  • In this 1 hour special we share with you our off grid life Raw and Unfiltered. Our homesteading journey has been everything except rainbows and unicorns and we have had to deal with conditions most people would consider harsh. Living off the grid is hard work especially when you are building a homestead from scratch. From extremes in weather with very little reprieve, oppressive bug pressure, run-ins with dangerous snakes, and many failures that came from our own inexperience. This week was a very different story with many accomplishments from upgrades to our Solar System, The start of building a new Rain Water Collection System, Planting in both our Organic Gardens and Food Forrest and the arrival of a new truck that will make our life off grid that much easier. With every successive week both Jes and I learn more about what it takes to live a self sustainable lifestyle and tackle each challenge set before us. We are looking forward to seeing everyone tonight and as always Remember to

    2 types of strawberries to think about. Ever bearing and June bearing. Ever bearing produce for 3 seasons ( more speed out for munching on) and June bearing produce a large batch all at once ( good for preservation... freezing, canning and so on).

    Yur Fine Brother , Ya got the Walls braced with diagonals , now to do the Roof, you put Diagonals under the rafters. Thats called Racking the Roof. When me n Pops built garages we put a underside diagonal at every corner , About Just scab on 2 , .. 8 foot 2x4s. Just like you did on the walls. 4 of them if you really want it solid. Then the tin roof Tin will add a lot of shear too. Easy peasy.. Yur a Builder. Another tip is to slice the 5 gallon buckets down the side, use bailing wire to hold them shut and put the small side up. After the cement hardens , undo the bailing wire and unwrap the busket.. Voila. Perfect forms everytime.... Congrats on the Truck Woohoo.. Prayers answered!🙏🙏🙏 Swails will be awesome on that Slope . Weedy , of the WeedyGarden did swails in Australia, hes got an aweso e garden on a slope. Be blessed you 2👍👍😁😁🙏🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸

    The weed fabric is a great idea! Consider removing the remaining weeds that are under the fabric before you finish planting. The weed fabric will be even more effective with a cleaner slate. It should be pretty easy to do after that fresh rain you had. I weed after a fresh rain, and weed as I water my plants to make this rather tedious task easier. Have you also looked into sheet mulching with cardboard?

    • @OffGridGrowing

    Just remember when you stack your firewood if it's wet firewood it has to dry first before you put it in your shed because if you stack it in your shed wet it gets moldy and starts growing fungi on it so when you first cut in summer just stack it in a straight line in the bush let it sit out all summer then put it in the woodshed before winter that way it's all dry burns nice doesn't stink like moldy firewood And in my dirt floor woodsheds I just used pallets put the wood on as a floor so the air could go underneath the firewood worked excellent And I have built all my outgoing sheds with sheds and shops out of blogs lasted for a good 20 years without painting them without torching them just sticking them in the ground no concrete nothing and they're just finally starting to rot but they're still standing The one would shed is a three baywood shed the middle roof is a bottom of an ohm fiberglass boat that I had to cut apart to get rid of because it was too big so I used the bottom for the roof and the side ones are slant off the main one is just 10 old use 10 from my dad's house years ago And no nails no screws And all the logs for for free because I used to cut firewood for quite a few years and we just cut the yellow cedar logs fill up the truck box with just logs

    A god way to prevent weeds is using cardboard with mulch on top, over time it breaks down and feeds the soil, it helps retain moisture as well as it helps prevent hard packed soil from sun beating down on it.

    Buy the largest roll of reflectix insulation that you can afford. Cover skylight inside with safety pins and cover as much of windows area as you can. You can even lay it on you floor like a rug. Cool air drops. I built a tiny home from a shed last year and used this until I could properly insulate. It helped alot.

    First time watching your channel. Regarding the ant situation, use Borax soap on their ant lines and around their hills/holes. It works and won't harm any other animals. I use it here in the high desert in Arizona, we have lots of red ants/fire ants and it works on them as they take it back to their homes and eat it. It may take a couple of weeks but you will notice that there aren't too many running around after that. Good work on your place. Take care.

    i love your building a rain roof and that your also creating a duel purpose for storing firewood . once step closer to a functioning home hey.
    love the swale idea thats awesome , well snakes are a blessing even though their dangerous too they keep pests at bay so they play their part it also means you have healthy bushlands or they wouldnt be there , in time they will get to know you and know your habits and stay clear from you.
    so happy for you.
    and for your bugs get some bug repellant like what we have in Australia called Aerogard it works a treat . and for round the face hang corks from string round your hat. the movement of the corks keeps the bugs away well most of them .

      @@OffGridGrowing you deserve it guys its you who have been making this happen and you that made the choice to be truly free, im just passing on what i have learned myself mainly from youtube videos and what i have learned as a kid as mum and dad grew all our fruit and vegies in our quarter acre block back yard and we had chickens too we fed 7 of us from that yard . and filled 2 tucker box freezers every year , everything from apples oranges limes lemons passion fruit carrots capsicum peas beans lettuce cabbage tomato garlic, potatoes our own ginger beer my dad made , and home brew beer.
      and mum made marmalade and jams . mum made our clothes from the flour bags she bought as she made our bread from scratch and and we bought meat and brown sugar never white sugar , and we ate like kings . and we all had our part to play mine was chickens raking their pen every day and mixing it with ash from the burn bin i burnt every week of junk mail and sensitive mail to be disposed of that was our fertiliser. there is a phrase in the movie Lucy, "humanities finest achievement is pass on its knowledge "

During the day keep them closed to block out the sun. I know you can't screw anything into the dome itself. But maybe take some closet rods, screw them onto some 2x4s secured to your floor. Or even clothes racks and do the same thing with those. I know those only go so high but just some ideas that the two of you can tweek into something that works. I love going two weeks between videos if they result in an awesome hr long video.

    ❤I heard that if you take original dawn dish detergent mixed with water and pour it with continuous flow into ant hill opening it will fix it. It also works for ground wasps. Also I am a little concerned that you put your wood supply so far from where you live. If you have to get more wood from there in bad weather it could be hard and dangerous. Also you may have to make multiple trips.😂

    Also I think copperheads are often in pairs. So be careful even if you kill it. Also after you cut the head off it can still bite due to how the nervous system works. Oh did you ask that guy how deep and wide that berth for the food forest should be? Also what should be planted in the berths to prevent soil erosion? Maybe you can plant stuff to attract honey bees and plants that trap and kill mosquitos and flies. Also ask him how many of each specific species you decide on, for instance do you need 3 crab apple trees and three golden delicious apples for pollination reasons? How many nitrogen fixing plants do you need per how many fruit/ nut trees? Perhaps it was a illusion due to filming but it seemed like he said to make the berth and swale in the same direction water flows in for instance the berths would be horizontal Teresa like instead of vertical like the water would flow! That was a confusing!

    I guess I just don't understand why you couldn't just run a hose from your current water storage (IBC by the shed) down to the dome and get water pressure, but I don't know the drop in elevation so that might be the issue. However it would still be a good way to get water down to the dome for a second water tank fill up without another rain catching system near the dome area. Just an idea that was running through my head and thought I'd share it.

    • @OffGridGrowing
      @OffGridGrowing  4 місяці тому

      Well we needed a place to store our firewood for next winter so why not collect off the roof anyway 😁.. I could use the other tank as a secondary fill up

    • @StonerSmurfin
      @StonerSmurfin 4 місяці тому +1

      @@OffGridGrowing I agree, there's no such thing as to much water storage when living off grid. I was just thinking about water pressure from elevation ( which is hard to show on video,as I'm sure you know)

    • @OffGridGrowing
      @OffGridGrowing  4 місяці тому +1

      I might need to get a pressure vessel because at its elevation I think I'll only get about 9psi

    I always say the older the vehicle is the better it is because you can fix it by yourself don't have to take it in and pay thousands of dollars to get someone to work on it and a lot of the older trucks you can fix them out in the bush easy they break down very good make dodge they used to have very interchangeable parts in between the Dodgers and the Chevys forge do not interchange very good I worked in a wreckers for 9 years and Grew up all my life working on mini bikes motorbikes then cars rebuilt my own truck and top to bottom and only would work on Chevy's Dodgers Toyotas the vehicles that didn't work on were Fords volkswagen and Volvo's being that I was the shop Forman I gave all the other vehicles to the other mechanics in the shop and I used to run around with the Big Bull Moose Forklift balancing cutters on them running them to the Crusher Pile it was fun till you ran the forks through the windows to lift them up on the crusher pile and you come eye to eye to a big wasp nests inside on the roof then you drop it really fast and take off🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣It's just too bad that it's not a 4 wheel drive but a truck is good

    Yes watch those eyeballs when you happen to look at the weld you don't want to get the welders eye when you wake up in the morning your eyes are sealed shut from all the puss coming out of your eyeballs and the itch like crazy trust me you've had it before welded many years learn the rights and the wrongs from welding learning on your own just go out and buy your own welder buzz box or mig meg you have to be very clean work to make a clean weld plus a very steady hand buzz box will do a lot heavier steel because you can go higher on temperatures you have to know what sticks to use don't ever use 118 rod that's what you call a farmer's rod you know the welds that are all spotty and messy I like 170 rod it's an old purpose all angle rod welds nice and smooth doesn't stick if you want a flat welding rod go to a 100 rod very easy to weld with nice flat wide weld one thing about having your own shop and welding a lot you end up with a lot of scrap metal around that you don't want to throw away and you save for the next project cause you might need it and then when it comes time that you don't do it you have to haul it all the way to the scrap yard and in Canada bc you don't get nothing for it and the United States you get paid for it go figure a
