I read this yesterday with Carey saying he was "considered aboriginal" in the areas he grew up in. So him saying "it wasn't that he was ashamed for not talking about it" I call BS... He waited over 20 years after retiring to talk about it cause Nathan Lovett Murray mentioned him as his all time favourite indigenous player. It was all good and dandy to pass yourself off as a white guy in the big boy leagues cause you knew exactly what you'd be facing.

and you just proved the point as to why he DIDN'T want to talk about it. Remember, he was making his name in footy at the same time that Robbie Ahmat was getting vilified, Nicky Winmar lifted up his shirt, Michael Long was copping it, and watching Phil and Jimmy Krakouer cop it every week. He didn't want to put himself through that, and that is respectable, because he was there when most of that racial vilification was happening (I know I was).
Revisiting this 20 years later? better that he revisits it at all than not, and letting the stories and possibilities that define his and his descendants' lives just wither away. Besides.. he's brave enough to face it, not call BS on it like what you're doing.

Mate, he's white as fuck. I have aboriginal and mauri in my family apparently but I still look white as fuck and I don't feel the need to go around saying anything about it unless talking in these contexts. Racism is a horrible cruel thing that is quite rare nowadays and mostly existed as a tool of power. Wayne carey looks white, even if people knew he wouldn't cop shit from anyone because most people who's say horrible shit to aboriginal people or whoever are trying to put em down for other reasons than them actually believing they are superior cause of their skin. People are more complicated than that.

I don't get why people say they're indigenous. Who cares? What does it matter? What about his other heritage which is clearly 90% of his DNA. I live on a remote community in the NT and I can tell you the Aboriginal people out here get pissed off when whitefellas say they're indigenous. If English is not your second language and you don't live in the remote areas of this country then saying you're indigenous is a disgrace and is an embarrassment to the real fellas who live out here. Kudos to Wayne for playing it down.....too many people are saying they're indigenous because their sense of self is so weak that they need to ride on the coattails of something bigger to feel any sense of self worth. Weak as piss. Especially when Howey said "I hope you are indigenous so you're connected to this land in an even greater way" this is total garbage and a massive part of the problem....to think that someone who has indigenous heritage has, by default, a greater connection to the land over other people despite the fact they have spent virtually none of their life living an indigenous context is absolute bullshit.
