Best player I have ever seen in my 50 years…..he had it all….strength, size, speed, skill and footy brain…..imagine him playing today…..he would dominate…..top 5 player of all time in my opinion
I was lucky enough to see Gazza play on many occasions. Including 89 prelim and GF. I was there when he kicked 14 against Richmond in 89 and 14 against Essendon in 93. Watched him kick 11 against Melbourne one day and 11 against Nth. I saw the best of Gazza. I can’t speak for everyone but I can say this on my behalf, Gary Ablett Snr is the best footballer I have ever seen . And I’ll take that to the grave.
@TheDamo63 I'll never forget the look Mick Martin's face when Leigh Tudor kicked it over his head and he turned to see Gaz mark it, 5 metres out with seconds to go with scores level in the 94 prelim. I was at the Essendon game as well. At the Cattery when he kicked his 100th against Sydney and his 1000th against former cat Stephen O'Reilly playing for Freo. Best two players I have ever seen are called Gary Ablett.
I was also at those games you just mentioned and I agree 100% with everything!! Was seated behind the mark over Pert and remember so vividly how he was standing next to him and seconds later he was on his shoulders!!! This video is sensational and brings back such great memories of watching the Great Man and the mighty Catters! 😃
@M lol who gives a shit. The spice girls were massive across the planet. The Ramones sold about 1 per cent of their records. Who was the better band ? What a stupid comment
Still the best footballer I’ve seen so far in my lifetime. An outrageous combination of strength and pure skill. What other player has a highlight reel like this?
Those were the days when the game was football and not handball as it is today. They had confidence in their kicking ability not just passing it off to others !
Your comment is why I can't deal with the how good would he be in the modern game question. His bumping ability, his defensive prowess for being an attacking player, his ability to kick from just past the square...that isn't the modern game, so seeing his highlights just prove to me how much the game has changed to where he probably would be free kicked into oblivion. He's for when the game was played by men.
explosive power combined with skill, fearlessness and determination made Ablett Snr. the best player the game has ever seen. As a Collingwood supporter I was in awe of this machine of a man back in the day
Long before Robbie Williams sang "Let me Entertain you" Gary Ablett was doing that same thing on the Australian Football Field by letting the way he played the game entertain those who were lucky enough to see him on the day he played between 1982 to 1996.
From 1992 to 1996, he kicked 516 goals in 102 games, averaging 5.1 goals per game. He kicked 375 of his 1021 goals with Geelong, when he won three consecutive Coleman Medals and kicked 100 plus goals in the same year. (1993; 129, 1994; 122, 1995; 124). Between 1993 and 1995, he averaged close to a half dozen goals per game. Between 1985 and 1990, playing on the half forward flank and wing, he kicked nearly 4 goals per game when he booted 444 goals in 113 games. He even kicked nine goals in a losing grand final side against the mighty Hawks where he made a six game cameo in 1982 with 11 goals.Even when he left in 1996, he kicked 69 goals in 17 matches averaging 4.1 goals per game.
