fireplace I was thinking the same thing, it looks like the fireplace that’s at the Leaky Cauldron in Orlando.
It was also used in Outlaw King. I remember that gorgeous inner courtyard with the lovely tree. Beautiful spot. And yes, all the lovely doors!

Stunning...I love castles...but sadly my fear of heights stops me from exploring them...visited Edinburgh in January and couldn't go in the castle as its so high up...its like it's on top of the world....wish I didn't have this fear 😪😪😪
This castle is very open, yet very small; especially compared to the Edinburgh Castle. I'm quite fearful of heights, too, but This castle was great to see !! And I felt safe through the whole visit. They give you a guide map to explain each room, but you explore the castle yourself. & It's too small to get lost in!! And there's no big windows !!! 💙
I'm pretty sure that if you're reasonably able-bodied you can get a bus to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and walk from there. Can't remember numbers off the top of my head, but 33 maybe?

A friend had just recommended a visit to Craigmillar Castle, so this was very timely! I enjoyed the pop culture references (GOT, HP, and even a bit of Roald Dahl for good measure).
There is a bus to go to the castle, I've been there last year and took the bus from Edimburgh. Unfortunately it was late and the castle was close when I arrive, so I hope to be in time this year. Thank you for the video.

This is a castle! And it looks like as good as any where to off a husband,lol.
Those little biddy windows are arrow slots. A soldier could shoot arrows at the enemy through them and be pretty well protected from the enemies arrows. I have a mystery for you, if you ever go to the Tower of London to explore. Maybe you can find out why there are two small windows bricked up on the upper level. I have been trying to find out for years and no one will answer me. Maybe you can find out.

Brill video of Craigmillar Castle, Guys. Like you, Tony, I would like to know why the windows and doors were sealed off, unless done so some time during all the revisions. What I would really like to know is why couldnae the Scottish Trust not fully restore all the castle by putting in flooring, replace the glass windows, etc. to be more complete like Edinburgh Castle? After some research and an ancestry DNA test, I found my descendants were the last to formally inhabit this grand castle. It was an amazing trip through a huge piece of my families history... that was unknown until I discovered it! Makes sense that I would be named James, after my grandfather, who was named after his father and so on until you come to the last owner of this very castle... named James of course. In some way, my name was probably passed down to me from him though he was forgotten. I am a USA native and was always told I was German. Come to find out, I'm mostly Scottish and Irish with some (14%) German on one side. Sorry for the rant. I'm just pumped up on the tour I just took with you all! I'm subscribed for future vids for sure! I'd love to make it over there some time, plan to.

I just found out this is my family’s Ancestral castle as I found out I am Related to the clan directly to clan/house Preston (I am a grandson of a Preston daughter who married so I have name Richards but still can use the tartan of the clan haha) who Owned the castle and spent the last couple of Hours looking about it and now found this video

They have done a lot of work on it. I used to go there in the 90’s and you couldn’t have gotten onto the roof or the other floors. I am sure it had a dungeon though?
