Wayne Carey Tribute

  • Wayne Carey is universally regarded as the greatest AFL player we have seen. Averaging 16.5 disposals, 6.75 marks and 2.7 goals per game, he tormented defenses for the best part of 15 years.
Much more than a centre half-forward, he could play in the back half or in the midfield.
Powerful, agile and sublimely skilled, a once-in-a-generational talent.

I struggle to think of many more complete Australian athletes than Carey. Speed, agility, leap, strength, skill, courage...

Wayne was just a special force of nature in the AFL and as Leigh Matthews put it... He was often the difference in North winning & losing, took an hard-working, blue collar club like North, to 2 Premierships. The influence of such a leader and dominant player for the Kangaroos, is evident with the club not playing off in a grand final since Carey left the club. Geez ' he was awesome

Not a North fan but this guy has always been my favourite player and I loved him at the crows, even if it was only a few years.

Wayne Carey was the alpha dog of the AFL in the 1990s. North Melbourne went from a bottom of nothing side during the late 80s and early 90s to being one of the top sides of the game’s history. 7 consecutive preliminary finals, 3 Grand Finals and two flags. He also became one of the ultimate players of his generation. Kicked 80 goals at CHF twice, had 32 games with 20 plus disposals and five or more goals in the same game. 272 games and he averaged 17 disposals, seven marks and 2.7 goals per game. Best contested mark for a man of his size that I had seen.

I didn't grow up watching Aussie Rules at all. But I'll never forget the first game I ever saw - Nth Melb vs Geelong semi Final. This bloke called Wayne Carey. I didn't know the rules, but I knew clearly, at that moment that I was watching something special. King Carey.

Hi Avi Cobra. I am in the process of a putting together another Ablett Snr video. Am still on the lookout for a few highlights in particular. 1990 Exhibition game vs Port Adelaide as well as a couple of other non-televised games which I am certain are still out there somewhere.
