Nothing was as cool as the FL9. What a design.

The Empire Service is a higher-speed train service operated by Amtrak within the state of New York in the United States. The brand name originated with the New York Central Railroad in 1967. Trains on the line provide frequent daily service along the 460-mile (740 km) Empire Corridor between New York City and Niagara Falls, New York via Albany, the state capital.

My dad very well could've been piloting one of these as he was an engineer out of Alb-Ren from 1986-2013 and he worked this route as much as possible throughout the '90s (no more being on the spare board, no more overnighters to Cleveland! Could actually be home to see the family at reasonable hours!). He snuck us up into the cab so many times (got to see RTLs, FL-9s, F40s) and it was always mindblowing to my little kid brain.... ride in the front of these big loud impressive vehicles AND we get to explore NYC for the day?? Such good memories.

@@1990sRailfan Oh yeah, he's still very much alive and volunteers as an engineer on a scenic rail line in the Catskills once in a while. And I'm gonna watch every one of those videos... my dad has zero nostalgia for his railroading days but I do :)

This takes me way back. I would've been 5 years old and probably just starting to ride the trains up and down the Hudson River to Rhinecliff. Miss the FL9s and Turboliners a lot.

Nothing's really changed except for some of the columns are no longer standing and obvious wear and tear. Great footage!

I guess the 90’s were Amtrak’s strobe phase?

I remember strobes atop F40PHs as far back as 1984. I think strobes came with the F40s as delivered.

1990s Railfan Also the early order of the Genesis P40’s came with strobes.

I just saw a video of Rhinecliff filmed in recent years, things are looking really decrepit up there, they looked a little better in the 90s. Well, it was cool to see the Turboliner and FL9s.

Haven't been up that way in years. Thanks for stopping by Mike, waiting for your next layout update.
