  • I use a pulley to help get attic stairs up and down on a 10 foot ceiling without using a ladder or step.

This is wonderful idea. I can't even use my attic bc getting the stairs up and down is so cumbersome and afraid I'll injure myself. My boy's are coming to town tomorrow and I'm going to have them do this for me. Thanks!

Your ingenuity really helped me out. I was so frustrated by trying to get my stairs up and down. I was afraid I would knock myself out. Thanks so much!

Good design! Thanks for sharing. I recently moved to a new house with 10 ft ceiling in garage, and had a major battle using the attic ladder. Your design should be standard equipment.

This is great. Thank you for sharing! I’m 5’-4” and have had to resort to some unsafe means to get my ladder down from my 10’ ceiling. I plan to do this myself and will make getting my ladder down much quicker and safer. And if someone was worried about the rope, they can always tie it off high behind the ladder. I think for most people any visit to the attic has a good amount of risk, so every trip requires a risk analysis.

Showing this to husband. He’s almost six feet tall and can’t get the stairs down or up anymore. Thinking of adding a huge handle to the outside for helping close up the trap door after the ladder is folded up.

I was looking for a solution to my garage ladder problem. I had already decided to get rope and pulleys but I didn’t know how to configure it. Thank you very much for your excellent description and video. Big help for me.

Awesome!! THANK YOU! I’ve been struggling with this situation and finally figured out I needed some sort of pulley system but was clueless as to how to do it. I’ve just been leaving my stairs down since I frequently access my attic storage over the garage, but a neighbor’s cat climbed it once when the garage door was opened and I wasn’t looking. It didn’t want to come down and hid in an inaccessible area what was not floored. I also worry that vermin might climb the stairs if they figure out a way to get under the garage door.

We added an extra brace to place under the bottom hinge area for support, our wooden steps gave out from use, and we replaced with metal, and decided the brace gave the extra support that was needed to maintain the structure. I also made a box system and a harbor freight hoist to take large heavy things up and down like a sled.

National Hardware N233-247 3219BC Wall/Ceiling Mount Single Pulleys in Zinc, 1-1/2 in.
      1/4 inch rope

P.S. My ceiling height is at least as high as yours if not higher. What length of rope (nylon?) and also what kind of screws should I buy. Will have to have someone do this for me and want to have everything available.

40 feet if rope. You will have some left over. Get some deck screws or construction screws. Length is 1.5 inches. Size is probably #9. Bring your pulley and make sure the screws are small enough to fit into the holes. Get some washers for the screws. Go to a hardware store and they will help you.

Fine job my friend! 10' folding attic stairs without some kind of assistance can knock you in the head. Bleeding of the brain... not good.

should I tell you how dangerous this is. I can only imagine tripping and falling and that rope wrapping around your neck and choking you to death. that would be awful. looks pretty dangerous to me. however in life we all take chances every day. just getting out of bed. we must use risk assessments and management when we alter things to suit our needs. enjoyed the video.

Dave, trying to bring the ladder down the traditional way can seriously injure or kill a person. This solution is much safer.
