Hello folks. French citizen here. This movie is one of our masterpieces. It's poetry & so much warmth & a crazy good soundtrack. It's humanity in a nutshell & one of those pick me up movies. 💙
I adore French dark comedies, ``Brand new testament`` and ``Delicatessen``.
@@petergarayt9634 This is not dark comedy, Delicatessen is; this movie is the sixtine chapel of the french and perhaps the world's movie universe. It makes you so embedded into the plot that you really want to be on those places witnessing them on real time...
I agree, what about the The Diving Bell and the Butterfly? That is another great piece.

It is a love story about introverts, sure. But it's also a story about how those small acts of kindness actually change lives. Such a beautiful movie. One of my all time favourites.
Just a little love letter to life really, regardless of your life.

So true. And so sad that there are so little movies made, that don't just follow the same "play it safe"-formula, and instead dare to be unique, creative, doing it's own thing.
I'm sure there are a lot talented writers and directors out there with great original stories and ideas how to tell a story in a fresh way. But they either don't take the risk, or there's just no studio/company that is willing to invest money in such movies.
I worked as a projectionist when this film was shown in cinemas in Russia. The film is incredible and I have never seen anything like it before - at the end of every screening people stood up and applauded.
The soundtrack for this movie is amazing. Yann Tiersen is a master.
I watch a lot of French movies and sadly, the soundtracks are usually eh..not to my liking. But THIS one! Fabulous!
Pure cinema. The scene with the old blind man always moves me to tears.
I saw this with my girlfriend when it first came out in theaters. We walked out in tears with huge smiles. Neither of us could stop talking about it for days. Such a magical film, and I love your reactions!

This movie is for dreamers, lovers, and schemers, one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.
Also she doesn’t have a heart condition, she was so touch starved from her parents, her heart skipped a beat from any intimacy.

The color of every shot is amazing to this day. I don't think what they accomplished in camera has an equal. They weren't relying on digital color correction to do this, so the attention to color palette in set design, costuming, locations, etc. is just bananas. Truly a masterpiece.
It was a box office and critical success, making $174 million dollars against a $10 million dollar budget.
It was nominated for 5 Oscars including Best Foreign Language Film

One of my favorite movies ever. Sweet, charming and unique. Audrey Tautou is so wonderful in this.
Frenchman here. Glad people outside of France get to know this absolute masterpiece. The story, the 'Jean-Pierre Jeunet grain', Yann Tiersen's music, the humour too, everything in this movie is so heartwarming, full of poetry, what the world lacks today. It will remain my favorite movie for ages ♥♥♥
It's an international Box office hit. A small movie that somehow, became known across the world
This film was such a formative experience for me. As a young dreamer myself back then, I felt seen and understood. I feel true happiness whenever I re-watch it.
I love that you caught how the audio in the background changes when the letter is read out loud, due to Amélie cutting and pasting different letter parts together.
Not many have caught that, reacting to this absolute gem of a movie.
As i'm watching this I'm glancing up to the lovely Japanese poster of Amelie I've had on my wall since 2001. Perfect film. Cheers guys.

When I first saw Amelie, I left the cinema so inspired.
Back when you could still call a payphone, I'd answer them all the time. Usually it's someone who was supposed to meet someone but they're running late. "Is there a guy there in a red jacket? If his name's Bob let me talk to him!" Don't be afraid of telephones. 🙂

I'm glad you enjoyed the movie, as a native French speaker I was raised on the French cinema of the 40's and 50's and didn't really like the kind of movies that came after but there has been gems and Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulin is one of them.
This film didn't create the traveling gnome concept but made it popular enough that Travelocity uses it in their ads.
A great foreign movie i watched was - The Lives of Others.
It is based on how peoples lives were interrupted and often ruined by the Stasi, the secret police of East Germany in the 1980s. One of the Stasi however has compassion.

I like Jean-Pierre Jeunet as a director. His first film "Delicatessen" still holds up.
Watch 'La cité des enfants perdus' too, another masterpiece from Jeunet ;-)
Sam was actually right in the sense that there was a Broadway musical not so long ago based on the film. Now to see the dark, dystopian sci-fi/fantasy side of the director, Jean Pierrre Juenet, watch "The City of Lost Children" with, of all people, Ron Perlman. While "Amélie" was shot on location in bright colors, TCoLC is all shot in a sound stage with amazing sets.
Or Delicatessen, which is my favourite Juenet/Caro movie
@@simianinc - Delicatessen is definitely great, too, it's just 3rd for me out of their first 3 films. I just missed the chance to see it in a theatre and was bummed that I couldn't make it.
A Very Long Engagement is another great film by Jean-Pierre Jeunet starring Audrey Tautou.

Thank you for watching this film! I saw Amélie in the cinema multiple times, and it remains one of my most cherished movie-going experiences. It's a magical film that makes you feel happy to be alive.
The actor that plays Lucien I will always remember from the second Asterix and Obelix movie which was always my favourite. It is a long shot but it will be cool to see someone react to it.
That one's my favourite, too! I do hope I get to see it again "for the first time" here on UA-cam.

There are other french movies that I highly recommend you guys :
- The spanish appartment (french title "l'auberge espagnole") : a feel good movie about a french student in economy going to Barcelona for his studies, and find an appartment shared with an english woman, spanish woman, danish guy, italian guy, german guy. It's a clash of culture that is so funny to watch and uplifting, they are all so adorable in it. And Audrey Tautou plays in it too!
- The green beautiful (french title "La belle verte") : a movie about an extra-terrestrial visiting earth to find out where our evolution is. Very smart and funny movie!
- Auntie Danielle (french title "Tatie Danielle") : a very acid comedy about an old bitter woman gently taken care of by her nephew after the death of her housekeeper. They are kind-hearted naive people who discover that her auntie isn't as nice as she pretend to be, and she will make their life a nightmare. Pure gold!
one of my top 10 movies ever of all times. fucking master piece.
I love this film. The directors have two other films that you should see. Both are incredibly quirky and yet, all three are different. Amelie is a love story, Delicatessen is a quirky horror/dystopian film, and City of Lost Children is a quirky, twisted fairy tale. Check them out! Also, you'll notice that many actors are in all three films.
Micmacs by the same director is also worth a watch.

This was Audrey Tautou's breakout roll. I remember watching it when IFC showed actual independent films and art house movies like this one. A few years later she starred with Tom Hanks in The DaVinci Code.
I always loved this movie from the first time I took a chance and watched it in the theater and then bought the DVD, and the actress that plays her is stunning.
“She’s in the middle, yet she’s outside” 💜 I love this movie SO much!!! I’m sorry you had such trouble with editing but I’m thrilled you stuck with it and that Samantha really enjoyed it! (Also unrelated but Samantha’s hair is absolutely incredible, dang!)

I find that about 80% of the time I don't like these critical darling films so I usually never watch them or put them off for a long time. This I watched while I was stuck at home during the pandemic and kind of hate myself for not watching it earlier. It's such a fun and crazy ride that you can't help but get sucked in. Cheers.

I just love this movie. Romcoms are usually not at all my cup of tea, as they are so often so predictable and cheesy. But Amelie is so much more, unique and creative - both regarding the story-telling as well as the cinematography - and just a lovely movie, that seamlessly jump from comedic to serious to crazy moments.
I love this movie. Just plain love it.

Honestly one of my favourite films, I've watched it at least once a year for the last fifteen years at least, and absolutely always notice little details I hadn't before. It's so whimsical, creative and sweet but also so clever, to keep it interesting and unpredictable. Definitely one to re-watch!

Way back, I bought the DVD box set of this wonderful film.
Along with the disc, the set included a small photo album that had postcards of key scenes from the film, a wine aerator (it is French after all), and a little skipping stone!
Probably the most unique box set I’ve seen.

I go to Paris several times a year. Each trip HAS to include a crème brûlée, and as I crack the sugar I think of Amélie.
You should check out Delicatessen - just as strange, but darker and funny - with many of the same cast. Amélie director Jean-Pierre Jeunet co-directed it with Marc Caro.

One of the greatest movies ever made.
I stayed in Paris as a student for a few months when this came out. It was a huge event and everyone was talking about it.
If you get a chance to watch another Audrey Tautou movie, Happenstance is good choice. Came out a year before Amelie. Tells 2 parallel stories of what could've happened and how random things can mean so much. Tautou has that same charm she has in this one. Thanks for reacting!

One of my all-time favorite movies, top 10 for sure, rewatched many times. Took me a few watches to realize that one of the key lines of the whole movie is "times are hard for dreamers"; arguably it's almost the movie's thesis. But then dreaming is the reward, and makes life sweeter and brighter.

One of my very favorites
This was one of a whole slew of great films I saw in the theater my senior year of high school. It only played for one weekend and I was the only person there to watch it that day, but I'm glad I did.
I'm glad you chose to react to this. It's so charming and inventive. The gnome thing is referenced in Up in the Air, which was nominated for 6 Oscars and I've never seen anyone react to that. I hope you do one day because it is so darkly funny.
"Long dimanche de fiançailles" also from JP Jeunet and with Audrey Tautou it's not so good, but has a very similar vibe, kind of more sad in certain moments, but it's worth watching it.
Same movie maker than "a very long engagement". Jean Pierre Geunet.
Same actress + Marion Cotillard, few same actors, very deep emotional movie mixing history's horrors, French old culture, and love at its purest form. Same "multi-side stories" style.
A must watch either, Geunet's touch.

2 favorite bits: The whole Gnome thing, of course... and when young Amélie is unplugging the antenna cable -- but in particular, the fact that she's listening to the radio to know when to do it for maximum effect! That was truly inspired! ;-]

My favorite movie of all time. I had the privilege to splice a 35mm copy together for a retrospective screening at my former job at an arthouse theater. I missed the opportunity to see it in theaters in its initial run, so it was great to get another chance
Hi, I'm french not even spanish but you guys would love some movies from the great Pedro Almodovar. All about my mother (Todo sobre mi madre) is one of his bests, and really my favorite from him. This movie is a tour de force of acting, writing and can move you in ways you don't expect, you have to watch this one some day!
I've seen this movie multiple times and yet, somehow, I never got until it was pointed out in the reaction that the quote Amelie graffitied onto the wall at the end was from the cafe regular's own book.
My eldest daughter was studying abroad in Paris when this charming movie came out and highly recommended I see it. I'm glad I did. Amelie is an inventive, cinematic extrapolation of Jane Austin's "Emma" with Paris co-starring as the backdrop. If you enjoyed Amelie, another Emma-esque movie made in the 90's to react to is called "Cold Comfort Farm". It stars a Kate Beckinsdale, early in her career, matchmaking lots of amazing normal/eccentric characters while stumbling upon love herself.

The Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, TX, where I used to live, would run a special showing of it for Valentine's Day. The ticket price included a creme brulee, so you could crack the sugar crust along with her.

Magical, mysterious, a touch of genius and Audrey Tautou is so gamin and beautiful and French....and Paris looks wonderful....and the restaraunt is there in Montmatre...

As a French Canadian let me help you with the pronunciation of "Amelie". The "A" is not pronounced "aw" but just a plain "a' like the "a" in Arizona. Hope you enjoyed the movie, it`s one of my favourites. It reminds somewhat of Forest Gump in its style but much more quirkier.
Love Amelie! This director did a few other whimsical movies after this that didn't quite live up to Amelie. However, he collaborated with another co-director on two movies before this Called "Delicatessen" and "City of Lost Children." Both are great, City is a little bit better known, but I prefer delicatessen, it's a little more whimsical and romantic. Not quite as much as Amelie. I definitely recommend it! there will be a few actors from Amelie that you might recognize.
