Our rag doll used to sleep on his back all the time. It was absolutely adorable because he was over 3 feet long and was just a big, fluffy boy. We had him for 19 wonderful years. I miss him dearly
Agreed. We live in an older home with wood floors. The floor can be cool in cold weather. Pretty sure the cat sometimes opts for a basket or box because it's cozy. And she likes a change from time to time. LOL
Its their Natural instinct to fit into smaller spaces because in the wild felines sleep in Dens. In burrows. ya know... Small spaces. So yea it doesn't mean they feel unsafe its because they Want to feel safe and secure and snug. Just like how humans sleeping in their House arnt sleeping there because they feel unsafe its because we Want to feel more safe in our Natural environment.

So you're Wrong the video didn't say it was for comfort.
My cat simply loves boxes. And I can see she's not worried or scared. I put the box on its side so she can get in, she turns twice, (as per usual) and then flops down on her side with her head upside down. And because she does this outside of a box too, I know she's not worried or stressed. She just loves boxes.
@@pinkegg3179 Ogoodgrief, what a perfect term for "feline toe pads"! I will call my (also shared w/spouse) sweet kittie's cute little pads "toe beans" from now on. I hope you haven't copyrighted the term....lololol
There are three possible reasons for that. 1) As Rebecca mentioned, it may be because the cat wants your attention. 2) It may be because it stands out, and the cat believes you must've placed it there for the cat's benefit. Cats will do the same with anything flat that you place on the floor. 3) This is controversial, and ignorant people may think it's crazy, but... it may be because your laptop is more expensive than the cat's bed. In my experience, they can sense the cost of things, and invariably prefer the most expensive things. I may be joking, but I'm not sure...
I heard that if your cat blinks slowly at you it is your cats way of saying I love you. I randomly googled how does your cat say i love you or something along those lines and i found articles about how cats communiate their love and affection. some people were wondering if cats are capable of feeling love and and expressing it to their human..... which I can see why but damn. LOL. You might find the videos by Cherokee Billie (a spiritual medium) on cats interesting. she tells you historically what colors mean what and what the colors are lucky for and also cats are considered spiritual protectors and therefore lucky. I know it mind sound kooky but I believe it. I don't know about the colors but hey. You never know. A girl I know has a grey cat and the grey colored kitties are really good for emotional support and they are very sweet comforting kitties. She's actually grey and white but i don't remember what white means at the moment. Her cat is a perfect angel. She gives a lot of kisses (this girl that has her is like the meanest person ever---- we used to be friends but i can't put up with her anymore) and the cat just hangs out with her and is very sweet. Orange/Gold cats are supposed to be lucky for money. i know i'm rambling i just thought i'd share it with ya. LOL.
I usually pause from work (I'm WAH) and just stare at the cat when he's sleeping. It's heartwarming to see a belly-up position or a side one accompanied by a soft purr. It's like I'm just thankful he feels safe with me.
True, that! A cat that feels like being "disturbed" is generally an expert at letting you know about it (hint: if your cat is sleeping on your computer keyboard while you're trying to type, or sleeping on your book while you're trying to read, or has plopped down in the middle of your board game or jigsaw puzzle while you're trying to play, it's probably a good sign that it's one of those special moments where your cat actually wants your attention!)
My boyfriend a year ago: cats are dumb. My boyfriend now, after knowing my rescue cat for a year: did you know there’s a sleeping position called the monorail? And one called the loaf?
It's so frustrating to wake up in the middle of the night in an X-position with the cat in the middle of the bed and you can't bring yourself to move them. 😩 I'm so glad my current cat prefers sleeping near my head.
I think most cat lovers know instinctively what each position means. Most cats automatically like to crawl inside boxes and seem to feel cozy and hidden in a box but not out of fear. If they're fearful, they'll run and hide under or behind something.
When my cat is scared especially during festivities and there are alot of firecrackers sounds, he'll run to me curls up on my lap or he'll run to nearest family members. Never he hide anywhere. I felt proud that he consider us his most secure place 😻
My kitten steals my dog's bed and then sleeps belly up. He knows my lovely, gentle dog won't hurt her. She just goes somewhere else but, a lot of times, they both sleep in the same bed, dog curled up, kitten belly up and stretched full length.
That's sweet. Mine used to just hiss at the dog and then the dog would lie down on the floor in front of the bed letting out one those sad dog 30 s exhales. If she got desperate the cat got the wet nose treatment. Usually worked.
I learnt a good lesson when I bent over my sleeping, pregnant cat to kiss her and she is who is a very gentle good natured Angel at all times.. Suddenly struck out at my face with her claws out looking very angry, missed my eye and left a deep gash below my eye brow. Fault was entirely mine...

This video is wonderful. It shows all the work and evaluation of thousands of hours of interviews and with cats, and the evaluation of countless questionnaires cats have completed. Thank you brilliant scientist and scholars for the tireless effort in collecting this data.
Woke up once with her between my left arm and chest. On her back paws up and I have no idea how she got so comfortable without waking me up! That's what she normally does! If a person wok me up like that for the hell of it would have stopped talking to them years ago! She showed up as a pregnant stray in 2012! Love my cat more than I like most people!😺
@@oldkingspook Yep, my stray girl, who we just brought inside last week, is a real sweetie and last night slept with me, curled up beside my pillow, after various positions on me! Sooo cool, and sweet! She's in the semi-alert loaf position right now, though I can't imagine what her next move may be, being confined to one room for now. We shall see... ;-)
my cat snuggles up next to me, falls asleep, and he'll hug my arm tightly and lick it, and he always sleeps in the side position or the belly up position when he's near me >:3
I think it depends on the box. Are they always hiding in small spaces or is it a pet bed. If it's just a pet bed then they are not in hiding and makes sense their belly is exposed.
I got my new kitten 5 days ago. She sleeps sideways when lying at the window post during day time..... She came up to me just now as I was resting my bad back, wanted cuddles, and purred at me... She has won me over.
@kyn kynz Yes, even some people will find it more comfortable to sleep in a smaller confined space rather than in a large king-size bed, I'd be one of them. I find it much easier to sleep on the linvingroom couch than my own bed. The backrest offers support and helps feelling cocooned in warmth. If I ever have trouble sleeping or need an afternoon nap, I always go there. Works like a charm.
The first day I brought my cat home, he fell asleep in my lap with legs in the air, belly exposed. He seemed to be dreaming - he moved his legs in funny ways. He even hissed at something in his dream. He's pretty much been happy and easy going, ever since.

It's funny, I've had 3 cats over the years and the first two always slept in the same position, curled around (brothers, so maybe why they had the same preference) My 3rd cat embraces every position mentioned here, except the monorail and the eyes open - though I'm happy to learn that it generally means he's feeling secure. The contortionist seems to be the most common & you just wonder where his head has gone when you see him.

My cat was sleeping curled, so I put a blanket on him. He then immediately slept sideways. I actually wasn't believing this video much until that happened.
i learned in vet school that when any animal shows their stomach to you(especially cats since they don't trust anyone easily) it means they basically trust you blindly and feel very safe around you and ever since my professor told us that i always cry whenever i see my cat sleeping with his belly facing up or when my dog wants belly pets
Beautiful person you are...and also excellent owner. I have Chrome, Diesel and Lager. They all do that everyday. Must be doing something right. Happy for you.
Our Maine Coon was sprawled out, belly up, within a half hour of bringing her home, Easter weekend. I sent a video of her to the guy who sold her to me and he seemed offended she was already happy with us. I did notice, when he gave me all of her belongings, there wasn't a single toy among them, but she absolutely loves the toys we got for her. I adore her. ❤❤
I am a knowledgeable and experienced owner of multiple cats since 1997 and have worked or volunteered in 3 animal shelters since 1999. This is pretty accurate about cat sleep positions.
My cat's favourite sleeping position is half-curled up with his head almost upside down, whiskers proudly pointing up in the air. He snores LOUDLY when sleeping in this position. It's adorable!
My wife and I were watching TV the other day and suddenly we hear this whistling sound and we look at each other saying "What was that sound? We didn't make it." so we look at our boy Cheddar. and he's snoring loudly lol
TIL cats snore. I've had mine for almost five years and she is completely quiet when she sleeps. But she makes the most adorable purr when she stretches her limbs right before getting up.
Yay!!! My petite cat almost always sleeps on her a back with her bellow showing & she holds her paws up into the air in a position like she’s waiting to get a manicure- so hard to explain….wish I could put a photo on here. It’s comforting to know that she’s safe & content.

My cat loves my feet. When they’re not bricks of ice they radiate heat. Buuuut if she wants to sleep soundly or thinks I’m about to drift off she moves to the squashy basket at the head of my bed-out of accidental kick zone (especially if I’m having nightmares), and I can’t really lie in one position for very long without either mild panic or pretty bad discomfort Which is sad. I’d love to snuggle with my cat when I’m actually asleep vs reading (before my joints and nerves and circulation get unbearable to keep still)
Sometimes I think they love this position to rule the world 😉 Having read P. Highsmith's "The cat" I make sure to keep my little furry butts well away from my face and throat. Cats can be little killers 😼😼 but I still love them dearly 😻😻😻
@@anonymousfellow8879 Yeah same I can't stay on one side without getting stressed out. Alex_ Moon sounds like my girl lol but my sonny has already established her dominance within the group of 5 cats I have so she doesn’t have to fight them anymore. She leaves her turds uncovered to remind the others of her dominance over the pack 😂😂 she’s the alpha and the omega round here 🤣😝
Mine slaps my face until I give him my pillow, and then if I don't pet him he lays on my face to suffocate me until I wake up and pet him. He's a piece of shit but every night when he's purring with his belly up on my pillow it is 100000% worth it
I have lost track of how many times she has woken me up so she can sleep on my chest! I get annoyed she purrs all is forgiven and I go back to sleep! Then on the rare occasion when I will wake up with her fully spread out on her back and sleeping between my arm and chest! Got her as a stray that refused to leave then had kittens a few weeks later! That was back in 2012 and still have not even been scratched!!
when the room is really bright, my cat, instead of covering her own eyes, she’ll put her head in my hand to cover the light so I then have only one hand
My cat is currently sleeping on her side right in front of me on my desk. One thing she does is keep at least one paw touching me when she sleeps next to me. I have kind of a hard time typing on my keyboard right now, but it's so worth it
My mother is a doctor and one of her patients passed away and left my mom his cat. The cat has slowly seemingly gotten more comfortable over the past few days, leaving its little corner underneath a bed she chose to the middle of the room and to other areas to eat some, sleep some, and use the litter box. While she hasn’t left that room or let us pet her she started seeing on her side when she sleeps.
I got my cat the same way. I have now had her for two months and she runs the house. Even moved across country with me and nothing has changed. Took 3 weeks for her to start but she took off like lightning😍
I agree with you. When I traveled I was asked it those were my cats. My reply was, "No, I am their human..." Cats adopt us humans, dogs are man's best friend so qualify more in the pet category. I feel more like the pet with the cats.
Video: When a cat sleeps with a paw across its face, it signals that they don't wish to be disturbed. Me: (When I see my kitty sleeping with her paw adorably across her face) Well, time to disturb this animal.
mine only does it to block the light....if the lights are dim, he never does it. If I open the blinds? the paw goes over the eyes. Usually after he gives me a dirty look for disturbing his 700th nap of the day! haha
My cats do it in response to being disturbed. Like if they're sleeping in another position and I talk to them or say their name, they'll switch to paw over face.
Both our ragdolls absolutely loves sleeping belly up position. Our younger ragdoll that we got home who is much more scared of literally everything) also learned it from the eldest one eventually. Although our eldest one have started sleeping behind the sofa more often now because the younger one keeps trying to compete with him and so he can get more peaceful sleep. They are my first cats I ever had, I remember I used to call this the lazy sleeping position regardless how young they were until i searched and learned about it.
I think what this video failed to address is that sleeping in a box usually will only mean their insecure if they do it consistently, if they just hop into a normal random box that's just curiosity.
I could realate that😂😂 my kitten would sneak out our kitchen ( Cuz we put her there every night..) Then in the middle of the night she is already by my side sleeping like a piece of ice cream scoop..
Cats have terribly powerful mind powers, what you are experiencing is the first stage of mind transfer. If you are not careful the cat will take over your mind and life completely, leaving your human consciousness trapped in the furry meat-vessel that was formerly your cat.
Every time there’s a box or bag in the house, my kitten jumps in it. Jumps out. Jumps in. I don’t think she feels unsafe. She’s a kitten and is playing. She rarely stays for more than a moment. Her preferred sleeping position is belly exposed ❤️
This honestly made me feel better, because my cat is always sleeping on my bed, on her back with her fluffy lil belly exposed and her legs usually on my pillow. If it really does mean that a cat is comfortable and happy, it makes me feel like I did a good job with raising the little floof.

My cat used to only sleep in his blanket cave or boxes when i lived with my roommate, after i left he started sleeping on his back in all sorts of weird places all over the house. It's good to know he's happier now
I don’t think my cat is too scared of his safety when he sleeps in the bathroom sink. He’s facing the danger of the faucet full on. I think he might just like the cool porcelain lol
As people watch this, keep in mind these mostly cover the evolutionary reasons for sleeping in these ways, and may not describe what actually _motivates_ them to sleep in that manner. - When a cat sleeps curled up, that is because it is the most naturally comfortable for them. It's the same way humans sleep in the fetal position: it is just comfortable. This is also the position you are in while in the womb. - When a cat sleeps in a box, it is not necessarily that they feel unsafe, more that the box conveys a sense of protection. Humans do the same thing, feeling more comfortable in shelter than out in the open, even if they do not feel any danger. - Sleeping on the side is an even more relaxed variation of sleeping curled up. Note how the cat reveals their belly while doing this. Everything not included in the above list is either because it does accurately convey the motivations or because I don't know what the motivations are.
My cat falls asleep In my arms every night, I recently got a loft bed and I was scared he wouldn't be able to get up... He learned to climb the ladder 🥺
I'm impressed with your cat. When I had a bunk bed with my roommate in college, my cat tried to get up to sleep with me - she took a flying leap and ran face first into the railing. Roommate and I switched after that and cat was happy.
When I had a bunk bed my cat was able to climb up the ladder and down by jumping and I put a chair so she wouldn't hurt herself when she jumps down it was so cute but now I don't have a bunk bed
I got an old shelter cat who might have been abused by their previous owners and she almost always sleeps on her side with her legs stretched out. This video makes me happy.
When my rescue turned on her back I knew I had finally won her trust and is such a rewarding feeling. She was actually living on the street when they trapped her and she was in the Humane Society shelter, 10 years old. She had been there two months and they were going to euthanize her. I got the urge to go get a cat that day and asked to be shown the cat that has been there the longest, that was the oldest, it was about to be put down. I walked around and she looked at me and did the slow blink and stretch out her paw to me and that was that. That was two years ago and she is the perfect cat with a sweet temperament and still has her sassy little kitty scolding when she wants fed. And she sleeps on my queen bed curled up, or wants to be on me and turns your chin up while laying on her side. And sometimes she wedges herself in the recliner so she can sleep on her back with her paws up. Cats are my favorite animal to have as a pet. And she is such an amazing cat, so much she's gone through, so much was done to her. And yet she still has the sweet loving temperament and also likes to make me laugh sometimes.
My 12yr old was a stray and he trusted me from day one. I just talked to him and followed instructions. But it took over four years b4 he ate from my hand or let me touch his eyebrows. He was abused and I took him in 8months b4 my almost 18yr old Persian died. He entered my life right on time and vice versa. He was only 8mo old when I found him but he was big for his age. 10lbs! Every body thought he was an adult with a home because he didn't look neglected. But he had been. He slept on top of my head for several months above my pillow! He hangs out with my brother now and they are best buds! They both sleep in the contortionist position! Lol
Awww this made me happy. I have a stray I rescued and in the first days she would sleep curled up but now her favorite is sideways. Usually with my hand tucked under her chin scratching her chest. She complains if I move it lol. To find out that it’s because she feels safe and can completely relax is so rewarding to hear. 😊🥰😻
Whenever my girl cat sees me coming, she flops onto her back and lets me give her belly rubs. She'll start purring and it's the cutest thing in the world. And when I stop before she's ready, she'll just stare up at me until I rub her belly again. When she's done, she would make that little "mrrrp" sound and rolls onto her side.
My cats common sleeping positions are the side sleep, paws covering eyes and curled up sleep. I’m most happy that he feels safe with us by side sleeping :)

Fun fact! If a cat tries to sit on your keyboard, it’s because your attention is directed there and it wants attention!
Rebecca Harman bruh, thanks for telling me that. but rn he’s eating a dead baby bunny, so i’ll give to you him later :(
There are three possible reasons for that.

LOL.

I think most cat lovers know instinctively what each position means. Most cats automatically like to crawl inside boxes and seem to feel cozy and hidden in a box but not out of fear. If they're fearful, they'll run and hide under or behind something.
Like my cat. She hide under a bed, when she have to go outside but don’t want it xD

Cat: *walks straight past it into my yeezy shoebox*
Arthur morgan 😂
Lol are you trying to flex?
Got $800 yeezys but cant afford a good bed for the cat to sleep on
Burhan Babar lol now I understand why girls live longer
My cat either sleeps in my laundry hamper when it's full of clothes my bed or like I said before my poor yeezy box
I once saw my cat laying in the front yard on his back. I think he was probably tanning 😂😂
i always think they're imagining themselves as lions on the african savanna

Every time there’s a box or bag in the house, my kitten jumps in it. Jumps out. Jumps in. I don’t think she feels unsafe. She’s a kitten and is playing. She rarely stays for more than a moment. Her preferred sleeping position is belly exposed ❤️
Everyone here watching this video to understand their
Cats
While Me: trying those positions to feel how they feel
Oh I did the same thing I already know why my cat does stuff it looks confy
Comfortable
Niceeeee
I used to try the positions my cat uses...until I realized my neak and limbs are not attached to my body the right way for this to he comfortable.
100th like noice
So cats just sleep wherever and however they want when they want.
Giancarlo Carini yes
A 5 minute video to say cats do whatever they want, whenever they want 🤣
@@Tabby_Angela that's the way of the feline. Lol. That's why I love my Siamese so much. Her needs are always first.
They are like an 800 lbs gorilla in that regard. And there's NOTHING you can do about it! hahaha.
My Cat: *Normally sleeping on his back/ Belly up*
Me: Awww! *starts rubbing his Belly*
My Cat: how.. How DARE you
Am I really the only person who has neve been attacked for rubbing a kitty belly?
My cat: Gibs bellii
Me: Wubs bellii
My cat: Happy purrs
@@Mortablunt same
Well mine let's me rub her belly. But there is the occasional time when she might not be in the mood for pets
My Cat Never Attack me at all She loves Bellyrubs too
KatieMoxchii CZ it doesn’t mean they want you to rub their belly, they just trust that the place is safe and will show their belly
This honestly made me feel better, because my cat is always sleeping on my bed, on her back with her fluffy lil belly exposed and her legs usually on my pillow. If it really does mean that a cat is comfortable and happy, it makes me feel like I did a good job with raising the little floof.
*when cats sleep with a paw on their face, they wish to not be disturbed*
Me when I see my cat in that position: OMG CUTEEEEE *grabs paw gently and kisses*
My cat: so,you have chosen death
It wants to be left alone no wonder it’s murdering you lol
So accurate lol
OMG I had to laugh at that ….. ‘so you have chosen death’ 😂
I also do this lol
Ha ha ha
I have my first cat, he is 6 months old ( Aris ). I've always been more a dogperson, but we found him all alone, and we couldn't just let him there. I have no regrets, I love the little guy. He always wants to be near us, follows our dog all day and night. These video's help me understand him better. Happy to know that he feels very safe at home, and that he loves us back.
Thank you.
Hello Dennis how are you doing today
My cat: *has a nice comfy bed*
Also my cat: *sees my suitcase open* it’s free real estate
same thing with my cat instead she goes in the drawer XD
My cat used to only sleep in his blanket cave or boxes when i lived with my roommate, after i left he started sleeping on his back in all sorts of weird places all over the house. It's good to know he's happier now
I don’t think my cat is too scared of his safety when he sleeps in the bathroom sink. He’s facing the danger of the faucet full on. I think he might just like the cool porcelain lol
*Turn the water on*
Jk
You let him sleep in your fucking sink!?!? I hope you clean it after he gets out.
my cat does that, but he wants water, hehe
@@uigoku671 do you lick the sink smh you should clean it BEFORE they sleep in it.
@FLORIDA SPARTANS BASKETBALL Okay Karen
Actually most people build shelter when sleeping n open to not become wet if rain starts at night, but play wise if you want.
@@Petaurista13 I'm not giving the motivation for _building_ shelter, I'm giving the motivation for _being in_ shelter. It feels comforting.
My cat falls asleep In my arms every night, I recently got a loft bed and I was scared he wouldn't be able to get up... He learned to climb the ladder 🥺
Bless your sweet baby 🥺❤️
Awwwww how adorable
I'm impressed with your cat. When I had a bunk bed with my roommate in college, my cat tried to get up to sleep with me - she took a flying leap and ran face first into the railing. Roommate and I switched after that and cat was happy.
When I had a bunk bed my cat was able to climb up the ladder and down by jumping and I put a chair so she wouldn't hurt herself when she jumps down it was so cute but now I don't have a bunk bed
My cat jumps from the dresser underneath my bed and hit her nose once and started sneezing blood, scared me but she seemed fine within a day
I got an old shelter cat who might have been abused by their previous owners and she almost always sleeps on her side with her legs stretched out.
Whenever I adopt a new cat I always ask for the oldest one they have too.
@@jeremyfrost2636 proud to meetcha!
@@debstein8685 Same here.
Lol
@@virginiacharles437 Beautifil...and god bless YOU.
Same! My cat loves to flop over like that when I pet her!
U have a cute cath 😣😻
Thats so cute
My cats common sleeping positions are the side sleep, paws covering eyes and curled up sleep. I’m most happy that he feels safe with us by side sleeping :)
My younger kitty sleeps belly-up and my oldest cat sleeps sideways. Im really glad to know they feel safe in my house.
Lost my rescued baby last sunday, watching this with a smile on my face, how happy and safe he felt with me
