    The first Genesis album I ever listened to was A Trick of the Tail.
    Way back in 1977 when I was 14, I’d already gotten into Yes, ELP, Zep, Floyd, Crimson & Purple but was completely unaware of Genesis until a mate at school suggested I might like them and advised me to get Trick and Selling England by the Pound to start my journey. Trick went on the turntable first (cos I liked the gatefold album cover) and that was it - my lifelong love of Genesis began! The opening track (Volcano) simply blew me away! The sheer power of the song and then that fantastically tricksy instrumental bit at the end!
    And then I heard Entangled…
    I’d never heard guitars played like this before 😮 It was only later that I found out they were 12-strings (2 or 3 of them together!) which I knew nothing about.
    It just melted my heart and then… the instrumental ending!!
    Again, at that time I had no idea about ARP synths, Mellotrons or Moog Taurus Bass Pedals.
    But the sound was glorious, no other word for it!!
    To be honest, I was fortunate that I had a vinyl pressing of Trick that a HiFi shop later told me (when I went through my ‘quality HiFi phase’ a few years later; I used Trick and Rush’s Moving Pictures as my reference discs) was the best they’d ever heard.
    But the immense joy I felt on listening to that whole album, and especially Entangled, has remained with me for all the 45 years since.
    Entangled is still one of my favourite 3 or 4 Genesis tracks ever and I’ve finally gotten around to trying to transcribe it! Yes, I had a stab at a rough transcription back in the day but never really got it to sound like the original; until now (hopefully…)
    The problem was trying to make two (sometimes three) 12-string guitars and one acoustic guitar sound right as a solo piano piece. NOT easy, let me tell you!
    I couldn’t just pile the individual guitar lines on top of one another; it was impossible to play and didn’t sound that good anyway. So I had to choose what I felt were the most important notes from the various guitar parts.
    But after a LOT of analysis of all the arpeggiated guitar lines, I think I’ve come up with something I’m prepared to share.
    The original audio parts that I’ve used are, as usual, from the 2007 5.1 DVD mixes.
    As well as all the vocal parts, you’ll also hear other original sounds like the tinkly celeste (or glockenspiel?) and the Mellotron strings fade in/out plus, of course, the above mentioned outro instrumental sounds. But NO guitars (replaced by my piano part).
    How’d I manage that?! By good fortune really, I noticed that not only did the rear (surround) left & right channels have exactly the same guitar parts as the front L & R channels but they also didn’t contain the other instrumentation that the front channels had.
    So I simply phase-inverted the rear channels, adjusted their levels slightly and hey-presto; no guitars! 😀
    I decided to keep the original synth/choir/pedals sounds of the instrumental outro in the video along with my piano simply because they’re just awesome! Of course, I had to swamp the choir (and consequently the synth) in reverb because the 2007 version, unlike ALL previous versions, doesn’t really have any!! I’ve already opined on how I feel about this in several YT comments over the years so I’ll say no more… 😉
    Thanks to everyone who’s ‘bought me a coffee’, I’ve been able to puchase 112dB’s rather wonderfully analog sounding Redline Equaliser which is now my EQ-of-choice for general EQ’ing duties (I still use FabFilter for surgical stuff) and LiquidSonics’ Seventh Heaven which is easily the best reverb plugin I’ve ever heard!! Perfect for those Mellotron choirs! 😊
    It's scored, of course, with Sibelius 7.5
    The piano audio was created in Presonus Studio One v4.5 using Modartt’s Pianoteq 7 Steingraeber Grand piano and processed thru the above-mentioned EQ and Valhalla’s VintageVerb & Delay.
    Loads of performance notes in the PDF!
    That’s it, have fun! 👍

    * * * EDIT (Nov 14th '21): Revised the score layout of the PDF to something I feel is MUCH better! 😊 Apologies if you've already printed it off * * *
    * * * EDIT (Nov 15th '21): Added an alternative version (Entangled Alt). Same notes, but some have been moved from left hand to right hand * * *
    * * * EDIT (Sep 26th '22): Have improved font size and layout for both versions * * *
    Christian from TrueFilm brought up an interesting point about chord naming in his comment below.
    I had thought about naming the choir chords in Outro 2 fully (as I did everywhere else) but the chord in bars 86 & 102 would definitely have been called G/E and not Em7 (as every guitarist I've ever known would have insisted upon 😂). Likewise, bar 100 would have been Bm/G and not G^7.
    But I knew that if I'd done that, then it would have been commented upon 😂 Hence this comment 😉
    It may be a keyboardist thing, but I always look at pop/rock/prog etc. (but NOT jazz) chords as a left hand bass note with a right hand chord on top.
    This is especially true with Genesis because Tony's chord progressions HAVE to be viewed this way 99% of the time and these choir bits are no exception.
    Similarly with Turn It On Again (and many others); that whole piece is RH triads over a LH bass note and when there's a D triad with a B bass it just makes much more sense (to me) to think of it as D/B and not Bm7 because of this.

    I can just imagine what an undertaking this was for you! This is absolutely amazing!! I've always loved this tune & if there was one complete song they at least left on the 76 video this encapsulates Genesis in that moment with an exclamation point!!! Bravo to you Hob for sharing this!!!

      Thanks Brett! You're not wrong about the amount of work that went into this! 😂 It certainly took the longest along with the Cinema Show Solo video though for different reasons. But I'm really pleased with how it's turned out; I think it's probably my favourite now followed by CSS and Rooftops.

    Hello Hob!
    Top accuracy for your transcription as usual !
    In 1976 (I was 18 and listened to Pink Floyd, Yes, Oldfield) I also discovered Genesis hearing this song at the radio. I found it magnificient immediatly.
    As far as I know, the main composer of this song is Steve Hackett collaborating with Tony Banks. What a pity that these two acolytes have not composed together more often. Probably there was not enough space in the same band for two such creators.

    • @ElektrikHob
      @ElektrikHob  2 роки тому +4

      Yeah, from what I've read, Steve wrote the lyrics and the verse and Tony had the chorus kicking around and came up with the instrumental outo. Mike contributed a little bit too, but it's basically Hackett/Banks. But I believe that your last sentence pretty much sums up how things were in '76/'77.
      Everything I've read seems to indicate that Tony and Mike were the main writers after Ant Phillips left in '70. Peter contributed a lot of the lyrics (though less than many people thought) and some of the music, while Steve's writing seemed to start kicking off around '74 ready for his first album, ... Acolyte, in '75,
      But when Peter left, it basically became the Tony & Mike show as far as writing went and Steve appears to have felt his burgeoning talent as a writer was being stifled within the band.
      It's kind of ironic that (IHMO) some of Steve's best contributions to Genesis came during this two year period - this track and Rooftops on W&W; two of my personal favourites. But I guess there were just too many cooks... 🙂

    Beautiful transcription/piano reduction of a gorgeous piece by Genesis - as always! Thanks for including the chord symbols, making the reading of those fat chords much easier, especially with the ever changing key signatures. Just at a very first glance: Meaure 102 is of course an Em7, but of course the right hand plays a G major chord, as indicated. Anyway: fantastic work as always!

      Thanks 👍 You're correct if you're looking at both hands (as is bar 86), though as I mention in the performance notes in the PDF, for the choir chords I've put the chord names that Tony plays on the Mellotron and have used the full chord names everywhere else based on the left hand arpeggios (Outro) or both hands (all the other parts).
      But yeah, looking solely at the video, I can understand why you mentioned it 🙂

    Beautiful job, EH, and a masterful audio track as well. I've been struggling to hear the big choir chords at the end for some time, so thanks for that. I really understand what you mean about chord names, and you've really helped me over these last couple of years tp hear past the continuo - like the A under much of the Cinema Show solo, where Tony still makes that clear distinction between holding a Gmajor chord or an Eminor. Not understanding this has prevented me from correctly hearing some things while playing Genesis, because in those last two examples I'd probably have heard the sense of A11, and then just played a G6 or Em7 chord instead of being simpler. Bravissimo.

    • @sigil5772
      @sigil5772 2 роки тому +2

      @@ElektrikHob Good job here with rhythmic notation, although I'd have probably gone for 6/4. There comes a point, to my ear, where slow starts to make it difficult to sense two dotted notes to the bar (although this isn't ALL that slow) and I'd start to say well, this is just 3 beats to the bar. Classical music (in the strictest sense) often infuriates me, like certain Beethoven slow movements in 6/8, where I'm like well, if that's an eighth note, then it's an eighth of something pretty big; think of a whale's tail 😃

    • @ElektrikHob
      @ElektrikHob  2 роки тому +4

      @@sigil5772 Yeah, this piece is pretty close to being too slow for quavers; any slower and I probably would've gone for 3/4 instead 👍
      At least with 6/8 you can clearly see the '1 and er, 2 and er' that underpins most of the piece by the grouping of the quavers.

      From Mario Giametti's awsome 'Genesis 1975-2021' book: Tony had a piano bit with melody (in 3/4) that became the chorus. Steve had a 3/4 guitar section that became the verse and I believe Steve did most of the lyrics with Mike chipping in as well (not sure what with). The instrumental ending is Tony though I'd imagine the first half of it had Mike or Steve contributing to the guitar chords/arrangement.
