Hi Premiere Gal, we are good students of your tutorial. Just one thing after getting skin tones, focus, good prime lens, good exposure, and shooting flat profile with beautiful color and grading.... we are wondering, Dear Gal, how to achieve an image hat looks like H.E.R in this example video? Any help please? Very clear, smooth, looks photoshopped... kind of video you know, See Smile ua-cam.com/video/4oseK1D6ru0/v-deo.html

You have become my GO-TO for how to do things with Premier Pro as I continue to learn and grow my skills as I capture video and edit it into projects for our church's online worship services. Your tutorials are clear, expertly explained, and illustrated so well with your step-by-step examples. Thank you so much for helping my videos to look SO much better.

2020 is the year I started my editing journey. I've been in the film industry for over 30 years when all of my work went completely away because of the pandemic.... I taught myself to edit that year which led me to more work than I know what to do with. My editing & filming are still a bit elementary, but I am committed to bringing my clients a better product. All of this is thanks to you and others who graciously share your knowledge & expertise. Your style is easy to follow and I can't thank you enough for sharing.
I can't wait to learn more from You.

Kelsey, simply awesome stuff! I have been using Canon Log for many years and I always use the Canon Lut as an add on adjustment layer. I had no idea you could use the Curve to bring the exposure back to where it's needed. This to me is so much cleaner because sometimes if I over or underexpose the LUT is neutral in its settings so it doesn't correct for my over/under. The Luma Waveform scope getting as close to 100 and 0 will fix just about all exposures (assuming you don't totally goof it up). So now, I just saved a ton of time by not needing that adjustment layer and all the post production movement they require when I am in my editing mode for alignment (sound) of multiple camera clips. I also wanted to say that I would have used your neck or arm skin to do the skin color adjustment (assuming you may have been wearing just a small amount of maybelline foundation) to avoid any coloring confusion for the scope. That way, you are getting clear skin tones. I never thought to pull in some of the tones that were slightly off center using that Hue vs Hue technique. That was dope! Thanks for the reminder to spend more time in advance to get the white balance in camera versus post. It makes a huge difference and I have two assistants that often fail to keep up with the white balance like I do so I am spending so much time editing their video content for better white balance. I will try to do a better job of teaching them and reminding them to set it each time the lighting changes! You do a fine job of presenting solid learning lessons. Thank you and keep it coming!

I really dug this video, Gal. I never thought it necessary to shoot log and do the color grading, but you've sold me on the idea. Now I just need a camera that shoots log. I see that you're using the Canon R and I've heard mixed reviews about it. Would love to get your take on it and what you might recommend. Thank you again for another helpful video!

    • @PremiereGal

Overall, the EOS R is a great camera. It does everything I need, it doesn’t have high frame rates like the Sony A7S series but if you like Canon color and the UI, it’s a solid one.

@@PremiereGal Appreciate the feedback. My channel is almost exclusively in-studio talking head and I honestly couldn't imagine having to go to high frame rate. I'm not invested in Canon but I don't see a reason not to get one. Thanks for your response and great work!

very nice info, I have learned the hard way the importance, since I often use multiple cameras in single shootings, custom white balance all cameras. After all the lights are in position and on, I put a large white card near subject and zoom in to fill screen with white, then do custom white balance on each camera. it is nearly impossible to match all the cameras in post without this step.
    best to you all

Great vid Kelsey! I've watched almost a dozen of your tutorials in the last week or so and have learned at least one new thing in each of them! I didn't know what lumetri scopes was until this video and now I've got to do a deep dive to learn more! I was also today years old when I learned from you to shoot in Log mode, which if I understand correctly, is kind of like shooting RAW but for video! Great explanations all around! Cheers!

Hey Kelsey, nice tutorial - very clear & detailed! I have a question though. While using the mask to isolate the skin is great for reading the scopes, wouldn't the colour adjustments made end up actually affecting the entire picture though, as we saw with your lips? In which case, would it not be better to use the colour picker tool in the HSL tab to physically select the skin only and therefore any further colour adjustments would only affect the skin?

Going from log to rec 709 I would typically use a utility LUT specific to the camera being used as there's often more happening when to going from log to 709 than just exposure levels, there are often color transforms too. But this grade still looks good anyway. Lot of ways to grill tofu I guess.
