My plants are my pets. Caring for them, propagating them, researching them, and just looking at them make me almost as happy as watching Sheffield UA-cam videos. I always had at least one plant in my office when I was working to remind me there’s more to life than just concrete.
That is awesome!
So well said! 😊
My plants are so therapeutic for me!
Yes! I say that same thing. My plants are my pets! 🥂🪴
I’m on the autism spectrum, plants are one of my obsessions. From the sensory stimulation through repeating the same routine and satisfying the needs on gathering information about them, they are a key to the happy and comfortable life to me. I can turn any conversation into a plant talk and I get frustrated with people who are utterly uninterested in plants.
Great stuff 👍
Me too!! Exactly why I love these videos, educational to feed the info gathering and funny to um idk feed the funny bone
same!! glad to see others in the same boat. 🥹 plants are so AWESOME! 🧡🌿
Seeing him sleep with his moisture meter always cracks me up. No episode is complete without the moisture meter.
😂
I use it now all the time, I have killed many a plant from overwatering
I'm a science teacher at a youth residential treatment center. My classroom is FILLED with plants, and it's so much calmer in my room compared to others! I feel like it does so much to help these kids with emotional dysregulation. There's so much interest, I may start a plant club!
Like it!
you should totally do it!!! that would be so awesome! caring for plants can definitely help them learn responsibility without putting anything at risk!
-i always get sad when things don’t work out with a plant, but it’s a WHOLE other story with animals. kids shouldn’t have the whole responsibility of a pet, but some people don’t get that lol. plants would be such a good replacement, once they can handle caring for a plant then they should be able to get a pet 🥲🧡🌿
For a few years I have worked in the middle of an office, there are a couple of plants in the windows, but I couldn’t even see those. Now I changed teams and landed an ace window corner! It has a radiator too so I brought the plants that were not thriving at home and need more light and higher temperature. It’s my little plant hospital, makes me look forward to go to work to see them ❤
Like the sound of that!
When I moved out of my parents house, I was really struggling with loneliness and getting used to living on my own. Getting a lot more houseplants (mostly ferns) and trying to keep them alive really made my place feel like home for the first time!!
That's great
Thank You Mr Sheff! As I stare at my 202 plants, I always take a breath of relief lol. Now I know why and why my guest never want to leave 😅.
I've got a maranta, dracaena, and spider plant on my desk at work! Several people have commented on how they enjoy them!
Nice 👌
I love the smell when I open up my soil mix storage bin. It's like being in the forest after a spring rain!
Very true
I suffer from chronic pain, which keeps me from being able to leave the house much. Bringing nature inside via houseplants def improves my mood, and the act of caring for them has the added benefit of light exercise!
Great stuff 👍
I feel really proud of my plants. I sit and admire them and feel happy about how good they look. I take good care of them and they bring me a lot of joy.
I find it very calming to tend to my plants, even when they are being fussy. At the end of a stressful day they always make me feel better, tho I should clarify that is without smoking them!
soooo true, and i love your humor! 🤣🤣🧡🌿
Our office looks like a tropical garden with many plants, it is the only good thing about that office though :D
Yes.. pottering around your home or garden with plants, looking, touching and sorting them out making them look good and tidy is very therapeutic 🙂
My barbershop has around 30 plants that I care for. They are massive and stunning and always the topic of conversation 💚
That is awesome!
I was early retired 5 years ago. I took over the plant care at home and have gone from having chronic cluster headaches to having episodic cluster headaches. Once the next bout of headaches are over, I have considered joining the workforce again - this time with something plant related
Sorry to hear your plight. Sounds nasty
(house)plants gave me new purpose in life, I'll spare you the sob story but I've been unable to work, been at home for over a year now. It surely reduced stress and gave me something to look forward to! Getting too much in a short time while you haven't figured out your plants yet can be pretty stressful though 😂 took me a while to calm down but now it's all good
If u need a plant loving homie I got u fam
@@wesleyschooley4454 found some already, thanks though :)
Glad it’s helping and hope you get more luck soon
@@SheffieldMadePlants Thanks! I should be able to recover and get back to work in time :)
Love this video. My family and friends think I have a green thumb but the truth is I love gardening. It's so peaceful and fun to see flowers growing indoors and out.
Wonderful!
At first i started to take care of my late mother's plants and over time i became more interested in plants that i bought or adopted new ones, started grewing some herbs indoors. It helped me mentally, gave me some sort of addition purpose.
That's great
I've added 6 easy indoor plants (ZZ,pothos etc) in my 15m2 office and yes, it helps in many ways!
Great!
Thanks for uploading on Saturdays, these videos are perfect for my morning coffee!
Thanks for watching 😁
Same ✌️
Richard thank you for this video I really needed to hear this I love my house plants They make me happy My daycare kids like them too. I have gotten a few of my friends into having indoor plants too. Really appreciate your advice with them too ❤😊
Wonderful!
I've added over 20 plants to the lobby of the veterinary clinic that I work at. The clients rave about how wonderful it looks. I also have a little jar (it says "Crazy Dog Mom" on it) of props going on one of the counters. I've definitely been known to send home clippings with some of the clients who are fellow plant lovers. Sometimes the clients even bring me various plant related gifts. Plant people are awesome.
Love that!
Always nice to have more arguments for owning more plants 😁
My plants are literally part of my therapy for chronic pain and mental health. They keep me going.
Mines are as well 🙏🏾
You really inspire us to create something beautiful in our surroundings.
Yes..whenever sad, down and lonely, I always tend to my plants as it lifts my mood always🥰 thank you 🪴
Hi Rich I talk to my 50 year old plants and say "oh the things you have seen and you don't tell all my secrets. Love you in my life You reinforce everything I know. Love you every day. Stay well take care
You rock!
Yes, I could stare at my plants for hours! 😂
I love my plants. When I'm out shopping etc. I actually miss working on my plants. I can't wait to get home. I always have a project I'm working on. After I lost my husband, my plants helped me to deal with the stress, depression, and sadness.
Sorry to hear that
9:36 cracked me up 😂😂😂😂
😁
I am a teacher who brings a lot of work home. Taking a break and looking at my plant collection while working is a break. My only problem may be becoming too involved with them and forgetting my work. 🍀🌴🌿🌵🍃🌳
100% True! Having 5-7 plants in my bedroom really makes a difference. I also believe that they can block noise from outside, even if it's a very subtle difference compared to having no plants at all. I plan on having more plants in the near future in my room. Currently, I mainly have avocado trees or seedlings and 2 mangoes, well 3 mango seedling, but 1 of them wasn't very lucky. Having plants and watching them grow and establish is one of the few things that keep me sane. While it's not always fun watching some plants die from time to time, we need to remember that it's all part of our journey and that we learn from our mistakes. Plants bring me joy, excitement and sometimes surprise me with their resilience, and yes, sometimes disappointment. And taking care of plants takes time, so (in my opinoin) they help you become more patient and have longer attention span.
When it comes to colour, I prefer plants with deep green leaves, I love it when plants are fed and have nitrogen in their leaves. In some ways, they help you think.
Thank you for sharing this with us! I know I haven't commented much, but I've watched every video upload for the last 7, or even 8-9 months.
Thanks for watching 😁
Yep, I reduced the number of plants at work since they were getting so cold on weekends, but I do treat them like pets a home. I even have favorite "children", but mostly love puttering with rearranging or cleaning them off so they can get better light.
Ohh fun fact I used to get really bad seasonal depression than I started growing plants n it's never happened since then
Great stuff 👍
I bought my first few plants nearly 3 years ago to help with stress, which they really did. Now I have just about two dozen pots of succulents and cacti housed on the window sill next to where I study in my dorm room (I'm currently a college student). You have no idea how many times I look back at my succulents and see if there's any small maintenance I can do while I'm studying. I study quite a bit, so I do get burnt out often as a result and those plants really help restore some motivation so I can keep on going. And overall, they just help make my dorm room not so dull with their colors and all.
Procrastination and lack of motivation can really be a problem for college students, so if you are a college student, I totally recommend getting a plant or few because it may help you keep on top of your studies too.
You got it. That is why I have some plants that as you know are 50 years. I shake them a little All my kids are looking great partially because of your help. Look at your home. They know you love them. You aren't giving us bologna. Wish I could send you pics of my kids. I have at least 50 or more. Please take care of yourself. We need you in our homes. Love Billie from USA😇🤗🙂
Same to you!
As long as you have the time to care for them, you can never have too many plants
If i'm anything like you. I would have enjoyed capturing all of the loving my plants footage as well. Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Before I retired, I used to work for Olsson, an engineering firm, who had Z-Z Plants and Fig-leaf Fichus and tall Dracaenas palms everywhere. We had a beautiful downtown office with huge 1" thick store front windows from ceiling to floor, 20 ft ceilings. It was a luxurious office. But I DO NOT miss it. I love being retired. Got my own plants, my desert beauties.
Nice office!
Amen Mr Sheffield ! You are so absolutely right. Gardening is therapeutic for both body and mind. When I take care of my plants I switch to a sort of meditation mode, I feel relieved and grateful. I wonder at the beauty of nature and ooh, it's so rewarding to see them grow and thrive. Thank you !! 💚
Well said!
I care for the plants in the office. Everyone loves them. I always enjoy caring for them.
I got the task of buying plants for the office about 1,5 years ago. was really fun to go to ikea and buy 3 carts full of big plants :D
I have a colleague helping me watering them, but if anything needs some extra love it´s my task. And my windowsill at work is also covered in plants, it always makes me ahpy looking at them.
I just got a plant cabinet at home and every evening and/or morning I just stand in front of it and look at my plant babys.
Great 👍
I'm not terribly surprised about the first thing. Everyone who has a hobby that requires focusing on something and doing with your hands for a while can attest to that indeed it reduces stress. Real versus fake plants doesn't seem that much of a shock either. Like having a pet versus plushie, I'm fairly certain nobody would try to claim a plushie replaces all the effects of a pet.
And seeing the results as well! Caring for a plant and seeing it thrive can be seen as a small victory (or not so small), and any victory is always uplifting.
Which is why I'm wondering about the study on real vs fake plants. I wonder if the participants knew which is which, and also if they had a neutral attitude towards fakes, since any kind of bias would naturally alter the results.
Plants reduce my anxiety. They make me feel happy (unless my favorit plant got yellow leaves 😮)
The saying "Go touch grass" has so many levels now
Hola Mr Sheffield! Would love to see more of your garden, please!
Can confirm. Planting a variety of edible and fragrant plants did improve mood, stress and productivity. Also, they are tasty!
Excellent!
Thank you for this information. I sent it to two family members who are suffering from stress. 😊
Cool 👌
I totally agree with you 😊
7:28 Upgraded from the moisture meter I see!
I have 6 plants in my library/ classroom & I feel more productive & creative.I love taking care of them.
this was awesome & informative....I shall keep it close in case my hubby says: Do you really need another plant? LOL
😁
Beautiful house plants and you take care well more then me😅. I was stressed during covid and I start buying more plants after then.
Totally agree with this. Thanks.
Indoor plants makes me happy and energetic, good mood, specially when plants produce flowers 🌺thank you xx
With dozens of developing bonsai around (from just germinating to moderately mature plants), indoors and out in the yard, there's always something to tinker with or to simply appreciate (especially outside right now ...) when I need to unwind a bit.
Now we can explain head leaf status, big plant = tranquility!
💚💚💚 I can attest to these.
Thanks for another interesting video Mr Sheffield. 😃
Glad you enjoyed it
Yes, I'm a crypto plant carer. I even do it in the charity shop when I see a plant that needs care. Secretly, of course. I've learnt my lesson, people start to think you're a weirdo - all because you just want to improve a plant's life.
As a species we've changed our environment and method of living in only a few thousand years. Evolution hasn't had the time to even begin to adjust our minds/bodies to these new circumstances. I believe this is the cause of most of our disease issues and behavioural problems (along with just too damned many of us). I've been lucky enough to live for a few years in a semi-rural situation and I felt my quality of life to be much better. No, it didn't miraculously cure all my physical and emotional problems, but compared to my previous urban lifestyle, it was a vast improvement. Now that I'm yet again trapped in an urban flat, plants keep me in touch with the real world, and the satisfaction of caring for another living thing.
Very good
Im not the only one i know who used houseplant care as addiction treatment. I get a real good feeling when im looking at my plants, especially when there's new growth!!! Only problem is, im tempted to grow poppies, just gotta not harvest those!
Thanks you for sharing lovely houseplants beautiful and and amazing indoor plants collection
Excellent video Yay
Thanks!
My dogs literally get jealous of my plants because I sing to and talk to them. They are my wee babbies too. ❤ I get so excited when they pop new leaves or blooms- I sorta coach them through it on a day to day basis, tell them how great they're doing, and how happy they make me. They just completed a study that proved they have feelings and pass them on to each other using florescent light. It coincides with other studies done on water (look up Dr Emoto, he did an amazing study with ice crystals). It basically proved they can communicate, and that humans can and do effect them with spoken word in positive and negative ways. Make sure to tell them planty-pies how happy they make you!! ❤ I name mine once they go into a permanent pot, lol I don't give a dang who thinks I'm nuts!
That's wild
Thank u for sharing 😊
I totally agree !!
PS my alacatia has sent our two new leaves already. Not good of spelling.. All others seem to think it is spring. New leaves mean I am doing what you tell us to do. Thank good I found your channel.
Sounds great!
Now I wanna see Sheffield ! I mean .. Sheffield
I often times use #planttherapy if I post a plant post on instagram. I definitely agree that plants can boost your mood. I call myself a plant mom and tell my plants they are rockstars all the times, lol. Am I the only one who finds lavender and eucalyptus to be make you feel awful and give you a headache...?
I started caring for plants because it lowers my stress, I repot when I'm in some sort of crisis emotionally, I had a death in the family and my plants really gave me a way to stay busy and lower my stress. Everytime i walk into my plant room, the smell of all the plants hits me and I love it, starting to smell like a tropical forest. The only issue is every time I go in there, I get so distracted staring at the plants that I forget what I was doing.
Same here!
This is a great one!
Thanks!
Just before lockdown we were told all plants at the office had to be removed because they would bring bugs. Then lockdown came and they transitioned us to work from home permanently. Thank goodness because my at home jungle keeps me calm when the stress kicks in.
What the bugs would spread the virus??
@@SheffieldMadePlants 😂 I think that deep down they did not want us to make the working environment “too comfortable” so they came up with that lame bugs explanation.
Thank you : )
There is no limit for me to have these green babies, I am up to adopt more and more 😅
Get to the shops 😁
Mood relief and increased productivity - by these standards you must be one of the happiest and productive people in England. 😂❤❤
But seriously, I couldn’t imagine living without plants just as I couldn’t imagine living without my cats or, even my bf. Love your videos, mate! ❤
Also at 3:41 - there isn’t any plant on top of that tall cupboard?? Honestly shocking. But it is a rather tall spot to get up to and as a short gal, I couldn’t put anything I’d have to muck with up there and expect it to live. 😅
And finally I hope you try eating your purple shamrock or including it in certain foods as it’s quite tasty. No joke!
I know right! That space looks sparse. Just a bit too dark up there
Unfortunately you cannot grow lavender indoor for making you more relaxed buuuuut, you can use some lavender oil, only the oil form the angustifolia type!
I definitely feel less stressed when I'm just doing the daily care for my plants. But in spring time, when all my 25-30 bonsai trees needs replanting all at once, it's a little stressful. Because I'm already worn out from work, and just wanna sleep, basically. :P
Yeah good shout
A very pleasant video, thank you! Would you happen to have links to any of the studies you mentioned, I'd love to give some of them a read!
I’ll have to hunt them out
Waw... Kreatif ull
My niece started to purchase and care for plants but it was difficult due to one of my two cats who kept knocking them down onto the floor.😣 sadly she gave up. 💔💔
My best friends are the potted friends❤
I like snake plants more when there are a bunch of them together, like in that office scenario. Who knew
I'm glad science is enabling my addiction
Indeed 😁
The fake vs real is interesting BC when I'm in one of our stores they have very real looking and even feeling fake plants but I immediately see it and I just know it's fake no matter how spot on they make it. They sell real plants as well and sometimes they have them as decorative items instead of fake and I can tell those as well.
There is just something I think most of us plant ppl connect with when it comes to the living aspect of the plants. I would rather have a plant that's half dead than a fake one!
Also, as someone whose surrounded in plants all the time since I stay at home and don't work, there are things I solidly notice, the plants move, sometimes they even jump like they're tangled on themselves and need to jerk away to get that leaf where they want it! Seeing how my monstera deliciosa and Thai look normal and then they sort of stretch their newest leaf to look like it's looking up at the sky and it leans a bit then the new leaf begins to form. They're all so animated and tell their own stories, not just "im wilted and parched" but so many little things!
Also, the extra light needed. I know darn well if I had a house full of fake plants I wouldn't have lights on them which means my home would be darker and feel more conducive to a nap!
I most certainly would enjoy not having the mess plants give in the form of soil BC it pushed out new growth and the soil that was in the way, or dried leaves, mites, friendly little gnats who just went to look at me close up, 100 extra grow pots and cover pots that need stored, my extra soil, fertilizer and so on. It takes up a lot of extra space as a hobby!
Very true. Having lights everywhere cos of plants brightens the place up nicely
@@SheffieldMadePlants esp with the Sansi bulbs! They're like having windows open or pinching a hole in the wall and getting the natural light lol 😄
Im not see the link you shared at the end of video...Link please? :)
I've had plants in my room/apartments since I was maybe... 7 or something. My mum always filled the house with various plants, and I am now doing the same. Love caring for them, and they feel like their own little personalities. My Desert Rose is the only one I still, after several years, don't get. XD We're not seeing eye to eye. It keeps dropping leaves and refuse to flower. I either give it too much water, or too little. And it's never happy with the same amount all year round. :/ The picky little pooper. My Begonia Rexes and I go well together now, but the first few I tried, were not so happy. They took some time to learn. I have a bunch of orchids, which are doing fine apart from that they got false uuuhhh... that's not the English name. Tetranychidae maybe? Small tiny tiny tiny s**ts I can't poison, but have to keep treating with neemoil to sloooowly get rid of. They spread from one orchid I got to almost all of them. :( Took a while before I noticed, and now they're hell to deal with. And I also tend to keep all the plants I'm given, because I just can't throw away a living plant. XD Also, we have plants at my school, in every room. It's kinda nice.
Hi, I love your videos. I have a couple plants, but I get scared repotting them as I don't want to damage the roots. I have massive alocasia that has outgrown its pot in just 3 months! Could you give some tips on repotting large plants if that's possible.
What’s your concern? Repotting won’t damages anything
what about a video for your garden, Mr Sheffield?
That'd be interesting. Hope he does one day
I work in a healing office with a Chiropractor who used to be a horticulturist at the local botanical garden. Our office looks like your house (and our houses look a lot like your house, too!). Our patients ALWAYS tell us how much they love our plants and how calm they feel in our space. It helps us deal with the stress of long hours and managing so many nervous systems in one place. 🪴🥰🌴
Nice!
how many plants does it take before your heart just stops altogether
The children yearn for the farms (and mines).
Well that’s what the doctor ordered for me to get smarter. Actually, it might be too late but I’m still trying, so what do you do when you’re around your plants breathe deep inhale the smartness from the plants? Anything would help.
Yes deep breathes when walking around.
Well, I just bought a fern I definitely don't have the space for, as a treat for being so productive today. This video arrived at the right time. The thing is, I don't have any tall plants. Oh, no! Whatever shall I do now...?
I wonder 🤔😂
@@SheffieldMadePlants I've got my eye on a tall Musa from IKEA. It's only thirteen euros, comes in a 21 cm pot, and is 90 cm high. Luckily I just happened to have ordered a plant stand that is 70 cm high. How fortuitous!
I love your videos, and you have taught me many things about house plants. In an entertaining way to boot!
That being said, I am sorely disappointed that you talk about scientific studies without citing your references.
Please please PLEASE give us the links to where you fou d your information. Otherwise, you risk spreading misinformation, even though you are well meaning .
As a biologist, it's probably a bit of a work related injury, lol. But it would be helpful for anyone wanting to know more, if nothing else.
The plant sniffing B roll haha.. makes you happy while looking like a creep
😂
Stress……watching this after I’ve spent 30mins moving house plants so I can light the log fire while the wife rolls her eyes and shakes her head. …. My plant friends. 👍
Cute 😍
