I was lucky enough to see Gazza play on many occasions. Including 89 prelim and GF. I was there when he kicked 14 against Richmond in 89 and 14 against Essendon in 93. Watched him kick 11 against Melbourne one day and 11 against Nth. I saw the best of Gazza. I can’t speak for everyone but I can say this on my behalf, Gary Ablett Snr is the best footballer I have ever seen . And I’ll take that to the grave.

@TheDamo63 I'll never forget the look Mick Martin's face when Leigh Tudor kicked it over his head and he turned to see Gaz mark it, 5 metres out with seconds to go with scores level in the 94 prelim.
I was at the Essendon game as well. At the Cattery when he kicked his 100th against Sydney and his 1000th against former cat Stephen O'Reilly playing for Freo.
Best two players I have ever seen are called Gary Ablett.

Was seated behind the mark over Pert and remember so vividly how he was standing next to him and seconds later he was on his shoulders!!! Your comment is why I can't deal with the how good would he be in the modern game question. His bumping ability, his defensive prowess for being an attacking player, his ability to kick from just past the square...that isn't the modern game, so seeing his highlights just prove to me how much the game has changed to where he probably would be free kicked into oblivion. He's for when the game was played by men.

From 1992 to 1996, he kicked 516 goals in 102 games, averaging 5.1 goals per game. He kicked 375 of his 1021 goals with Geelong, when he won three consecutive Coleman Medals and kicked 100 plus goals in the same year. (1993; 129, 1994; 122, 1995; 124). Between 1993 and 1995, he averaged close to a half dozen goals per game. Between 1985 and 1990, playing on the half forward flank and wing, he kicked nearly 4 goals per game when he booted 444 goals in 113 games. He even kicked nine goals in a losing grand final side against the mighty Hawks where he made a six game cameo in 1982 with 11 goals.Even when he left in 1996, he kicked 69 goals in 17 matches averaging 4.1 goals per game.

He also requested a trade back to hawks in 86 but they decided no after the contract sat in hawks president office for a year! He really was a hawk! His brother Geoff played whole career at hawthorn as well ! Greatest player without doubt then Matthews! Gary says matthews was best and matthews says ablett was best! That says it all! Hawthorn has had the greatest players greatest coaches of all time! Look at cups since 2015 dogs coached by ex hawk assistant to clarko! The greatest footballer I have ever witnessed in the VFL/AFL league. I'm a Essendon Bomber fan of 50+ yrs and every time Essendon played against Ablett,I secretly wished that Ablett would kick a bag of goals against us but of course we still win. Perfectly example 1983 Ablett v Essendon Our full forward Salmon kicks 10 goals at one end and Ablett kicks a massive 14 goals at the other end ! Bombers win though 😅 Just a pure dynamic power forward with a killer instinct for the goals. Would kick over 100 + goals a year if he was playing today against the pretty boys of the AFL today 😂

The best footballer I've ever seen and I've seen some good one's. Gazza was absolute box office bum's on seats, nobody had his aerial prowess along with his amazing ball handling skills when it hit the ground. Chased the ball like his life depended on it. Every opponent knew where he was because everyone watching knew as well. An absolute nightmare for defenders, could kick it a mile on both sides and there's very few who could do that in any generation. The complete footballer in my opinion.
