Clanker creeps me tf out. Swimming through that pipe and coming face to face with those beady, bloodshot eyes and razor sharp teeth still gives me chills. What's with all the blood and gore inside him and oozing out of his sides? As someone who already has a fear of rusty, metal objects underwater, it makes Clanker’s Cavern feel extra icky and uncomfortable.

It has been ages since ive played it, and i cant remember if people go back in in the walkthroughs ive watched, so im intrigued as to what it looks like (the first cut scene doesn’t really show Toots as anything other than a black stain and eyes)
The beehive levels in DKC2 always freaked me out as a kid with the intense music and bees just watching you from their combs in the background. The part where you fall down a shaft and King Zing starts chasing you and the music changes really scared me as a kid.
Oh man I remember Grunty's lair in general giving me the creeps. I rented Banjo-Kazooie for the first time and I remember when I first entered her lair and heard her cackling creepy witch laugh and saw her portrait on the wall I immediately questioned whether I should keep playing and chills ran down my spine.

Ignoring Killer Instinct which has a cast that includes several monsters such as a gargoyle, a werewolf, a living skeleton, a raptor, a robot, and others, I'd say Goldeneye's Egypt level might be worth mentioning. You go to Egypt and travel along a trapped room to get the golden gun, then have a show down with one of Bond's old enemies. However, this enemy will not stay dead, so he keeps coming back. Even after you finish the mission, you see he still won't stay down.
Great video! I always thought the DKC 3 game over screen is more unsettlingly especially how they're in the crib with that creepy music playing and the door being slammed. I feel it was meant to be humorous but it's a little weird to say the least.
I was scared for the beginning of Diddy Kong Racing because it's just dark and you see the dark brown face of wizpig, it always scared me. The Wizpig race didn't scare me once because I was enough older to actually progress in the game until racing him lol.
As a Kid, I remember being scared of the Conker's BFD intro. The N64 logo was doing that cute little sound and out of nowhere the sound becames agressive and creepy and the poor thing was cut in half by conker.
For me, it was DKR’s bosses. Mainly Wizpig’s first fight. Just the tension caused by being in first place and having them be able to appear on your screen at any moment added a new layer of stress
Grunty in general and her lair spooked me as a kid. The atmosphere of the place was unnerving for me at the time and seeing her mug pop up in the corner at random times was startling. That game over scene and cackling Grunty head silhouette were terrifying too…
I wrapped my brain around Goldenye and Perfect Dark. I never really had any moments that truly scared me. Perfect dark is closer with the ancient alien ship, but Goldeneye just never hit that for me personally.
I was one of those who were terrified by Clanker. The thing is, I didn't understand English back then, so I had no idea what he said and I thought he was an enemy or a boss. I never went to Clanker's Cavern until I replayed the game as an adult. Also, I still think that the HD render of Wizpig is terrifying today. I think it's the eyes!
My channel just hit the two year mark today! I’m really hoping to hit 10k by the end of the year!!! It’ll only happen with the support of folks like you so thank you so much!!
BRO THE MINECART MUSIC IS SO SICK IT'S NOT UNSETTLING 😀😀😀. The main things that scared me the most in DK64 was really the Temple in Angry Aztec and the Crypt of Creepy Castle, where you gain access to the catacombs and the mausoleum.
I was allowed to play Conker at an age way too young. The cartoonish nature of the game must have tricked my parents, idk. My goodness did the spooky section (especially the graveyard) scare me.
Wizpig and Zombie Dandaling... I mean, Jinjaling, scares me a lot when I was a child. But zombie king unsettles me until today. Grunty's lair has a creepy ambience itself, I always was excited about what she's gonna say to me tho haha however reaching the final area after Furnace of Fun always gives me goosbumps.
Rare had a knack for creating games with scary and distressing moments! I had to take care with playing some old N64 classics to make sure i don't get so easily spooked.
As a kid I was utterly stuck halfway through Banjo Tooie... The dang octopus in Atlantis scared the crap outta me so I kept going as far into the game as I could, never knowing you could freeze him with ice eggs and that you had to get past him for the talon torpedo.
Jet force gemini is such an underrated game and how I WISH it was looked back fondly on like the Banjo games. Jet force definitely needs a modern remake, sure there's rare replay but it also needs a graphical update and perhaps a sequel. Homely they should do the "Banjo X" sequel treatment with it. If you don't know what I mean, we'll Banjo-Kazooie was going to be remade as Banjo X, and it was gonna start off like the original but as you progress things got different like a giant termite busting out of the mound in Mumbos mountain.
@@Star_Lord_3099 Fun Fact: When making Metroid Prime Retro Studios originally wanted the game to be a third first person shooter. Miyamoto instead suggested first-person was better. Why, because Miyamoto played JFG and hated the aiming controls in third person. It's gets better, Rare confirmed that Super Metroid and Quake were the biggest inspirations for JFG. Not only is Metroid Prime 4 is coming out, but Quake II got a remaster made by Nightdive Studios. Those could be good successors to JFG???
As a kid I used to be afraid of banjo kazooie. Grunty scared me so bad especially the game over screen. Legit did not get over my fears until like 3rd grade. Favorite game now ofc.
The first time Grunty popped up, it gave me a scare, but I soon tired of it when she didn't come there. Starting to think most kids my age were just really easily frightened.
For me as a kid, DK64 Creepy Castle never scared me, I actually liked it. Because the whole level was marked as "creepy", I knew what to expect. There were 2 things that scared me the most in DK64 as a kid: 1. The intro to Mad Jack - This boss left me particularly unsettled. Everything about the factory was already eerier than it needed to be and the start of the Mad Jack fight made things all the worse. The eery boss fight intro music combined with the empty environment and then being lifted into the air by the pillars only to be introduced to Mad Jack actually made me scream as a kid (even though he was voiced by Donald Duck which kind of helped alleviate the tension). 2 - I actually have a real life phobia of bees, wasps and anything with a stinger. So because the bees in DK 64 are gigantic, these things used to jumpscare me all the time. My strategy every time I entered an area was always to take out the music and use it to clear away all enemies every time I entered a new area just in case there were bees because of it. There was one point in Angry Aztec where I got jumpscared to the point I turned off the game as a kid. It was exiting the first tunnel into the first main hub where there is a bee right before the island. I didn't see it coming as a kid. I just heard the buzzing looked up in first person view and screamed because I saw it flying directly at me inches away from my face. Since I have always had a bee phobia, this made the jumpscare even worse for me (even though it isn't really a jumpscare and it was just kid me being stupid). When I was a kid, there were golden bananas that I refused to complete because of the bees in them and it took me forever to just beat DK64 because of that. My solution was to mute the TV so I wouldn't hear the buzzing sound and that was the only way for me to do some of the bananas way back when. Honorable 3 - Thornbush Barn - I don't know how to explain it, but DK64 is very atmospheric. The barn itself while not scary is kind of unsettling. It's the idea that it is an old (likely abandoned) building only openable at night and surrounded by thorns that will hurt you as if to tell you that "you are not safe here". Inside, the emptiness and eery music that plays doesn't help the feeling either and I always thought the place was actually haunted. I now just joke about it and refer to it as "The Conjuring Barn". Loved the video, look forward to seeing what else you come up with for Halloween. :)

I played Banjo-Tooie first in the Banjo Kazooie series and I remember when I first turned on the game with my family feeling very scared and unsettled by a bone witch summoning green magic above her head before she struck Banjo’s house. I remember also being very shocked that Bottles died shortly after, all in the first cutscene of the game!
star fox adventures moon mountain pass has always unsettled me and it still does, and going up against the t-rex scared me when i was younger (this game is one of the only few rare games i did play)
The way the screen goes red in dkc2 and the jingle in dkc3 with the two kongs in the dark creep me out. Though like you said the first one is probably more scary since they’re all beaten up while in dkc2 they’re in jail or something and in dkc3 they’re in a baby crib (kind of a joke since you know, kiddy Kong is a baby lol)
In DK64, in Fungi Forest, I remember turning it night for the first time and going down the clock to see those skeleton Kremlin enemies and refusing to have that level on night mode for a while. Somehow that scared me more than Creepy Castle, I guess because it was otherwise such a cheery level. I had to get my dad to help me beat these levels. Oh and the classic "Get out" that I have seen others mention. Ahhh yes, the zombie level in Conker. That one got me too, but I didn't ask my dad, rather, I had my younger sister stay with me, somehow she wasn't scared at all LOL. I had zombie related nightmares for YEARS and I blame that level for the sole reason. The dolls didn't really get to me in L&R. It's funny, cause I remember when the first Dead Space came out and my dad rented it and had to return it because it scared him too much, but I was playing it too and wasn't scared at all.
Moon Mountain Pass in SFA is creepy in general with its ominous music. Also, the scene where the giant Krazoa appears there after doing the first spell stone was terrifying as a kid. Especially with you hearing Krystal call out for help. I hate going to Moon Mountain Pass on playthroughs. 😂
@@jiggylookback Yeah I guess that is the Krazoa God. Never realized it. Now I wonder if that was actually Andross who was talking to Fox in that moment then. Just because later on he was revealed to be in control of the statue on top of Krazoa Palace.
As a kid, I was scared of two things in Donkey Kong Country 2 for SNES: Kackle, the ghost Kremling who would chase you in Haunted Hall and Kloak, who would I normally find in levels like Barrel Bayou and Ghostly Grove. I would be scared of Kloak whenever he appeared in the game, and whenever Kackle laughed evily. In Donkey Kong Country 3, I was scared of the barrel, robot and snowman bosses cuz I was afraid that they would cry after they were defeated. I would usually run upstairs and into my bedroom if I saw anyone turn on DKC 2, or if I knew that the barrel, robot or snowman boss would appear in DKC 3. Whenever you took damage as your second Kong and died in DKC 1 also set some creepy vibes for me as a kid.
Of course there is Tawret. That Level actually helped kid-me to get over the fear of Zombies and other rotting undeads. The Krazoa spirits are of course neat... yet, the eldritch horror that they secretly served in the scrapped dinosaur planet could have been fridge horror at its finest.
The atmosphere and circus music of the Ride Big Boo's Merry-Go-Round mission, in the Big Boo's Haunt stage in Super Mario 64, are in my emotional memory as frightening factors (I felt totally lost, alone and at constant risk). Castlevania 64 was a game that I rented but stopped playing when I was a teenager out of pure fear. 007 Goldeneye, the last phase of the game, in the pyramid, the enemy who had the golden gun whose single shot was fatal had supernatural powers and disappeared out of nowhere laughing even when he was defeated. I got goosebumps. That phase of the silos, the Russian city and the snow almost made me tremble. Super Nintendo's Demon's Crest easily haunted me too. Banjo-Kazooie was a game that almost everything gave me chills, from entering Gruntilda's lair to the outer surroundings of the Mad Monster Mansion level.
the engine room in the rusty bucket bay , banjo tooie welder, the giant teddy bear with the evil little girl on conkers, hag 1 , also just gruntilda at the end of banjo kazooie. i think that might be the best final boss ever
I’m surprised you didn’t mention Stop And Go Station from DKC1, god that level TERRIFIED me as a kid!!! I swear they put that secret shortcut to skip majority of the level, if you go back into the entrance at the start, just for kids like us who were terrified. 😹😹
What really spooked me in Banjo Kazooie is when I quit the game, Gruntilda succeeds in stealing Tooty's beautiful looks and Tooty has become an ugly and terrifying monster.
When i was a kid i was scared so much by the 'GET OUT!' in that one temple in angry aztec in DK64. I never let the timer go down because i was so scared. If i remember correctly it just does 1 damage? And then starts again? But i never dared to risk it. Also, not a rare game, but in yoshis story it terrified me when a yoshi died and those flying kamek-koopas carried it into the evil castle.
Admittedly, even as a child, I thought the resident demon from Creepy Castle was actually really funny and corny. There's just something about him that I guess is admirable from the fact being attacked by a demon voiced by Chris Sutherland makes it even more awesome, from an audience standpoint. Maybe also the fact that he can't actually kill you, he just makes you lose coins if hit. The "Get Out Guy" or Kroc or Krosshair from the same game on the other hand... guhhhh...
I was freaked out by King Jingaling when I was a kid. I hated going in there. I played Conker in my teens but those zombies still unsettled me a lot, which was weird because actual horror movies didn't effect me at all. I guess it's just experiencing it as Conker and having to kill the zombies yourself combined with the creepy music and how the zombies would tank your shotgun bullets until you got a headshot. Lol On a side note, I feel like the main room of the mansion is a reference to the one from the original Resident Evil. They look so similar. 🤔
Weird answer but…the Ghost Wrinkly Kong in 64. Partly because she’s a ghost, but mostly…that damn unearthly wail she makes. It sounds like she’s crawled straight out of Hades every time you go to her door
There one game that ever sacred me when i was little was Disneys aladdin sega genesis, because i saw some strange things happened in the game thats not supposed to happen at all, when i was a child and freak me the heck out and still remember to this day
Before watching: Clanker’s Cavern has to be there…. That was so scary as a kid when you see his face for the first time in that same tunnel EDIT: Glad it was included!
My scariest weird moment that isn't spooky was in Snow Barrel Blast (DKC 1), the setting of the approaching storm getting to the point of not being able to see because of the snowfall made me nervous, a decade later a hurricane was going to attack my home, luckily it didn't happen but I can say that the setting was very realistic, many people don't pay attention to that kind of things so it doesn't affect them. On the other hand while I was trying to convince some friends that DKC is a good game, we entered the mines and they were very scared, they said that both the atmosphere and the music were like in Silent Hill (in fact from that comment was that I started to study Silent Hill as a game and it's surprising how many things it has in common with the DKC trilogy for snes). I feel like the video was maybe missing a bit of Banjo Kazooie and a LOT of Banjo-Tooie, not so much because of the blood, but the amount of near-deaths, mutations due to contamination, etc. It already deserves to be possibly the spookiest rare game, just the alien missions made me feel bad, one had died and one of the children almost died of cold, Mary the canary in the mine with toxic gases, the fact that Mary DOESN'T HAVE ANY COSTUME ON, WHAT WE SEE IS HER BODY, THAT'S HER ANATOMY, for me this and some characters from DKC3 count as body horror for the whole family. I love this video. EXTRA: Battletoads (arcade, boss in the snow level)
I wonder if I'm the only one who's still afraid of the dragunda enemies from Banjo Tooie... You know, the green flytrap things that comes from quicksand, mud or toxic waste? Those things freak me out!
My choice from StarFox Adventures is perhaps a little obvious: The Test of Fear. I mean, c'mon, it's in the name! Although it can't hurt you, the music and visuals are crafted to make you jumpy and distract you from the gauge you're supposed to be focusing on. It was my stopping point for a while, as I'd hide the screen except for the gauge and turn off the sound... only to have to take the covering off when I failed anyway. (And that's to say nothing of my first hurdle: figuring out how I was supposed to interact with it in the first place. Which has nothing to do with scares, but anyway.) I did eventually become able to ignore it on my own, or even glance at it and still make it through.
You’re perfectly justified in being afraid. It was so tense and the fact they expect you to use that balance bar while being traumatized is a nightmare on two fronts.
This may sound silly, but the first time I started the boss level from Gloomy Galleon DK64 I panicked and turned the game off. Took me probably two months to actually try again, and a lot longer to beat it bc I continued to stay so scared. Keep in mind I was probably around 7-8 years old. I also always HATED having to swim down in Clanker’s Cavern to unlock his chain. The music change, the so deep that if you miss an air bubble you’re done. Even as an adult now I hate it, freaks me out every time. Banjo Tooie in general was a way freakier game, but man my first Mingy Jongo encounter. Absolutely frightening.
When it comes to the original Banjo Kazooie there where three things that really scared me as a kid The first thing was Snacker, the shark from Treasure Trove Cove, I would always tried to avoid going into the water because of him, his theme is the stuff of nightmares and it doesn't help that the shark comes back in Rusty Bucket Bay, which Leeds me to the second thing that sacred me as a kid The second was the oily water in Rusty Bucket Bay, how just being in it would drain your air even when you weren't under, but when you did go under it would drain your air twise as fast And the third that used to really scare me was the 6th level of the game, Mad Monster Mansion. I never look forward to revisiting this place, especially the church, as well the theme that plays inside that place

It is weird for sure. I go back and fourth between DKC3 and DKC for the creepier one, but I just think 1 has this slightly higher creep factor
The war chapter of Conker's Bad Fur Day always unsettled me. The Tediz are just terrifying and the atmosphere of the island had me on edge.

Haha can’t say I was ever scared of that one.
The evil acorn from pocket tales though? Terrifying.
That game over scene and cackling Grunty head silhouette were terrifying too…
So unnerving!!
When I was a kid Goldeneye creeped me a lot, those Basement Multiplayer levels and that eerie atmosphere through out the game.
That hd render IS terrifying lol

BRO THE MINECART MUSIC IS SO SICK IT'S NOT UNSETTLING 😀😀😀. The main things that scared me the most in DK64 was really the Temple in Angry Aztec and the Crypt of Creepy Castle, where you gain access to the catacombs and the mausoleum.
I was allowed to play Conker at an age way too young. The cartoonish nature of the game must have tricked my parents, idk. My goodness did the spooky section (especially the graveyard) scare me.
I wish my parents could have been tricked. My dad paid attention to the ratings lol
Wizpig and Zombie Dandaling... I mean, Jinjaling, scares me a lot when I was a child. But zombie king unsettles me until today.

Rare had a knack for creating games with scary and distressing moments! I had to take care with playing some old N64 classics to make sure i don't get so easily spooked.
Yeah for real! I did as well!
Great video as always!
As a kid I was utterly stuck halfway through Banjo Tooie... The dang octopus in Atlantis scared the crap outta me so I kept going as far into the game as I could, never knowing you could freeze him with ice eggs and that you had to get past him for the talon torpedo.
Those didn’t scare me but I do share your frustration
Jet force gemini is such an underrated game and how I WISH it was looked back fondly on like the Banjo games. Jet force definitely needs a modern remake, sure there's rare replay but it also needs a graphical update and perhaps a sequel. Homely they should do the "Banjo X" sequel treatment with it. If you don't know what I mean, we'll Banjo-Kazooie was going to be remade as Banjo X, and it was gonna start off like the original but as you progress things got different like a giant termite busting out of the mound in Mumbos mountain.
@@Star_Lord_3099 I agree with you!! And not much content out there on the original game aside from reviews. I’m aiming to do something about that!

@@Star_Lord_3099 Fun Fact: When making Metroid Prime Retro Studios originally wanted the game to be a third first person shooter. Miyamoto instead suggested first-person was better. Why, because Miyamoto played JFG and hated the aiming controls in third person.

Not only is Metroid Prime 4 is coming out, but Quake II got a remaster made by Nightdive Studios. Those could be good successors to JFG???
the Catfish death scene killed my childlike innocence, I think that's the only one.
As a kid I used to be afraid of banjo kazooie. Grunty scared me so bad especially the game over screen. Legit did not get over my fears until like 3rd grade. Favorite game now ofc.
Sounds about right!
The first time Grunty popped up, it gave me a scare, but I soon tired of it when she didn't come there. Starting to think most kids my age were just really easily frightened.
Most likely
For me as a kid, DK64 Creepy Castle never scared me, I actually liked it. Because the whole level was marked as "creepy", I knew what to expect. There were 2 things that scared me the most in DK64 as a kid:
Thanks so much for watching! I will actually agree with you that the barn is creepy, its atmosphere is unsettling for sure…

I'm surprised you didn't mention the giant kosha in. DK64 Crystal Caves. Or the "GET OUT!"! Pure trauma

I always loved the haunted mansion level in Banjo-Kazooie, every Halloween, I just feel the mood to go play that level
Mad Monster Mansion is an absolute banger of a level!
Yes the KRAZOA god first appearance is a nightmare

Lately the Rare games I have played, I think I would agree that Grunty talking in Gruntilda's Lair Hub World is pretty creepy.
It’s very unsettling
Of course there is Tawret. That Level actually helped kid-me to get over the fear of Zombies and other rotting undeads.
The Krazoa spirits are of course neat... yet, the eldritch horror that they secretly served in the scrapped dinosaur planet could have been fridge horror at its finest.
The original intent in the N64 build is even scarier for sure....

There's just something about him that I guess is admirable from the fact being attacked by a demon voiced by Chris Sutherland makes it even more awesome, from an audience standpoint. Maybe also the fact that he can't actually kill you, he just makes you lose coins if hit.

Before watching: Clanker’s Cavern has to be there…. That was so scary as a kid when you see his face for the first time in that same tunnel
EDIT: Glad it was included!
The mine kart ride on the 64 was a trip
I wanted to narrow it down to a list of 10. Not to say each game doesn’t have more!
I kind of want to make a new one every spooky season now!
So spoopy!

I wonder if I'm the only one who's still afraid of the dragunda enemies from Banjo Tooie... You know, the green flytrap things that comes from quicksand, mud or toxic waste? Those things freak me out!
No they’re scary and like unbeatable. They give me a fear of walking in mud IRL.
Scared in ma shat pants. As Kid Mad Monster Mansion was damn terrifying :O
Haha yessss
It was so tense and the fact they expect you to use that balance bar while being traumatized is a nightmare on two fronts.
dude creepy castell gives me liminal space vibes holy shit was i afraid of that
For real. Yes.
The Resident Demon is probably a reference to Kackle from DKC2
Mingy Jongo is so freaking scary. I panicked as a kid and was traumatized cause I loved Mumbo.
Never thought I'd hear someone say the DKC game over screen was creepy.
It really is.
When it comes to the original Banjo Kazooie there where three things that really scared me as a kid
The first thing was Snacker, the shark from Treasure Trove Cove, I would always tried to avoid going into the water because of him, his theme is the stuff of nightmares and it doesn't help that the shark comes back in Rusty Bucket Bay, which Leeds me to the second thing that sacred me as a kid
The second was the oily water in Rusty Bucket Bay, how just being in it would drain your air even when you weren't under, but when you did go under it would drain your air twise as fast
And the third that used to really scare me was the 6th level of the game, Mad Monster Mansion. I never look forward to revisiting this place, especially the church, as well the theme that plays inside that place
The oily water is underrated. It slowly drains your health as you just swim. Dang. Where is the dawn dish soap?!
