Pentatonix a "brief" background. They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);
Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”. Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on UA-cam, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his UA-cam videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on UA-cam), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on UA-cam, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently. It is an often debated subject among the Pentaholics as to just how soon we introduce the "Beginners Guide" as we don't want to overdo the introduction. This is a compilation of snips of a whole load of songs which PTX have released. It highlights each member with some of their solos and then a brief history in video. It is quite long - 14+ minutes and is a little dated now (Feb 2020) but is a good watch ua-cam.com/video/lDxIfwfCmQE/v-deo.html&pp=ygUdYmVnaW5uZXJzIGd1aWRlIHRvIHBlbnRhdG9uaXg%3D. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. A good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/ Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They have Grammy wins for Daft Punk Medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene featuring Dolly Parton. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win. Another nomination for Holidays Around the World album in the 2024 list! Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. They married 22/04/24! They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only a capella group with a star! They came 3rd in the 2023 Masked Singer performing as "California Rolls" being unmasked in May 23. Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!! 1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to. 2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album. 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage. 4. It is "Pentatonix" there is no "The".
Avi didn't just "join them for this song" he has been with the group since 2011 ,when they won on The Sing Off, until 2017 when he chose to leave the group. So there are a LOT of songs with Avi in them. When Avi left, he was replaced by Matt Sallee who is currently the bass of the group. Would like to hear more of your response to these very talented people.
The only member change was when Avi Kaplan left and Matt Sallee joined in 2017. Everyone else is the same since they started on The Sing Off in 2011, so they've been together now for more than 13 years. Mitch, Scott, and Kirstin have known each other in one combination or another since childhood, and the 3 of them were in High School choir together. (Mitch and Kirstie in particular change their looks a lot, so sometimes people get confused and think there are other new members, but it's always them!) There are so many little "easter eggs" in here that pay homage to Queen and to PTX's own journey together: The panning from ear to ear in the beginning was also in the original. Mitch laying on the couch with the others walking along side (almost as pall bearers) is homage to Freddie's untimely death. The view of the stars in the night sky with the 4 shooting stars is an homage to Brian May's career as an astrophysicist, and the 4 shooting stars are for the 4 members of Queen. The band splayed out on the couch toward the end is homage to the cover of the Sheer Heart Attack album. The couch and it moving is homage to the beginnings of PTX's journey. Most of their early career videos were self-recorded with the 5 of them sitting on a couch in their apartment living room. The moving of the cough can symbolize their journey as a band as well as the road trip in Wayne's World that re-introduced this song to the world. They end up back in the living room on the couch, because at the end of the day they still see themselves as the choir nerds making music that they have always been. I'm sure I'm missing a few, too. They are dedicated to detail in all that they do! As far as Mitch and the megaphone, it's a prop to draw attention to who is making the guitar sound. Mitch is an excellent mimic. Like most music videos, the audio on this was recorded in a studio. There were a few effects added to his vocals, but they continue to perform this live to this day, and it sounds just as good. Check out their performance from the Hollywood Bowl in 2022 on UA-cam. There is also a fun Behind the Scenes video on YT about the making of this video. The couch is remote control, and caused some problems along the way! They have a vast catalogue of music from many genres from 13 years, and it's all good. Anything you pick to react to will be interesting. There is also a large volume of music that doesn't have videos that's just as good. Most of these have "yule log" videos or visualizers. I'm partial to their original music. They have 2 albums that are all original music: Their self-titled album Pentatonix from 2015 is almost all originals (there are a few extra covers on the deluxe edition) and The Lucky Ones from 2021 is all originals. If you want a longer video (about 15 minutes) that's a nice mix, look at the Popspring 2016 video. It includes 3 originals form their 2015 album, and their Evolution of Michael Jackson, performed in Japan in 2016. It was recorded by MTV, so the audio and filming are great.
On the couch: it is remote controlled, but seemed to have a mind of it's own - it tried to run over Kevin (the beatboxer), and Scott (tall blonde guy) joked that they needed to wear crash helmets while riding on it. It had a step attached to the back to help Kirstie climb over it, but that didn't add to its stability at all! Mitch doing the guitar solo with the megaphone has actually caused a lot of questions, when it was designed to ANSWER questions for people watching the video. The megaphone is strictly a visual prop, to show viewers (who may not be familiar with PTX) who is doing the guitar sounds, so they aren't completely confused when they hear the guitar in the music. Mitch doesn't use it when performing the song in concert (which is done in most of their non-Christmas shows); he creates the "wah-wah" effect strictly vocally.
I recommend their Daft Punk medley, the Evolution of Music, and Sound of Silence. Or some of their banger original music “Sing”, “Can’t Sleep Love” or “Anchor”. We, their fan base, are called Pentaholics.
Welcome to PTX. There are so many videos to see. Three-time Grammy winners. Multi-platinum album sales. Hollywood Walk of Fame. Just celebrated 13 years together. They’ve evolved vocally and artistically over those years. BH was recorded about midway through the journey. There is a BTS video about how it was filmed. The couch is motorized and they really struggled with it. As others already said, Avi left in 2017 and Matt joined soon afterwards. It changed their sound slightly but they are still fantastic. Kirstie and Mitch change their looks a lot from video to video. So they look like different members. It’s an optical illusion. 😂😂 Hallelujah, The Prayer, and O Holy Night are incredible but they have another 50 - 100 videos that are amazing. They do Evolution videos of Michael Jackson, Rihanna, Ariana Grande, Music. Early videos of rap in Can’t Hold Us, Thrift Shop. They cover everything from BTS, Gotye, Ed Sheeran, Imagine Dragons, Seal, Daft Punk to Elvis classics. They take classic songs and turn upside down. See Over the River as an example. They have a whole album of original music with Sing, Love Again, Can’t Sleep Love, Cracked. They are notoriously hard to react to and you’ll often get blocked. Slapping a copyright layer over the video seems to help. Their label is to blame for that.
subscribed for more Pentatonic. Yes, it is Avi. Hevleft in 2017, worn out by the constant touring and travelling and his mum had cancer. That couch was dangerous. It almost ran over Kevin the beatbocxer n kept tipping over. The hailer is a prop. Mitch sings the guitar solo on stage without it. PTX shines in all genres. All the members are original except Avi. He was replaced bt Matt Daft Punk, 90s Dance Medley, Shallow, Can't Hold Us, there are more than 200 videos to show and countless live recordings, tv specials, etc to choose from
Check out live versions of this and many of their other hits from their 2022 Hollywood Bowl concert, which was professionally recorded for streaming and fans captured and posted songs.
I subscribed for more Pentatonix reactions! As fabulous as this is, somehow they continuously out do themselves. I recommend reacting to their original video of hallelujah with Avi and then their newest upload of hallelujah with Matt, the current bass and you can see how similar and different they are now. They’re magical. Also no one does Christmas quite like pentatonix!!!
There's a lot of variety, and many fun surprises in their catalog - choose another that appeals to you, Pentaholics are mostly warm and receptive followers
Pentatonix Bohemian Rhapsody Insights: So, some things to know about this cover and video: -It took PTX years to get the arrangement to where they felt they could do the original masterpiece justice. -The cover, and especially the video, was meant to be an homage to Queen. Some of the moments paying respect were: 1.The mono-recording of the line "easy come, easy go" followed by the panning of the voices from left to right on the line "little high, little low" (which is how the original was recorded), 2. Obviously the flashlights being used to mimic the lighting on the operatic part of the original video, 3. The four shooting stars to represent the four members of Queen, as well as acknowledge the fact that Dr. Brian May is an astrophysicist, 4. The overhead shot of them lying on the couch is to represent the Sheer Heart Attack album cover. 5. When Mitch lies down on the couch, singing "Too late, My time has come," they're referring to Freddie Mercury's death (the foreshadowing was, of course, unintentional on Freddie's part; there's no way he could have known about AIDS, thank goodness). The other four are walking next to the couch to serve as Mitch's pall bearers. The megaphone was just a prop. It is not needed to reproduce the electric guitar distortion. -PTX can, and does, perform this live with no backing track...something even Queen and the Great Freddie Mercury could not do. Freddy once said he didn't care what people did with his music as long as they "...don't make it boring, darling!", so I think he would absolutely approve. They were indeed on an actual road and luckily, there actually is a behind the scenes for the making of this one that you can watch! The link is: ua-cam.com/video/Q8ugJnIG_Lk/v-deo.html Also when Brian Mays heard it... he posted it on his web site with the word "ENJOY”. The overall video--with the "living room" and couch--is an homage to Pentatonix's own journey as a group. They lost their record deal right after winning the Sing Off and moving to LA, so they started putting out videos on UA-cam, performing covers. They would sit on the couch in Kevin (beatboxer) and Avi's (bass) living room and just record themselves on Mitch's (counter tenor who took the lead on this song) iPad. Some of their earliest videos went viral and they eventually were able to secure a new deal, record an EP, go on tour, release chart-topping albums and win three Grammy awards...so they moved out of the living room and down this new, unknown road. At the end of the day, though, they're still the same choir-nerds they've always been; just happy to sit together on a couch and sing.
Yes you have the incredible Avi Kaplan named correctly. You might enjoy checking out his solo music recorded before he left PTX as Avriel and the Sequoias, and after leaving as Avi Kaplan. Most start with Change on the Rise his first release after leaving. He doesn't fit into one genre he hits notes of Bluegrass (his cover of OutKasts Hey Ya) Country (First Place I Go) 70's rock (Feel Alright) plus always puts in some folk, americana, & soul. Best defines by another as Avicana!
There is a behind the scenes video showing the making of this video that will explain a few things, if you want to see how it was done. The megaphone was just a prop... Mitch does not use one in the live versions of this song.
Subscribed for more Pentatonix. I was just wondering what you thought of Kevin’s beatboxing. Some people are tricked into thinking that there are actual drums played in this. It’s a common misconception that there have been several member changes to the band. Actually, there has been only one member change. Avi left in 2017 and Matt took over as Bass. Mitch and Kirstie changes their looks a lot which is probably the main reason for this confusion. Recommend their cover of The Prayer.
Fun reaction. Just a head's up, their label SME (sony), is notoriously difficult on reactors over copyright, so dont be afraid to cover the video with text/filter/opacity, as the video tends to trigger it more often.
I'm sure that your chanel will grow as you dive into PTX so many songs to listen too Amazing Grace My Chains Are Gone version Oh Holy Night, The Prayer, Hallelujah, Mary Did You Know, Noel they have a catalog of over 300 songs so get ready to go down that rabbit hole and enjoy their 🎶
Queen never performed BH live in its entirety. Apparently, too many layering were done on the operatic section that it was not possible to replicate it onstage live. During concerts at the scaramouche part, the band members leave the stage and the music video is shown instead. PTX performs this live in concerts, without any instrument, just five beautiful voices giving life to this classic.
Sorry but that was a lackluster reaction at best. An occasional "sounds good" "nice! " "good so far"? That's not interesting to watch. That just makes it watching someone listening to music. Not much better that paint drying. Try actually commenting on the performance, not how the couch moves! What did you think of the percussion beat boxing? What about their individual voices? How about how they structured the background accompaniment? You are going to have to try harder than that to get my Like and Subscription.
THIS IS WHY PTX IS THE NUMBER ONE ACAPELLA GROUP IN THE WORLD.
🎤🎤🎤
Yep that's definitely Avi😁😁😁 that basso profondo is like no other.
Kiss from a rose - Pentatonix
Pentatonix a "brief" background.
They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that.

The Prayer is a brilliant cover by Pentatonix. You must do that very soon. Great reaction.
Pentatonix the best!!!!
Dr. Brian May shared this with the single word "enjoy."

Hallelujah, The Prayer, and O Holy Night are incredible but they have another 50 - 100 videos that are amazing.
He was replaced bt Matt
Daft Punk, 90s Dance Medley, Shallow, Can't Hold Us, there are more than 200 videos to show and countless live recordings, tv specials, etc to choose from
More PENTATONIX please!!!😊
I second that suggestion!
'Aha' live from Singapore!!!! Mind blowing. All sing impressively but the play between Mitch and Avi is phenomenal. Mitch is the star.
There's a lot of variety, and many fun surprises in their catalog - choose another that appeals to you, Pentaholics are mostly warm and receptive followers
More PTX please! Rx for this. Greetings from South Africa
Pentatonix Bohemian Rhapsody Insights:
So, some things to know about this cover and video: -It took PTX years to get the arrangement to where they felt they could do the original masterpiece justice. -The cover, and especially the video, was meant to be an homage to Queen.
Some of the moments paying respect were:
1.The mono-recording of the line "easy come, easy go" followed by the panning of the voices from left to right on the line "little high, little low" (which is how the original was recorded),
2. Obviously the flashlights being used to mimic the lighting on the operatic part of the original video,
3. The four shooting stars to represent the four members of Queen, as well as acknowledge the fact that Dr. Brian May is an astrophysicist,
The link is: ua-cam.com/video/Q8ugJnIG_Lk/v-deo.html
Also when Brian Mays heard it... he posted it on his web site with the word "ENJOY”.
I can read this over and over . Thanks!
Just subbed for more PTX!! I LOVE THEM❤
All of their covers are fantastic, but Coffee in Bed is a great original song.
The 4 shooting stars represent the members of Queen... This was a 5 year effort as their homage to Queen.
Subbed for more PTX!
I Loved it, So I Liked it and Subscribed. ✌
Nice!

Fun reaction. Just a head's up, their label SME (sony), is notoriously difficult on reactors over copyright, so dont be afraid to cover the video with text/filter/opacity, as the video tends to trigger it more often.
Just remember... PTX doesn't do covers.... They do upgrades!
Love again, Daft punk, Mary Did You Know. There are 150 more. Avi and Kevin{KO} also have youtube channels
👍Hey Josh, great reaction! It is romote control, you guessed it! Subbed for more PTX.
There is a 'Behind the Scenes " 'video showing the recording of this.
Deft punk, imagine, sing, your a mean one, Jolene with Dolly Parton, sound of silence are just a few. You can’t go wrong with any of their songs.
I’m a great Queen fan ! This is by far nr two for me !! Really love it .
This is one of my top 3 favorite PTX performances- alongside Hallelujah and The Sound of Silence.
Run To You, their original song, if you don’t cry during it, you’re a robot..and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen..a revelation..
Loved your smile and reaction!

👍👍👍👍👍👍
Love it!
Lovely❤❤❤
Cool❤j😊
👍
👍 Yes, that's Avi Kaplan. I still regret he left the group.
The couch is remote controlled. There is a video about the making of this video that you might enjoy.
You just got "Mitch slapped"...
There is a back story on the shoot...
Avi's bass is sooo good. Mitch is great as are the rest, but Avi makes the song.
Avi is still making music...look him up.
Yes! The Great Avi Kaplan.
He and his traveling band are currently touring in Europe.
He made PTX worth listening to.
Another left handed compliment from you know who. Matt is just as good in a different way. They each have their strengths and weaknesses.
Avi is the only change. Matt is his replacement. The other four are originals.
You're going down the rabbit hole...
It was strictly a prop....
