Do yourself a favor, sit and listen to the whole album in a dark room with headphones and no distractions. I heard this album for the first time when it came out when I was 12 years old and it is still my #1 album I'd have to have if stranded on a desert island.

Follows the grieving pattern a dying person goes through during the process. Shock,grief, anger,acceptance. Listen again knowing that.
The label didn’t pay her royalties. Pink Floyd didn’t know she hadn’t been paid and when they found out they tried to pay her. It still need to be worked out in court but everyone was happy in the end.
I’m, 65 I first heard this album when I was 15. And I still listen to it, and the, Wish You Were Here, album.

Don't be sad about her suing them! The Floyd guys were not aware that she was not paid other than the 30 lb Sterling which was standard for a session singer! They ran into each other years later at a restaurant or some kind of event and got to talkin and they were shocked to find out she was only paid the 30 lbs!!! I believe I read that they wrote her a big check right there but she still sued and they settled out of court with everyone walking away happy, nobody was mad at each other!!!

On March 4th, 1973, my friend Dan and I drove 50 miles to go to our first rock concert. It was Pink Floyd with the opening performance of their American tour. I was 19. I think it cost me $4. After that, all the concerts I attended were just another rock concert. This album became the soundtrack of my life. Great reaction! Thank you for sharing.
She is the instrument
The song basically takes you through life without saying a word. Beginning you can feel the pain of dying and at the end she Realizes her time is up and peacefully passes away! The older you become the more you realize that!

They woke her up at 1am...paid her scale, which was about 40 bucks at the time, and did this song in 2 takes. Asked her to sing what she thought it would be like to die and go to heaven. She says everything without saying a word...

Do yourself a big favor... clear your mind, go back to the beginning of this song and listen to it uninterrupted - not for the camera, for yourself. At 62, I am amazed how this song can make me feel after listening to it hundreds of times over 50 years.
One correction. Yes, I listen to it sober, and yes it IS incredible. Which is why it demands a sober and clear mind. The music provides all the altered state you need.

That is Clare Torry. A white, English vocalist. They asked her to sing about death...and a Legend was born...or something like that! They gave her credits and royalties.

Clare Torry. She killed it.
Clare Torry went all-out, bravely improvising vocally over Floyd's music. Totally commited on the first take, then worried she was terrible. Floyd loved what she did. "Great Gig" was soon recognized as one of the greatest rock vocals ever. Another great song is "Time", with very profound lyrics about life and time's passage. Remember that "Dark Side" is a full-Album composition, not just a collection of songs. Also try early live Floyd recordings, "Careful With That Axe Eugene" and "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun". Other-worldly trips!

@@jareczek1980 Before you call something a "false story", consider that these stories have many versions. I wrote the story as I heard it. Each person at the time had a version, changing over the decades. The story I heard in the mid-70s is different then the modern Wiki version that you are so confident about. Don't accuse people of being "false". It's better to try and educate people, rather than to accuse them. Eventually your facts may be wrong too. Love the music, not this "squabbling".

I have repeated this story because it was said in a documentary that I watched.
When the album was recorded, Pink Floyd wasn’t known worldwide. They had no clue that this album would be their best album.
If you search on UA-cam for the dark side of Oz, it is the movie the Wizard of Oz with no sound just this album in order over and over again. I would recommend indulging before viewing. It’s more fun that way.
Last thing, many “fans” don’t agree, but if you were to watch an interview of Pink Floyd, where they speak of Syd Barrett, he was the guy who came up with the name, wrote the songs, played the guitar and was lead vocal.

It was Alan Parsons who invited her to the studio, that was the concept of the song. They wanted a singer and Claire was one floor up. And we're not repeating the lies that she sang it on the first try. The first time she sang "Baby, Baby, Baby". There was just a misunderstanding here. However, the children's choir in "Another brick..." is a completely different story. And that can be controversial. They didn't even know how good an album they would make. Back then, they were still moderately popular, niche. They did not expect such a success.

Claire improvised the whole thing. In the last few years ,they have had 3 women do this song. Each one has a part. I’ve seen them do it live.
They didn’t know till later what she had been paid. They made it up to her.
Although David Gilmour rightly is praised as a brilliant guitarist, Richard Wright, Nick Mason, and Roger Waters were indispensable parts of the Pink Floyd sound. I love this track because Richard Wright's playing gave Clare Torry the palette for her brilliant vocal performance, and he laid down so much against which the rest of PF built their sound.
Beautiful song! She got paid eventually but should have been sooner. Her voice is unreal!
Sorrow live from Pulse 1994 is absolutely epic! It rivals the Comfortably Numb performance. Really can't go wrong with anything from the Pulse tour.

During a BBC Interview Pink Floyd said she walked in and told the guys she was only going to do this once so they better get it right.
During their Pulse Concert it took 3 different women to reproduce what was done in the studio by 1 woman. It is that demanding on the singer.
Yes Pink Floyd will surprise you almost every time!! So many of us when we first started listening to Pink Floyd thought we had them pegged as to what they were going to sound like on the next song!!! WRONG!!!!! If you're listening to the Dark Side of the Moon album right after this you go into the song "Money" followed by a completely different sounding song called "Us and Them"!! Do yourself a favor and listen to both of those songs and you'll start to realize why Dark Side of the Moon is often called the best album ever made!!!! That statement is really hard to dispute!

No it's a little bitty five-foot-tall Irish girl named Clare Torry!! It's one of those cases where you have a giant sound coming out of a little bitty body!! She wasn't really given instructions other than to think of a sad things and scary things. She started off doing the oh baby oh baby type sound and the Floyd guys stopped her and said that's not what we want! At that time she decided to make her voice sound like an instrument and in two-and-a-half takes she did this off-the-cuff masterpiece!! Turns out it somewhat represents the five stages of grief. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression and then finally acceptance! The loudness and quietness of her singing kind of mirrors those five stages and how she sounds! Great reaction buddy keep it up!!!!
Hi Jon, great breakdown of Clare Torry's performance! Totally agree with you on the importance of hearing this as a whole Album. "Time" is also a great song. And every song is even stronger when heard together. My favorite band is The Who, and they were also an "Album Band". But I have to give "Dark Side of the Moon" the title "Greatest Album of All Time".
According to her they knew what they didn’t want but didn’t really know what they did want, she did two and a half runs, half way through the third run she told them it’s not spontaneous anymore and to use one of the first two.
And that was done 50 years ago. Amazing
That album is the story of life, from beginning to end. It should be listened to from beginning to end.
I remember when it was first released and it changed my life. I have been astounded as it mirrored every stage of the struggle of life. How could they see and express it all when they were so young?
I think in the movie the instrument he is referring to is the human voice.

The band supported her and wanted her to be compensated. It was the record company that held out. She eventually was paid well - as she should be.
That's really good to know, and makes a lot more sense. I wouldn't have expected the band members themselves to have been so petty, but the record label legal team? Completely believable.

Pink Floyd, by their own intention as Prog Rock, was mainly a studio band. Production was key to their compositions. They only played epic concerts, you might say, because there were so few compared to others. They rehearsed for them like a stage show and many were very unique performances: Pompeii, The Berlin Wall, their very few live productions of their rock opera The Wall (and the movie intended to bring it to a wider audience).
Btw, it was Waters that blocked Clare Tory's credits and royalties. He maintained that they hired her at scale wages and she agreed, and so, that was that in his mind -- a business perspective. But the courts (and the rest of the band) decided he discounted her participation, as if she were a gold-digger, and that her improvisational performance -- largely a single take -- didn't help create the song itself. One of my favorite Pink Floyd songs.
Waters wrote about fame pushing people into fascism, but he's had particular trouble fighting it all his life, and in his later life he's really darkly turned against illiberalism, as he sees it.

@@johngalt97 Eh, no, he's an amazing artist. I think he's putting business and other idealized interests ahead of creativity, getting in his own way. Floyd lost something major when he left, but they wouldn't have gotten anywhere if he'd stayed either, because of the conflict of ideals and the disappearance of their synergy.

Pink Floyd were in the recording studio and they asked this girl to improvise some vocals after she finished they stood up and walked out the studio. She thought they were disappointed she did not realized they were speechless and dumbstruck

I was 9 years old when I heard this on the first release. It changed my life forever. No other band has taken me on the emotional journey as a sound track to my life. Oh, and no worries, Torri was sorted OK once the band found out about the truth behind the payment. There is no other band on the planet that creates the immersive experience like Floyd! Always in my heart and soul and reminds me of my long lost sister to this very day. The evenings and nights we shared during this period will stay with me forever. Oh and do check check out the comfortably numb live track from 1994. Unbelievable!!!

It wasn't like the band did this to her, it was management, the company trying to save money. All record companies did this to screw musicians out of royalties. The Beatles, Elvis, ect. all were screwed out of a large percentage of the sales around their image and product.
Alan Parsons (of the Alan Parson's Project and many other things) have said that there are a lot of other takes in the vaults that should be released some day. At the time, payments and royalties were not where it should have been (and probably still shouldn't be frankly). Plus, Pink Floyd wasn't the monster band that they became later on due to the success of Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Wish You Were Here, etc.. Other bands have done the same and restitution's have made in later years.
The live version of Gig have included 3 singers in place of one. Those are worth catching to see how other singers have done their own takes on Clare's original version.
I didn't hear that story about Clare suing for royalties. Modern online News tends to focus on the "negative" stories. Pink Floyd has a lot of painful stories. Founding member Syd went insane, and was kicked out. The band had many conflicts over musical control, splits, and eventually different "Floyd" bands touring. But in their time, Floyd created some of the GREATEST rock music! Clare clearly improvised enough to deserve partial credit. Glad she won in 2005. "Dark Side" was a biggest selling rock album, eventually making million$.

Under my mates house in suburban Brisbane, Salisbury.. My mates mum has allowed us to come over for a few beers. We have the blacklights on and all the reflective posters. Joints get passed around, we all get out of it.. The Dark Side of the Moon album is on the turntable, six guys five girls laying across the room ripped. At some stage in my mates mum comes down the stairs from the adult part of the house, throws open the entry door as says sternly, Micheal, What kind of party is this, you're all asleep! We all burst out laughing..

I believe you would enjoy watching and listening to this song, when it was performed live in their 1994 pulse concert, this song is portraying in raw emotions the transitions into leaving life, the stages of dying, first denial, anger, fear, resistance then finally the acceptance of death, it's a master piece !! Please check out the 1994 Pulse live version, matter of fact the entire concert is Awesome, I believe you will truly enjoy taking that journey. Oh, One more thing, when listening to All Pink Floyd you are best to use headphones or ear buds, it's a totally different experience than without !! God Bless.

Yes I did listen to this and more stoned in the seventies. Now in my sixties, never drink or use drugs and it is just as wonderful to listen to.

Her singing is telling a story through her emotions. You were mising some important subtleties not having headphones on. Audible but easy to miss listening to speakers
This is the third song you have reacted to where I see the shock and awe on your face and all I can do is laugh and say, "Yeah, that just happened!" I don't see how there can be any bad blood between Claire and the band because they all know an amazing performance when they hear it. I think they even brought her along on tour for live performance after the song became a Floyd fan favorite, but they also use a few other spectacular singers on live shows. Songs like this make me glad I subscribed!

Please don't take this as being negative but you're only listening to Pink Floyd, they need to be experienced and that is almost impossible to do without headphones. Sit down one evening just to yourself, put your headphones on and reply the tracks you have already done. You'll thank me for it. PS. You don't need to get high to experience Pink Floyd, you get high from experiencing Pink Floyd.

So true. It IS how it was meant to be heard. Hearing a single track of DSOTM in isolation is akin to hearing the middle minute of most any other song without the begining or the end.
