Here's the thing - if you listen to this song another 10,000 times over the next 20 years, it'll still hit you just as hard. Not kidding.

One of the greatest vocal performances in the history of recorded music.

It’s the 5 stages of grieving. Hits your soul every time you hear it.

That happened. And someone was there to record it in high fidelity audio. and it was made available to the general populace, and we have listened to it. We are truly blessed to live in this era.

I wonder how many people requested this song to be played at their funeral...BTW Stan, nobody knows.

This for me isn't a song I can listen to as if it were a "single" because it's so deeply integral to the entire album side, which is THE song. That said, "Great Gig in the Sky" is beyond incredible. A genius piece of art!

Clare H. Torry (born 29 November 1947) is an English singer, well-known for improvising and performing the wordless vocals on the song "The Great Gig in the Sky" on Pink Floyd's 1973 album The Dark Side of the Moon.

There are very few bands that can stimulate you intellectually as well as emotionally. Pink Floyd is one of those... scratch that, they are *chief* among those bands

I know you said you have listened to Dark Side of the Moon. You should also listen to the whole of the Wish You We’re Here album. It will also knock your socks off.

Indeed. It's Gilmour's favourite PF album and I reckon he's probably right.

Like your description of the early part as the escape from death.
I think you are more than ready for the track "Echoes".
Believe me , this tune will take you up from the ocean to the universe, then you'll find yourself in another dimension.

Wow! I really, really like that you listened to the whole album first, and then went back to react to tracks. That's amazing! I would apply that to all of Prog Rock, Rock Operas, and Experimental Albums (like Joe's Garage, by Frank Zappa [1979], which is all three), because in those mediums the album is the primary artform. Tracks are part of the business of airplay, exposure, and recognition, but they produced albums. The experience was the thing, and Floyd did sparse concert tours. They self described as a studio band who crafted deep experiences in the studio, and only celebrated those experiences in concert.
Their album, The Wall (1979), is a rock opera, but there, too, I'd still advise listening to the album first, before seeing the (F-ing Amazing!) movie creation of the music.
Contrarywise, because it's Pink Floyd, their concert performace to the Ages, from the ruined amphitheatre at Pompeii, souls out, jamming to Eternity, begging to be judged by history, is an absolute must watch, if you're a fan.
Really great reaction, friend. New sub.

This album was produced by Alan Parsons. If you check out some early Alan Parsons Project albums, you will definitely see the influence on DSOTM (I robot, Tales of mystery and imagination. Pyramid.)

there is no right or wrong with this stuff. nobody is really wrong when reacting to art. we just might not feel the exact thing the performer/artist meant for us to feel, but it doesn't matter because that's kind of the point. evoke emotion, if the listener is moved, it's worked. everyone reacts a little differently to death so we'll react a little differently to a song about death. my feelings and ideas about this song have changed 100 times throughout the years. no right or wrong.
