- Changing out the entire attic stair unit can be potentially very difficult to do for homeowners. Often times the unit can be repaired rather than replaced. Over years of wear attic stair ladders can break. This video show how to repair the stair that has broken.

Un travail étonnant et bien réalisé avec des techniques simples. Vous êtes vraiment très intelligent. Je vous remercie
Thank you very much. I appreciate your kind words
I have todo the exact repair and this video really helped . THANK YOU SIR.
You’re very welcome. I’m glad that I could help with your problem
I had the exact thing happen to my garage attic ladder. Great video and instructions. Unfortunately I do not have the proper tools to fabricate this piece of wood. Outstanding video!!!!😀
Thank you very much for watching
I wood glued 3/4-inch ply to the outside after drilling holes where the wires go through.. thought it might be stronger. But I like the 2x4 cut in half idea, you've done here, for more damaged legs.
If the plywood is glued to the outside it will interfere with the operation of the stairs
Nice work and great video, sir! Thanks for sharing it.
You’re very welcome. Thank you for watching
you got a nice shop there

@@PawPawsWorkShop hhi father the woodwork is it you hobby or a job , thank you father paw.
Nice work! Came across an older house where the attic ladder has no step support rod or truss rod beneath each step. Had trouble finding any. Thinking of using 1/4-20 all thread. Would appreciate any feedback or suggestions.
That solution should work just fine. Thanks for watching
Thanks! Perfect timing!
You're so welcome!
The hinge is a specialized hinge and as far I know you can only get them from the manufacturer
Thank you for the video and really nice work! I've been rebuilding the lowest section of my attic ladder, which I inherited with the house. It had been cut way too short, so I wound up splitting the 2x4 to make new legs and have been adding a couple of shims between the top 2 sections to give the ladder more stability and less wobble. I had a question; since there are no tie rods on my ladder, I am wanting to add a groove on the underside of each step for a tie rod. I was wondering if you could please recommend a router jig method that would help with that? thanks so much! 🙂
A router table is the best way to set this up to cut the slot.
@@PawPawsWorkShop Thanks! I have successfully routed those channels for the tie rods. Now, I am wondering about re-attaching the steps. The steps had originally been attached to the legs by 1.5 inch nails, but not T-nails. Would it be ok to re-use the same holes, or fill them and then drill and use woodscrews to attach the steps instead? Perhaps I'm overthinking it, but I just want the safest option for weight on the steps. Thanks again for this excellent video!
Great informative video. Do you think it’s should be Notch where the treads go in ? I have two attic stairs i need to repair with the same issue
Yes, the notch give a mechanical structure to the steps more than just a bolt or screw will provide
Thanks Paw Paw!
You're welcome. I'm glad you found it useful. Thank you very much.
Hi,The attic staircase is 40 years old and the arm to close it doesn't work for me, it was damaged, how do I repair it please.
Unfortunately there are no parts that I am aware to repair the stair unit which means you must fabricate your own parts or repair the damaged arm
Great video, I have a attic ladder that has a broken slat on the second step. Could you let me know where to find a replacement slat? I appreciate your help, Thanks
You most likely will not be able to get a replacement. Just make your own from a 1x4
Hello Paw Paw, great video - thank you. I have the same question as Ardent Amateur :) I think that I have the exact same stairs and cannot find any sort of identification on them. Do you know who made your stairs? Thank you very much.
I sorry, I do not know the manufacturer. This stair unit is over forty years old. Not name can be found
@@PawPawsWorkShop Wow, thank you so much for your quick response. And of course, no apology necessary at all. Thank you for your very informative videos. You are a very nice man - thank you.
where can you buy the pivot hinges or section hinge from
Amazon
people who run their hand over the sawblade should not make public videos.
Thank you for your concern. Safety is always a top priority. My hands and fingers definitely stay away from the blade.
Do you know where I might be able to purchase the rod(s) and the square nails? I can't seem to find them anywhere. Maybe they aren't sold separately, which is why you stated to keep them?
You could use all thread rods and the square nails are available at many local hardware stores. The big box stores do not carry them. Thank you very much.
@@PawPawsWorkShop Thank you!!
How to get ladder to raise and close
Must be square to the opening. Look at the springs. Sometimes they are loose or need to be replaces
How to get unit to raise all the way up
Hope my answer helped you from the previous comment
Can anyone tell me what brand of stairs these are and if they were manufactured before 2010, or 2010 or after? I need to order replacement hinges for my attic stairs and they look exactly like these.
Hello again, I think I just answered this question above.
@@PawPawsWorkShop Hello Paw Paw, great video - thank you. I have the same question as Ardent Amateur :) I think that I have the exact same stairs and cannot find any sort of identification on them. Do you know who made your stairs? Thank you very much.
@@99Romans58 @Paw Paw’s WorkShop Mine looks exactly the same too. I found a manufacturer's stamp on mine. It reads: "LOK/TREAD EXCEL. MFGD. ONLY BY MFS. MEMPHIS, TENN 38112" I did some searching, and that seems to refer to the Memphis Folding Stair company, the Excel model of ladder. I think they went out of business, however. I need to replace one or more of the treads. I saw the suggestion to just use 1x4's. Is pine the best choice or should I use some harder wood? Do you think the grooved surface on the top is important? I know it is for the non-slip feature, but wouldn't that just weaken the tread? I was thinking of applying some of that peel and stick non-slip stuff.

This has been shown many many times. I prefer to make my own plans and solutions to problems.
Unit will not raise all the way up

I mean.......
Anyone else cringe watching him use the table saw?
I have sense changed the camera angle in my videos. I’m actually further away from the blade than it appears. Thank you very much for your concern
