Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at a jaw dropping performance of Serge Lama for the first time on Dereck Reacts with "Je Suis Malade." This is without question the most rawest performances of this song, I've seen. There is something here that Lama is able to do like no other. Lama becomes the sick, he becomes the character. Devastated, I don't know how I pulled through. See it now!

Serge Lama wrote these lyrics and his very friend Alice Dona wrote the music.
He's telling HIS story.
He was married and met a woman (also married) he deeply felt in love with.
To preserve their both families, she left to Morocco... that's when Lama wrote the song that came from a discussion he was having with Dona telling how bad he was feeling and said "I just feel really like being sick".
The story has a happy ending as they eventually both got divorced (and have lived together ever since for more than 45 years (until Michèle passerd away in 2016)
Merci! 💖
« Tu m’as privé de tous mes chants
Tu m’as vidé de tous mes mots »
You can't imagine the pleasure you gave me when you said "absolutely the best version". Serge Lama and Alice Dona deserve to be remembered as the real creators of this fabulous song.
Totally agree. And it's justice to say that. it's HIS story,. Dalida and Lara Fabian did a great job, but Lama has shown himself "nu" (nude, in a metaphoric way of meaning) in front of everyone ! Absolutely emotionally incredibly brilliant !
Totally agree, tears come to my eyes every time I hear his version. I love the Dalida version too, but cannot stand the Lara Fabian’s version.
This is really the best version. Lara fabia added a lot of drama into it but this was effortless and pure and thus the best.
You're right Dereck.. this song is belongs to him. Lara Fabian covered it perfectly, that was magic, obviously, but people have to know that there'been someone before her. Thanks a lot for having played the original version 🙂
He was the first to sing it: it was written by him and composed for him, with lyrics based on his own heartbreak. He was really living it, feeling it, going through it all, body and soul.
Merci.
Serge Lama is very intense, never heard anyone else like that. Many of his songs are like that and my mother loved him so i know that. He's awesome.
This song has some of the best lyrics in history. Absolutely heart-wrenching.
Serge Lama is still alive. His version is the original one and by far the best one .it is autobiographical that s why it is so realistic. He wrote the lyrics too
Hello, I am extremely happy that you are playing the original version of "Je suis malade". Which is basically a song and describes how a man feels. In the 1970s men had more qualms about expressing how they felt "a man doesn't cry". Serge Lama put words on what a man can feel. The copies as beautiful as they are sung by women as fabulous as they are do not allow to put the same emotional intensity. Served by a superb vocal organ, the original surpasses the other versions for my taste.
Thank you for Serge.
My dad’s favorite singer. This man is so talented.
Dereck I absolutely love your musical journey around the world. I absolutely agree with you, I love all the version, but Serge Lama brings a real truth to the song. Thought it's a close one on all the version, but that live performance is absolute gold.
Wow Entirely surprised by this reaction that we no longer expected. Magnificent indeed, it's artistically more straightforward but rich for a sung experience with this dilemma between the artist at work and the human being torn inside by what he sings. It's so emotionally rich!
Thanks, friend. You do a great job. I wish Serge could see this reaction. Sure, he'll appreciate and be happy.
He was the one! He was going through it!
What a memory this song brings back to me! When Serge Lama released it, I went to see him live and the recorded version is nothing compared to the live version. He was unusually powerful for a singer who is not lyrical and unusually expressive. It must be said that his father was an opera singer and he was raised in Bel Canto. I have always been an absolute fan of Serge Lama and I have enormous respect for him. Thank you to him for giving us so much happiness....
This song is a hell to sing ! You have tears in your throat and you must keep your voice !
you're right on that emotion. he is the original singer of this song. the GREAT Serge Lama made the best version
Totally agree, this is the best version.
" yé soui malade" lol it always fun to heard foreigner trying to speak french, and "cute"!
One of the best french songs ever
The most realistic and authentic!
I agree: This is the best version!
The guy (Serge Lama) actually wrote the song after a break-up. It might not have the vocal intricacies of Lara's version, but it is very heartfelt (he is telling his own story).
He's telling his partner how sick / unhappy in their on-off relationship he is. But when in later choruses he nearly shouts "C'est ça, je suis malade!", it sounds to me like he's answering her (maybe they're arguing and she accused him of "being sick / having a problem"): his "I'm sick, that's it / that's right" sounds all the more heartbreaking then.
P.s.: Serge Lama is still alive (born 1943); but having recently received an award for his whole career, he announced on stage he was retiring due to poor health.
He actually wrote from hie personnal expérience. I deeply advise you to watch : " l enfant d un autre " from Lama also. Will blow both soul, mind and heart for sure.
"Le père pour l'enfant, c'est celui qui caresse sa mère et qui lui tend les bras" à pleurer...
The song is overwhelming.
There is a song which could interest you Dereck, it is the one which inspired Dimash's interpretation of Grégory Lemarchal "S.O.S d'un terrien en détresse".
When you have a heart and you love people in general and when you see them cry, you cry yourself. Dereck you made me cry
Actually Serge Lama wrote the song, and ge really went through this. Passion is a desease guys, love is not supposed to hurts that much. 💘
This is the original version. It tells the true story of Serge Lama who went through a heartache. The woman whom he loved at that time was married, he was married too. She left him to work abroad and at the same time save her couple with her husband but she changed her mind few years later. Serge and her got married, had a son and stayed together until her death in 2016.
You know, some songs need no words, no comments. This version is one of them.
You truly have caught the emotion of this song, these deep lyrics when performed the good way, they are unstoppable and must touch any human's heart and mind.
This is so beautiful, and Serge sounds a lot like Jaques Brel. He sings with passion too.
Welcome to my world Dereck ! Brel, Ferré, Lama, Aznavour and other of this caliber. I am old but so happy to have been part of these generations 60 - 70- 80. God bless you.
An even better version (emotional) is a "duet" he made with Dalida, as she was already dead, they mixed an rachive of her, and he sang "with her" it was for a french tv show, very very veryyy emotionnal.
Really ? I never seen this cover

You know, Derek, as a teacher who tries to teach high school Kids that songs have a message to spread, no matter what language you speak, you are the living proof that music and lyrics are some kind of international language. Keep listening to classic songs, whether they are French or English - you seem sensitive enough to get them!
I don't think there is a "better" version of it, I like all of them, Fabian, Dalida, Lama are great in their own way.
What a beautiful song, what a wonderful singer! This song was written by Alice Dona for Serge Lama ;) The melody is absolutely crazy emotional
He was the one going through this.
A friend Alice Dona wrote the music and he said the lyrics poured out of his mind in less that 30 minutes as he was haunted bye this.
Dear Dereck, at last you discover this, his, forever his, own and greatest performance, thank you.
Hello Dereck, you really don't need a translation for this song.I see that just like you Dereck. So many different feelings in Serge's voice. You can hear and feel it,the despair, the love, fainting, pain.Where is the Horizon?,where is the sun?where is the moon?Oh my god i'm in tears!!!!Thank you Dereck for your Emotions for your reaction💝💝🐬
I think you are absolutely right when saying it's on a more personal level with a male singer (and what a singer!).
Great reaction!
Such a powerful performance, thank you for your raw reaction Dereck. I also recommend you check out "Marie La Polonaise". Another wonderful song by Serge Lama.
I think (in 95% case) you can't top the original song writer/composer when they wrote a song for themself, because it's their lives, experiences, words
Original and best version is Serge Lama, for sure (though I love Lara Fabian version too). 👍🏻
Serge lama IS so cool
Yeah ! "Sergeou"... You should try "Souvenirs attention danger", "d'aventures en aventures"...
Very great reaction Dereck. As usual, Iam not disapointed at all. This itnerpretation from Lama is a pure gem, because it's truth, it's HIS own story. He did this interpretation because the song (he had written) was his Life at this righht moment. Nothing equals an emotional song when the rendition is the harsh truth shown simply but completely. you're right, he was ALL-IN and it wasn't bluff !
Immense Serge Lama 🎉
hi, im french ans this is the original version. Serge lama
best version, period.
Serge Lama is the original singer of this song and also the lyrics writer.Musix is from Alice Dona.
Yes ! I was waiting for you to react to the original version ! I absolutely love Serge Lama and he has so many gems for you to discover. I sure hope you'll do more reactions of his songs.
Thanks a million. So poignant rendition! Don't know if I had seen this live performance on the French TV at that time (never miss variety shows), but today it's as if I discovered it. Love hugely the mesmerizing orchestral accompaniment.
The difference is that Lara Fabian sings a song, Serge lama tells his life....
Well ... He WROTE the song.
Ah! Thanks! The OG, at least! Dalidas and Fabians are amazing but, as you suggest, this one is more rough, legit, reliable even... Nice!
I agree. The lyrics are made for a man with a deep voice.
Que dire de plus ! Lama is the best 👍👍👍👍👍
8:50, Don't kill Serge Lama, he's still alive. :) As others said before, this is his story. Every word he wrote here has a real, deep meaning for him... So I guess no matter how talented the other singers are, it's quite difficult to be as emotional as the one who actually lived the lyrics and poured his own soul inside them. I don't think you can sing it better that he did himself just for that reason. :)
Yes. 100% agree.
Straight from the 💛
Merci Dereck
Une autre merveille de Serge ...:
''La chanteuse a 20 ans'''
One evening, out of curiosity, I came across Lara Fabian's version. Not being a fan of the singer, I took a nasty slap. I place her performance at the same level as J. Brel and "Amsterdam".
The version of Dalida convinced me less (sorry for the fans).
The difference here is that S.Lama is naked in each interpretation. It is very brief, but just before he sings we guess as a hesitation, he fights against himself to sing this title there. Normal he is devastated inside.
The emotion even makes his voice tremble sometimes.
He will confess later that each time he had to sing this title, it was for him a truly exhausting ordeal.
Here we have no interpretation, just S.Lama and his sadness. It is in that that it is touching.
I also draw attention to the verse where he talks about his despair when his mother went out at night ...... S.Lama did not know the maternal love, his mother had no affection for him, no love. He places this trauma on the same level as his story of impossible love. That is to say the pain .....
La version Dalida est plus touchante
Dereck merci
sublime :
'La Chanteuse a 20 ans''
''Les ballons rouges
'Marie la polonaise'
'le temps de la rangaine' etc..
Check out Louise attaque'' ton invitation ', or other song in this album
Lindo!! Adoro.
t'was on heavy rotation when it came out and for a decade or two after that. To the ears of a kid though this was a fun song to sing while simulating death. Gilbert Becausd and Charles Aznavour also have intense songs, take "La Mamma" and say "the one about Pouchkin what was that, the name of the Russian minder Nathalie. Which is in some ways similar to Elton John's song Nikita.
And now the Korean group Forestella also have their version, beautiful, although they use the feminine version of the lyrics (Lara’s version). But nobody sang it like Serge Lama who created it, for his lover…
this is the original song, singer and writter
Raw emotions!!
Oh thanks so much 😍😍 my favorite song .. kisses from Paris
This is the first time I see a reaction to the original, Dalida was another first coming from you thank you!!
That's the original wirter.
oh yeah ! and yes he lived it, he's not playing. not only it's the original version but Reality versus acting... no comparaison possible.
Beautiful, passionate. More please!
You can listen the Daniel Levi's version too. An other man voice but very différente.
Other famous deep song from Serge Lama: les ballons rouges
Its original ❤
Great react as Alway
Premier version.Merveilleuse interprétation. 😀🇫🇷
Like what you are doing with French modern artists even though you may have no formal training in French or little but you have enough vocabulary to convey a wide range of emotions enhanced by a background in music.
I would like to suggest Serge Reggiani, another big name in French song, of the same calibre as Charles Aznavour, Jacques Brel, Barbara, Edith Piaf, Serge Lama, Michel Polnareff, Michel Delpech, Gilles Dreu, Hugues Aufray, Pierre Perret, Antoine, Christophe, Nino Ferrer and many more between the 1960s and 1980s. Julie Pietri, Rose Laurens, Fabienne Thibeault, Nicole Croisille, Francis Cabrel, Yves Duteil, Mireille Matthieu, Michelle Torr, Marie Laforêt, Michel Jonasz, Gilbert Bécaud, Claude-Michel Schönberg. Can't list them all up. Only a great bunch of artists!
Please react to Others Song of Serge lama . He is a genious
Hi Dereck. Check out Adriano Celentano ''i want to know''....80's italian pearl.
Thanks you.
To me, too, Serge Lama is the one for this song, like Juliette Gréco is the one for “Déshabillez-moi”…
It's original Serge Lama❤
