you can also get no-chlorine water from a dehumidifier or rainwater
I just use bottle caps or jar lids to lift the inner pot.
Added advantage is you can fit the edge of the inner pot with the decorative pot.
I do the same in raising plants up, but instead of gravel, I use a little restaurant 'take out' cup upside down (like a side serving of sauce might come in, minus the lid of course). Far less messy 😉 Waiting on spring in 🇨🇦 after 'false' spring a few weeks ago....😅

I elevate too, with the plastic screw caps from bottles of soda or water. They're the perfect height for most of my pots. On those that need to go a bit higher, I glue several caps together in layers. Depending on the diameter of the cache-pot, I glue 3, 5, 7 or more caps together in a layer, then stack those layers inside the cache-pot. They last for dog's ages and are easy to remove to clean the inside of the cache-pot. Plus, ghey are really sturdy and can take a lot of weight!
Oh yeah, and they're free too!
@@Dwynfal OMG! I do the exact same thing with bottle caps! I also use wine corks and even pennies that I glue together until I have the EXACT height I want.

Hockey pucks, for bigger plants. And almost anything else for smaller plants-old school erasers, those plastic cell packs that outdoor garden annuals come in (crush them into a ball).
Those watering spikes are golden. I put them in empty, and then put a bottle only when I go on vacation.

I wonder what there is to hate here. What are they saying? Well, when you need to hate I guess any reason is valid.
I use self watering pots and pon-like mineral substrates. Everything is fine, even the ZZ.
I take out the inner pot and water over the sink. Once the water drains and no more risk of standing water, then I put it back in pot. But I have far fewer plants than Mr. S... and only takes a little time on a lazy morning.
Overwatering is a common problem. I went on a week vacation watered my plants, came back 7 days later and all plants were fine so I know many plants don't need to be watered so often.
I’ve been following you for a while and have a bit of a “problem” with planty videos ;-) I don’t come across new tips as often these days…today I did!!!

I want to share a tip I have been using for a couple of years now. I thought of this a while back because every plant I ever buy from a big box store here in the US, Home depot, is ALWAYS water logged! And I mean water LOGGED!! I literally took the pot out of it's cache pot in the store and emptied out over an inch of water on to the floor!! I also bought a hanging basket of Tradiscantia Zebrina that had no holes in it, but weighed a ton! They both were in risk of certain death if I did nothing. So I took about 5 or 6 paper towels and neatly folded them up and put them underneath the first pot. Then I pushed the pot firmly into the stack, and waited. After about 20 minutes the paper towels were soaked. I got 5 or 6 more, folded them and pressed the pot again in firmly. I had to do this like 4 or 5 times with this pot. The hanging basket had to be taken out of that pot to be put on the stack of towels. I used almost a full roll of paper towels on these 2 plants but I have saved MANY plants doing this.

Since I've started watching your channel, I have switched to pots with drainage holes and bought your moisture meter. Voila...my plants are much happier! Plus, I have stopped killing them with my love, I mean overwatering tendancies. 😊 We thank yoooooouuuu! 😁🪴🌱

just bottom water by soaking and draining. Putting gravel in the bottom of the decorative pot just delays the inevitable for inexperienced plant friends. That water meter thing has been a godsend for me, got it months ago and no losses. thx for suggesting Mr Sheffield. 🙂
My plants have really taken off since I bought soil conditioner (per your recommendation)! I had previously purchased a water meter, but it didn’t work. It always said dry, no matter how wet it was. I finally decided to try your recommendation and now my plants are looking and feeling fine. Thank you!

I tried a water meter in the past, never showed anything but dry too- turned out it was just bad. Later found out the company just re-labeled them, so who knows what quality. I did buy the one in the video and it's really great- it works!

A little tip, just because a plant is wilted doesn’t mean it’s dry, could be root rot. 😊
yes, the main reason is roots can't pull water to the leaves.

I love all your helpful tips and thorough explanations. Thanks for your content and your time. I am limited to a few tried and true easy care plants that thrive on simple techniques. As a minimal, decor conscious person I have an aversion to cluttering up the house with gadgets and gizmo's. Humidifiers, grow lights, watering hoses etc while functional aren't practical in the decor sense. Any plant that requires more than basic food, water and sunlight in ordinary household conditions doesn't belong in my home. Luckily, you provide a lot of necessary advice for me to find just such plants. :)

I play a drinking game where any time I'm called "my plant friend" I take a shot.
A moisture meter is your best friend. It has no doubt saved my plants many times. I have some of those terra cotta spikes. They work pretty well as long as you have a long neck bottle. I use them on my outdoor plants when I go away for more than a few days. I have moss around my orchid and bromeliad to discourage moisture loss. Stress Coat is really helpful if you have really hard water like I do. Thanks for another great video! (Now I want a snake plant in water.)

I wonder if indoor herbs would also do well, once established, being moved to just water and a non-soil medium?
I started a bunch of outdoor plants inside the last couple of months. Most of them are outside now, but they turned into absolute magnets for fungus gnats. So there’s a few still hanging around my indoor herbs-and my husband is not fond of the smell of the cider vinegar traps I currently have out.
As I have commented before- save your plants and collect rain water for them! I go thru about 3 gals a week watering my plants. Saves them and I save a lot of money.
Not everyone has that luxury. In Phoenix, we're lucky to be able to fill 3 gallons of rain water in a year.

Honestly none of my plants ever look like they were thirsty until they start changing colors and dying and stuff so I just have to use the moisture meter TM that mr. Sheffield promoted back in the day. Ever since I've recommended one to anyone with multiple plants and who struggles to keep them all adequately moisturised.
Personally I'm really good at having the plants drown to death while their soil is being pulled away from the sides of the pot from dryness.
On the other hand I really like having the under plates with small raised rims and doing the underwatering through those if I'm not certain. You don't get the water reserve soaking the roots, but the soil can still wick up the water in the necessary amounts but not too much. Really slowed down me killing the plants with accidental watering mistakes if I didn't pay attention with moisture meter. I'm lucky in that sense that the roots haven't grown through the drainage holes yet or piled up at the bottom, probably because they grow so slowly in this lack of light.
RainPoint seems like a great gadget, my only question would be, given how IoT (internet of things) is everywhere these days, how's the security. IoT gadgets tend to be very volatile and riddled with security hazards or are acting like a peeping tom themself at times. Due to lot of startups being eager with the features and less informed on the security risks, or being owned by organisations with interest. The privacy and security is rarely disclosed.

It’d be great if the automatic watering system incorporated a moisture meter, as well. Otherwise, it’s just a gamble knowing if the plants need water or not. And if by chance, they all need exactly the same amount of water at the exact same time. I love your channel and usually buy from your links - but this one just doesn’t line up with what you’ve been teaching. ❤
I mean if you're not away for three months the plants will be fine for a bit, in nature rainfall also doesn't only happen when the plants need water. I think for the duration of a normal holiday, this will be totally fine
I know, why I put my plants into Seramis, a clay granulate that retains the water and does not clog like standard soil, at least for the first repotting. Maybe that's why my plants thrive despite my overall neglect, ranging from forgetting to water, nearly drowning them and sometimes putting too much fertilizer into the water. Well, not all plants survived that, but at least only the plants (I didn't really like anyways) died.
I even propagated two monsteras by just putting cuttings with aerial roots into that granulate, filling the pot nearly completely with water and let it sit that way overnight so the granulate could get well saturated, before emptying the excess water. I should do that again, as one of them started crawling horizontally and also catched some aphids on the lower leaves, I just take the healthier leaves, clean them and put them into a fresh pot. This time with a pole in the back. By the way, thanks for the information that these plants need support.

Mr. Sheffield, I’m fairly new to your channel. I absolutely love it! Your knowledge and humor are wonderful. You also convinced me very quickly to get the moisture meter you have in your Amazon store. I received it today. My husband and I went about checking all the plants. I was surprised to see what was actually dry and wasn’t. I just watered all of them too a few days ago and I wasn’t expecting but a certain one to be dry. Nope, several were dry. They got their drink. Also I got brave enough to prune my snake plant. It looks great now. And I have 6 leaves that I took off and I have them in a jar of water with some pebbles. Crossing my fingers they do well! I’d love to see you do a video on aloe because I seem to barely keep it alive yet it is sickly looking all the time. The other is jade trees I’d like to see a video on.

Btw there are also watering spikes like the "bördy" which might be a bit more aesthetic than a wine bottle ^^ they are quite expensive though
Also with the rainpoint set up: shouldn't the output of the spikes be different if you split it and the first piece goes to a plant and the other is split again? Since the tubing is the same diameter the volume it can transport stays the same but one is being split in half twice.

Moisture meter is best and cheapest way or if want go real cheap then wooden Chinese chop stick to check bit deeper because i had avocado who died for over watering but i checked with my finger every week and all other plants needed water every week and on top some 2-3cm it was dry enough but when it died then something from top 5-6cm it was dry but below that it was soaking wet and i remember it took so little amount water and water came out of bottom and i was so confused like why because it was dry on top so yeah. Invest in moisture meter and thats best life saver for your plants.

again, what kind of water do you use for your carnivorous plants? Is it enough to just remove chlorine for the water or is there more to do?
No you need to use distilled or rainwater
Would you recommend any other brand instead of api stress coat? I cant get that here in Slovakia and i think my zebrinas would love that. From my understanding you just need the conditioner to remove the chlorine and chloramine and not to adjust ph levels of tap water to make it soft? Or does stress coat do that too?
Doesn't alter the ph. There are other brands. API is just the one i use
In Europe we've got decorative ceramic, plastic and composite pots with drain holes and matching dishes, some with with bolts so the pot can be raised over it, I don't understand how England, out of all countries doesn't offer them.

I know you use stress coats, but I found one called Tetra Aqua Safe in my store. Would that also work? It says it makes tap water safe and removes chlorine. I'm just asking before I mix it up and kill my plants or something. Thanks.
