this man is a fighter and a visionary man about life and young poeple problems. in 1981 on a live TV show he stood up to the French president Mitterrand in legendary anger, telling him that the youth are in despair, that despair is mobilizing that it generates tragedies by the violence of young people gangs who have nothing more to lose. Mitterrand is a very great orator with a lot of repartee and that day he did not know what to say. and balavoine was totally right and had foreseen what would happen many years later

One of his most beautiful songs by the lyrics.
"Le chanteur" is in that way musically, but more intensive by this character who wants be adored by his fans, this singer who starts his career and who want to drink the cup of celebrity to the dregs. Who wants to end up alone and poor and hated by all after having experienced all the vices, to be going to the very bottom of what one could go, after having wallowed in the mire of lust. Because he wants to be unhappy enough not to want to live anymore and to leave this life without regrets.
It's a song again of rare intensity, with also a construction which goes crescendo until the end of the song.

    My son, my fight

It's been a long time since you been gone now
I listen to you tear my life apart, crying
If I had known that one morning I would be there, dirty, judged on a bench
By the shadow of a body that I have held so often
    For a child
You tell them that my job is nothing
That we don't know what I'll be in a year
If they knew that for you before, of all the singers I was the greatest
And that's why you wanted a child
    Became big
    Judges and Laws
It doesn't scare me, it's my son, my battle
She shouldn't go, ho ho ho
Oh I'm going to break everything if you touch
To the fruit of my womb
    She shouldn't have gone
Of course she was the one who wore it and yet, ho ho
It's me who builds his life slowly
All she can say about me
Is nothing compared to the smile he gives me
Absence has wrongs that nothing defends
    This is my child
    Judges and Laws
It doesn't scare me, it's my son, my battle
She shouldn't go, ho ho ho
Oh I'm going to break everything if you touch
To the fruit of my womb
She shouldn't go, ho ho ho
    Judges and Laws
    It doesn't scare me

If I remember correctly, he sang about one of his friend who broke with his wives and his friend was scared of less seeing their children because generally, especially at this time, it was essentially the mother who keep the children.
So he said that even if he's the father he know how to elevate his children and the fact that if he loose his children, he would "break everything" because his children are very important to him.

Hi Dereck. Thanks for your react on DANIEL BALAVOINE and not BALOVOINE! 😉😆This song is about divorce, of a father who fights and struggles for custody of his child, despite the legal risks that this terrible event can cause within a family.
It isn't a personal story, but that of his entourage as for his friend guitarist Colin Swimburne who had just separated from his wife after having confided in Daniel who was touched by his story.
By chance, the same year the film Kramer Contre Kramer (Kramer VS KRAMER) was released at the cinema, which precisely evokes this social theme that wasn't very widespread at the time, less mentioned in the media which has become commonplace today.
The song was a HUGE SUCCESS in France, taken from his album "Un Autre Monde" (Another World) in 1980 as a first single, ranked no.2 in the charts (not TOP 50 at the time) and sold more than 500'000 copies.
Do you know a VIDEO exists for this song, I'm not sure if it's the original clip but I remember this one, Daniel Balavoine with a child on the beach :
    M/V link : ua-cam.com/video/oLkjD87NcDk/v-deo.html
For your NEXT REACT, please take a best choice, more catchy (not sleepy) than this single like Dieu Que C'Est Beau (1984) or Aimer Est Plus Fort Que D'Etre Aimé (1985) and more "new wave" sound like Pour La Femme Veuve Qui S'Eveille (ForThe Widowed Woman Who Wakes Up) in 1983, an experimental and interesting song for you, pinned link down below.

Hi Derek! Love your reviews of french songs. It's cool to had an insight of a non-french speaker and especially those by the great Daniel Balavoine. Just for the story of that particular song, it was inspired by the Kramer vs. Kramer movie, starting Dustin Hoffman and Merryl Streep! Apparently, Balavoine and his guitarist of the time went to the theatre to saw that movie, not knowing that his guitarist friend lived that situation with is ex-wife. Balavoine wasn't a father at the time but he put himself in that role and the result is a song of great humanity and that's why Daniel Balavoine is a kind of special singer to me. There's no others like him and he is greatly missed, not just in France but in Quebec too, where I come from. Continue your good work, Derek!

As a young listener to old french classics (well, you reacted to a lot a french songs so now you're kinda an expert!) , I have to say you really captured the spirit of it all, and that artist in particular. As a French myself, I've never been really into french music, but there are a few untouchable ones IMHO : Daniel Balavoine, Michel Berger, Serge Gainsbourg, Jean-Jacques Goldman, Laurent Voulzy, Alain Souchon... That song you reacted too is so powerful and painful at the same time, yet very melodic...

Pour ceux qui ne comprennent pas le texte, c'est l'histoire d'une séparation et de la bataille, au tribunal, pour la garde de son fils.
Pensez au film "Kramer contre Kramer".
For those who do not understand the text, it is the story of a separation and the battle, in court, for the custody of his son.
Think of the movie "Kramer vs. Kramer".

once is not customary, the source is of excellent quality! There are other songs with high audio quality, directly prefer these ones.
Even if you get used to the sounds of the French language quite a bit. Listening to such powerful vocal artists requires listening as comfortably as possible.
I imagine this comment is superfluous, but frankly I always insist on the quality of the source.
Thank you dereck for your reactions, but especially for your very refreshing analyzes.

His two best performances were "quand on arrive en ville" (when we just come downtown) and "le chanteur" (the singer) with an absolutely magnificient end if you like vocals.
"Quand on arrive en ville" is from Starmania, a musical comedy, is the song that made Balavoine to be known and "le chanteur" the song that definitely put him at the top of french singers by far.
By the way "the taller" lol was pretty funny. le plus grand = the best
