The lyrics are about ancient warfare in Ireland. The Emerald is Ireland. Phil Lynott the singer and bassist and songwriter is an absolute legend in Dublin. One of the only black men in Dublin at the time. A personal hero of mine being from Dublin myself. We've a Statue of him on our most famous shopping street in the city.
The Emerald Isle!
Now on to Rory Gallagher
First rock band I saw live. Opening for Queen
@@johnduval8891 Deadly. Never got to see them. Phillo died four years before I was born. Various members have played Dublin over the years but it's not Lizzy without Phillo. Wouldn't bother going.
I would love to see that statue. Googling it now
Thin Lizzy was SO SO SO SO under appreciated, Iron Maiden said Thin Lizzy inspired them to do the duel guitar harmonies. Give it another chance. Thin Lizzy grows into your soul over time.
Recognition of the dual guitars gets under rated. They had a big influence on a lot of metal bands, Metallica does a wonder cover of Whisky in the Jar-O.
Big debate about whether Thin Lizzy or Judas Priest started the dual leads guitar approach.
@@comeonman9138 It was absolutely Thin Lizzy because they started doing it in 1969 and perfected it around 73-74 in time for Iron Maiden to copy it.
clivebuckwheat Priest has been around since ‘69 and certainly had a more direct influence on Maiden, even though Maiden is too arrogant to admit it 😂
@@comeonman9138 but It was only with the arrival of the halford in 73 that the priest started impacting the scene and by that time Lizzy was already big. I believe that Thin Lizzy influenced a lot more maiden, just listen to the riffs of the maiden and you already recognize the influence of thin lizzy. Anyway, there's another band that made twin lead guitars before thin lizzy, priest and iron. It was Wishbone Ash.
He was Phil Lynott he was from Dublin Ireland
He was black irish and “The Man”
Died in ‘86
Gone too soon💔🌹😔
Ryan McBride Arguably the coolest rock and roll singer of all time. Maybe some are better, but Phil is the COOLEST ever. Plus he rocked the bass
You seem to know a lot. So I have to ask you is Garry Moore On this track.
Shspurs1 Not Back then, I think it was Lynott, Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson and Downey
@@shspurs1342 Garry Moore did however perform this song as a tribute to Phil Lynott, a few years before he himself passed away.
He was not black irish! He was black and he was irish but, Black Irish is completely different!
Ah, good old Thin Lizzy. Truly one of the most underrated bands there ever was. They deserve to be revered in the same way Led Zeppelin is, in my opinion; so many amazing bands cite them as a big influence.
If you ever decide to react to another Thin Lizzy song in the future, I recommend “Got to Give it Up” off of Black Rose. Some fantastic guitar playing on that whole album, but this song in particular really does it for me.
Thanks for the videos guys!
I cannot like your comment enough! Thin Lizzy is a musical giant, that all the greats look up to. I discovered them 18 years ago when I first heard The Boys are Back in town on A Knights Tale. I decided to dig deeper, and was completely blown away by their "bad reputation". Absolutely one of my favorites.
@@CrashAndBurnProductions got to give it up is a heartbreaking rocker for sure.
Thin Lizzy are gods. Emerald is a classic. Phil Lynnot was a groundbreaking musician and human being. He was Black and Irish in the 1970s and inspired by 1950s rock n roll. The fact he had success in that era was amazing and down to talent and attitude. Most of lizzy's back catalog is classic rock royalty. "Black Rose" is more of the same about Irish history and mythology (and has a truly amazing solo). Honestly, Lizzy are one of the most important bands in rock history. So many songs to choose from...
THIS ^ Phil was a MONSTER on the bass. So many fantastic songs to choose from, and then when Gary Moore joined the band it got even better.
Black Rose is my favourite!
Thank for nailing it on the head. I was waiting for the Lost In Vegas crew to pick up on that!
Possibly the most enigmatic front man ever frankly? Cheers,Len.
@Joshua Manning 50% Irish, born in England to a Guiana national father.
You guys should do a semi year end list of your 5 favorite songs this year you’ve discovered through this channel and still actually play. It’ll be interesting to see what has stuck with you
Yeah, that would be class!
Good idea
Brilliant idea
Thin Lizzy was a great rock band. One of the GREATEST! Phil Lynott with his beautiful Irish accent and great bass playing skills was a KING! The band was great, Phil is a Legend; they all are!
Emerald is a great song!!
Vue deux fois thin lizzy en concert et aussi Phil lynott en concert solo, dommage que la drogue la emporté trop tôt..un grand artiste avec de jolies texte et une grande énergie.
Thin Lizzy is the best band to come out of Ireland, period. U2 can go and shite lol. Lizzy's Live and Dangerous double LP is regarded by a lot of people as one of, if not *the* best, live albums ever. The Cowboy Song>Boys are Back in Town segue is one of the greatest 1-2s ever...definitely check it out.
madDdog 67 upvoted for “U2 can go and shite“
I dig some Thin Lizzy but for my taste the best bands from Ireland are Primordial and And So I Watch You From Afar. Respect to OGs though.
I don't know mate. I love Thin Lizzy, but even if you don't like U2, can't stand Bono, or overall, you gotta acknowledge they are one of the rock greats. Not as technical, not even close as players to Thin Lizzy, but the compositions, the songs were great, especially in the 80s
It Can't be better than Kiss Alive! That's a tough live album to beat
Rory Gallagher offers some stiff competition though

Thin Lizzy helped popularize the twin/dual guitar attack.
One of the first groups to have that in hard rock.
Metallica cite them as an early influence, especially on their late bassist Cliff Burton.
And those dual harmony lead solos.
Emerald, the song about the Emerald isle/Ireland, also does not feature an actual chorus.
The breakdown between verses could be a chorus, except it's entirely instrumental.
That could be why it did not appeal to you the first time around.
No catchy chorus to sing along with.☺
I love this song.
Good song to drive fast to.
Phil Lynott was the original bass player and Lizzy's lead vocalist.
He's mixed race.
His mother is white.
His father was a gentleman of color.
Phil died in 1985.
Originally it was suspected it might have been a heroin overdose.
But apparently his death was from complications from sepsis and pneumonia.
As someone else noted.
Them and Wishbone Ash
Father: A Brazilian sailor? That's what I read somewhere. But Phil's 100% Irish, no doubt.
@@JeffRyemon WIshbone Ash on Argus was orgasmic, Blowing Free and Warrior are simply masterpieces in guitar work and harmonies
The first band to have a twin dual guitar attack was the Quicksilver Messenger service
Actually heroin was one of the biggest reasons why he got sick and collapsed
Fell across this channel while coming to UA-cam for my daily dose of Lizzy (just found Johnny The Fox Live in Detroit!! OMG)
I pray these guys do themselves a favor and read up on Thin Lizzy and their challenges with rotating lead guitars and other mishaps, Lizzy curse. Philip Lynott - greatest frontman. Period. Bassist, Black, Irish, poet, rocker and singer.
See: For Those Who Love to Live, The Hero and the Madman, Freedom Song, Bad Reputation, Wild One, Things Ain’t Working Out Down at the Farm and countless others. You’ll hear rock, soul, pop, romance, brilliance.
Each year Phil Lynott is celebrated on the anniversary of his death with the “Vibe for Philo” in Dublin featuring Lizzy tribute bands, poets, fans, and even a play (for the 33rd on 2019). I’m going and I only discovered Thin Lizzy this year! 🎸
Johnny the fox live is just beyond compare.
“Cowboy Song”, Whiskey in the Jar”, “Boys are Back in Town”
Dancing in the Moonlight
Cowboy!!!
I've been recommending this one for a while. I think what you guys are "missing" here is the tremendous, dual, melodic lead guitar playing. Back in '76, almost nobody was doing this. The paradigm back then was rhythmic riffs followed by improvised (typically blues-based) soloing, and that includes Zeppelin, Sabbath, Purple, AC/DC, etc. Two bands were really responsible for bringing dual, harmonized, melodic guitar leads to the forefront: Judas Priest and Thin Lizzy. Both were an immense influence on the next generation of metal bands, including Iron Maiden and Metallica. Emerald is really the best showcase for that side of Thin Lizzy.
Thin Lizzy covered a lot of ground in their career, and this is only one "side" of them. The Boys are Back in Town was their biggest hit (still played on classic rock radio). Whiskey in the Jar and Jailbreak were also considerable hits (the former's an Irish folk tune cover). They did some proto-80s metal stuff like Cold Sweat, some R&B grooves like Dancing in the Moonlight, and some great straight-up rock stuff like The Rocker and Don't Believe a Word; sweet, smooth blues like Still in Love With You (best heard live), beautiful ballads like Little Girl in Bloom. A truly great and versatile band.
Rick Henderson I came here to say all of this! Also, Emerald is my favorite of their songs. Another aspect y’all may not have picked up on is that the solo is an interplay of the two guitarists, a sort of call and response. Another great song is Massacre, and Southbound is amazing! And, I agree, the best way to hear Still in Love with You is on Live and Dangerous. I’m disappointed y’all weren’t struck by the ferocity of The Emerald, but there’s a lot more out there to enjoy by this seminal band.
this
You are forgetting to mention Wishbone ash as major influence of the dual guitar leads
You can absolutely hear Thin Lizzy dual guitar influence in some of Iron Maiden’s material.
@@grindmaster7433 Wishbone is a band I've heard of but haven't heard. I'll make sure to check them out, though. Thanks for the rec!
Any metal fan would instantly recognize that Thin Lizzy's guitar work was massively influential on heavy metal and power metal. I had never heard this song before, but the riffs were great - an obvious precursor to bands like Iron Maiden.
Thin Lizzy is a powerful influence on Metallica (and thrash metal) as well. That twin lead guitar solos that we heard, in songs like fight fire with fire, for example, it came from Thin Lizzy influence! I believe that lizzy were one of the first bands to employ dual lead guitar.
Great Song mate, loved it the first time I listened to it
@@orgasmatron1916 If you like twin lead guitars you should listen to Wishbone Ash, they predate Thin Lizzy by some years and are generally recognised as one of the first bands to feature twin leads. Steve Harris has been quoted as saying Iron Maiden wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for Wishbone Ash. Try listening to Throw Down The Sword from the Argus album (1972), In fact, just listen to the whole Argus album, possibly Wishbone Ash's finest hour.
I agree! First time I hear a clear influence of Iron Maiden and Steve Harris!
Jerry Campbell . April Wine came out around the same time . Check out roller or i like to rock , they share leads.
Thin Lizzy are more important than a lot of people - even hard rock/heavy metal fans - realize. Influential to bands like Iron Maiden, etc. I don't think a lot of your subscribers/followers think very hard when making suggested trakes to introduce you to bands. I love this song, but it's not a good introduction. Kind of like starting out listening to "Dogman" by King's X - great song if you "get" the band, but not the best place to begin. Here's a few Lizzy suggestions: "The Rocker," "Still in Love With You," "Suicide," "Jailbreak," "Don't Believe a Word," "Massacre," "Bad Reputation," "Dancing in the Moonlight (It's Caught Me in Its Spotlight)," "Waiting For An Alibi," "Got To Give It Up," "Chinatown," "Genocide (The Killing of the Buffalo)," "Hollywood (Down On Your Luck)," "Fats," and any of the first five songs from Thunder and Lightning: ""Thunder and Lightning," "This Is the One," "The Sun Goes Down," "The Holy War," and/or "Cold Sweat." Man, I'm going to go listen to that album right now...see ya! Long Live Phil Lynott! ;)
The influence of Thin Lizzy just CANNOT be overstated. I haven't listened to this song in a while, and hearing it now as a review type thing, I can immediately hear about a dozen later metal bands out of that guitar work.
It's hard to really feel how badass they are now, because being you've been hearing them your entire life in the bands they've influenced.
Hey Lads at Lost in vegas, hope you see this comment, it’s the first i’ve ever commented on a video in 10 years so; I’m telling this how it is and hope it comes across the way I want it to (Recommened songs later in the comment). First off I want to thank you immensely for bringing my favourite band in the world into the spotlight that the world has either never heard of or have forgotten. Thin Lizzy is the best ever band to come out of the whole of Ireland North or South, which were lost and forgotten (not even most people over here remember them anymore because of all the pop music from the world took over). Their singer and bassist Philip Paris Lynott was a Black Irish man born in 1949, Ireland had never seen anything like this before. And this is where your irish history comes into play, basically it was very tough growing up over here between wars, troubles etc. Phil believed in equality and contributed i’d say to 60% of the reason that Ireland is now equal in the fact that everybody is now accepted black or white ( There were a lot of assholes over here and still are that care what race you are or if you are protestant or Catholic, Phil is a hero). For a first in Irish history this legendary man and his band would soar to the top because of how amazingly talented they were as musicians and Phil’s charm towards the crowds and fans on the street (his care of people no matter what you were) he really got the crowd going. He was a brilliant storyteller. They were the only band who could do anything (Irish folk songs, love songs, really heavy metal songs, fast or slow songs, drum solos, guitar solos, harmonising all while telling a deep story and rhyming). For Ireland music was all local playing in bars and word of mouth and the most common music at the time was just old irish folk lore songs so for them to make it big was phenomenal, he even has a bronze statue erected in his memory in the capital Dublin which was a first. And now for a handful of their songs in a variety of genres: Are you ready, Massacre, Suicide, Angel of Death, Sarah, black rose, bad reputation, waiting for an alibi, Johnny, fools gold, chinatown, cold sweat, sugar blues, sha la la(best drum solo ever), opium trail, for those who love to live(about the footballer who died called George Best) theres so many I couldn’t list. The ones they’re famous for are good songs but not the best of thin lizzy; the boys are back in town, jailbreak, running back, whiskey in the jar, dancing in the moonlight and the cowboy song. If you’ve read to this point I thank you with my heart and keep up the good work guys!
yes
The Hardcore Pie, I can't top your eloquent response. I'm also from Ireland. I find it hard to believe that they haven't heard 'The boys are back in town' at least. You're right that Phil Lynott was one in a million. A black man growing up in working class Dublin who went on to front one of the most important rock bands in the world. A band that influenced countless rock and metal bands. This reaction really makes little of their influence. I doubt that Ryan and George even read youtube comments anymore. I used to be a massive fan of this channel but after their dismissal of Faith No More I gave up all hope.
+Conor O'Reilly Thanks for reading my comment, it means a lot even if nobody else reads it haha. Definitely an underrated band for sure
@@Nuclear666Banana I'm sure that many more people will read your comment. I can only hope that Lost in Vegas pay attention because you are so spot on.
I thank “The Hardcore Pie” for that bit of education. It’s always good to learn about people who did good things.
Do Cowboy Song.
Thin Lizzy is weird. I tried them out once when I was 15, and didn't like them. then i tried again about a year later and still didn't like it. then I finally tried them a third time just before college and now they're my favorite band. it just takes a few listens to work their way into your head.
Nathanael Fosaaen Very funny..Glad you like them now...what do you like best? Black Rose? Thunder and Lightning? The old stuff? Gary More? There were not many players/singers like Phil
The second half of Black Rose is probably my favorite, but Bad Rep and Jailbreak are both bangers. "The Pressure Will Blow" from Renegade and "Fool's Gold" from Johnny the Fox are way underrated. I love the shit out of Gary Moore. Dude's vibrato was untouchable.
They should have heard the live version of Emerald from Live and Dangerous... much better!
Judas Priest agreed, i heard the live and dangerous version first and as such the album version was a bit meh for me
@@mcdonnellkieran68 They should have listened to the Gary Moore / Scott Gorham one from One Night In Dublin. In fact, they should listen to the version of Black Rose from that show
Completely agree. The dualing guitar solos on the Live and Dangerous version are mesmerizing
The live and dangerous version made me pick up a guitar. And for that to Gary Moore.. I owe a debt!
Incredible song. The live and dangerous one is.. without a doubt is insane! The solo . With Gary Moore.. oh my god.
I think only Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson plays on that album.@@TeaLeafThief
First black rocker from Ireland!!! Read his story!!! Love love love this man & band!!!!
Their most popular song is The Boys Are Back in Town probably followed by Jailbreak and Bad Reputation. However I prefer more b-sided tracks like Dancing in the Moonlight, Warriors, Got to Give it up. Phil Lynott the singer and bass player was a black irishman. A legendary one at that. They even put a statue of him up in Dublin.
The Boys are back in Town is definitely followed by Whiskey in the Jar.
I watch your channel all the time. I've been waiting impatiently for his. This band and this album and it's impact on American rock in the mid-70's is hard to understate. Cliff Burton, RIP bass player for Metallica considered this band his favorite. Lead singer was Phil Lynnot, a illegitimate Black man with a white mother, raised in Ireland in a time when such things were very taboo. This isn't their best song it isn't their worst. But they are a favorite of mine,my brother's and many others. Roisin Dubh, title track , Johnny the Fox, Bad Reputation, . On the jailbreak album, The Cowboy Song, The Warrior, Romeo and the Lonely girl. He was steeped in the poetry of his country, a mix of hero and cad. Died way too young from drug use. The world a bleaker place without him.
Got to give it up, great song!
I would say "Cowboy Song' was probably more popular than "Bad Reputation".
Sean Crane I love Dancing in the Moonlight. Have you heard the Smashing Pumpkins cover of that song? Def one of my favorite covers.
Finally some Thin Lizzy! I'd fight a man over Thin Lizzy, easily the most underrated band of all time.
What about T-Rex - I think they are almost unknown outside the UK but had some great songs.
@@celticbarry9877 - Yeah I think they are definitely near the top of underrated bands, along with Faith No More.
Thin Lizzy aren't THAT underrated, in the scheme of things. They are regarded as one of the best and most popular early heavy-metal style hard rock outfits of the seventies. Maybe they're considered second tier when they should be first. They're not quite as widely lauded as they might deserve but at least they are famous in broader circles than most. I'm saying this as an Irish person tho, so maybe my sense of their fame is entirely overblown from exposure to Irish radio. Still, i feel that they have at least 2 hugely famous songs, Boys are back in Town, and Whiskey in the Jar.
Compare their fame to, let's say that of Budgie; from just across the water in Wales. They've been forgotten, for the most part, but at their peak were a magical trio whose talent made comparisons to Rush fairly reasonable, and not just because the singer-bassist was a gangly bespectacled Ramone-looking mofo. Like Thin Lizzy, they did have a song covered by Metallica,(Breadfan).

@@rekwon666 - Thin Lizzy in America are basically unknown, people only know "The Boys Are Back In Town" and "Jailbreak" but no one seems to know who plays those two songs...
Recently bands like Anthrax, Megadeth and Metallica have shed more light on them but generally for most people in the US they got overlooked/ overshadowed by bands like AC/DC, KISS, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith and Black Sabbath.
It's a sad state of affairs. Cheers for the insight. They deserve a whole lot better
Real rock fans know that Liizzy along with ufo were one of the most underrated bands of all time, partly due to their own drug use.one of my life’s highlights was visit to Bruges pub in Dublin seeing Phil’s statue and getting private tour of the bands downstairs lounge where bands like maiden, metallica etc have all paid homage with a few pints. Also must mention that Scott gorham is one of the nicest musicians to meet and is keeping their spirit alive with black star riders
I'm gonna throw in Free too if I may.
All good except it’s Bruxelles not Bruges 🙂
The Boys Are Back in Town is their signature song IMO. ✌🏼
Definitely should have gone with that as their first thin lizzy song
Great that you finally got to Thin Lizzy, A few things:
- These guys were pioneers of the twin guitar, trading off solos
- Influenced Metallica, Iron Maiden, Megadeth and many more
- Singer/Bassist was Black Irish. Died very young in 1986. Legend
Other songs to check out - Black Rose, Got to give it up, Still in love with you, Cowboy song
Great drummer too.
I agree with most of this, but Phil Lynott was a Black Irishman, not Black Irish.
Black Irish refers to a sub-sect of the Irish population who had olive skin and dark hair, possibly survivors of the Spanish Armada washing up on Irish shores. Confusing name, to be fair
Got to give it up and Chinatown
Thin Lizzy’s most epic song is Black Rose. Full of amazing solos and duelling guitars.
BenRangel a very underrated but awesome song. One of my top favorites
Yes, Black Rose is amazingly, lyrically and musically
EMERALD is the song that made me first want to learn and play the guitar and is in my top 5 songs of all time. Phil Lynott the singer, bass player and founding member of Thin Lizzy was born in England but raised in Dublin Ireland, his mother was Irish and his father was Guyana/Guiana (British Guiana). Lynott was so loved and respected that after his death a life sized statue was erected in the center of Dublin Ireland to honor him.
Jailbreak is the quintessential Thin Lizzy album, beside Emerald this album included hits like the title track Jailbreak, Warriors the awesome Cowboy Song and of course their biggest hit The Boys Are Back In Town which is still a Staple on every Classic and Rock station in America. Thin Lizzy set the benchmark for the Dual Lead Guitar Rock bands, bands that followed and were influenced by Thin Lizzy include Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Def Leppard, Megadeth just to name a few.
If you want to hear a really album with great songs from a band that only made 2 albums check out RAM JAM, their self titled first album is filled with great 70s rock songs. It's one of those albums (CDs) that you put on when you're on a long road trip, songs like Black Betty, High Steppin, Right on the Money. Better yet is their 1990 compilation album The Very Best of Ram Jam. Another AWESOME 70s band you need to check out is UFO, to get the best of them listen to the The Best of UFO: Gold Collection album..... freaking AWESOME.
If you like the Blues especially Texas Blues and want to hear the guitarist Jimi Hendrix said was the best he's seen (Billy Gibbons) listen to EARLY ZZ Top albums Rio Grande Mud, Tres Hombres or Tejas, songs like Master of Sparks, El Diablo, Move Me on Down the Line, Francine, Just Got Paid, Goin' Down to Mexico. You can't get any better!!!
Damn Emerald is one of my favorite Thin Lizzy tunes.
Same here! A bit disappointed they didn't like it more, haha.
Tough song to use as an introduction to the band. “Jailbreak,”The Cowboy Song”, or even “The Boys are back in Town” would have been a better first listen.
Thin Lizzy - Don’t Believe A Word
Thin Lizzy is a great band, most popular songs are Jailbreak, The Boys Are Back In Town, Whiskey In The Jar (Which Metallica did a cover version) Phil Lynott (Rest In Peace) was their vocalist bass player and main songwriter, Thin Lizzy had 2 great guitarists in Gary Moore (Rest In Peace) and John Sykes known as a member of Tygers Of Pan Tang and Whitesnake. He died from pneumonia in 1986. He had another hit with his former Thin Lizzy bandmate Gary Moore called Out In The Fields recorded in 1984. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Lynott
Songs I would personally recommend are Cold Sweat Thunder And Lightning and Angel Of Death to react to, much better songs in my opinion.
they didnt write whiskey in the jar its a really old folk song..........the grateful dead even did it in the 60s
Six Feet Under covered Jailbreak
Worship of Moore and Sykes is understandable. But the era of Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham is the one that put TL on the map. Nothing that Moore or Sykes brought to the table can eclipse that Jailbreak album or the Live and Dangerous album. Those were the highpoint of TL without question. That being said, the LiL guys had the right album, just the wrong song.
Although Phil's death was recorded as being due to pneumonia and heart failure. In reality he suffered from an addiction to heroin which caused his health issues and was transported to drug dependency center before being taken to a hospital. His addiction to heroin is well documented. RIP
Whiskey in the jar is a far older piece of folk music. It's funny most people think they wrote that
i actually prefer this sound than their commercial stuff
Try Black Rose by Thin Lizzy :)
The guitar solo battle in that song is one of the greats
I love that you noticed the lead singer's voice. Thin Lizzy was an Irish band, and their frontman, Phil Lynott, was the son of a white woman from Dublin and a black man from British Guiana. Phil's well revered in Dublin - there's a statue honoring his memory.
I'm surprised "wild one" hasn't been brought up. hell, the whole fighting album is great.
Thin Lizzy is special in the fact that they became known as one of the first bands to really put an emphasis on twin guitar harmonies and "tag team" solos. Most Lizzy fans consider Phil Lynott (lead singer/bassist) as a master songwriter and somewhat of a poet. They're one of those bands that have some mighty fine hits but their best tracks are the deep cuts. They were a major influence to a lot of rock/metal bands, Metallica in particular (especially Cliff Burton). You can hear Thin Lizzy's inspiration in old school Metallica tracks like Orion, which is a Cliff Burton tour de force.
Paul Leach Phil was more of a storyteller than a songwriter. Kind of a heavy Springsteen
The Boys Are Back in town, Waiting for an alibi, Jailbreak, Don't Believe A Word... some of best songs of this Irish band! Must check!
You need to hear "Angel of Death" or "The Holy War" guys...

along with Wishbone Ash (which was Steve Harris' favourites, i think the guitarists was more into Thin Lizzy, but who isn't into Lizzy?)
Nobody is a bigger fan of Thin Lizzy than me. Will never forget seeing them on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert on a Saturday night in the 70's. Still the best live rock performance I've ever seen. BLEW MY MIND. Live and Dangerous is the best live rock album(s) ever.
Phil Lynott has a bronze statue in Dublin Ireland because of what he meant to his country. It is so cool and unlikely that a black dude in white ass Ireland was able to make such an explosive impact, so much so, that his countrymen decided to honor him in a conspicuous rock star way, a fitting bust for Ireland's most conspicuous rock star ever.
Why would you make such an anti white comment?
@@larrylampshade1734 Only Lampshades see it that way.
Thin Lizzy influenced a ton of bands to come, not the least of which was the mighty Metallica. With the bulk of their early catalog, the best versions are on a live album "Live and Dangerous". I personally love Phil's voice, and think he was underrated as a bass player. The interesting thing with Lizzy is that they would write everything from quite mellow stuff, all the way to songs that flirted with being heavy metal, with some groovy stuff mixed in.
TRIUMPH....CANADIAN BAND ....POWERFUL HARD ROCK BAND FROM THE 70'S AND 80'S
Magic Power
Great suggestion
I would like them to do...New York City Streets part 1 and 2....so they can here both Rik and Gil sing each song...ironically Gil sings the mellower song !!
@@hoosierdaddy2308 either that or the City....that song is so above most musically and Sonically, !!!!
It's a little on the nose but, Lay It on the Line.
"Johnny The Fox Meets Jimmy The Weed". Guys you gonna love the groove of this Thin Lizzy song!!
btw, love your analysis!! great show!
Jailbreak or Cold Sweat. Thats the jams you want. Also, Thin Lizzy are from Ireland. As you asked.
UFO - Rock Bottom (1974 studio version) - greatest guitar solo that ever was - give it a spin
Strangers in the Night version is much better
boys are back in town is probably the best known thin lizzy song and is one of their best
I'm guessing these guy didn't notice how the bass was right in there with the twin lead guitars. Didn't notice the chord progressions. I don't think they noticed it's changing time signatures on the drums either.
Honestly this is one of my favorite songs of all time.
Delford Bob Jr yeah it was a terrible review
THIN LIZZY - BAD REPUTATION
Agree with both
Love them
Oh, yeah!
m.ua-cam.com/video/gqSzDJGFCgI/v-deo.html
As for thin Lizzy songs: Cold Sweat
I love how your instinctive reaction is to nod you head to the beat, this is my favorite song to headbang to, rock on lads.
Thin Lizzy is one of the most underrated and yet most important bands ever. Very influential. Phil Lynott was a damn great singer. In his youth the was in a Blues band together with Gary Moore - Skid Row. Not the "18 and life" Skid Row, although they are named after that earlier band. Gary Moore has joined Thin Lizzy for multiple short stints, the longest one shortly before he embarked on his solo career. It was glorious nonetheless. A few great guitar players have played in Thin Lizzy over the years, like Moore, Vivian Campbell and John Sykes. There even is a successor, although only is one actual Thin Lizzy member left, named Blackstar Riders. I saw them live as support for Judas Priest last year. Not a band you need to see. Phil and Gary were close friends and they collaborated multiple times outside of Thin Lizzy. "Out in the fields" was a great one. After Phil had passed away he wrote a few songs that were dedicated to him or mentioned him. One is even called "Blood of Emeralds".
The war they're singing about is "The Troubles" - the civil war in Ireland. They were Irish, just like Gary Moore and the constant civil war was pretty formative on all of them and they sang about it, partly in order to cope with the experience.
As for Thin Lizzy, one song to listen to would be "Cold sweat". In this song Phil sings about his fight with addiction. Something that would lead to his death. The song was on their final studio album, Thunder and Lightning.
“Wild One” is a hugely underrated song by this band, in my humble opinion.
Billy Trespassers I love that song so much
Definitely...great guitar line on that one
The lead singer Phil Lynott was a black guy from Ireland. Pretty unusual.
I agree with Wes ley, at the time but not nowadays.
Probably didn't have much fun at local bars full of white supremacists drinking and punching anything that walks and talks.
@@soullessSiIence You never been to Ireland I guess.
@@soullessSiIence haha now he was a fuckin legend and absolutely beloved!
Ireland's not the USA.
"Cold Sweat" One of their top five.
The Sun Goes Down absolute classic Phil Lynott True Irish Legend RIP Philo
UFO....anything off the strangers in the night live album. Lights out, cherry, loser, love to love.
Best live album ever. Period. Made in japan 2nd. What about rock bottom?
@@ssRocker-nn3tp so true, amazing more folks dont recognize what an absolute fantastic album it is.
Man, that's my favorite Thin Lizzy song! Those dual guitars just do it for me. Y'all should listen to Jailbreak, the Cowboy Song, and the Boys are Back in town from the album Jailbreak. All of them are excellent.
Been waiting for this. Awesome video. Thin Lizzy was such an underrated band. Everyone listens to their popular songs on the radio, but their real gems were the rest of the albums
Maybe the best Thin Lizzy's stuff choice, in my opinion.
They started and continued as a pub/glam rock band, but like other names from that music scene, sometimes their songs show the heavy metal influences or schooling, like this one: you can hear the typical weaving guitar chords which many (new wave of british) heavy metal bands used to play some years later.
Phil Lynott, the bassist and lead singer, also collaborated with some punk rock and new wave bands, like Sex Pistols, Damned and Boomtown Rats.
All the Thin Lizzy songs on Live and Dangerous are better than the studio versions including Emerald.
FACTS
Thin Lizzy created the blueprint for metal genres like British NWoHM and thrash. This is what Steve Harris and James Hetfield listened to in their bedrooms as kids. Maiden, Priest, and Metallica would not exist without TL.
For me TL are legends who created amazing sounds that still make my hair stand on end. But their songwriting was comparatively weak and unfortunately the memory of Lynott and Moore is fading...
Agree with your general point, but I'm not sure about including Judas Priest in that group; they were doing similar stuff on Sad Wings of Destiny in '76, the same year as Jailbreak (the album), and there's less of this kind of playing on TL's earlier albums.
The band is from Ireland. The lead singer is Irish/Afro-Carib. His mother is from Ireland & his father is from the West Indies.
I think their biggest songs in the US were Whiskey in the Jar, the Boys Are Back in Town, & Jailbreak
Best Irish rock band .
Should have went with Jailbreak.
boring
@@joddeurter2448 I mean, not my top choice either but for introductions it'd probably have gripped these guys a bit stronger than the album closer.
Omg Thin Lizzy!! Finally!💚💚
Cowboy Song is a must listen.
Thin Lizzy was writing and playing 80s rock in the 70s. Seriously. If Phil Lynot hadn't passed away, they would have huuge in the 80s. Changes in recording equipment and techniques in the 80s would have worked so well with their style. They had the sound, just not the equipment and new methods of studio work. Phil's voice was commanding as it was, but with 80s vocal enhancements , multitracking and layering, wow.
I'm a little disappointed that you didn't care for it. Emerald is my favorite by Thin Lizzy. Check out Cowboy Song, Chinatown, Jail Break, The Boys are Back in Town and Cold Sweat.
Definitely Cowboy Song!
Luke Robertson my favorite too but maybe not the best place to START listening to Thin Lizzy, if you never heard of them before.
Cowboy Song
Jailbreak
The Boys Are Back in Town
All would have been better introductions to Lizzy.
My opinion only.
Was Emerald the first song you heard by Thin Lizzy?
I would be surprised.
So whoever suggested starting there on Emerald?
Not the best place for guys who have never even heard of the band before.
Or...did you actually hear Emerald first, then the rest of their big hits?
Corrosion of Conformity - Clean My Wounds (strong Thin Lizzy influence), Vote with a Bullet or Albatross
Fan of this band but never heard this before. Please do one of the popular songs, these guys are legends.
LOL... i've never even heard this one myself BUT Whiskey in the Jar (metallica did a remake of this one), Jailbreak, The Boys are back in town and Romeo and the Lonely Girl... yeah.. that's good stuff !! Really enjoying your videos !! Thank you for sharing !!
Thin Lizzy - Boys are back in town
I'd be shocked if they hadn't heard that, even if they don't realise it.
They really should start with this one it's by far their most popular song.
@@HiDefHDMusic Exactly
I would say the next Thin Lizzy reaction should be The Boys Are Back In Town or Jailbreak.
These should have been the first ones for them to listen to. How can anybody not like The Boys Are Back In Town or Jailbreak?
The Life Double Live was the 1st time I ever heard thin Lizzy, when it came out. I was hooked and still am. One of my top 5 favorite bands of all times.
Appreciate ur honesty guys!!!
Respect that ur real n honest about it..
Personally I LOVE this song...
But yeah cheers
Not the first song when people think of Thin Lizzy, but a good jumping on point.
probably just picked it because mastodon covered it
Hey guys the thing with Thin Lizzy is that they were never as popular in the states as the were everywhere else in the world. But as far as I'm concerned one of the greatest rock bands ever.
Listen to the live version of Emerald from Live and Dangerous it'll blow you away as well as Warrior Are you Ready and Shalalalala. Another one you should try is Black Rose.
Long live Thin Lizzy long live Phil Lynott.
They were for a short stint but it was because of the song "Boys are back in town". They should have been more massive here. This whole album is ATOMIC FIRE!!!!
Thin lizzy was the best....saw them live with queen.... They blew queen away...Phil was just awesome.... The seventies was the best decade for rock....
Thin Lizzy were (mostly) from my home town of Dublin, Ireland.
More Lizzy:
- Boys are back in town
- Jailbreak
- Don’t Believe A Word
- Rosalie (Live)
- Still In Love With You (live)
- Waiting For An Alibi
- Dancing In The Moonlight
They were from Ireland, Phil Lynott (R.I.P) was the singer
Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing
Was scrolling through while quarantining. Was hoping you guys would find the live version of "Massacre." The drumming on it is crazy!
Formed in Dublin, Ireland in late 60's....Bad Reputation, Jailbreak, Cowboy Song, Boys are Back in Town.....those are GREAT!!!!
If you want to appreciate this song properly listen to the version off "live and dangerous".... also try "black rose" for further lizzy listening
‘Strongly agree’ with both recommendations!
YES - ROUNDABOUT!!! YES - ROUNDABOUT!!! YES - ROUNDABOUT!!! YES - ROUNDABOUT!!! YES - ROUNDABOUT!!! YES - ROUNDABOUT!!!
Love it! Paul Gilbert does a great cover of it, too.
PLEASE... AGAIN.
They MUST react to that.
Yea... if you want a great bass line, that's the song.
Thin Lizzy is an Irish band, the song is about the Scots (down from the Glen) coming to try to claim the "Emerald" (Ireland). Thin Lizzy is a band that definitely shines the brightest on the stage - so, if you feel like giving a second listen to this song please do so with the live version from the live album "Live and Dangerous"....it is a completely different experience. You will definitely hear the best version of that song through the live rendition
Awesome you finally did thin lizzy!!! Pure rock n roll. Gotta do waiting for an alibi.
