It doesn't look very deep? What kind of wildlife would you expect to find in it?
@@maggiewright1781 Hi Maggie, it's deep (enough!) in the middle for toads and frogs tend to use shallow water for breeding, but there would be newts, dragonflies, damselflies and of course all the creatures that need insects or any mosquito larvae, such as larger insects, birds, amphibians and bats - they certainly take care of any likely mosquitoes :) Best wishes, Joel
In India, you do not have to do much to make a pond, all you need is one heavy rain, the rest is made by itself !! 🙃🙃
Haha! India has such natural beauty, we seem to have destroyed so much of ours in the UK, but hopefully people are gardening now with nature in mind rather than against it - thank you so much for your comment, appreciated :)
@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton ❤️❤️
In the Philippines too!😅😂
Now, thats what im going to do. Dig a little and wait for the heavy rain from June to Dec! Rain will make it deep enough.😁😁

Must be really great to have such workable soil to start with! I think they built my home on a rock quarry!
It is Linda :) But we're not always so lucky - although quarry stones already on site would save a lot of haulage and cost ;) Best wishes, Joel

You and me both! Digging the foundation for my back garden extension was impossible for a mini digger. We had to constantly break up the stones with a jackhammer because the digger couldn't pull them up. It took 6 hours instead of 2. 😵
We have 1 foot of workable soil. It's awful.
All soils are workable im a kid and i did my pond thsts 4 metter long 2 metter wide and 1.2metter deep in a soil that my dad said it is too hard to do a pond in
I work as a landscaper. Currently a week off due to a bad shoulder. Yet I am watching landscaping videos. Good sign that i love my job.

Thank you so much - so sorry for the delay in replying to you, so many comments :) But when you have space for a pond you might find this YT series that I did helpful - it shows how to make the above pond in detail and applies to all sizes

Buy cheap land on a swamp, and dig a big gouge out of the middle, bottom-most part of your land. It will drain a lot of the swampy area into a pond-like area instead. Or wait until one of the trees in the swamp falls over, and it should look like a natural pond. Just dig it out more and you'll have a pond next to a fallen over tree's root ball. Likely already shaded because it is in a swamp with tall trees.
I buried a Rubbermaid tub in my garden, lined it with an old shower curtain, threw in some potted umbrella plants and a small pump, and lined the edges with rocks found on the property. The only maintenance I've given it is an occasional cleaning of the pump. It's in its 10th year and has outlasted a heavy plastic pond insert I bought at Lowe's! I live in North Florida.😎
Wow, that's pretty long-lived - well done :) Best wishes to you and yours in N Florida - Joel

@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton yep definitely: I decided to take more of an interest in my garden so watched all the episodes of Garden Rescue for ideas, eventually swayed by your other channel, The Butterfly Brothers, to go for wild-life. I let my grass and the weeds grow last year and was amazed by how much better it looked without me doing a thing. Next step is to experiment with multiple single seating areas connected by a small path, water placed somewhere, and adding my own plants in those areas where the weeds thrived. The fun part, which I didn't realize to start with, is that I get to experiment with the garden every year.

Quick Question -- what do you do to prevent mosquitos? Would adding a small pump to keep the water moving help?
Hi Eleanor - thank you. The bats, birds, amphibians and larger insects (like dragonflies etc) will all feast on mosquitoes and their larvae. Also, re adding a pump, the native oxygenating plants, the floating leaved plants and low-nutrient subsoil used all keep the water aerated and clear :) There is a 3 part series on the channel showing in real-time how I made this pond and why the methods are used. Thank you Adnan, it's the positive comments that make a difference to me, negative ones make no difference at all :) I think people want ponds for fish, I do like fish but they are not good for ponds made for nature and wildlife and it means a lot of filtration that is not natural, the oxygenating plants make a huge difference to clarity and health - if you are interested, you can see some other ponds I have done that are established in the short video here:
ua-cam.com/video/jG1w7MUhhXs/v-deo.html
@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton Although I love fish, I completely agree with you. Common fish people choose for ponds like Koi and Goldfish produce a lot of waste.
@@zaki_1337 Absolutely! There are many many ornamental ponds in the world now, and although they are beautiful, they remove a lot of habitat for creatures in need - we have lost over 500,000 natural ponds in the UK over the last 100 years - that's 5000 ponds per year, all that habitat lost for many creatures - I hope we all start to make a difference, how ever small :) Good to talk to you Adnan, thank you - best wishes, Joel
I like it so much.
Great work Joel. I love watching landscaping videos like this. Keep it up ✅
Hey! Thank you - that means a lot, welcome to the channel, there are lots of videos there showing before and after landscaping works and I'm currently trying to edit and upload another pond, showing the "after" and all the wildlife that visits, hoping it will upload this evening - wish me luck! Best wishes, Joel
@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton Awesome! I just subscribed and turned on notifications so I’ll be sure to check it out 💪
@@formcheck5553 Really grateful, the pain of editing just eased a bit with your comment there ;) Thanks so much

Thank you so much. I make lots of these habitats and they’re so good for wildlife of all kinds 😊👍
It's very peaceful 😌..
Thank you, so much :) I wish I could have stayed to film it once the plants had established after a few weeks, but I am returning to it this year for an update. You might like to see this short video of a few of the many ponds I've created this way and how they look after a few weeks:

My back just from looking at this
🤣🤣 I think I still feel it to be honest!
I love that digging bar with the blade end. I hand dug a pond on my property a few years back where the ground was clay with rocks embedded in it. Nice for the final pond, which did not need a liner, but it means every scoop I dug out had to be fought for with a pick, and some angles were not easy to swing a pick at. I did have a digging bar but the flat end is less than 2 inches wide and it made for slow going. As a side note, if you have clay soil it does make for a very natural pond, but with no liner size limits you may end up thinking "just a little deeper, just a little wider, just another hour of digging today" and that's how the my plan of a three foot deep goldfish pond got a little out of hand and now I have an eight foot deep pond with a bass and some trout living in it.
In my country you don't need to build a pond
You can find natural ponds everywhere!
Even on the middle of the highway street!
Wow, natural ponds are always best :)

I would just like to take a minute to say this pond is absolutely AMAZING and you did a great job on it, and i would just like to say you are very very talented!
Thank you, that means a lot to me - I know there are a lot of negative comments but I think people expect these ponds to be for fish or koi in particular, but they are for nature above all and this method has worked without fail for over 15 years now - I really appreciate you taking the time, it makes all the difference :) Best wishes to you, Joel
Very cool, wish I had a backyard like that... perhaps one day ✌️👍
The neighbors watching: 👁👄👁
Yes! This happens a lot ;)
wow, when you first dig in it, the soils open and thats a good soil
It sure is
Dump a quart of motor oil in it!!!
Beautiful and Just Amazing.. Thanks thanks a lot for sharing and giving such ideas..

I’m buying you a wheelbarrow 😂. Loved your video thanks for sharing!
Haha! Thank you - I do have about 4 already but this client's job meant that I had to use buckets due to steep steps at the rear behind the gate - thanks for leaving such a nice comment - best wishes to you, Joel
I love it so beautiful ill do this in my backyard soon
Hi there :) This is so good to hear, I don't know if you have seen already but there are 3 instructional videos on the channel here that show how this pond is constructed, and the reason for the methods - it might be helpful to you. Thank you so much.
Beautiful job. Somebody gift this guy a wheel borough though lol
LOL - thank you. We do have about 8 wheelbarrows on the firm, but the steep steps at the rear of this client's garden meant none could be used - hence the buckets :/ I felt fitter afterwards ;)
I am thinking about making this for my parents thanks for this bid😀
Brilliant - that's great to hear - there is a 3 part series on the channel here for making this particular pond - so you won't have to try to keep up with the timelapse! ;) Best wishes, Joel
