When he starts the main solo towards the end any soul is able to witness what mastery is about. He s performing saxophone on strings plus outside notes and rhythmuc sophistication. Anyone noodling down the blues scale better take a bow... kudos to Robben, THE genuine inspiration of my guitar fancy
I have a '63 es335 sunburst with the stop tailpiece. I run it through and old 50 watt Marshall head with a couple of pedals. That thing will sing a note FOREVER.
what a nice groove,, nice chord changes, smooth,, Travis is a darn good bassist! Very smooth lines! Very tight overall, what a group, Robben is the only other blues/rock/jazz guitarist that delivers the shivers for me, thanks for posting this!
I admit I was a bit shocked at how loud Robben likes it...he sounds so clean...I saw these three just on their return that year and while I didn't mind, you CAN"T ignore them in any way. A serious 3-headed monster that show was!
Blues Deluxe showcased Robben Ford at least a decade ago. I recently rediscovered him listening to some old tapes. All three are fantastic musicians in this video.
Yes, Larry gave the 'paul to Robben a few years back. It's a shame that back in the early 1970's they didn't do some touring and do a few records together, when they both were the hottest trend setters around back in LA. Robben actually was playing incredible jazz/rock/fusion licks, saxophone based licks actually, as far back as 1971, and if you get a hold of his live recording from around 1972 or so, you'll see exactly what I mean,, I mean,,, MEAN!!!! WOW!!!!
Robben Ford my man,this is Blues with a Capitol B, you hear he's a great Fusion-Jazz man as well in his note choice, this makes this music so darn interesting. Great feel and incredible tone from this fine Es-335 model,fantastic,very inspiring,Vic.
This song is amazing! by an amazing trio. nothing to criticize here. Just learned this song for a new jazz/funk/blues band, and I will take this over a 1/4/5 blues anyday!!
Ive watched this 100 times, and just noticed that hes clearly disappointed with someone off stage. Especially from the beginning up to the solo. Still an awesome recording
sacredgeometry If you give me your email address, I will send you the transcription. I didn't do the full solo, I only transcribed the stuff that makes him sound like Robben Ford.
@trabisou So, it wasn't YOU Misssssster Ford looked mad at, at around 0.46, and at about 1.52. I was a bit confused at first when I thought it was you, cos you sounded on the money. Sadowsky and Aggie (I read in one of the comments) - a match made in heaven! Peace bro.
Tengo ese DVD y no entendí bien que pasó al comienzo de la canción que enoja tanto a Robben.. Alguien puede sacarme la duda. Gracias y Saludos desde Uruguay.
@DrThorondor Lots of scales. Some pentatonic, minor, mixo, chromatic, and a bunch of other non diatonic stuff. He follows the chords a lot with his soloing.
@JOHNNYG99X I don't think it is at the bass player but the soundman regarding the monitors. @ 0.35 you see him raising his thumb like he wants his monitor or amp louder. Then looked mad as he probably wasn't paying attention lol!!!!!!!
i love the way he plays when he is being soulful, hate to say it and i know what people are going to say but it just gets too jazzy in the end, dosent make sense to me...ehhh still love the guy
i understand what it is, i dont like how it sounds. i can identify it yes, but just becuase it in theory can be defiend dose not mean i like it. i think its too robotic, more soul should be put (in my taste) into the feel and be slowed down. you can go out of key just know when to do it. (in my taste of couse)
eh to make you understand i like more melodic, feel on the tone and not so much on how meany keys you can fit into a chord and so forth, how could anyone explain this? lol
Melody is in the eye of the beholder. The history of all musics has been to advance or expand the language of what is considered melodic;whether you're talking classical or jazz. That exploration is the greatest joy, as I see it, of being a musician. To understand it is the responsibility of a fan of music. Music is meant to challenge. Without that challenge, it is mere entertainment.
@trabisou Hey Travis, big fan of yours and your dads, along with Robben of course!! If you get real bored, let me know what you think of my videos / Robben cover stuff. Be Well!!!!
Interesting thing is, after stepping in, um, er, through the thread, it became even more evident how much more enjoyable it is to listen to Robben singing, than it was to yawn at his opinionated yammering.
...I'm afraid he's not a singer like Bo Didley or Muddy Waters. Singing it's a serious matter that could undermine your production. I's not just moving your mouth between one solos and the other. Robben Ford he's a great marvellous guitar player but should understand this. Jimmy Page never pretended to be Robert Plant but looks what the 2 togheter have done man. You must understand what your role is ....that's all :-)
When he starts the main solo towards the end any soul is able to witness what mastery is about. He s performing saxophone on strings plus outside notes and rhythmuc sophistication. Anyone noodling down the blues scale better take a bow... kudos to Robben, THE genuine inspiration of my guitar fancy
Robben's trio is awesome, and that drummer kicks ass
Great trio. Toss is one of the best, and this group plays the music as it should be played.

Such non-traditional phrasing. Love it.
this trio is the bomb!
I admit I was a bit shocked at how loud Robben likes it...he sounds so clean...I saw these three just on their return that year and while I didn't mind, you CAN"T ignore them in any way.
A serious 3-headed monster that show was!
Always dig Robben in trio setting. Love this track!
FANTASTIC LIVE CD
Blues Deluxe showcased Robben Ford at least a decade ago. I recently rediscovered him listening to some old tapes. All three are fantastic musicians in this video.
Tos Panos lays down the nastiest grooves!!! Bravo...
One word. Classy. Amazing tone and feel
Robben Rocks!!!

I saw these same three guy's in vegas, man!! What a freakin trio. Gotta go see Robben again, truly amazing
Robben Ford my man,this is Blues with a Capitol B, you hear he's a great Fusion-Jazz man as well in his note choice, this makes this music so darn interesting. Great feel and incredible tone from this fine Es-335 model,fantastic,very inspiring,Vic.
Exactly! Al Pacino! Man of many talents ;-)
This song is amazing! by an amazing trio. nothing to criticize here. Just learned this song for a new jazz/funk/blues band, and I will take this over a 1/4/5 blues anyday!!
This guy is tuned the fuck in. Give your life to music and this is what you fucking get. A fucking Genius!
Wow! Rhythm section rocks!
Boy, that's some talent on that stage!
I was there! Great guitarist, great music!
God I love Toss Panos damn he's badass
This is such a good tune.
Nice catch. Feedback is a big part of life when you play those Gibson blues boxes with the f holes.
fabulous guitar playing, who could ask for more?
Toss Panos!! awesomeeeee!! :D
🙏🏼💕👏🏻good question.
nice atypical solo, not your average blues guitar, lots of sweet jazz sensibility
woaw,great rhytmsection.
Love it!!
Ive watched this 100 times, and just noticed that hes clearly disappointed with someone off stage. Especially from the beginning up to the solo. Still an awesome recording
I noticed that too... There's a sound guy working on it behind the bass rig... Robben looks pretty pissed off tbh
@GalaCruse2012
He is . I was lucky enough to see him live in Italy with his father's band.
Man he can play ....
Master!!
top stuff
Travis Carlton(Larry's son) has a lot going for his playing. What a great trio.
nice ! です.
Sensacional
@gasforus nice catch. Looking closer i totally saw him signaling. Also now makes sence with the feedback at the beginning.
yep that was pretty tight right there
Haha!! That´s really good!!
I don't know about the 335 but the goldtop LP he often plays is actually LC's on permanent loan. That's Travis Carlton bass.
Tasty!
This is the shit! His lead/ solo is so fucking compelling. Listen.
The Alan Holdsworth of Blues.
3:23 this lick is soooooo god damn tasty. I cant hear some of the notes as they are grace notes ... but I will persevere
It's weird I transcribed this exact lick yesterday. Glad to know I am not the only one.
boradelic Any help would be appreciated :)
sacredgeometry If you give me your email address, I will send you the transcription. I didn't do the full solo, I only transcribed the stuff that makes him sound like Robben Ford.
boradelic I cant figure out how to private message you but thank you so much for the offer.
boradelic Hey man can I have the transcription of the lick too? :)
@CommBreakDown
Travis uses an Aguilar DB751
@trabisou So, it wasn't YOU Misssssster Ford looked mad at, at around 0.46, and at about 1.52. I was a bit confused at first when I thought it was you, cos you sounded on the money. Sadowsky and Aggie (I read in one of the comments) - a match made in heaven! Peace bro.
bravi
@TheConnord12 That's actually Travis Carlton, Larry Carlton's son!
which gig is this? Is it available on DVD? This song is addictive!!
I'm pretty sure he can't hear his vocals and trying to tell the soundman. Great version of this song
Tengo ese DVD y no entendí bien que pasó al comienzo de la canción que enoja tanto a Robben.. Alguien puede sacarme la duda. Gracias y Saludos desde Uruguay.
@Dzonrid lol ... I had to google that to see a picture ... yeah could be Severus too ... hehe
@DrThorondor Lots of scales. Some pentatonic, minor, mixo, chromatic, and a bunch of other non diatonic stuff. He follows the chords a lot with his soloing.
where you you go from here
i know many disagree, but in total honesty you're totally right. R.Ford is a brilliant guitar player, but he should get a singer to work with.
@JOHNNYG99X I don't think it is at the bass player but the soundman regarding the monitors. @ 0.35 you see him raising his thumb like he wants his monitor or amp louder. Then looked mad as he probably wasn't paying attention lol!!!!!!!
Is that what it's all about, Manny?
@grulloverde when Willy was that young, he had short hair & wore a suit & tie
i love the way he plays when he is being soulful, hate to say it and i know what people are going to say but it just gets too jazzy in the end, dosent make sense to me...ehhh still love the guy
If you're a musician, you just might want to figure out what he's doing...it makes sense and it's beautiful
i understand what it is, i dont like how it sounds. i can identify it yes, but just becuase it in theory can be defiend dose not mean i like it. i think its too robotic, more soul should be put (in my taste) into the feel and be slowed down. you can go out of key just know when to do it. @Pudsy440 No, it's Severus Snape
Sadowsky bass... nice.

how much money has/does Robben ford make??? I he extremely successful in the money aspect?
Poppa Chubby on bass?
Man, Robben got pissed at that bassists a couple times through this performance...and i didn't even catch what he was messing up.
is not Robben Ford.. is Willie Nelson young..!
@TheConnord12 hehe
you have to play guitar to really appreciate those out notes - awesome depth into the blues -
@sunp
What do you mean?
al pacino on the drums?
Ha,ha, Super Hilarious!! : )
Al Pacino on drums
al pacino on the drums.
surely his music is all about the complete opposite of 'frontperson' diva antics
@Pudsy440 Now... that was some funny stuff !!! Hahahahahahahahahaha...
He's disappointed with the soundman. You can see a clear headshake after a feedback squeal at 0:25-0:27
@Pudsy440 hahahaahahahahahahhahahahahahaahah trueeeeeeeeeeeeeee
@mikesta99 real artists usually arent.
al pachino is playin drums? LoL
Is the bass player Larry Calton's kid? Terrible sound mix
I liked Gandalf better with the beard.

GOOD PLAYER HE NEEDS TO LEARN HOW TO SING
Absolutely a false statement .. :)
Get a good (female) singer/frontman and just play guitar Robben
