In Peru the guides on the inca trail and on the Salkantay do NOT use hip belts and advise hikers to NOT use them. BTW Walked the Camino five times and always carry 12 to 16 kilos. No problem. Recently walked the primitivo in 12 days at age 74.

Al, welcome back! It's good to have you hear sharing some of your knowledge!, You are an inspiration of all of us! The modern science discoveries and the traditional way of how to use the backpack is always a point of friction... the truth is Maybe somewhere in the middle? It's a personal thing no doubt! Big hugs

Great overview of pack fit! Another problem area I see on trails and trekking routes that is not taught is proper shoe fit and lacing techniques that prevent foot pain and blisters. I helped many pilgrims with foot pain just by relacing and properly stabilizing their foot in their shoes and boots. They had been suffering for days and a simple adjustment eliminated the problem. I learned this stuff many years ago when I worked at an outfitting shop but rarely witness boot and hiking sales people sharing this info. So, I don't think it's really taught much anymore - similar to pack fitting.

That is an amazing info! We would love to know this techniques ! And maybe even do a video about it so people can be healthy and save during their walks… tell us more!

Too hard to explain here, but not every foot will fit best in a boot or shoe using the out-of-the-box lace set up. Some folks might need to open the lacing a bit, others might need to xhave a more secure lace over their arch to help secure their heel. Then, this addressing sizing issues by adding or reducing footbed or insole thickness maybe helpful...it's rare for someone to have two fee that are alike. All of those adjustments are a bit too complicated to describe here. I wonder if you know someone who ccan explain in person?

About to go on a backpacking trip, got my backpack on, followed your instructions! I was indeed wandering what the straps at the very top of the shoulder were for! :D

I like your videos a lot. Can you tell something about hiking Camino in winter? Especially the coast way. Are alberges opened when it's not main hiking season?

OR . . . In recent years I've developed age-related degeneration of my right shoulder, so I've changed how I adjust my pack. I put ZERO PERCENT of the weight on my shoulders. You can literally put two fingers under my shoulder straps without touching the top of my shoulders. The weight is 100% on the hip belt, which rests on the ilium (the top curve of the pelvic bone). I tighten the load adjustment straps and sternum strap tighter than I used to, to pull the top of my pack as close to my shoulders as possible. This balances the weight over my hips. If I keep the weight under 6 kg, (which I usually do) I don't feel it at all. This would not work for mountaineering or cross-country skiing because it raises your center of gravity. But now, because I just walk, I find it ideal.

I am planning for Mt first Camino. I hike all the time here in Northern California. I am small in stature 5’3” 135 lbs At the time I have an Osprey backpack #50 it’s for younger teens. Would this work for me on the Camino? I have used it for hiking and camping in the Trinity Alps here in California.

Erica and Me are taking 28l and 30l backpack for 3 months of Camino walking... if you can get 30l maximum, it would be great... see first how many clothes you have and then decide! Don't forget about the dry bag which could help you to reduce the size of you belongings.. hugs
