On 4th May in 1982, HMS Sheffield was hit by an exocet missile fired by Argentinian military during the Falkland Islands conflict. Twenty crew members died in the attack. Chris Purcell was a sailor on board and a survivor. We met in Portsmouth where he told ynuk.tv his story of what happened. Falkland Islands photos courtesy Chris and Louise Purcell.

Remembering those brave men on HMS Sheffield now 38 years ago. God bless their spirits! They served their country well and we should be proud and never ever forget them - every day until the sun goes down I will remember them. The name HMS Sheffield will live on in their memory.
Thank you, good to know you're proud.
Im proud because my dad's dad died on the HMS Sheffield Barry was his name my middle name
They died in vain by a piece of land for which they felt nothing...They didn't even know where those islands were.
The real culprits of starting the war: The Royal Navy. The Royal Navy needed that war and, along with other actors, prepared it and started it on May 1.
Shame on you Royal Navy!
Even 30 years after he is still having a hard time talking about it and being at peace with the idea of surviving. Brave man.
I agree - also an extremely nice man
"Survivors guilt" you say. Understandable, but you have to always remind yourself that here you still are telling the story and preserving the valour of those brave men who stood beside you, as a testament of what I'm sure they would of done for you also. In doing this you live not just for yourself but for them also.
All my respect and admiration for you. Thankyou sir, for queen and country.
A touching view of this story and grateful you passed it on.
I can’t imagine what it’s like obviously, but in those circumstances, you have to think that you have an obligation to live on and be happy specifically because there are so many of your comrades who aren’t as fortunate as you. And it’s your duty to live out your own life in memory of those who can’t.
We mustn't forget those who lost their lives. Thank you
Did you replace the HMS Sheffield or the Ark royal In the acusistion of our new navy ships.
R.I.P our lost heroes. God bless their family's and the survivers.
I believe it was the Ark but maybe an expert out there can help. Thank you for the condolences.
God bless...
That's lovely, thank you
an uncredible story Chris but why this 'war'? :(
thank you
Por intereses comerciales de la FIC (Falkland Islands Company).
Por intereses políticos (Reeleccion de la mother fucker Margaret Tatcher).
Por intereses de de Roya Navy (no querían desprograma la flota de mar).
The French make such bloody good "fire and forget" missiles.
thank you for connecting
Shame on you France!...
Mas de 400 ex soldados y marines se suicidaron después de la guerra de Malvinas. Mis respetos por ellos que los mandaron a morir... No era un picnic como se lo habían dicho..
No era un picnic como se lo habían dicho - who have you been listening to?
Actually 1.5 sailors died in the attack
Thank you for letting us know
Pity the 2005 subway bomb says otherwise (as well almost every person from a minority interviewed during the London riots last year).
thank you
You are almost 40 years (i guess, 1973?) and you waste your time posting these comments? Get a life.
thank you
Invaded by Pirates! Long Live Argentina
Viva la patria
thank you
Viva Argentina..!!! 🇦🇷 Outside our islands...!!!!
That "illegal war" was between 76-78. All responsible people have been put on jail (after a pardon was declared void). No other country in the world has made that. Not sure then what "first hand effects of illegal war" you refer to. What you, your friend, and your family would see, pretty soon, in your lifetime, is the effects of the alienated & discriminated Muslim British youth population. Believe me.
thank you
Again, you are almost 40 years. Get a life, get a wife, a job (if you are one of the 2.8 million Brits out of job now, on benefits). "makes my blood boil". Uh, the almost 40 years old guy can't control himself and needs to resort to insults using the "f" workd. I tell you: instead of replying to this video, use your time to learn something useful like a second major language (: Almost 40 years old: P-A-T-H-E-T-I-C.
thank you
The real facts:

Inglaterra oculta sus perdidas materiales y humanas hasta el 2.072. Por vergüenza..
Por vergüenza - is your point of view
You, who ever you are, are not telling the truth, your memory probably is failling, the only attack the SHEFFIELD received, was on May 1°,1982, was attacked by a squadron of Dagger figther-bombers from the Air Argentine Force. As a result of this attack, there was an internal explosion, as the damage control of the ship could not contain the fire that ocurred spread to the whole ship, on the night of May 1° a series of explosions they shook the SHEFFIELD, the sound of explosions and the glow of explosions were heard and seen from the island by Argentine troops. By May 4th, the SHEFFIELD was totally burned, abandoned by its crew and to the gutter. On May 10th, while being towed by the YARMOUTH, it turned and sank. At what moment was it attacked by an EXOCET missile? There is and old saying: " ... to lie and eat fish, you have to be very careful ... "°
Manuel Vera what fractured fairy tale did you get this nonsense from? Please tell which group the Daggers were from, who the pilot was and especially what ordanance was used that would leave such a gaping hole in the side. A dumb bomb wouldn't have done it. I have the names of the Etendard pilots and the numbers of the aircraft they flew. Also lengthy account of the attack--info on it not hard to find, even Argentine sources admit it was by Etendards. Occurred on 4 May as well, not the first. You must have found information covered up for 36 years or you don't know what the hell you're talking about. I'm guessing the latter. Hope for a reply soon....other than calling me names because you'll have to admit you're wrong.
Would like to know your information source as well.
