  • After the visit from the Homestead consultant Kerry Brown, we have been on a deep dive learning how to better plan to be more successful in our off grid journey. Bio-Diversity is something we have been interested in implementing on our homestead following more of a permaculture way of doing things. In an effort to cut down on predator bugs in our garden, we decided to build a DIY Garden pond in the center of Off Grid Garden. The hope is to invite more dragonflies and birds to where we grow our food. Wanting to get a head start on preparing our food forest, we planted the entire outer perimeter with elderberry. We are both feeling very confident in our ability to grow our own food. Follow along on our homesteading journey.

I live in the woods of Tennessee, off grid, started 1995, collecting free bldg. materials, 2003 started building 3200 Sq ft concrete slab, 10 ft concrete walls, backed into hillside, overlooking game reserve.
6 family members living here, food canned, vacuumed packed barrels corn, rice, wheat berries, pinto, white, black beans, pasta, oat meal, sugar salt, powered milk, raw honey etc.
Take 55 gal barrel w lid. Drill hole for valve stem, silicone pull it through hole, fill barrel, caulk lid, put snap ring, let set, vacuum air out, wallah. I have 35 barrels. 8 freezers vacuumed meat, fish chicken etc using food saver. Prepped for economic collaps😮e.

Get chickes, 5, use mobil coup, move it around throughout year, on your garden, natural airation, compost, super garden food.

Mow leaves into fine pieces, put in compost pit, add green leaves layered, and kitchen trimmings.
Have tree service deliver wood chips, let set, 3 yrs you have black compost. I got 30 free loads, add to soil.
Your trees live off dead trees, limbs, and leaves, occasional animal poo.

    PLAN NOW FOR FIRE WOOD
MY 5 TANKS ARE ELEVATED TO GUTTER LEVEL, WITH T SHIRT FILTERS , will drain into both bathrooms, no pump, as well as washing machine.
We had a well cavein 2 yrs ago, used up rain water, took barrels on trailer 1 mile to spring fed creek, pumped full, transferred by pump to elevated tanks, made 3 trips.
I elevated 2 ea. 55 gal barrels in both bathrooms, plumbed together, ran pvc to top of toilet tanks w valve. To flush we removed top from t. Tank to fill tank.
The well drillers took 6 months to get to drill out our 340 ft well.
I had multiple fire wood stackes, prepped, i had huge pots, i heated water for baths, washing clothes, dishes. I kept pots full and fire going through autumn, winter, spring.
    Made multiple trips to creek.
    Great experience.
We hooked a 13,000 kva weatinghouse generator to meter base using quick disconnect, runs on propane or gas. We cook with propane grill tank. I have pre prepped tanks, 20, from yard sales, we refill half mile to small country store, 17.00 bucks to refill.

i love elderberry, rasberry and blackberry bushes cause they make a nice perimeter deterrant w all the thorns and they can give you cuttings(per say) to spread around easily and people love them as gifts too

You should also get a net that goes over the pond. My brother has netting over his pond and its a game changer. Keeps lots of debris out, and his fish are much safer. The pond looks great! You did a great job Sean and Jess.

A beautiful pond build. The water sprinkler is awesome, has a huge spout to it. The plants you are distributing will make a huge difference in the future. Am interested in the water machine you showed, could be a game changer. Also the new closet looks go good, stores you clothes, gives you a little more room and just looks so nice. Can't wait until growing season for all plants.

Need to put wire cages around your fruit trees 1- to keep deer from eating the leaves and fruits off of them and 2- keeps you from weeding eating (wacker)
them down or running over them with the lawnmower/ tractor.

I beat 60 eggs in bowl, add salt for preservation, put in small freezer bags. Whole egg s harden the yoke, not runny, so I scramble.
Date the zip lock bags rotate

I thought the pond looked a bit like a keyhole. Something you could do if you wanted to is setup an Aquaponics system nearby to help feed plants while cleaning the water and then on the return have that water be for your waterfall.

    • @OffGridGrowing
      @OffGridGrowing  5 місяців тому +1

Now that would be a really cool system to put together.. Definitely down the line but I think doable

lol i hate ikea stuff too. i do yardsaling which the wife loves but i look for old dressers, chairs tables etc. buy a stripping kit at lowes and you end up with some beautiful real wood furniture at a fraction of the price versus new for solid wood stuff. couches are nice too cause u can refinish the wood and have them reupholstered for fairly cheap

During winter u were cold, have large pot of water on stove, put hot water in water bottles, put 6 under blankets, add cold water to pot, for round 2.
Remember snow removal, hot rocks, bottles.
PLAN 6 MONTHS AHEAD BRO. ASK FOR ADVICE.
