It's scored, as usual, with Sibelius 7.5
The piano part was created in Presonus Studio One v4.5 using Modartt’s Pianoteq 6 Steingraeber Grand piano and processed thru Valhalla’s Vintage Verb.
Peter’s vocals come from the centre channel of the 5.1 DVD mixes except…
The gentle “space and time” section (bars 29-34 in the PDF); Peter’s vocal for this bit doesn’t exist on the centre channel.
It’s on the main stereo channels, mixed in with all the instrumentation, so is impossible to isolate!
I had to make a decision. I tried it with only my piano playing but it just sounded too bare.
So… what you can hear during this section of the video is the dulcet tones of … Elektrik Hob!

I hope none of you are scandalised by the fact that I’ve sung this bit. I had no other choice I’m afraid.
As I sing backing vocals with every band I’ve ever been in, I know I can carry a tune reasonably well (no pitch correction used), but my voice is definitely NOT ‘lead singer’ material; far too ‘choral’ 😉
But, as it’s a gentle section, I figured it would be Ok. Hopefully my warblings don’t spoil your enjoyment of the video too much… lol!
On to the piano part.
It’s pretty much based on Tony’s playing on the studio version (there are no live versions as far as I’m aware), especially the right hand, but the left hand Verse & Chorus have some of Mike’s bass line and a few notes that Steve played on guitar thrown in for good measure.
Of course, as per usual, use the sustain pedal to taste.
Intro.
Easy enough to work out, not quite so straightforward to score…
The first bar is based around Ab minor to Ab major; the 2nd bar is E modulating to A and on through bar 3 and finally, in bar 4, a modulation to Ab for the song proper. Because of the changes from ‘flat’ to ‘sharp’ keys and back again, I decided not to have a key signature which of course means there are loads of flats and sharps all over the place, but it did really seem the easiest way to do it! Of course, don’t forget that any sharps or flats ARE still played for the remainder of any bar that they appear in…
Verse.
The only things worth pointing out here are:
The ‘pushed’ semiquaver main bass notes in the LH at the end of bars 5-7; the 1st half of the 1st verse is the only time Tony plays them. All the other times, he plays what’s written in bars 13-16 i.e. the main bass note is played on 'the one’ (or downbeat if you prefer). Of course, feel free to play whichever one you like whenever you like 👍
The arpeggiated high crotchet chord in the RH at the start of bar 5 is played at the beginning of the 2nd verse only. The lower quaver chord & singlet pair are for the 1st verse.
Chorus.
Bars 29 onwards are played slightly slower and you can omit the top note of the last 3 chords in bar 34 and likewise for the 1st chord in bar 35 if you want; they're not on the original but I like them. Apart from that WYSIWYG :)
Instrumental.
The melody is easy enough; just play what’s written. Incidentally, the original IS a piano, but with the strings plucked by a plectrum.
The accompaniment; this really doesn’t have to be as precise as it’s written.
Firstly, it’s actually a version of what Tony played with his right hand (the melody would’ve been recorded separately) while his left hand played some bass notes here and there.
So, if you’re feeling adventurous and/or a bit flash, you could actually play the accompaniment with your RH and play the melody with your LH by crossing it over your RH! 😎
If you play it as written (no hand inverting) using the LH for the accompaniment, then playing the 2nd of each pair of quavers (8th notes) on its own while playing 3 (or 4) notes for the 1st quaver requires some quite precise finger control.
Well, for me it does as my LH is nowhere near as ‘fast’ as my RH and I suspect some (most?) of you will have a similar experience…
So, don’t worry about playing the LH exactly as it’s scored. If some of the ‘lone’ quavers end up with some of the notes from the ‘chord’ quavers as well, or the odd note gets missed out of some of the 'chord' quavers, it really doesn’t matter in the slightest. It’ll still sound cool 😎
Outro.
This, of course, is only played the 2nd time through. On the original it just gradually fades out to nothing but although I do fade it a bit on the video, I’ve scored an ending so fading the Outro is optional.

Several hundred people have used the BMaC method; it really is very straightforward, that's why I use it.
But of course you can just write it down yourself if you so wish.

Oh wow, before I read the description I thought your voice was Tony's doing a backing vocal I never knew existed.
😂😉 Funnily enough, there may even be a recording somewhere with Tony singing as this was a song he brought fully formed to the band (as in, he wrote the lyrics and music) so he must have demonstrated it to the rest of the guys, presumably with him singing the vocal 😮 If only someone had recorded it! 😳
@@ElektrikHob I remember him talking about singing melodies for the band in some of the bio books like "Chapter & Verse" and there's the video where he goes over "Home by the Sea" with Phil.

Beautiful, EH. I always enjoy the fact that you hear chord inversions better than I do. Notation-wise (again!!) I do believe it is permissible in, say, bar 12, for the first tied quavers to be one crotchet, so - quaver+crotchet+2 tied quavers+crotchet+quaver. The tied crotchets beamed in a four group look a bit strange to me. But then, I'm always quibbling!
Indeed you are...! 😂 But yes, I did originally write it the way you suggested, but changed it because, ironically, I thought you might comment on it needing to be all tied quavers... 😆
I've updated the PDF with crotchets in the middle of beats 1-2 and/or 3-4 (but not, of course 2-3) for every occurence 👍

One of my all time favorite songs. Not very good at piano but I've been trying to learn this for 50 years. You did a phenomenal job. Which A in bar 39 (1st or 2nd one in the right hand or the top notes of the left hand chords) ? In all cases they are indeed (and are written as) A naturals.
