    Other Navy ships in the area detected the incoming enemy aircraft and put up their defences and jammers, and they sent out warnings but the Sheffield was sending a transmission at the time and didn’t get the message.

      Exactly the same way the Ukrainians got Moskva. Using that particular form of comms caused Sheffield to have some of its defences down.
      Certainly not a problem with RN vessels now. That it's still a problem for the Russians shows just how awful the technology level of their navy is.

      @@davidpnewton That's somewhat unclear actually. The inspection reports for the Moskva said that both radar systems were inoperable, as was the CIWS. It might have been that they jammed themselves, or it might have been to try to cover up their ineptitude.

    I was in Los Angeles California USA at the time. I remember the dichotomy of feelings of people that I associated with. Those that were Latino/Hispanic were supporting Argentina. Everyone else was supporting UK. I had even framed a copy of the iconic Newsweek cover of the Falklands War (The Empire Strikes Back). Unfortunately I lost that in one of my many moves. This story is sad and moving. I salute those that served and those that didn't come back.

Being ex-service I was in Portsmouth the night of the 04 May 82 - it was horrible - mainly with the not knowing and no immediate visibility of the casualty lsit. Be strong mate.

      I'm reminded of the words of a Tommy who fought in Italy. "We soon learned that our real enemy was not the Germans or the Italians, but fate. Fate, as random and un-caring as army orders. "You and you, dead. The rest of you, on the truck.""

    I have an infinity with HMS Sheffield as my husband served on the Cruiser Sheffield and my daughter served on the Frigate Sheffield, and my friend lost her husband when the Exocet hit, he was a cook in the galley, I was so shocked when the news came on the tv about her which left me feeling totally bereft, so what it must be like for surviving members of her crew must be dreadful, There should be no sense of guilt as the surviving crew were doing their duty and I feel it was so brave of Chris to talk about it, I hope it gave him a sense of peace. Thinking every year on the 4th May about all on the HMS Sheffield, the survivors and those that lost their lives,, I’m an ex Jenny Wren

Just recognised a shipmate a I joined up with in that last photo :( . BZ Shiny Sheff never forgotten. .... I think I got those brief details right. Apologies if I haven't.

    • @davidpnewton
      @davidpnewton Рік тому

      Oh dear. Get your basic facts right!
      The A-4 Skyhawk did NOT carry Exocet. It was the Super Etendard that carried Exocet. Yes Exocet is a French system but why did the Argentines only have five? Partially through extensive French efforts to stop them getting any more.
      Oh and how many sides of the war did Type 42 destroyers of Sheffield's design fight on? 2. The UK supplied 2 to the Argentines a few years before 1982.

    • @davidpnewton
      @davidpnewton 2 місяці тому

      @mateowag yes French efforts. The OP is a mixture of lies and utter nonsense.
      As for your contribution? Also a lie. Thatcher never made that threat and more importantly never would have made it. She understood the strategic calculus and uses of nuclear weapons. She knew that for small wars like the Falklands nukes are essentially useless as the political fallout of using them is vastly disproportionate to any useful military effect achieved.
