    I’ve had mine for a year, brown spots are just normal, if it’s thirsty it will curl inward. The ones that are purple on the underside are chatoyant on the top, you can dust them to help shine . Here in oregon they’re not too common at retailers . I paid $17 for anice big healthy and it’s booming in winter it gets pretty cold, and gets up to 75-80 F in summer; but it does fine in both extremes

    Thank you some much for these videos! I bought a Calathea white star recently. In the shop they said that it is a very easy care plant. Then I searched the internet, and basically EVERYONE threatened me that this plant is the worst for beginners, and in general very hard to maintenance. Thanks to your video (and other videos as well) I am much calmer now - because I actually have something to start with. No other channel in UA-cam was so informative! Now I know that I have a good chance to take care after my Calathea even though I'm only at the beginning of my plant parenting journey

    I just bought a few of these from a local grower that specializes in them. They recommend keeping them in a dish of water all the time. I have done that and they are really thriving! Lots of new beautiful leaves! I do live in Florida where it is VERY humid. Thought this might help. Love your videos! Keep them coming!!! ❤

Not only for my calathea but also because it has taught me how very differently my plants water needs are depending on their pot, what the pot is made of, etc. I've always been one to have "water day" since I've mostly been an outdoor gardener but indoor plants are very different.

After watching your video I have moved it to a space 4 metres away from the window, with a saucer with water underneath it. It does seem happier, still no browning of the leaves or any problems. its leaves now point to the heavens, but it looks like your large Calathea does the same thing. Hope this is a good sign.

    I’ve had a rattlesnake calathea for two years and only just started getting browning leaves because it’s winter and the house is extremely dry. I’ve started spraying the leaves with water since I don’t have a humidifier.

    • @irairod5160
      @irairod5160 Рік тому +2

      Oh, no, be careful! Calatheas (and Alocasias) need AIR humidity, but get sick when there's moisture on the leaves too often or too long. You can very easily kill your rattlesnake by misting it and making it vulnerable to fungus-bacteria-rot-gnats. A very large pebble tray would be a preferable measure, as would be bringing your Calathea to the bathroom when you take a shower and leaving it there for a couple of hours afterward. Another thing you could try--if a proper humidifier is out of the question--is raising the thermostat by a few degrees since warmer air holds better to humidity. Even a tabletop fountain or an electronic mister (the kind sold for essential oils) placed nearby would be better than wetting the leaves.

    • @CampingforCool41
      @CampingforCool41 Рік тому +1

      @@irairod5160 believe me I don’t have to worry about fungus because it’s winter here and the air is dry as a bone due to heaters running. The leaves dry off very quickly and imo it looks like the moisture has been helping. If they start looking worse I’ll stop but for now it’s what I’m trying.

    • @irairod5160

      @@CampingforCool41 Sounds like you found what works best in your environment! I have a humidifier (and fan) dedicated solely to my plants in the Marantaceae and Arum families because I know that, if I misted the leaves directly, I would lose all of them in a couple of weeks. Winter where I am is cold and dry but I keep the house at 70 degrees around the clock and run the humidifier at least 12 hours---for the plants, for my skin, and for overall health. @@nicoleperron3315 Oh I didn't know top watering does that. Aldo didn't know about Calathea not liking cold water. Both good to know. Thank you very much for sharing!

    I went from not enough crispy and dry, to edges that are brown, but not crispy. Too much water?

      Could be. How wet is the soil?

      I water good and let it soak up from the roots 2x week and then it can fully drain. My house is very dry. I was doing it only 1x per week and that is when it was crispy. @@SheffieldMadePlants

      Mine too and there are no pests. I’ve watched tons of calathea videos and they all only talk about browning edges and tips never middles. Could it be forced air heating draft or morning sun in east window?

      @MilwaukeeLesa Рік тому +1

      @@ladyelainefairchild3546 I have no clue. Mine is a hot mess now and nothing like the plant I brought home: I feel bad. Mine has been in a west facing window, just back a bit. I too have forced air and am in Milwaukee Wisconsin, so it’s COLD here! I won’t be getting that plant again! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️😁

      May i ask if this happened mostly to the new growth and it has paper structure and thinner than the older foliage?

    Quite a bit less dynamic (and a bit more hair! 😁) than in your more recent videos. Maybe your need to re-do this one 🙃
