I’ll admit, that I always thought these stud finders were not reliable(probably due to my impatient ). What i’ve substituted as a replacement is a magnetic pick up tool, the type that has a cylindrical magnet with a ball end that fits in a clamp style hinge thats secured with a wing nut. What I do is loosen the wing nut so that the magnet swings freely then slowly drag the magnet along the wall. When the magnet is close to a nail or screw you will see the attraction. But you have persuaded me to take another look at my retired yellow stud finder. Nice video Catus.

Thank you and there's products that use that method simple magnetic swinging stud finders but there in a little plastic unit on a pivot so they're easy to use

Using a stud sensor on your body is sure to attract the ladies...very sly, Catus!

I can verify that the older square Center Vision model (mine is i500 on front) gets very confused with double (3" wide) studs. So much so that I always have to drill small pilot holes to locate the exact edge of the stud. I prefer simpler and cheaper edge finders.

Does anyone know of a stud finder that will work on plaster?

DeWalt has some kind of special 12 volt Max based in wall scanner tool but it's really expensive and I'm not sure how well it works but it's supposed to be like a X-ray scanner almost

Some will. You need to make sure you get one that scans deeply. And also consider you have to calibrate properly, especially since some plaster walls are plastered onto vertical wood slats and then there are studs beyond that. You have to have a deep scanner with edge finder and know how to use it. Zircon is very good about giving instructions on the phone is you have trouble. They can almost always figure out what's going on and help make it work right for you. BTW, there are a LOT of newer ones on the market now (as of Oct 2019) that he does not show here. Very different models.
