The only woman who even comes anywhere close to Ann’s voice is Lzzy Hale from Halestorm. They did a couple covers of Heart songs and if I didn’t know better, I would think it was Ann singing. Lzzy even tears Heart songs up live... I have seen both live and both women are beyond talented. Halestorm reminds me so much of Heart and Ann & Nancy’s sassy lyrics and memorable guitar riffs.

I thought they were cousins. Still, I saw them in early 80s in London where they did a one off gig as they were actually on tour with Queen as their opening . I think we caught them just before or right at the beginning of their power ballad years, which I couldn't stand. I was a Dreamboat Annie girl and lucky for us they played what we wanted them to.

Heart was in town and Gretchen asked heart if they wanted to come to her next live show and my dad was working with Gretchen at the time and my dad got to play barracuda with heart...after the show Nancy Wilson told my dad that he did really good because that’s a hard song... any way everyone have a good day and stay safe!

You know, I came of age in the 70's, and the majority of the music you present is the same music my friends and I had blasting out of our home stereos, car stereos, helping us survive teenage angst. And we took it all for granted! We thought all music was this complex, this layered, this rich and structured. Of course all musicians were classically trained -- it was a given. The 70's was an incredible decade of music that came and went, never to be replicated. But because of all the reasons just listed, those songs will live forever.

Ann Wilson started the show by apologizing because she was nursing a sore throat and might not hit the notes right, but she wanted to come out and perform instead of cancel. Heart" at this time was not just Ann and Nancy Wilson. Heart was formed by brothers Mike and Roger Fisher along with Steve Fossen (rhythm guitar) in Seattle without the sisters. Ann was in love with Mike and when he left the US to live in Vancouver Canada to escape the Vietnam draft Ann joined him and Roger did as well. Steve came up later and Nancy joined the band much later. Nancy and Roger Fisher also became an item so the two sisters and two brothers were lovers at the time.
There would have been no "Heart" and no rock hits without Mike and especially Roger. Roger - not Nancy - was the major guitar player and came up with the great riffs and played lead guitar for the rock hits they had. The great riff for this song was created by Roger - not Nancy - and of course Roger played lead guitar on the other songs as well.
My friend Barry Samuels (a booking agent who also became Nick Gilder's manager) was the person Mike called with what was claimed to be the band's last dime for help as the band was going nowhere at the time. Barry gave them their first break and was responsible for their early success as a band.
The members of Heart pretended they were Canadian even after they had a couple of hits like Magic Man (written about Mike Fisher by Ann) and Barracuda. They did this because of the "alleged" illegality of some of them being in Canada without immigration or work permits as well as benefiting from the "Canadian Content" rules for radio and television at the time.
Ann and Nancy have dishonestly taken credit for the band's success and totally re-written history with their false and self serving narrative. You won't hear a peep from either of them about Roger or Mike or the early recordings and successes in Vancouver Canada that propelled them to stardom. Discussing the band "Heart" and their early rock hits without mentioning Roger Fisher does huge disservice to Roger and it is outrageous that Nancy tries to take credit for HIS amazing creativity and playing and so many people believe that lie.

Nancy Wilson use to be married to Cameron Crowe the screenwriter/director/producer/etc, early on Crowe was a journalist for Rolling Stone, got to travel with Zeppelin, that experience bore fruit years later with the movie Almost Famous, which if you have not seen it is a simply fantastic movie that really captures the 70s rock n roll gestalt, sucks you in and makes you feel it.
Magic Man is worth a listen, and there is live performances from back in the day of both Crazy on You and Barracuda that are worth a look if only for the chance to see these girls rocking out in their prime.

Was Cameron Crowe one of the journalists from Rolling Stone that always shat on whatever Zeppelin did? That would be interesting if true, since Nancy loved Zeppelin so much. And if he wasn’t, that’s also interesting, because every review I’ve read about Zeppelin during their run from Rolling Stone was negative.....and usually even venomous.

If someone didn't already mention it - the guitar is run through a flanger pedal. The high "sparkly" sound is done by playing the string harmonics. The strings aren't pressed down, but they're lightly touched at specific points on the neck which cause them to harmonically resonate.

This song ranks right up there with Queen's "Death on Two Legs" as an epic musical "F--- You" to their record label and/or managers. :)

    Hijinx Guitar: Nancy Wilson
    Lead Guitar: Roger Fisher
    Lead Vocal: Ann Wilson
    Electric Piano: Howard Leese
    Bass: Steve Fossen

I think you guys may enjoy this short interview with Roger Fisher, the other guitar player from Heart. He shows how he came up with the opening lick and also the subtle "alien sounds" near the end of the song, and explains how he and his brother Michael (the drummer and the inspiration for the song "Magic Man") co-wrote the song with Ann and Nancy. ua-cam.com/video/CcQik5m0t9Q/v-deo.html

Perfect opportunity to suggest Almost Famous as your next Rock N' Roll movie. Nancy Wilson wrote all the songs for the fictional band Stillwater in that film. Barracuda is every rock girl's anthem, showing that we women can rock just as hard as the boys! A&A community, we need to get our wonderful Gents to 100K it's really easy, we just have to Like, Comment, Share and Subcribe, maybe play some of their videos at a meeting! Great reaction Gents!

It was Nancy (along with her husband Cameron Crowe), not Ann, who wrote most the songs for Stillwater in the movie Almost Famous (including "Fever Dog" and "Love Thing"). Ann did help out on one other song as did Peter Frampton on 2 songs.

Fun Fact: Another song that was written in anger in a single night is “Le Freak” by Chic. They were invited to Studio 54 but the doorman wouldn’t allow them entrance. After failing to convince the doorman that their invitation was legit, they went back to their hotel room and wrote the song. The original chorus of the song used the words “F*ck Off” as a mimic of what the doorman said. They changed those words to “Freak Out” and it became a huge disco hit.
Next recommended Heart song: “Magic Man”

Their earlier record company was promoting the idea that Ann and Nancy were not just sisters but lesbian lovers, just to create buzz and sales. This made the women very angry. After a particular concert, a promoter approached Ann with a question about their relationship that really infuriated her. She went to her hotel room and starting writing "Barracuda." Soon enough, they dropped that record company for another.
      The lyrics:
So this ain't the end, I saw you again, today
I had to turn my heart away
Smiled like the sun, kisses for everyone
      And tales, it never fails
You lying so low in the weeds
I bet you gonna ambush me
You'd have me down, down, down on my knees
      Now wouldn't you, Barracuda? Oh
Back over time we were all trying for free
You met the porpoise and me
No right, no wrong you're selling a song, a name
      Whisper game
If the real thing don't do the trick
You better make up something quick
You gonna burn, burn, burn, burn, burn to the wick
      Oooo, Barracuda, oh yeah
"Sell me, sell you" the porpoise said
Dive down deep to save my head
You, I think you got the blues too
All that night and all the next
      Swam without looking back
Made for the western pools, silly, silly fools
If the real thing don't do the trick, no
You better make up something quick
You gonna burn, burn, burn, burn, burn it to the wick
      Oooo, Barra-Barracuda
      (The "porpoise" means Nancy.)

The electric guitar was Roger Fisher (main lead) and Howard Leese (rhythm and second lead, synths). Nancy Wilson played rhythm acoustic guitar (she also played some electric guitar and mandolin on other tracks). Ann Wilson was killing the vocals. Michael DeRosier on drums and Steve Fossen on bass round out the line up.
