Great video Ron! Thank you so much for mentioning the importance of wiring, which is often overlooked. Starters, alternators and batteries are only as good as the quality of the wiring that connects them. It's also worth mentioning that proper voltage maintenance when a boat isn't being used is also very important. Fully-charged, most batteries will measure between 12.6 and 13.2 volts. Whenever any lead-acid battery is discharged below 12.4 volts and is left sitting in that state, sulfation begins forming in the plates, which diminishes both capacity and lifespan. That makes a quality battery maintenance device an excellent investment for any boat owner.

I just now discovered you guys on you tube.. I have a, 1998 Ski Supreme that needs some "lovin". Im looking forward to talking with you guys!! It has a "ford Commander" Engine. Im hoping that you guys have parts that are compatible.. I was really impressed by you guys and your videos!! Thanks for sharing! I actually gave up on getting my boat back in the water last summer.. Replaced coil, rebuilt the Holley, new pts, plugs, wires, and it will start and run till you try to put it in gear.. Then it dies.. I watched your distributor replacement video, and I'm thinking that is the culprit!! Anyway, You've inspired me to get back to work on the boat!! I am 66 but still an accomplishment slalom skier, actually a fanatic.. I only got to ski behind a tournament boat a couple of times last summer, and had to settle w skiing behind a big ol Yamaha Waverunner.. Definitely wouldn't hold a straight line, but it wa better than nothing.. Thanks again!!

Great video. I like your through explanation of how and why this upgrade is beneficial. I know myself to upgrade the charging wire with such a performance increase and am glad to see you reiterate its importance. I just found your channel and subscribed.

Hey Ron, I'm interested in the aluminum frame bench seat you made for your American skier! Do you happen to have a drawing of that?

Ron don't forget us with older 1979 correct craft nautiques that have the old pleasurecraft alternators....please do a video on how to convert old style to a new style alternator....thank you

THe older engines with single V belts pulling the alternator will not work for the big Balmar alternator, they require a dual v-belt or serpentine belt. Plus there is more wiring to upgrade as well.

What are your thoughts re: changing out pulleys on ski boat alternators? My 88 prostar doesn't have any aftermarket electronics (I run it with points) but we ski/cruise usually around 3500 and rarely go 4000k rpm. Based on my pulley measurements I think the alternator at idle is only turning 1200 rpm and the voltmeter tends to droop a bit at idle when you turn on lights.
I'm wondering if swapping to a different pulley might be a good upgrade. (Rebuild alternator 2 years ago)

Doubt a pulley change would do much in your case, sounds more like a poor alternator/regulator, what is the voltage at idle and at 1000 rpm. A good alternator/regulator will hold 13.5 volts at idle with very low loads like your boat is.

Wouldn't you also have to upgrade the positive and negative cables going from the starter motor to the battery(s) to the same 2AWG?
