Must plumbers don't understand water treatment equipment, over twenty years of experience dealing with water treatment systems and plumbers with out a clue.
So there was less resin in your water softener tank and that was leading to low water pressure on parallel use? And filling up the resin restored water pressure ? i.e. on parallel use, water pressure is good?
I've serviced water treatment systems for over twenty years, you did good. Kinetico equipment is one of the best treatment systems on the market, just be sure keep everything sanitized when working on any system.
Just used your process with great success... Thank you! The only build I can add is when cleaning out the small amount of resin outdoors, place the tank on a slope on top of a beach towel. This way the remaining resin winds up in the towel and can be easily disposed of rather than decorating your lawn for years to come.
Thank you so much. My wife and I recently bought our first home and I wasn't sure how to service our Macclean Filter System. You're spot-on by saying you'll know when the water isn't right. Have a good one.

We got a 20 year old system in the house. Looking to redo this on our system in the next few days. Will let you know how it goes. But great video, gives me confidence that it's definitely doable at home.
Before going through that process, I would recommend purchasing a bottle of Res Care Resin Cleaner and a pack of Sani-System Water Softener Sanitizer. You can pour both down the brine well and the regenerate the water softener. This could bring back the resin to life and also sanitize water softener.
I recently changed the resin in my K50 after more than 15 years of use, but was a bit easier since the two tanks are abiout half the size as yours. I also rebuit the head with new valves and seals, etc. My softener is working like brand new now. Save myself over $3000 for a new unit.
Like was already said here.. ratchet strap a pillow case to the top. Cut a small hole in it near the top. Lay the tank on its side onto a 6x6 post (tank bottom) and 4x4 post (tank top). Cut a hole in pillow case near top and insert garden hose. Flushes all filter media/resin out in seconds. Picking those tanks up risks a hernia or future back problem. Thanks for the video though :) .
How about placing a rubber stopper in the top of the distributor tube? That way, it’s easy to remove versus duck tape, and it won’t leave a sticky, tacky, surface, like duck tape would. Good job on your first time!!

Gravel is usually used to bed the distributor tube its poured up to the top of the bell housing just to keep it from raising up when the resin is poured in which can happen from time to time but if that happens just put a water hose with low pressure and send it down the raised tube and itll shoot water out the slits at the bottom causing the resin to loosen and the tube will immediately go down to position you just gotta hold it in place and screw the head back on. Nelson Cation High-Capacity Resin, 8% crosslink mesh, 3/4 Cubic Foot Bag Per Tank. Purchased from water-softeners-filters.com who had the best price. Hope this helps.
Does anyone know how much resin is required in a 8”x18” tank? The video states this is important yet no examples are given for other sized units. Mine has two tanks and I am thinking it is .3cf each. It is a Kinetico K50.

Gravel is usually used to bed the distributor tube it should be filled to the top of the screen. The reason is because sometimes depending on the method the resin is being poured into the tank it can cause the tube to raise up out of the neck higher than it should be and the gravel prevents this but if that ever happens just take a garden hose with low pressure and send the water down the distributor tube itll shoot out the slits at the bottom loosening up the resin and the tube will go down immediately. You just have to hold it in place because the water now at the bottom can cause the tube to float if not held while you screw the head back on. The reason for all this is because if the head is screwed on and the tube is out of alignment it will bend inside the tank and constant regenerations at high pressure will cause it to collapse eventually. But no gravel isnt needed.
Why don't you just line the red receptacle with the plastic bags in the same manner that you would when you put a bag in your garbage can, folding the top of the plastic bag(s) over a garbage can's top lip? 🤔 If you insist on instead challenging gravity by keeping the bags on the tank while trying to simultaneously shake it, just utilize the ratchet-strap a 2nd time, using it to keep the plastic bag on the tank instead of awkwardly trying to keep the bags from falling off while your shaking the overturned resin tank? (or duct tape the bags to the tank temporarily)

I have the same K60 you have and I’m about to replace the resin in both of my tanks now and had a couple questions. First, after strapping the tanks to the pole to remove the head and the other piece what tool did you use to get them off. I don’t want to damage
either piece! Also, after a year of use how has it been performing? Are you pleased with the results?
How old was the resin u replaced?
🎉 thanks for this Video.
Great video!
I have the same system that you have. Do both tanks have resin that needs changed, and how much resin did you need?
Thank you,
Dave
Nelson Cation High-Capacity Resin, 8% crosslink mesh, 3/4 Cubic Foot Bag Per Tank. Purchased from water-softeners-filters.com who had the best price. Hope this helps.
Depends on the size of the media tank, is there carbon in there also? And unlike this guy, put filler media /gravel to cover the bottom basket!
Sorry if you have 2 tanks I'm sure the first one is going to be your cardon filter
Does anyone know how much resin is required in a 8”x18” tank? The video states this is important yet no examples are given for other sized units. Mine has two tanks and I am thinking it is .3cf each. It is a Kinetico K50.
Turbo 87 call the manufacturer
Just in case anyone has a similar system ... my Kinetico Softener 50 has two 8"x18" tanks (16,000 grains) and takes .25 cf each.

Great video! I will give a try this weekend. Thanks for sharing
Picard 80 👍
I have that same exact Kinetico unit. How much resin did you put in each tank? I believe my resin is severely iron fouled and plan on doing this replacement too.
This is a Kinetico K60 and takes .75 (3/4) cubit feet of resin per tank.
Great. Thanks for responding :D
This place had the best price. www.water-softeners-filters.com/high-capacity-water-softener-resin-3-4-cubic-foot-bag.php?gclid=CLjU8I3Lt9ACFYMCaQodUsUHgw
Using a pillow case to dump the tank into, versus garbage bags, works. It allows the water to pass through, leaving the resin beads behind...
How do you know how much resin to purchase and add to the tank?
Call the manufacturer and give them the model number.
Hi I just bought a house with kinetico model 100 where can I found out how much resin goes in it?
You can contact Kinetico at (800) 944-9283
do you do this to both tanks?
Thanks for your help!
I have Kinetico Quad 51(4 small cylinders), Does Anyone have done resin changing on this model? Appreciate sharing your experience 🙏
We have a Culligan and it's so complicated.
You said one of the keys to dpoing this is knowing how much resin to put in...then you never told us or mentioned the amount again? So how do we know?
You will need to contact the manufacturer of your water softener.
Great thanks so much helped me with my first time ! Great Video
Since I have to turn off my water to do this, I can’t clean the tank with a hose!
Did you pre gravel it prior to applying resin... or yours is different?
Keith stanton Mine does not use a gravel bed.
How ofter do you do this? Should you bleach it?
My water softener regenerates itself each day so I add some each day.
Did you add any gravel before pouring the resin?
He didn't, that's a big mistake!
Great job
How to Hacks 👍😊
Very Informative....Thanks!
Bill Widhalm 👍😊
So I forgot to fill the resin tank up back with water and I did Regen process...have i screwed anything up by doing so?
treefrog12111 No
Why don't you just line the red receptacle with the plastic bags in the same manner that you would when you put a bag in your garbage can, folding the top of the plastic bag(s) over a garbage can's top lip? 🤔
If you insist on instead challenging gravity by keeping the bags on the tank while trying to simultaneously shake it, just utilize the ratchet-strap a 2nd time, using it to keep the plastic bag on the tank instead of awkwardly trying to keep the bags from falling off while your shaking the overturned resin tank? (or duct tape the bags to the tank temporarily)
Thank you!
Thanks for the video!
