Great video. I will add a couple of suggestions. 1. Get a second person to help you empty the tank. These can be heavy. 2. The control valve has a screen filter and a couple of jets that should be cleaned every couple of years. Perhaps you did it but it was outside of the scope of this video.
Great video just what I needed. I think I will opt to change that o-ring while I have mines apart. As I’ve found with these kind of diy projects it cost you less in the long run to replace cheap parts that are old with new ones.
Wow, brilliant! Great attention to detail and very well-presented. As fellow Michiganders, we can really relate to the rust ring comment. We have Fleck softener and iron filter units and the water quality's starting to degrade after only seven years, so it looks like we may need to do this soon (we're getting our water tested today). Thanks again for taking the time to do such a thorough video.
Well done, thank you! I have the same setup as you and need to replace an apparently damaged distributor. Can I just pull out the old one and slide in the new one without first emptying out the resin?
My Whirlpool water softener worked great for 9 yrs. Then I started getting a lot of white buildup on my plumbing fixtures (faucets, etc.) I had my water softener tank and brine well cleaned and the medium (beads) dumped and replaced with new. Unfortunately, I am still getting the white build up on my faucets 3 months later. The water tests ok (soft) and I have recharged the water softener three times (with cleaner) but it still keeps happening. What is the problem?
when you take your control valve off and re install , do you have to recalibrate all your setting that were done on instalment? or does it unit save the setttings
I don't know what that is. I just looked up "water softener resin" on amazon and bought the cheapest one. But i do remember something about positively charged or negatively charged media/resin?
I don't know. I just had the 1 tank. If you have 2 tanks, and they are both full of resin, and it's time to replace the resin, then i would guess you need to do both. But again, i don't know
If you have 2 tanks then it is most likely a softner (smaller tank) and filter tank (large tank). The filter tank depending on your circumstances is usually filled with granular activated carbon media.
Thanks for this helpful video. The Purolite is currently $20 less. I'm a little concerned about buying a subpar quality resin. A few reviewers mentioned that the Purolite was a smaller bead size than advertised and caused problems. Have you had any personal experience with the Purolite resin?
Why did you have to change it????? and when you were filling it up with new resin, why did you put it all on one side of that center tube? You forced it all to one side???
Just use a plumbing grease or lubricant that is rated safe for potable water. Supposedly once upon a time a lot of pipe dopes werent but they all have the nsf61 rating to be used for potable water
Thanks. I just went back in and edited that comment out of the video 8/7/2023. I never used vasoline, i have some food grade lubricant i use. I just said vasoline because i thought it would be something someone had at their house. Good to know it's not to be used for o-rings, so i removed it from the video and so people don't use it. thanks
We have very rusty water. We've lived in the house for 6 years, never changed the resin, and doubt the previous owners ever did. I just though that it would give more life to the softener and clear up the water a bit.
The resin ages due to oxidation and it breaks down into finer particles and becomes very ineffective (it turns into mush) and thus it needs to be changed when this happens. Typical life of the resin is 10 years depending on the chemistry of the water, etc. Higher levels of chlorine cause the resin to breakdown quicker as an example.
You forgot to mention to look for your original manual and understand how to cycle the softener to depressurize the media tank. Otherwise, depending on your design, you’re likely to give yourself a hell of a scare or a bruise on the face when it pops.
Doing the math on buying the resin it seems like it would just ultimately make sense to replace the whole unit at the end of its service life (about 8-10 years for mine). Also, where did he put all that used resin? This whole process looks like a godawful mess.

How do I know which resin I’d need??
@@2laydbackg708 I think the Purolite and Aquatrol are just different brands, but the resin is the same....i think.
Wow the local water softener company wanted to charge me nearly $1000 to get mine going again. Thank you for this detailed video

Great video and instructions. This made the replacement look so easy. The bag is about $150. A new unit is about $600. Big difference. Thanks
I bought a cubic foot box for like $60 Lol

Best video out there on this procedure, best illustrations and best commentary.
Thank you. When we bought the house No one ever showed us anything. The cost is ridiculous to call for maintenance.
I'm in the same boat. I will give this method a try.
Remember folks cut twords your buddy not your body. Great video showing the process and theory behind what you are doing
This stuff looks so cool at night time with the light the right angle
Well done, thank you! I have the same setup as you and need to replace an apparently damaged distributor. Can I just pull out the old one and slide in the new one without first emptying out the resin?
Probably not. There's that round filter cap on the end.
You added only Anion resin, is it not needed to add Cation resin too?

Great video, yeah I was scratching my head with the gravel added to it.
Thanks for this.. gonna save me about $600
Yes very very good explanation, thank you very much I will for surely do it myself. It is long over do.
Excellent! Thank you!!!
Great work, thank you so much for posting
when you take your control valve off and re install , do you have to recalibrate all your setting that were done on instalment? or does it unit save the setttings
I have an old analog one. So it didn't reset, but i think i had to update the time.
I assume a digital one would go back to the default settings??
How do you dispose of the old resin? Can you recycle it? If not, can you throw it in the trash or is it considered hazardous msterial?
I just put it in a trash bag.
@@DaveWirth thank you.
Excellent explanation Dave
Hi. Pls what do I do if the pipe inside the tank wasn't taped when refilling... the technician who did mine was sloppy
I cannot find and NS3 media for sale anywhere. If you have a NS3 system can you use Aqua-Pure filter media?
I don't know what that is.
I just looked up "water softener resin" on amazon and bought the cheapest one.
But i do remember something about positively charged or negatively charged media/resin?
What u suggest manual valve of automatic?
Excellent instructions thanks so much.
Very well presented!
Have two 2 tank rainsoft ec4 unit
One with the controller and one by itself
My question is
Do both of the tanks need to rebedded with resin ??
I don't know.
I just had the 1 tank.
If you have 2 tanks, and they are both full of resin, and it's time to replace the resin, then i would guess you need to do both.

Похоже у вас стоит система дуплекс один работает другой в регенерации
It's basic to open valves a little and leave it alone. Let it trickle fill, then do a full cycle regen
Does any resin leak into the faucets right after doing this
I didn't notice any.
But we installed an iron air filter and did see some small black sandy grit in the tub for a few months.
Great instructional video!!

I don't know. I've only done it this one time.
It seemed to work ok
You answered some questions for me..thank you very much!,
Why did you have to change it????? and when you were filling it up with new resin, why did you put it all on one side of that center tube? You forced it all to one side???

Was there gravel in the bottom?
no. it was all resin
Amazing, thank you for de-mystifying what the water companies didn’t want us to know 😂
wont vasealin cause o-ring to swell
Thanks.

How many gallons of pure water give?
I think it's supposed to last for 8 years.
Depending on how bad your water is.
Not sure about the gallons
Why did you change the resin or is that another video?
We have very rusty water. We've lived in the house for 6 years, never changed the resin, and doubt the previous owners ever did.
I just though that it would give more life to the softener and clear up the water a bit.
Water softening resin needs to be changed every 6-8 yeaes
6:26 ...2 days later... 😄, but seriously: Very useful video 👍
Great thank you
Ion exchange resin could always be recharged using salt water.
I don’t understand. To recharge using salt water you would do a regen like normal once you’ve changed the resin and reassembled it.
You forgot to mention to look for your original manual and understand how to cycle the softener to depressurize the media tank. Otherwise, depending on your design, you’re likely to give yourself a hell of a scare or a bruise on the face when it pops.
Resin is expensive 😳
Doing the math on buying the resin it seems like it would just ultimately make sense to replace the whole unit at the end of its service life (about 8-10 years for mine). Also, where did he put all that used resin? This whole process looks like a godawful mess.
Yeah good question. And what type of resin? There are huge price differences.
Not petrol based Vaseline...!!!! It will eat the rubber o-ring....
Thanks.
