It was so odd seeing John as a dead beat father who wanted nothing to do with her and Jack but then he slowly becomes who he is in rdr 1 thanks to Arthur
makes sense. He was not even sure the child was his
That’s what makes his redemption even more powerful to me, turn from wanting nothing to do with his family to literally sacrificing himself for it.
Also in chapter 6 he spends a lot of time with Jack at camp
I think Abigail is a misunderstood character. She just wants to look out for John and Jack and for John to stop living like an outlaw and settle down and become a good honest man. She may be a bit whiny or angry but everything she says and does it out of love for John and Jack.
And that’s the problem, had John been complaining as much as Abigail did about protecting family, people would have a problem, but Abigail being a whore and a woman who can’t protect herself unless she has help from the people she treats like shit apparently makes her some misunderstood woman who is supposed to get everything she wants in life for free whereas John had no choice but to live his life as an outlaw and only chose to work shoveling shit for her
And she was right that he shouldn’t have gone after Micah, it led Ross to John.
I agree with this so much. She's such a great, loyal woman. Uncle was truly right about her
@@thomasmartin4281but if he didn’t everything arthur did would be for nothing.
@@cursedweaponkenjaku888 i think rockstar was trying to hint that it was a mistake throughout the game with the "revenge is a fools game" "vengeance is an idiots game" but also micah deserved to die so
In those days 17 wasn't treated as underage. Girls were being married at 14.... Abigail definitely was a prostitute. Uncle was the Pimp. Even Arthur says he was the worst Pimp ever... And its Uncle that says in Chapter 2 of RDR2 when he and Arthur go to town with the girls, that he is going to "Put the women to work" and Karen replies "With pleasure "..
Abigail gave it up after she got pregnant because she was in love with John
Agreed. Thinking a gang of outlaws in 19th century America would actually adhere to modern day ethics and societal norms is always laughable
Yea, but it makes sense for John not to want to look after her and Jack in the beginning.
John himself wasn't sure whether Jack was his son, and rightly so.... who the hell would settle down with a working girl at first(albeit a former one)
I assumed "put the women to work" was their usual schtick. The thing they do, gathering intel and stealing stuff from people. Like in Valentine, I believe that one of the girls was about to knock a guy out to rob him, after making him 'think' she was going to sleep with him.
What are you on? Married at 14 was not allowed some people did it of course just like they do now.
17 is still legal age and 14
Actually 16 is legal age in my state
Her being 17 really doesn’t mean much. The age or consent in certain modern day US states is 16. So 17 in 1899 wouldn’t have stopped anyone, even moral heavy
so you'd bang a 17 year old? 💀
Thank you. I don't know why dude in the video is making such a hard stance on her being 17 like it would have changed anything. Not to mention, John is what, 3 or 4 years older than her? So 17-18 year old girl meets a 20-21 year old guy. That's... really not that weird even for today.
Your right but I can't see Arthur, Dutch or Hosea sleeping with her. Dutch is most likely too out of the lot but she isn't Dutch's type she isn't rich or sophisticated or someone who likes literature.
@@BallBatteryReligionI’m not sure he’s even played the game. His pronunciation of Javier and Hosea are proof as much.

In my opinion i don't hate Abigail sure she loves to whine at john for showing off his gun skills, but you gotta remember she just wants john to be a regular dad for the sake of jack.
And that’s the problem, he protects his ranch and his family and the people in the ranch yet Abigail complains like a bitch when John doesn’t just sit back and let tons of people get shot at or killed
@@kyledeguzman165yeah everyone leaves out this context it’s so annoying. What is he supposed to do literally act like a coward and let people get robbed/killed?!
@@yaboyreflex1919 the thing is abigail was tired of always having to move so she wanted a place to settle down. john could’ve handled the situation with the police but because of his lifestyle, he resorted to his usual habits which is why abigail was upset. she knew it was john’s pride as well. sometimes he didn’t shoot because he HAD to, she shot because he CAN, and that was the issue that abigail didn’t want to involve jack in.
When a team of armed burglars comes to burn your house down, you don’t have time to wait on the police.
true but that doesn’t mean john had to resort to his old habits- which abigail was trying to keep him from doing
I always felt that Arthur wanted to marry Abigail mostly because of the guilt he felt after his own son and mother of his child were killed by outlaws. And also the anger and self hatred reflected by John's actions of leaving her when Jack was a baby.

Abigail is a fine woman , even with her past . She pushed John to follow an honest living , and wanted him to be responsible and good . She also wanted jack to learn and become a decent man , she was also hardworking at the camps and always kind to people , even to molly ,who supposedly the rest of the gang disliked . Im glad someone is FINALLY giving her justice!!! Everyone calls her annoying but lets be for real, she just wanted a decent life, and never had the chance to do so before.
I always knew it was unlikely she slept with everyone, since in RDR2 you can clearly see no woman in the camp sleeps with multiple members at the same time. Like, even Karen, drunk all the time, only flirted with Sean from all i could see. So i mean, the women in the camp joined the gang for working and protection, never for just sleeping around.
She was annoying and a whore that cared about nobody except herself and her son,and when her life and her husbands life becomes in danger she ends up complaining as if her “strong and independent” ass couldn’t defend herself on her own yet she has a problem when John kills to save her and his som

Yes it is. The footage was modded for uncle to have this.
Uncle is actually Karl Marx
Considering that "cat houses" were a legal trade at the time, I don't imagine that Abigail would have continued to prostitute after joining the gang. It wouldn't make good business since for the proprietor of an establishment to hire on new talent who had come into town with a gang of outlaws who'd likely bring unwanted attention to their place of business.
Instead, I suspect that she (like Karen, Mary Beth, and Tilly) would go into town and grift unsuspecting drunks for leads or whatever was in their marks' pockets. But, (as you stated) having Jack changed her both physically and mentally.
6:50 looking at my friends family cemetary I can tell you that people born in the late 1800's were not opposed to a a 25 year old man marrying a 15 year old girl.
If you have Arthur make negative comments to Abigail or Jack, Arthur states that anyone in gang could be Jack's dad. Yes, he's being an ass but he's verifying the obvious. Abigail was a 304.
I think in RDR 2 is implied that she used to be a thief, remember that she's the one to discover the location of Dutch's stash, and give Arthur the key to open it, they even have dialogue along those lines. To explain the Susan scene I think fits well, Abigail refuses to going back to stealing the same way she wants John to end his outlaw life, cause she don't want to get caught or killed, again because of Jack, the gang needs money, that's probably why Grimshaw was asking her to return to her "old" habits, never is said to sell herself, which probably weren't as profitable as stealing.
Remember that age of consent wasnt a thing in those times, when a girl get her period they are considered an adult so Abigail growing up poor in those times it would make sense for her to be a prostitute until jack was born then stopped knowing the gang more or less adopted her as somebody more than a prostitute
As much as I love John, he was kind of a pathetic man for most of his life. He definitely Redeemed himself, but I don't blame Abigail. I woulda married her too. Abigail is a beautiful and incredibly strong woman and mother. I dont know why people hate on her, really. I think most of the hate on Abigail comes from RDR and the fact that Romantic interest is shown from Bonney McFarlen. You play the whole game to save Abigail and she has major attitude. Bonnie is shown as beautiful and an extraordinary woman. (Which is why I think they they redesigned Abigail to make her more beautiful in RDR2)
That being said. Like others have said, she’s looking to protect her son. There’s no reason to dislike her. I love that Arthur even says to himself that he should have probably married her cause she’s a good woman.
She was a great character right up to the epilogue when she told John to stop being a man making decisions (or something like that) then leaving John because he stood up to the thugs, but I realize they had to make up some reason for her to leave John just so they could have their heart felt reunion after they built the house on beechers hope
@@lonestarbuckeye6889In the 7 years after Arthur's death, it was implied that they had to move constantly because of John's recklessness. Of course she left
The epilogue really portrayed her very unlikeable though, the reason why John managed to have his own farm is because he knew how to use a gun and that earned him friends and connections for doing noble acts like helping Pronghorn Ranch when needed.
But i didn't see Abigail complain about it, she took it and she was fine with it even though she was giving him such a hard time for not being able to change and even left him too for a time.
Also her mother instincts became a priority pretty much after Jack was taken by Bronte, that's when she realized what really means to be a mother and how much Jack actually meant for her, that's when she started to put Jack needs before her own.
There is a conversation at campfire in chapter 2 where she says how awful it is to be a mother and how she wanted to have a different life and all that, she even says herself she wasn't much of a mother and didn't knew what that means until that point in the story.
Anyone else notice the hammer and sickle on uncle's head about one third of the way through the video?

I believe more and more that dutch must have always been a piece of work because in both the two games , the Pinkerton's during the fishing trip Arthur does with Jack they mention to Arthur how Dutch had a forked tongue and then in the mission where we save Sean, Trelawny is basically trying to tell us how dutch shot and k***ed that young woman in blackwater.
Wait but if Abigail had a client try to leave without paying 10 years before the events of rdr2 that means she's been a whore at 15-16 years old 😧
Not uncommon for those times, up until the 1900s a girl was considered an adult as soon as she has a period
Remeber historical context
If I'm remembering correctly, Abigail was orphaned at a very young age and she grew up in brothels and bars.
Being raised in an environment like that would not only make a kid percieve sexual acts as normal, but she was allowed a way to make money at such a young age and no adults had the morals to prevent her. Of course she'd work at the brothels as soon as they deemed her sexually mature enough.
That's why I think it's sad and hypocritical how players will consider characters like John and Arthur victims of circumstance because they were orphaned young, but Abigail, who also had no choice in how she was raised, is treated like filth.
When Bill is caught he says “we all f*cked Abigail!!” He only says this when he’s pinned down and about to die or get captured so it’s obviously just to get a jab at John before he dies.
You don’t have to be too bright to understand that John is sensitive about Abigail previously being a prostitute, was in his actions, mannerisms and he’d said it directly. Even if Bill didn’t realize it at the time he probably pieced it together from memory or someone just told him. Back before RDR2 Bill wasn’t seen as the idiot he is in RDR1 (correct me if I’m wrong)
Having known John for almost his entire life Dutch knows his insecurities like the back of his hand so he elaborates on his ‘spin’ of reality in camp in front of the government workers to try and embarrass John and probably make him do something rash, or just show he’s the one with the power. Dutch is nothing if not manipulative. Only John’s matured so he just grits his teeth and bares it, probably realizing what Dutch is trying to do. (Like a child gray-rocking an irate manipulative parent.)
It is important to discern the truth from the context of the situation it was delivered in.
But Bill actually slept with her, so as Dutch, Javier, and Arthur. She was a prostitute whom Uncle brought to camp when she was 17-18. She slept with many gang members until she fell in love with John. Arthur's line to Jack (antagonize): "Youndon't look much like John. More like Williamson, or Escuela".
Exactly thank you I always thought it was strange everyone takes Dutch and Bill’s word, two chronic liars who are clearly trying to rile John up
The games says she was a working girl, Dutch's comment to John wouldn't mean shit if it weren't based in truth.
Micah had some words about Abigail during the American Venom mission.
What was it? I can't remember.

I feel like this is weird, what is so wrong with Abigail being a former sex worker who left sex work to be a mother? I think it speaks to both John and Abigail's characters that they put all of the pointless things behind and just accept that they loved eachother.
Some people like to put women on a higher moral ground than men and if her past revolves sex work, she is past "redemption"
Which is interesting because both Abagail and John are symbols of people who want to live a better life and become better people especially for their son and try to lead a healthy sane life
@@Vibrantly_Monochromatic Exactly, it literally is her character to have been a sex worker who overcame that. I don't even think sex-work is bad, it just wasn't what she wanted, she wanted to be a mother and a family.

@@Vibrantly_Monochromatictheres a little truth to your assertion although you exaggerated and peoples hate towards her is just projection and its understandable. People dislike her because of her big mouth. Some of her provocation is valid but mostly it's uncalled for and just pure ridiculing of john it's not a surprise why people dislike her. So that higher ground stuff is just nonexistent it's simply not that deep.
2:13 bro starves arthur
Abigail was what everyone thinks she was, there is enough factual clues to the truth about her. Questions are Why did John actually leave for that year and Why is he not certain about Jack. Since an older Jack favors Dutch more than John, we are left to speculate about what really should have been written. After another fight, Dutch comforted Abigail and with her own needs to feel loved adding in the lack of respect for anyone Dutch took advantage of the situation. John couldn't put the timeline together in his own mind, so he left to sort out his feelings. Upon his return against gang code Dutch took him back into the gang. Arthur was confused by this, Hosea and Dutch throughout the game try to convince John of his fatherhood of Jack. Through the disloyalty and treachery of Dutch, Abigail loved John and he her and Arthur loved them both and together they found their way to Redemption.
I never understood why people compare Abigail to characters like Sadie or Bonnie
Abigail is a completely different character with different goals, a different personality and a different life and for some reason people think that Abigail should just get a gun and become "badass" when she has a son to raise and not the smartest husband to take care of.
Unrelated but "John Marston x Bonnie" is a bad ship

Okay so maybe I’m dumb for not knowing this, but why is there a hammer and sickle on Uncle’s head at 3:40?
Lmao Micah: How's that uhh, whooore of yours? 😂
Also her conflict with grimshaw stems from her no longer 'working' for the gang. She definitely did.
In rdr1 while chasing Javier to capture him he says, "Does Abigail miss me?" To make him mad but if he joined the gang after Jack was born she had to had gotten with him or he just said that to make John angry
Why at 3:44 does uncle have a hammer and sickle on his head

jack's hair starts out light and actually gets darker as he ages. the same thing happened with my mom! she had blond/light brown hair as a little kid, and ended up with brown hair in her teens and on. it does happen!
By the end of RDR1 Jack has dark hair, when he's grown.
She wasn't unfaithful, she was working. John happened to knock her up.
Dutch in RDR1 always tries to get into John's head
lets be honest, its clearly a retcon that has caused a continuity mistake or at least story flaw.

People HATE Abigail??? She is easily one of my favorite characters of rdr franchise.
She cared so much for the people and not just for her family but for the whole gang. She was everyone's sister, and those woman who needed advice always went up to her to get guidance.

Why did uncle have a hammer and sickle on his forehead at 3:41 ??
"These comments were clearly intended to provoke an antagonize, not to provide factual information."
Those two motivations are not mutually exclusive.
Jack could've been any one of the gang's kid. Not Javier, as you've pointed out, which follows, because the only resemblance between adult Jack and Javier is tje mustache.
But adult Jack looks exactly like Dutch, so that kind of narrows it down a lot.

I have a recorded clip of aurtjor antagonizeing abigail and saying she made the most money while whoreing (something along those lines) then john comes and knocks out Arthur i thought my game just crashed but I was just knocked out for a long time before waking up lol
Ok let's understand Abgail situation so we can place her in the right place she was.
She was a prostitute before joining the gang. We don't know for how it took from the moment she met the gang and became a member. It is possible that some of the gang members, including John laid with her while she was a prostitute, and that he got her pregnant.
When she joined the gang, of course she stops being a prostitute. Still, John is not sure whether he was the father or not of the Kid. That changes over the course of the story, but thats another topic.
When you see Grimshaw nudging her to go back to work, here is what you need to understand what the camp girls are. They are thieves. Conn artists. They do scam other men to steal their money. You can see that happening in the chapter 2 mission Polite Society, Valentine Style. You see Karen in the Motel with a man, already taking her clothes off.
What Abgail refuses to do is go back to that life. Since she became a mother, she doesn't want to do that anymore. That is what she refuses to do that Grimshaw was demanding her to, because Grimshaw oversees the camp and ensure that everyone is "contributing", if someone doesn't she snitches them to Dutch.
