- Ryobi came out with their own lower cost copy of the Franklin 710, but they sacrificed performance while doing so.

I recommend the Franklin T6 instead: amzn.to/2y4Id0p

You there, STOP. If you're about to tell me this can be used with one hand, you are wrong.
Check your model number, you have the ESF5001. So many people complained about the two handed operation of the ESF5000 that Ryobi made changes to the design. They really should have done a better job differentiating between the two, with an minor tweak in the cosmetic appearance so the change in model numbers was more obvious. I suppose it was cheaper to keep the exterior the same though.

You win.

Second review I've seen the same thing. You'd think the reviewers would read the directions first before commenting. When the center ring lights up means you're in the middle of the stud.
Oh shit I found the one handed operation one. I’m gonna give it a try. Can always return. Thanks again
Hahaha... I wrote a comment calling you out, then read your comment, and then deleted my comment 😉 Yep, you got me too.
Thank you also for the extra info on the magnet!
Don’t calibrate it over a stud, he says. If i knew where the studs were so i could avoid them, I probably wouldn’t need the stud finder 🤦🏼♀️
Haha, not my instructions, they're Ryobi's! I highly recommend the Franklin T6 in the same price range, which doesn't require calibration. I reviewed it here: ua-cam.com/video/3-TbedAsGuc/v-deo.html
luckily when I hung pictures in the room I remember that I didn't hit any studs for any of them, so I just took the frame down and calibrated it there
Wish I would have watched this before I bought this a couple years ago. This thing has always been problematic for me but i finally got fed up with it tonight and smashed it after 6 missed holes hanging a shelf. Came across your video looking for a different one to buy. Lol
watching you find the studs, I'm realizing the finder only lights center when it's directly over the stud, the rest of the time it's telling you what direction the stud is in, not necessarily where it's located. Seems fairly accurate when you are center to it.
It might work ok like that, but why bother with seven LEDs then? They could accomplish the same thing with a "centered" indicator and one directional LED on either side. One of the big issues I had with it is they copied the appearance of the Franklin, without offering the same capabilities - it felt deceptive to me.
cool review it's nice to see your not being biased and giving your honest opinion on the tool
Thanks, Mark!
Thank you for this review. I'm glad I'm not the only one it's inconsistent with. Very frustrating turning hardwood floors & drywall into swiss cheese after a few consistent holes here & there.
I've had much better results with Franklin stud finders. I reviewed their similarly priced T6 model here: ua-cam.com/video/3-TbedAsGuc/v-deo.html
Thanks for another very helpful review.
I also love that you kept the Hitachi miter saw all this time; penny for penny and pound for pound, they are the best.
Glad it was helpful!
Yeah, that's the Hitachi C12FDH - it's been a really solid miter saw, especially since I picked it up new for $200 with a free brad nailer and 5" sander around 6-7 years ago. My one complaint is the fine bevel adjustment gears broke about 2 years back, but the saw is still completely functional without them.
So i can see by the comments of people downing this product including the reviewer. Not trying to hurt anyone's feelings however; you folks apparently do not know how to use tools. I found this device incredible easy to use and extremely accurate. if you can handle the two buttons then you are not coordinated enough to do the job anyway.
I'm glad yours works for you, but I definitely know how to use a stud finder. Given the bimodal split of the reviews on the HD website, I'll concede it's possible that Ryobi had really horrible quality control on this product. Either that, or it works well for some wall types, but not others. However, it doesn't get much simpler than the test wall I have in the video, and you can clearly see the stud finder having all sorts of trouble.
As for the two buttons, which would you rather use - a stud finder that ties up both hands, or one that operates one handed, given all other factors equal? I'm not going to make excuses for a stupid design by telling people to suck it up and become more coordinated. Plus, the other stud finder I used in the video is half the price of the ESF5000, performs on the same level, and can be used one handed.
Thank you so much for the magnet trick!
There's also a specific zone on the Ryobi stud finder that you are not supposed to have your finger in or it will throw off the reader.
Whew. I just bought one and thought I was just a moron because it kept lighting up in places there weren’t any studs. Thanks for showing me thats not the case!
Thanks for this video.
I think I'm just going to buy a few of those little magnets to find the studs to mount my flatscreen TV bracket.
I was all set to buy a $50 or $60 Franklin stud finder.
You just saved me some money!
Glad I could help. I use the Franklin T6 myself, which usually goes for $25-30. I reviewed it here: ua-cam.com/video/3-TbedAsGuc/v-deo.html
The two button to activate is deal breaker. Thanks for the review.
I wish I had watched this video before making this purchase. I needed this stud finder to hand something from the ceiling and it has been less then helpful in finding the studs
I'd return it and get the Franklin T6 instead. I reviewed that one here: ua-cam.com/video/3-TbedAsGuc/v-deo.html
Is possible to detect location of electrical wires in walls or must be free space like in video? How deep is possible to detect?
Yes, it works through drywall too - I just demonstrated it outside the wall so it was visible. It detected around 3-4" deep, which should be enough for most any wall, unless a wire is just jammed up against the other side. Even then, if you're only cutting 1/2"-1" deep into the drywall, it shouldn't be an issue.
wow, ryobi either knocks it outta the park or fails miserably and on this they failed in the worst way.
Exactly. They just hit a home run with the One+ glue gun, but struck out with this one.
First time you did it it was centered but you kept moving it after that ...
Have extensive remodeling experience, I bought one and returned it, it doesn't work
Have owned one for about 6 months - add paint and wall texture and the Ryobi can't find any studs. Mine is going to Goodwill. I guess I'll stick with my $9 Stanley
I recommend the Franklin T6 for around the same price. It's my go-to stud finder - I reviewed it here: ua-cam.com/video/3-TbedAsGuc/v-deo.html
Mine can be used with one hand. I have model ESF5001ID. says you can in the instruction booklet.
Read my pinned comment.
Actually the instruction do say "Press and hole one or both on/off buttons..." #2

One button or two I do agree, it does not work very well, guess that happens! Thanks for your info!
I just bought a Ryobi, I so wish I had seen this video before I bought one. Since I know nothing about stud finders, I think I’ll resort to the old method, holes in the walls (over wall paneling). Wasted $32, it goes to goodwill.
I've been using the Franklin T6 for about 4 years, it's pretty awesome for finding studs behind drywall: amzn.to/3jZ0qXv

Anyone know why all the lights keep blinking after calibrating?
I don't think I ever encountered that issue. Have you tried calibrating on more than one location, just in case the first try was over a stud and the detector got "confused."
I checked the manual, and it also states that the lights will flash 5X before calibration if the batteries are running low, or if you take your finger off one power button to mark a stud center and move the stud finder prior to depressing both buttons again, it will flash at you until you recalibrate. Ryobi's manual here: manuals.ryobitools.com/system/files/9865/original/ESF5000_925_StudFinder_trilingual_03.pdf?2017
The packing sticker tells you u can use it one OR two handed.
Read my pinned comment.
You didn't move it accross the wall enough, it needs to scan the area to work it out
Some stud finders work like that, but this one does not. Go read the manual's operating instructions, it only calls for moving the stud finder so its center lines up with the stud: manuals.ryobitools.com/system/files/9865/original/ESF5000_925_StudFinder_trilingual_03.pdf?2017
You don't have to hold down both buttons. You can pick either one = one handed use.
Wrong. Read my pinned comment.
the choise is, the pro sensor 710 the most exact stud finder
You need to go left and right more equally you started to the left then it lights up but you need to pass it completely and then go back it will be more accurate that way it needs to get the full scope of things try it again my way and then give your opinion
Unfortunately I got rid of mine so I can't give it a try. However, the manual makes no mention of having to go past a stud and then come back - something you'd think Ryobi would have mentioned if it improved performance. The unit doesn't recalibrate on the fly - just when it's initially placed against the wall.
Doresoom Reviews I now most of them suck but they are intended to find say one stud and the you measure over for the following stud they don't work well when you keep pushing the buttons like I said if you go to one edge and then just pass the other and bring it back it should give you dead center this method has work for my without issue also if you see how long the light span is that unit can measure larger timbers and find center that's why going past the other side is important sorry for my long rambling I am a ryobi fan and enjoy your input on there tools
Hey, if it works it works. Maybe there was a disconnect between the engineering department and the tech manual writer. I'll pin this in case it helps someone get more accuracy out of theirs.
I don’t have to hit both power buttons maybe they made a new one
They updated it. You have the ESF5001 version.
Yea but it doesn’t tell the difference between aluminum stud and wood and that helpful if u need to use different screws since my house has a mixture or wood and aluminum steal or what ever it is studs
Thanks. Just saved me thirty buck. 👍
good review thanks you
I bought one, I am having the same problems. Thank you for your post. I thought I got a bad one. I can see that it is just not accurate.
If you're still looking for an alternative, I highly recommend the Franklin T6. I reviewed it here: ua-cam.com/video/3-TbedAsGuc/v-deo.html
The only reliable way to find the studs in your wall is to invite Clark Kent over for a cup of coffee.
If you really hate the two buttons, just wire one in to be always on ;)
Ha, that's a pretty good idea. You'd have to check and make sure both buttons are closing the same circuit together though, otherwise it would drain the battery if they can draw current independently.
Says right on back, hold One or Both buttons
Read my pinned comment, they changed the design.
You can press one button and it’ll work
No, you have to ESF5001 that allows one handed operation. This one I reviewed is the ESF5000 which does not. They look identical - Ryobi realized their initial design was such a turd that they needed to change it.
I just bought a new stud finder. Forget this thing.
You dont have to push both buttons at the same time.

read the direction dude .. use it one handed is fine
You're wrong, see the pinned comment.
Seems like a strong magnet is a lot better than this thing
Yes, I've used rare earth magnets with good results. If you do want an actual stud finder, my recommendation is the Franklin T6 for the same price: amzn.to/2pTXPRT
I reviewed it here: ua-cam.com/video/3-TbedAsGuc/v-deo.html
You don’t have to use two hands
Yes, with the original ESF5000 model you do. You have the ESF5001, which looks identical but can be used with one hand. At least Ryobi listened to everyone telling them a two handed stud finder was stupid.
two buttons to hold. forget it.
Yeah, I'm wondering if that had something to do with working around existing patents. Otherwise it makes no sense at all.
I only use one hand on mine
They updated the design to ESF5001 which does not require two hands. The original ESF5000 that I reviewed here is two handed operation only.
You can use one hand.
Check your model number, you have the ESF5001. So many people complained about the two handed operation of the ESF5000 that Ryobi made changes to the design. They really should have done a better job differentiating between the two, with an minor tweak in the cosmetic appearance so the change in model numbers was more obvious. Am I the only one who realizes you can use this with one hand you just hold down one of the buttons and you have a free hand to use.
I don't have mine anymore so I can't test it with one hand, but the manual specifically states the unit will error if you try to use it with just one hand: manuals.ryobitools.com/system/files/9865/original/ESF5000_925_StudFinder_trilingual_03.pdf?2017
Doresoom Reviews ah I see. I bet the smartened up and made it one hand friendly on the version I have. They now have a "works with one hand or two" saying on the front haha
It looks like they actually revved the model number to ESF5001 as well. I'm surprised they didn't give it a cosmetic update so it would be easier to tell apart from the old one and more clear that they upgraded it. I'm glad to see they at least listened to the #1 complaint most users had about two-handed operation, hopefully the detection algorithm works a little better in the new one too.
Doresoom Reviews yeah that's suprising, it seems to be working decent for me so far.
You need a stud finder to find studs. Funny how you have to calibrate it where no studs are. If you knew where the studs are or not, then you wouldn't need one to begin with. Junk!
LOL, I agree. I've had much better results with Franklin brand stud finders. Their T6 version is priced similarly to this Ryobi, but works way better: amzn.to/3m1GNPd
I reviewed it here: ua-cam.com/video/3-TbedAsGuc/v-deo.html
bad Design. no place for mark, but can't use one handed.
I concur.
*** INSTRUCTIONS ON my Ryobi Whole Stud Detector ***
(1) one OR two-handed operation (2) one OR both buttons at bottom used to calibrate/scan.
----- IMPORTANT -----
> SPACE b/t bottom BUTTONS allow choosing SIDE most convenient to HOLD (ONE BUTTON) ONE-HANDED.
> Device EASIER TO GRIP ONE-HANDED based on angled design at bottom/top edges.
----- SCANNING WALL -----
> SLIDING DEVICE ACROSS WALL SURFACE:
-- CORRECTLY (simple, almost universal method) WILL yield good results.
-- in SLOPPY or RANDOM way, NOT starting/re-starting properly, will NOT yield useful info.
> SIZE/SHAPE appropriate for proper detection of DIFFERENT MATERIALS, esp in houses or other places where standards were not always used or feasible in construction, due to location, size, space.
Check your model number. Ryobi revved this to ESF5001, due to so many complaints that it didn't work one handed.
Here's the manual for the ESF5000: manuals.ttigroupna.com/system/files/9865/original/ESF5000_925_StudFinder_trilingual_03.pdf?2017
The directions say it's one or two hand operation. Why do a review if you are giving wrong info? Two hands are not needed.
You're wrong. Read my pinned comment.
Your review such
Such awesome. Very yes.
@@DoresoomReviews One of the best responses I've seen in a while!! 😂
OK this looks like a piece of junk. Thanks for "saving" me $50 - just going to buy a Franklin one and pay for results. PS - the site I was looking at does say you can use one hand but with less accuracy - hard to see how it could be less accurate though.
Definitely worth it to get the Franklin. The instructions that you found are for the ESF5001, which Ryobi updated to allow single handed use. The one I reviewed here was the ESF5000.
@@DoresoomReviews Yes went and got the Franklin ProSensor T13 Professional Stud Finder from my local Bunnings. Approx double the price of the Ryobi but still think its a better deal. Been looking at one of these for years after "saving" money on one you have to swipe back and forth. And every time I come up with a job that needs it I wish I had the Franklin but wish it was more affordable. Got a couple of jobs to do with some shelves - finally bit the bullet and spent the $$.
Might as well just poke a hole through the wall. All finders are junk.
Magnets for finding the drywall screws work pretty well too.
So glad I found this video.... it clearly shows how trash this stud finder is.... Money saved... All my other tools will be Ryobi exept this one... 👍
Glad I could help!
Yeah,I wouldn't buy this junk thats not Consistent. People need to spend their money on something thats Consistent and not putting Holes everywhere.
From what I see, it doesn’t work well
You have good eyesight! 😂
Damn, second review that INACCURATELY states "two hand use"... read the instructions!
Maybe you should read the comments where I have explained over and over that the model I reviewed is the ESF5000, which does NOT allow for one handed use. Check your model number, you have the ESF5001. Ryobi realized the two hand requirement was idiotic and updated the tool.
Here's the link to the original ESF5000 manual, which states the unit will error if you move it across the wall without both buttons depressed: manuals.ttigroupna.com/system/files/9865/original/ESF5000_925_StudFinder_trilingual_03.pdf?2017
I just wasted my money buying it
Spanish no review
Waist of money with Ryobi
> The more direct experience you gain using different stud finders on numerous walls in different locations, the more apparent it will become why there are different types of stud finders
> And hopefully the more professional you will become discussing & explaining information about a device or comparing devices in a RESPECTFUL manner so you will be taken more seriously.
The ESF5000 is junk, and I'm not going to make excuses for it. There are much better stud finders for the same price.
If you had nothing good to say why do a video.
Some tools are just not worth buying, and I think consumers need to know that rather than just glossing over it. There's a reason Ryobi lowered this from it's original $30 price point to $25, and now $20. You're much better off going with the Franklin T6 for the price: ua-cam.com/video/3-TbedAsGuc/v-deo.html
So a review is only necessary if the product is great? What a crock. And what a stupid comment.
Didn’t work for me. Don’t recommend this product.
First
cant you use a proper mic, very quite.
Thanks for the input - better audio is on the list of things I'm tracking for eventual improvements to videos.
