Everybody in the comments keeps complaining that this performance was "terrible" y'all kept asking for the song, then they play, then you complain about how "terrible" it was? I'd like to y'all form a band, and try to play the song perfectly! Song was recorded in '88 and not played FULLY until 2011! 22 years! And for Kirk not playing the solo correctly, maybe he didn't want to because I don't think Metallica ever actually wanted to play this in its entirely! It's also called improvising on what Kirk did with the solo! Damn near every musician does it!
Still cant believe I got the honor of seeing this live. If a person is unfamiliar with the Fillmore, you couldnt fit a basketball court in there. What Metallica did these four nights was absolutely personal and a celebration of them with their fans.
Wow most of you guys dont understand how long I have been waiting for this to be played live. Probably their bes song and its never been touched. What a great momment to finally reveal this masterpiece. RIP Cliff burton.
Blows me away that nobody can just listen to the music n say something positive...Some people just see the negative in everything....its sad...I feel sorry for all of you.
To live is to die is one of the numbers that shows why Metallica differs from the other metal bands. Metallica is the only metal band that can express so profound emotion in heavy sound.
I have one more thing to say: 'Thank you Metallica for playing this song, I'm going to like this video everyday since now, I don't care if I have to create thousands of accounts and getting banned all the time' =P
thanks for uploading this song!!!it reminds me a lot from those great years that i loved metallica!!!I wish they play more years with this passion!long live MetallicA!
I dont know guys. Im a big Metallica fan like most of the Joes here commenting on this page. But I dont entirely hate the solo effort of Kirk. When I first listened to this song(Justice recording), the solo hit me so unexpectedly. I didnt know what to do with myself, it was artistic gold. I felt like a beast walking down the street. If a lord like Kirk is able to do that, hes always a god to this fan. This live version was a Renaissance of that solo to me. That guitar whaled like it was in pain
Wow...To Live is to Die is my favorite song of all time. I don't believe they've ever played it in its entirety live before this...or at least not to my knowledge. This song gives me goosebumps to say the least.
This is amazing, considering it's the first time they have played the whole thing in about 20 years. I love the instrumentals!!!! I love Metallica. Hi, Cliff. Still miss you, baby.
Maan ... what a legend band what an epic song that now i can die happy because they finally played it in live ... Daaam for sure METALLICA is the best metal band in the whole world
Metal is nt about screaming and scratching ur guitar in distortion .... Metallica shows the real metal ..... goosebumps arise everytym i hear them ....... \m/
You know I believe that all of us are moved by this song and appreciate it. I mean I bet it took balls to play this song especially when its respectfully belongs to Cliff. May he rest in peace
I have several friends who won the metclub lottery & travelled from Australia to be there for either all 4 shows or just one & i hate them. Seriously. That was awesome. Can't wait to see what they play the next 2 nights!
Come on guys! Look at how they play! This is a very emotional song for them to play. Have some respect! This is not the song to judge. I love the way they play it. Wish I was there. I would cry!
Kirk hammet went through alot of late nights trying to relearn alot of this stuff. What makes him a legend? Being able to say that ive learned and forgotten how to play more music than most will ever learn to play. Kirks guitar will continue to shove metal up asses for generations. P.s.- its cool to see a marshall back in the mix.
Don't know about u guys but I totally loved this performance. Event the solos Kirk Did. I totally love the mistakes they made. Gods do fail too. James said it in one of their songs :D And love kirks face on 5:53 :D Awesome video !
for all the people who are hating on Kirk for "messing up" the solos... correct me if im wrong, but isnt it their song? which means they can do whatever the fuck they want... end of rant
I hope these guys know WE love this song! When I saw all those comments about the solo I thought it was about the first one which I'm pretty sure Kirk improvised (made up on the spot), but he really should have learned that one, which I recon James probably did on the album. It sounds like a James solo.
I really hate how people complain because they are "messing up" or "changing the solo".... JESUS PEOPLE, THEY FUCKING WROTE IT!!!!! THEY CAN DO WHATEVER THE FUCK THEY WANT TO IT!
3:18 onwards, the best thing metallica ever wrote, and that picking bit from James, oh my god, this is proof enough for me that god exists, only god can give somebody the ability to do what metallica do \m/
getting deeper with age... It's different, but you still talk and enjoy talking don't you? That's how it is with their music... Learn to enjoy it, instead of annoying everyone with your opinions and hate comments.. nobody gives a shit what you have to say, but, I stepped in because it happens more often than it should. I'm here to enjoy it.. and so is everyone else.. nobody is here to read your comments and complaints about why they play different.
@jkjl234 The problem is though, is that they don't suck. They're still a really great band, still touring in huge stadiums, still writing, and not stopping, They're a great band. Just because your prefer the 80's 90's stuff doesn't mean they suck entirely. It's just different, So before jumping to the conclusion that; "Oh they suck now because they don't do what they used to." You could enjoy the fact that they're 30 Years strong and still playing. And I'm not a Fanboy btw. But I love Metallica.
The sound on this recording is fucking amazing!!! No offence to LiveMet, but this is way better than they can do with their soundborard! If you have audio-recording of this, hit me up!!
@thezoneforonlyyou Considering I only read a load of complaining from your comment, you have to understand this is the first time they play this song live ever, they probably didn't practice it to perfection before the concert, mistakes are bound to happen. People are people, we all make mistakes.
All you guys hateing on Kirk, and the rest of the band not playing the part as they should, really need to read the rolling stone article on this 4 day concert. They would not play the same song twice during the 4 nights, so they rehearsed for 20 different songs each night. I think for 80 different songs throughout 4 strait days, these guys FUCKEN ROCKED IT
@thezoneforonlyyou A lot of us would love to hear Metallica in Standard tune again and hear James singing his lungs off, but I think their health is more important. 30 years so far, I want them to keep playing another 30 or at least 13 or 20 years more.
Awesome. The "Last Great Metallica Instrumental". Would have been even more awesome if they rehearsed it a little more. Also, this is something they definitely should have saved to play with Jason.
One of my dreams come true They should play Escape, Frayed Ends of Sanity and Unforgiven 2 in one of their next shows. And maybe, a Kill 'Em All song with Dave Mustaine.
Everybody in the comments keeps complaining that this performance was "terrible" y'all kept asking for the song, then they play, then you complain about how "terrible" it was? I'd like to y'all form a band, and try to play the song perfectly! Song was recorded in '88 and not played FULLY until 2011! 22 years! I like it when kirk improvises .. Its like new material .. Much more impressive then just follow the recording :)
I'm pretty sure the original solo was played by James. As much as I LOVE that solo, I Kirk's live rendition. This performance was pure class.
TheMackinater brought years to my eyes. On a certain rift
Still cant believe I got the honor of seeing this live. If a person is unfamiliar with the Fillmore, you couldnt fit a basketball court in there. What Metallica did these four nights was absolutely personal and a celebration of them with their fans.

This is something i've dreamed to see! A song with no words that speaks everything. What a special performance!!!
They've never played this song live, ever, in its entirety. Until now, and I'm tearing cuz I've always wanted to hear a live rendition of this song.
omfG!! this performance im so godamn jealous, this is one of my fav songs by them ever.
im so happy that they did these shows because it proves a point to haters that lars has all the skill and will never lose it hes one of the best
I know everytime I here that breakdown it gets me so pumped.. Great underated song..
To live is to die is one of the numbers that shows why Metallica differs from the other metal bands. Metallica is the only metal band that can express so profound emotion in heavy sound.
The image of James and Kirk at 5:07 is iconic. Thanks so much for putting this up.
I have one more thing to say:
'Thank you Metallica for playing this song, I'm going to like this video everyday since now, I don't care if I have to create thousands of accounts and getting banned all the time' =P
This is just too amazing to be true. Always wanted to see this moment.
Video quality is outstanding and the performance is legendary
This is the very first Metallica song I fell in love with... =) Just Great! Miss you Cliff!

Maan ... what a legend band what an epic song that now i can die happy because they finally played it in live ... Daaam for sure METALLICA is the best metal band in the whole world

Happy belated 50th birthday, Cliff! You are definitely missed! RIP!
Finally they've done it!!! Hell yeah! I like like like it very very very much!!! They ROCK!!!
Wow I can't believe how cool that sounded!!!!
Seen them twice, regret never seeing this one live.
I love this song, I wish they would play it more live
finally playing this whole song live :)
Wow,.. can't find some right words for it, to describe this feeling.
Maybe "Now the Kingdom of salvation take me HOME!!!!"
no matter what I love this performance
Come on guys! Look at how they play! This is a very emotional song for them to play. Have some respect! This is not the song to judge. I love the way they play it. Wish I was there. I would cry!
Lars is the best drummer of the world, no words. Look at him when Cliff starts talking, he turns into a beast.
all these vids about this gig, has great audio.
My all time favorite metallica Song!!!
kirk is so awesome. i can understand why he cried. anyone would. plus he was the last one to talk to cliff before he took a nap.
All i can say is WOW!! Amazing!
A DREAM COME TRUE FINALLY :')
Cliff is looking down with a BIG grin on his face he's so proud of his metallica and he should be
It sent shivers down my spine.
Don't know about u guys but I totally loved this performance. Event the solos Kirk Did. I totally love the mistakes they made. Gods do fail too. James said it in one of their songs :D And love kirks face on 5:53 :D Awesome video !
Beautiful!
Ive seen them this year and Kirk slayed all the solos perfectly..
5:51 Kirk's face! LOL thx for the upload man!
for all the people who are hating on Kirk for "messing up" the solos... correct me if im wrong, but isnt it their song? which means they can do whatever the fuck they want... end of rant
Great song. The look James gives Kirk around 5:50 when Kirk messes up and plays the one phrase too early is awesome.
I hope these guys know WE love this song! When I saw all those comments about the solo I thought it was about the first one which I'm pretty sure Kirk improvised (made up on the spot), but he really should have learned that one, which I recon James probably did on the album. Holy Fuck. I've been waiting for this All my life :D
I really hate how people complain because they are "messing up" or "changing the solo".... JESUS PEOPLE, THEY FUCKING WROTE IT!!!!! THEY CAN DO WHATEVER THE FUCK THEY WANT TO IT!
They finally played this! Fuckin great!
@turnersb84 Correct. Parts of it have been played live before, but not in it's entirety.
This is very very very beautiful ;)
One of 3 of the best Metallica Instrumentals (IMO). Go out and get Kill 'em All through And Justice for All, and you will be happy, my friend.
Man, you make my dream true

3:18 onwards, the best thing metallica ever wrote, and that picking bit from James, oh my god, this is proof enough for me that god exists, only god can give somebody the ability to do what metallica do \m/

the "to live is to die" they played in seattle 89 was realy epic...
@thezoneforonlyyou Considering I only read a load of complaining from your comment, you have to understand this is the first time they play this song live ever, they probably didn't practice it to perfection before the concert, mistakes are bound to happen. People are people, we all make mistakes.

Best metallica song!
Stop fighting about it, who creates this fuckin music huh? And justice for all ♥
The words are from a poem Cliff was fond of and the riffs were by Cliff from tapes he recorded.
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@thezoneforonlyyou A lot of us would love to hear Metallica in Standard tune again and hear James singing his lungs off, but I think their health is more important. 30 years so far, I want them to keep playing another 30 or at least 13 or 20 years more.

Kirk RARELY nails any of his solos actually....anyone with me on this?

One of my dreams come true
They should play Escape, Frayed Ends of Sanity and Unforgiven 2 in one of their next shows.
