It's Irish mythology, culture even. Chuculainn was a mighty Celtic warrior. Rosin Dubh was a codename for Ireland when writing poems about Irish cuture was outlawed. It's very cool for me, an Irishman seeing you listen to stuff I grew up on!

Hey Van! Thanks for the shout out! The story behind the song is the lead singer Phil Lynott's love for Irish music, legends and poetry. In Roisin Dubh he combined them all together. The name Roisin Dubh was ancient name for Ireland and translates to Black Rose. The "black" was the British oppression over Ireland, the "rose." Phil Lynott became fondly known as Ireland's Black Rose. Before his death, he was cast to play Jimi Hendrix in a biopic which would have skyrocketed Thin Lizzy. We still love him though and there's even a memorial day for him every year in Dublin!

Actually Wild Mountain Thyme is a Scottish/Irish song.
The lyrics and melody are a variant of the song "The Braes Of Balquhither" by Scottish poet Robert Tannahill (1774-1810), and Scottish composer Robert Archibald Smith (1780-1829), but were adapted by Belfast musician Francis McPeake (1885-1971) into "Wild Mountain Thyme" and first recorded by his family in the 1950s.

Wow! Great to see a black family from the other side of the world discovering an old band from Ireland. The song is about ancient Irish Mythology. It tells the story of Cu Chulainn who was a famous Mythological Warrior, and makes reference to Roisin Dubh which is the Irish language expression for Black Rose. The song also touches on several other Irish tropes such as the Mourne Mountains, the Irish Famine, the county of Tipperary, the famous soccer player George Best, amongst other things. Interesting to note, the bassist and lead singer Phil Lynott was himself a black man. In any event, as an Irish gut, this was a pleasant surprise to watch. Good job!

However, at the time he sang this it was a representation of Ancient Irish history and Irish peoples oppression by English rule for hundreds of years. It is a song reminding Irish people to remember their proud history where once we had our own Kings and Queens before oppression.

Roisin Dubh translates to Black Rose. Black rose also refers to dark Rosaleen which was the name for Ireland back in the days when England ruled Ireland. I wish people would speak in their native language and refer to Ireland as Róisín dubh so the English could not understand what they were talking about. He also sings about Cu Cullain a hero of Irish mythology. The Queen he mentions is Queen Maeve also from Irish mythology. Towards the end of the song you hear him name check many Irish poets. Much of the instrumentation is based around Irish traditional reels so your assumption about it sounding Irish is correct.

Another fantastic tune by Thin Lizzy talking about Irish history is Emerald. They were total pioneers, for Irish bands in the global music scene, for rock bands with black members and lead singers, and for heavy metal. Iron Maiden sound like Thin Lizzy, not the other way around - Thin Lizzy began earlier. That's Phil Lynott's genius, the black Dubliner who founded the band, played the bass, invented the sound, wrote most of the songs and sang with such an irreplaceable voice.

Van and LFR Fam, greetings from Ireland. This song takes bits and pieces from various ancient Irish myths and legends ( Cuchullain, Queen Maeve, , and also borrows (steals) liberally from traditional Irish music (Shenandoah, Will you Go Lassie Go, Danny Boy and the Mason’s Apron). You should check out more Lizzy - Phil Lynott was a born rockstar and natural badass. Jailbreak, The Boys are Back in Town, Bad Reputation, The Rocker, Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed, Don’t Believe a Word, Waiting on an Alibi, the live version of Still in Love with You, Holy War, Cold Sweat, Hollywood ( Down on Your Luck). Awh, there's so much Irish culture in this song... Phil Lynott was one of the only black people in Ireland at the time. Black Rose (Roisín Dubh) is a pseudonym for Ireland under English rule (it's how poets referred to Ireland), but it's also a metaphor for Lynott who was black. The song contains multiple musical tributes to Irish traditional music and Irish artists throughout. And of course references to Irish mythology (Cuchulainn and An Táin). It's so cool that an American family is listening to this in 2021. Hello from Dublin. I recommend checking out all of Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy's work. They're legends.

Cú Chulainn is a central figure in Irish mythology. he started life as Setanta and on a journey. was attacked by the Chieftains favourite hunting Wolfhound. He took the slitha (Similar to a baseball,) from his pocket and hitting it with his hurley he drove the ball down the throat of the dog killing it. The chieftain was livid and to make up for it. Setanta promised to take the place of the dog and so became Cu Chulainn. in English, Hound of Cullen. It was the start of an amazing set of Myths and legends which see Cu Chulainn become the greatest of warriors. as wise as he was strong.
Check it out. it's great stuff.

Finally people reacting to my favorite Thin Lizzy song!! Thank you guys!! The guitarists here are Gary Moore and Scott Gorham and when the latter one first heard Gary playing his reaction was "uh oh i think i'm in trouble here, don't know if i can catch up with this guy!" When the tempo goes up you only hear one guitar and it's Gary Moore.

I like how towards the end phil adds in a little flare from the past talking about his breakout hit whiskey in the jar also he talks about the western world which i'd assume is a take on the early album vegabonds of the western world from beginning to end he was a very thoughtful man when it came to the music some many good ideas and overall like ability he was very multifaceted i liked your sons take on it being an anthem because i thought that it sounded like one as well great family you guys have there cheers and if you haven't checked out the nightlife album, fighting album, or jailbreak definitely give those ones a listen the music is timeless we need more artists like phil in this world today to bring everyone together cheers guy!

This musical style is Irish traditional folk music based. but with a bang obviously. Thin Lizzy were for a while a traditional folk band. this is reflected in a lot of their Rock work. 'Whiskey in the Jar'. for example. I would suggest that up until the death of Phil Lynott, they were easily a bigger band than Iron Maiden and sold a lot of vinyl. they didn't reach their full potential.

A ton of bands were inspired by Thin lizzy, one notable band was Metallica. I suggest you listen to some of their most famous songs. The Boys are back in town, Cowboy Song, and Whiskey in the Jarro. I hope you do, these are bangers.

You should also check out a band called Black Star Riders. They began touring as Thin Lizzy [part 2] but went on to become BSR, founded by one of the early members of Thin Lizzy.
