Understanding Lumetri Color:
Before we get hands-on, we need to understand Lumetri Color a little bit. It's an amazing tool within Premiere Pro that lets you adjust the color and tone of your footage. To access it, head over to the 'Color' tab in your workspace, or in your effects panel simply search for Lumetri Color to apply it to your clips.
Importing & Organizing Clips:
Next let’s talk about importing, and organizing clips. Make sure you've imported your footage into Premiere Pro and organized it in the project panel. Now we can Drag our desired clip into the timeline for editing.
Basic Correction:
To begin we’re going to start with a basic correction. Select your clip, head to Lumetri Color, and open the 'Basic Correction' tab. Here, you can adjust Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, Whites, and Blacks. These controls allow you to fix exposure issues and balance the overall look of your clip. Experiment until you achieve the desired result. I’m going to use this clip here. You’ll notice, that it’s by default a very flat looking image straight from the camera. That’s because I shot it as LOG footage, which gives me more Dynamic Range, or “Control” over my colour grades.
Creative Looks (LUTs):
Want to add a specific mood or style to your footage? Lumetri Color has got you covered with Creative Looks or LUTs which stands for (Look Up Tables). In the 'Creative' tab, you'll find a list of pre-made looks. Try out different LUTs to find the perfect one for your video. You can see I already have a bunch of LUTs already installed here, but also make sure to check out the link in my BIO to grab my custom HOLLYWOOD LUT Pack now, for less than 50 cents a LUT.
Color Wheels & Match:
The Color Wheels & Match feature lets you fine-tune the color balance of your footage. In the 'Color Wheels' tab, you'll see three wheels for Shadows, Midtones, and Highlights, as well as a colour spectrum for each. Play around with these to enhance the colors of specific areas in your clip.
The 'Match' feature can be a real time-saver when you want to match the color grading of different clips in your project. Simply select comparison view, then locate your reference clip with the secondary timeline, and hit apply match.
Curves & HSL Secondary:
For more advanced adjustments, check out the 'Curves' and 'HSL Secondary' tabs. Curves allow you to control color and contrast with precise curves. ‘We can Even isolate specific colours, and increase or decrease them based on multiple parameters like, saturation, hue, and luma. HSL Secondary' enables you to isolate and adjust specific colors in your footage as well.
Vignette & Effects:
To add some artistic flair, use the 'Vignette' tab to create a vignette effect, drawing focus to the center of the frame. Additionally, Lumetri Color offers a variety of other effects like sharpening, noise reduction, and more to enhance the overall quality of your video.
Keyframing & Adjustment Layers:
Remember, you can keyframe any parameter in Lumetri Color to change over time by simply hitting the stopwatch icon, and setting keyframes parameters. And if you want to apply the same color grading settings to multiple clips, use adjustment layers. This saves time and maintains consistency throughout your project.
Final Touches:
Once you're satisfied with your color grade, take a moment to review your video and make any necessary tweaks. Remember, it's all about experimentation and finding the perfect look for your specific project. A Specific Colour Grade can entirely change the look and feel of your footage.
