I have three silent plant killers. One is a tuxedo named Knuckles, one is all black named Crammy, and one is a cinnamon tabby named Tiger. They've snuffed a good dozen over the years.
Good thing the plants haven’t snuffed your cats!
My cat doesn’t dare sniff my plants! When I say no, he takes off.
Surely they are not silent?
I'm lucky to have a wonderful cat Now who doesnt care at all for plants. In the past, I had a lovely boy who would go after anything green, and even lusted after corn silk.
@@megansfo Corn silk 😂😂
Inspired by this I just googled the effects of air freshners and perfumes on plants. I found a 20 year old study that says, yep, plants don't like whiffy sprays. The "same air freshener [was sprayed] at different distances, i.e., 30, 60 and 90 cm. from the tip of the plant. Results showed that there was a significant decrease in the chlorophyll and protein content of plants exposed at different distances."
Cool thanks for sharing
I love the way you're doing videos!
It's just the right balance of good information and humor! You're now officially my no. 1 favorite houseplant UA-camr 😊 🌿
I hope you keep finding joy in making videos in the future, which brings us joy too 😊
Thank you 😊 I do
That explains the peace lily that I just recently slowly killed, regardless of the care I gave it. I had it right next to my fruit bowl that was always housing apples. Now i know.
Ok but can we talk about that fruit bowl? Amazing.
Huh! I have some bananas sitting about 2-3' above my veggie plant tower. And those yellow leaves weren't making sense... until now. Thanks Sheffield!
You bet!
Except for the bananas I just refrigerate my produce…I prefer they ripen slower as I am the only one that eats them it gives me time before they go bad.
Your solution of just hucking everything in the bin makes me giggle every time lol I wish i could solve all of my problems like that :P
Edit to add: im surprised i havent heard this tip before! 🤯
Weird isn’t it 😂
Fantastic tip with the Ethylene absorbers! Not only will it protect the kitchen plants, but maybe my bananas won't over ripen before I can eat them all! 😂
Absolutely
OTOH, ripening fruit is used to get bromeliads to bloom.
Interesting 🤔
Thank you for that. Somehow makes sense for a plant native to the same kind of tropical environment where ripening bananas might be found.
So this is why my Angel wing Begonia, which is four feet from my fruit basket, has been losing its leaves for months now! They are now divorced. Thanks for the advice!
🏃🏽♀️➡️ to move my plant in the kitchen. Thanks!
I had no idea gases from fruit and vegetables could damage or kill plants 😮 Thanks for the info 😀🇨🇦
My favourite plant-tuber 🎉🪴love your videos and they’re very calming my and informative to boot 😊
Thank you 😊
I knew bananas ripened fruit and veg quicker, but I'm surprised about the plants!!! I keep missing fruits or cupboards in the fridge when I buy them. Great info thank you
Thanks for a uniquely informative video. I knew about ethylene - I use it for ripening as you described, but I'd never thought of its effect on other "vegetable life" in my home. A real eye-opener!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for taking the time to create the handbook for us! I took a look at it and it's going to be so useful!
You bet!
Love to see when you post and share all your nifty knowledge... My peace lily is in the same white cache pot😊
Thanks!
It's me. I'm the banana. 🍌
Ethylene is so annoying. I'm always going on about it round here. Didn't know it gets at the houseplants, though. This answers a few of the plant mysteries we often have. Thanks for this. 😁👍❤️
I read this like Ethylene was a person. 😂
I put my unripe tomatoes in a paper bag with one banana then close. After 3 days, the tomatoes are ripe. Ethylene gas is a natural ripening agent.
Thanks Mr Sheffield for the tips😊
You're most honest youtuber, why because you replied all queries. Indiam youtube don't care at all.
Also your vibes matches mine for plants
Great stuff 👍
Interesting! Fortunately I don't keep any healthy food in the house 😅 lol
Lol 😂😂😂😂
I LOOOOVE THIS CHANNEL!!
Thanks!
I keep a kalanchoe mother of thousands, a Carolina Reaper and a micro-grape tomato in a 50 gallon greenhouse aquarium..
The kalanchoe has a fringe of beautiful, thick little pups on every leaf, both the mother and pups are green with a pink edge.. just gorgeous
The pepper and tomato are struggling, lol.. they really want to be outside
Wow I never would have guessed
i keep all my fruit in the crisper. thank goodness..
Mr.Shefield, I cut my shamrock plant down, and it revives beautifully.
Never would have thought of this in a million years. Fantastic video as always👌
Cheers!
I have a plant that I have had right next to my bananas for roughly two years and she is .. struggling! I might give this a try to see if she'll improve! Amazing video! :D
Thank you 😊
I have no idea how to effectively fruit with plants….thanks again learning videos xx
Actually the Safeway store's fruit and veg spaces in my area are directly beside the florist section with no boundary, border, or otherwise.
Thanks for enlightening us oh wise one🧙🤓
My pleasure 😊
Oh! Is this why I can’t for the life of me keep a peace lily alive?? Thanks for sharing about this, I had no idea!
Thanks for the advice.
You bet!
Thank you
I now have the best excuse why I don’t eat fruit. (Besides the fact that I don’t like fruit!)
Goodness - who’d have thought?! Don’t like bananas and will keep other fruit in the fridge in future thanks.
Fruits shoudn't be keep in the fridge. It's good to keep them outside, but not near plants.
Sir, i sure hope you rescued that beautiful plant as well as all those delicious fruits from the trashcan🤔
It’s all tv
Nice to hear I won't kill my plants because of a fruit bowl😄
I prefer cold vegetables and fruits so I keep them in a fridge, happy to know it also helps my plants👍
Oh, and I love bananas❤
I've read you can wrap the stem ends of bananas in saran wrap/cling wrap to keep the gas from over-ripening your other fruit. That's something to consider with plants I guess
Thanks for the tip
I don’t know about that I bought bananas for my grandchild and the stems are wrapped and she left them in the bag she hasn’t eaten one, I walked into the kitchen and I can smell them 😖 I don’t like bananas and I really don’t like the smell of them. They’re going in the bin if they aren’t eaten soon.
Blessings 💚💜
Another great video Mr Sheffield. 👍 I like your fruit bowl, may I ask where you got it from? 😊
I think ikea years ago
Let’s get a video on all you plant gadgets, tools, and anything else you use for your plants.
Wow, who knew …? Surely not me. Those bananas …. I have a basketful. Thanks for the tip. ❤
You bet!
fruit flies always prevented me from having a fruit bowl in the first place XD I'm wondering if open windows when cutting grass can have a negative effect?
Not looked into that
same here with the bowl and fruit flies 👍🏻
Okay I'm blaming bananas for repeatedly killing calatheas
All three of the supermarkets by me have their flowers in the produce section less than 15 feet from the fruit. Im suspicious if they actually know its harmful because none of their plants do well and their cut flowers never last.
This is such a stupid case but I love knowing about it thank you for sharing the knowledge ^^
This video was so interesting!1🙏🌻🌱
Thanks!
Thank you for Sharing your tips like video 😎😎♥♥
Thanks for watching 😁
Oh wow! 😮
I discovered that leaving anything other than citrus out, the mice came in. I've blocked everything I can see, but nothing but citrus in the fruit bowl. I need an extra fridge though.
Sounds rough 😬
I've missed you and your vids! UA-cam has seemed to put you at the bottom of the algorithm 😟 anyway love all of your videos I've learned so much. I do get your emails 💚🌿💚
That’s weird. YT works in mysterious ways
Yet another reason to hate bananas!
PLEASE could you talk about why 🌳 olive 🫒 trees 🌳 drop leaves like mad?
Is that a begonia in the background?😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Yep
I have 2 Plants within 2 foot of a counter I keep bananas on. these 2 plants seem to get yellowing leaves more than any other plant I have?? For now I moved the Bananas about 10 foot away to see if it helps at all....
Avocados to turn them black quick, put them in a paperbags
Can you please make a video about your begonias? Your seems to be thriving but mine is nearly dead xd
One of the Amazon reviewers said she cuts open the packet when it's expired & sprinkles it in her plants like fertilizer...that can't be right can it!??
Wouldn’t have thought so
hi mr sheffield , i have a very very small cutting of tradescantia , i had it in water & then kind of neglect it & all the water dried out but it clung onto life & it’s STILL ALIVE! i watched some of your other videos about them & i put it in dirt last night. do you have anymore tips for it to thrive & grow better? you said water when dry correct? & indirect sun? ALSO, it’s so small it’s in a medicine shot glass , so i repot when the vines get longer or when its roots develop more? it has the tiniest root.
You can’t go wrong with trad. Hard to kill. Water when the soil is dry and put in bright light and you’ll be fine
You could cover it with a cloche, I use the ones intended for picnic tables to keep in humidity without blocking light.
My bananas are in the freezer 😁
Does cigarrete smoke also harm plants? :/
I’m a smoker and I sit right next to my plants and they are thriving. It doesn’t bother them at all.
Not sure. Can’t imagine it’s great
Yes, the smoke blocks the pores and dirties the leaves, interfering with photosynthesis
Imagine the yellow scrim on a smoker's walls but covering the plants' breathing, reproductive structures and food production
@@Faesharlyn I wipe my leaves weekly, so they stay clean. We should all keep our leaves clean whether we smoke or not.
So the lesson learned is - eat more chocolate.
😁
Glad I'm on keto ha ha 😂
feeew i'm glad i don't eat bananas 😗
or just move the bananas away from the plants, leaving them where they are because they were there first
Me: sat here, wondering why my golden pothos hanging above my kitchen counter is going droopy and yellow 😢
Mr. Sheffield 🦸🏻♂️
My golden pothos is less than a metre from my bananas. I buy organic which have a waxy paper on the stem and they ripen much slower. I wonder if that’s the difference. I just moved a little succulent bc the pothos is taking over the area. I also replaced my pot lights with grow bulbs, which would also make a big difference.
Solution..... NEVER buy or eat Avacados. 😂😂😂 🤢🤮
😅
Sainsburrys flower shelf just next to fruits lol
