When they wanted to record this they had an issue getting a studio. So with a budget of $400 the song was recorded in a bedroom closet and the video was recorded in the kitchen of Avi's apartment. They won their first Grammy for this

Also, no effects used. No auto tune. If you want proof there is a live version of this where it is just them standing in an apartment with no mics or anything. Just them. When they record a song if they can't sound that way live they don't do it in a recording.

    • @06s091
      @06s091 9 місяців тому +13

Well, that’s not really true. They’ve always used certain effects like reverb and equalisation on recordings. That’s not a bad thing though. And they sound amazing live of course- often better than the recordings imo. As for the “they won’t record something if they can’t do it live” thing… that has just kinda become the thing to say for some reason. But again not really a fact. Especially in more recent years where they use a lot more production techniques.

    • @ellenhulslander2897

@@06s091, true, but if they do use a background recording, it is them in that recording.
They have admitted from the beginning that there is usually a little extra ear candy in recordings, but they still could do them live.
They now have superior sound equipment and techs that know how to balance the mics for live performances as well.

no autotune. But they use Melodyne on most of their studio recordings for pop effect. But they definitelly can sing even better live.

They have used Auto-Tune on occasion recently but for its obvious Auto-Tune special effect, like on a couple sections of their 90s Dance Medley ("Blue" and "Believe"), as a callback to the original versions.

This may not have autotune/pitch correction. I do not know. But Wings of Pegasus has an analysis video showing a more recent Pentatonix video showing it was pitch-corrected. He showed the same for a recent Home Free video. I have heard both groups in circumstances where pitch correction was not used and they both sounded so good without it, so it is very disappointing to hear such talented and skilled singers homogenized.

Thanks for your reaction to this cover as it is an important part of Pentatonix history. As you already probably know, Pentatonix was the group that won first place on the American singing competition TV show 'Sing Off" third season back in 2011 (Home Free and Voice Play competed on the forth season of the 'Sing Off' back in 2013). The grand prize for the winner was a promised recording contract with Sony. They went out to California after they won but Sony dropped them after their first week stating that acapella music was just a novelty that would never sell records. Pentatonix continued to make and post videos on their social media pages and grew a large fan base. This one they made in the kitchen and closet of Avi and Kevin's apartment scraping up $400 dollars between them and won them their first Grammy award! (You will want to check out their acceptance of their first Grammy for this on You Tube as it is heartwarming). They did get a recording contract after they proved themselves and won that Grammy and started the contract with their Christmas albums which sold really well. The TV show, 'Sing Off' was cancelled and there was no forth season in 2012. In 2013, the 'Sing Off' came back on TV just as a holiday special, shorter than the regular seasons of the past and included Voice Play and Home Free in the competition. The show's format had changed and the show focused on promoting interest in acapella music and was hoping to be reinstated on network TV. Instead of a promised recording contract, the show had a 'Sing Off' tour for two years following the show to promote the acapella groups on the show. All the different acapella groups became friends very supportive of each other as well. So glad that these acapella groups all became successful through a huge amount of support on the internet.

As a vocalist, one of the craziest things I've ever seen & experienced (from any group/song) was their "Aha, live Singapore Star vista" Shot by a fan whose recording mic couldn't handle the bass, yet.... from the beautiful & harmonic choral intro (that gave time to Kevin to put his cello away & join them onstage) to the crazy & near perfect insane syncopation... to the highs of highs, lows of lows, just.... ALL of it. Even if you don't react to it, imho a must experience. Prob one of the best things I've ever heard, even w/ the audio quality. A song I had never heard before, yet... I've prob listened to it too many times to count over the years! Get your emotional security blanket & good headphones ready, it's nuts!

Great reaction. Yes, Pentatonix is the premier acapella group with worldwide recognition and success. You mentioned autotuning. Many Pentaholics believe PTX never uses autotune. Analysis of some of their songs prove they definitely use autotune. There is a lot of post production that goes into their videos. This video was only made with a $400 budget, and filmed on an iPad. I can imagine most of that $400 went into post production. Not taking away from their incredible talent in the least, but it would be doubtful they would have won their first Grammy without the excellent film editing and post production for the Daft Punk video. Fortunately for them, they had great connections in the music industry from the start. When making official videos for release, any artist would be crazy not to do what they can to perfect their performance. In their official videos, they will also occasionally layer their own voices to make themselves sound more full. And yes, even in concerts occasionally they use a beat track. I am probably going to be criticized by Pentaholics for saying all that, but analysis doesn't lie. However, In concert, it is about 98% all them. Their talent level is insane. I like to listen to the live versions of their songs. You may want to listen to Daft Punk live. Very impressive is all I will say. This group is so tight and they harmonize so well together. It is just a joy to listen to and watch them. You may want to see how far they have come in the last 10 years by reacting to a more recent song. Occasionally the beatboxer, Kevin Olusula will play the cello in one of their songs. He beatboxes (celloboxes) while he is playing. Insane, right? They released a Vivo Live version of Kiss by a Rose (Seal cover) at the end of last year where Kevin plays the cello and beatboxes. I would love for you to react to that. Also their newest Christmas release, O Holy Night is one of the best versions of that Christmas classic I have ever heard. Although they have many great original songs, like we Pentaholics say, they don't do covers, they do upgrades. I subbed for more PTX reactions! Thank you.

Pentatonix is supreme in timing and in arrangements, which are by the group itself and their long-time collaborator Ben Bram. Speaking of Michael Jackson, check out their medley Evolution of Michael Jackson. Note that Mitch Grassi, the tenor/countertenor who has the little solo leads throughout the piece, sings well up into the typical female range, so it's not just Kirstin Maldonado you're hearing. For a spectacular Mitch lead, check out The Prayer. For a contrast with Kirstin's voice, check out their Cover of Shallow, where Kirstin duets with Scott Hoying, the baritone. Note also that the beatboxer, Kevin Olusola, also sings tenor and has a pure, sweet falsetto. So the group can cover a tremendous range of pitches, and can be completely ethereal: check out Pure Imagination/Christmastime is Here from this past holiday season,. The bass here is Avi Kaplan, who departed Pentatonix in 2017 for a solo career and was replaced by Matt Sallee, whom you will see and hear in The Prayer, Shallow, and Pure Imagination/Christmastime is Here.

Pentatonix won the Sing Off 2nd season I think. They won a $2000,000 record deal. The label dropped them so they decided to start putting music on UA-cam. They already had a large following from the show. Some of the other groups you mentioned also won other seasons on the Sing Off.

$200,000 PLUS a record deal. The cancellation of the record deal didn't affect the $200,000. They pooled their money and used it to pay expenses while they were publishing only to UA-cam, so no one had to get a day job - they could put all their effort into arranging and rehearsing. Without that 200 grand there would likely be no Pentatonix today.

There's no autotune or pitch doubling or pitch modulation in this recording. Only a small amount of reverb and compression for volume. The higher pitch you hear is sung by Mitch, the brunette with the black pattern on his shirt. He's a contratenor and usually sings the soprano parts. Kirsten is an alto.

Pentatonix doesn't use auto-tune and they don't overdub. The one song they use autotune is in "90s Dance Medley" where the songs they are covering are well known for their obvious autotune. Pentatonix sounds almost exactly like the videos when they perform live. They are, by far, the most versatile acapella group in the world. They cover more genres of music than any other artist or group I've ever heard, from RAP to opera. There is a reason they have over 7 billion views on UA-cam. I recommend reacting to Hallelujah next, then Sound of Silence, then Shallow. If you're a Queen fan, listen to Bohemian Rhapsody by Pentatonix.

At the time they recorded this their publisher was Madison Gate, a minor subsidiary of Sony which specialized in publishing movie soundtracks. Not exactly the ideal publisher for a group like Pentatonix, but it was better than just posting everything to UA-cam and hoping to get some patrons, which is what they'd been doing before.
Madison Gate didn't have a recording studio - they'd had no need of one for movie soundtracks - but Pentatonix had already discovered that a closet had good acoustics so they were cool with recording there.
Madison Gate DID hook Pentatonix up with an excellent video recording company named FifGen. PTX had a venue lined up for this video shoot, but it fell through at the last minute, so someone at FifGen suggested that they get some black sheets and set up a sort of photo booth in Avi and Kevin's kitchen.
The single ring light came out of PTX's $400 budget for this shoot, as did the makeup, presumably including the blue contact lenses. (Kevin's eyes couldn't tolerate the contacts, hence the visor. Judging by how red Avi's eyes were he must have had trouble with the contacts also.) I'm not sure, but I THINK FifGen supplied the black light.
I'm not sure who edited the video, either FifGen or Ben Bram. Almost certainly the audio was edited by Ed Boyer.
This won them their first Grammy, for "Best Arrangement Instrumental Or A Cappella." (As their co-arranger, Ben Bram shared the Grammy.) Before "Daft Punk Medley," that Grammy category did not exist - the Academy changed "Best Instrumental Arrangement" just so they could nominate Pentatonix!
The songs in this mashup are:
    • “Technologic”
    • “One More Time”
    • “Get Lucky”
    • “Digital Love”
    • “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger”
    • “Television Rules the Nation”
    • “Around the World”
You can find the complete lyrics here: genius.com/Pentatonix-daft-punk-lyrics
I recommend watching their private performance of this. Recorded on a fan's cell phone, just the five of them, off-mic., in a quiet room. The balance isn't good - Kevin's beatboxing really does need amplification - but you'll be surprised by how close it is to the professionally edited version. ua-cam.com/video/tw4YCsHXKgI/v-deo.html

    The members of Pentatonix:
    In this video we have:
Scott Hoying, lyric baritone. Scott is the guy with white hair and eyebrows; normally he's blond but he'd recently decided to bleach his hair when they made this. Scott's range begins somewhere in the middle of a normal bass range and extends up through a normal tenor range. When Pentatonix's bass has a solo Scott can and does take over the bass's harmony line.
Kirstin (also called Kirstie, which rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado, the only woman in Pentatonix. Kirstin can sing anything from low alto through coloratura soprano, and she has fantastic whistle notes on top of that. Recently Pentatonix has begun describing her as an "alto soprano."
Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable), the clean shaven dark-haired guy who keeps singing "One more time," is a natural contratenor with a range of just over six octaves. Shawn Stockman, of Boyz II Men, said Mitch has "one of the prettiest voices I have ever heard in my life." Mitch moves seamlessly between chest voice, mixed voice, and head voice, and all the other members of Pentatonix agree that he's their best singer.
Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable) Kaplan, bearded white guy, is a lyric bass. Avi is an operatically trained basso profundo (his lowest notes have blown out speakers in live performances), but his range extends upward to about the middle of a normal tenor range. Avi is also the only member of Pentatonix who is no longer with the band; he resigned in 2017 for a variety of personal reasons, but he's since gone on to have a very successful solo career. I highly recommend subscribing to his UA-cam channel: youtube.com/@AviKaplanMusic
The fifth member of Pentatonix is the black guy wearing the visor: Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth syllable), beatboxer extraordinaire. Somewhere there may be a better beatboxer than Kevin, but if so I've never encountered him or her. Kevin is generally too busy being the entire percussion section to sing, but when he does sing he has a lovely tenor voice that occasionally dips into the uppermost reaches of baritone, and he's known for the beauty of his falsetto. He's also a pretty good rapper and an excellent dancer. Kevin has perfect pitch. He began piano lessons at age 4, cello at age 6, and alto saxophone at age 10. He beatboxes while playing the cello, a technique he calls "celloboxing." He performed at Carnegie Hall twice when he was a teenager, once on the cello and once on the saxophone. He graduated from Yale in 2011 with a pre-med major and had been accepted to Yale Medical School before he decided to become a professional beatboxer instead of a brilliant surgeon. He speaks five languages fluently: English, French, Spanish, German, and Mandarin Chinese. He's one of the kindest people in the world, and when he laughs he makes the whole planet seem like a brighter place.
Not in this video: Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable), lyric bass. It's hard to be sure just what Matt's range is, because it's still growing. To find his current range I recommend listening to a recent live stream of "Hallelujah," though you should probably watch their official video of "Hallelujah" first so you can hear what it sounded like with Avi singing the second verse. You can find the recording with Matt here: ua-cam.com/video/FqphhPapkoc/v-deo.htmlsi=tC6Ew07JGeQKQvDL
Matt's arrangement of the second verse seems to be designed to show off his full range, and it will blow you away. His lowest notes don't blow out speakers (though they may do so in a year or two), but on the high end he reaches the upper end of a tenor range. I believe he has the largest range of any member of Pentatonix, past or present.

All the members can sing super high. There is no need to electronically make it higher.

    Really enjoyed your reaction.
Please also react to Gabriel Henrique - "Earth Song" (Michael Jackson), "I Have Nothing" (Whitney Houston), "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" (Jennifer Hudson), "I Want To Know What Love Is" (Foreigner).

It's amazing how many reactors *claim* to know music, and then throw out wild theories and guessing. I get it's a first reaction, but not everything is autotuned and heavily modified. Of course, this is a recording and has been touched up for "studio recording" if you consider a closet a studio. Regardless... sigh... other than simply guessing and being wrong, not a totally awful reaction. Thumbs up! and a follow!

Aaaaarghhhh... That's not what I meant...haha. I know they can sing, ok, I know they sound amazing live, ok, I also know how mixing music works and the amount of plugins and effects everyone uses, not because the artist is bad, but because recording sound isn't easy and the standards of perfection are so high. I don't know what your music background is, but I mix and produce music on a daily basis and perhaps hear some things that others don't and when I express it in a simplistic way people just assume that I criticize the artist or think that they are fake.

    • @FaanaMusic
      @FaanaMusic  8 місяців тому

Yeah, but I think people misunderstand what I mean. I mix music and you use effects, plug-ins and other tools to enhance the sound that's nothing bad, it's just the way sound engineering works. Often people take it as if I'm diminishing the quality of the artist, but that's actually not what I mean at all. 🙈

PTX members also have solo songs now so you should check those out, too. Of If I remember correctly this video was recorded in a closet or kitchen.
I’ve never seen you before so I don’t know if you have reacted to *JungKook* before or not. Please react to the title track, *”Standing Next to You”* , off of his debut album. It is a retro funk song and partly an homage to MJ. The album had over 1 BILLION streams BEFORE it was released in November. It now has a bet 2 Billion Streams. Usher did a remix of this song with JK. (But please do the original first and Usher… if you want to do the Usher version.)
There are also several good live performances he did before starting his mandatory military service in December for being a S Korean man. (Kind of sad to get such a great start to your solo career and have to stop promoting it less than 1.5 months after it is released). But I respect him. If you want to see him
Live check out his iHeart performances or Audacy live.

It’s their voice, but I think they used autotune for effect, like Cher did in “Believe”. Not because they were out of tune, because they rarely are.
