As he was marking out the second joint, I thought to myself , "and don't cut the wrong side of the lines". I laughed out loud in surprise when I saw the mistake !
It’s the little things which make our lives on this earth so rewarding…..practically smell the apple pie baking, the pizza getting crunchy, the drips on the window, the bird singing as more sawing continues, the chickens greeting you with endless eggs….and that glorious fire to warm your heart in such icy, snowy weather! Thank you Martijn for this next jump into spring in the mountains! 50:50
That shot was beautiful I had to go back and study it...at the top of the long roof I saw the face of a dragon 🐲 she is gently breathing a tiny bit of fire😀 in the middle I see faces of 2 tiny baby dragons, there faces undeveloped yet..one is peeking from the side of the others face...yes amazing what we can see😅....and yes no drink or drugs needed😂
I've been following Martijn from the beginning - now and then I'd share his adventures with my husband - he would listen politely - then about a month ago I noticed a change - as he flicked through UA-cam he'd notice Martijn's video and he's ask "Have you seen this one yet?" Invariably my answer was "yes" - so the last couple of weeks I've held off and we have watched Martijn together ....I admit it's rather nice to have someone with whom to share Martijn's progress and beautiful scenery. Good night all from Mount Eliza Australia - hope you all had a safe and enjoyable break.
First we knew him as someone who traveled the world on his bike, but now we see him as a man who can do anything. It is something that the current generation should definitely learn about. Even we watch it with envy, right?
That is how I started following him too, the long bike packing trip. Everyone should go back watch his playlists. He is amazing and living his life they way he chooses. He is very inspirational indeed.
I also lived on a rural farm for 2 years with lots of space and buildings falling apart. Trust me anybody who wants to alter a space and wants to learn new crafts, can do it. Lots of the stuff is necessary anyways. But to be fair: Martin is a very precise and clean worker. No haste, the endresult is always very neat. Yet he admits his mistakes, learns from them and chills the fuck out.
I guess there are people among us, like me, who want to do what he did but cannot do it because of certain situations in life. Those who say, "I wish I could do it too."@@rehgina9903
@@hasala12345 They could have researched ALL of the videos and would have learned a Lot. Real work comes from within, not from sitting and wanting to be in the video...(she snapped a photo THEN asked if she could take a pic. Unaware that a camera was watching her as Martijn turned around) so I second the "Nah." that's my take on it...
My dad used to say, every time you turn a faucet and water comes out its a miracle, my eyes rolling, yeah, Dad... Now I appreciate that wisdom and appreciation of someone's work for such a valuable convenience..
From this "dark week", as you named it, you actually selected the snow, the beautiful rain droplets on your sky window, the surreal images of your house and trees immersed in the milky mist, and that heavenly music...all these elements plus others, like the fire in your stove, the apple pie( I think it's your mom's recipe, you baked it some time ago in the outside hanging pot-oven)...well, all these elements gathered in your video brought that fabulous, wonderful balance between dark and light, cold and warm, sadness and joy. After watching this video (and others from your channel), one feels contented, even a little sad from not having a bit more of this, but full of hope waiting for the next one. Thank you, Martijn! I wish you a Happy Easter and am looking forward to seeing your next video.Hope the sun will start shining soon.
I am a 77 year old lady from the Dallas area in the US--I love these videos every Sunday. It sounds like he has quite a fan base of older ladies! I am amazed at this skill, talent, work ethic, etc--He seems happy to be so isolated from everyone. It makes me wonder if there is a lovely lady he communicates with who will one day come and live there when the cabin is complete. I know I am a hopeless romantic. But it would be quite a motivation to finish the project! Everything he does is so detailed and precise and beautiful. What giftedness.
Its 11.30pm on Australia's Gold Coast, neighbourhood is quiet, kitchen is clean, my unit tidy, clothes washing drying , i've had my bath and now in bed, content, about to watch Martijn weekly installment of renovating his Italian Alps farm.
I wake up Sunday to morning coffee and a visit with Martijn in the Italian Alps! How cool it is that people watch from all over the world in very different environments to enjoy the same moments in the alps. I watch from The prairies Canada
I lived in the city, in an apartment, for twenty years. It was built in the early sixties and was nothing special as a building. But the kitchen cabinets were made of wood (not MDF or something similar) and the drawers had locked edges. That is how thins were done back then. I'm guessing the next owner probably replaced the kitchen with something contemporary
It’s so comforting when Martijn shows us his fails lol! He is so talented and capable it can be intimidating lol! It helps show that failure doesn’t have to end a project. Keep Calm and carry on! We are so blessed to be able to get to see the results of Martijn being able to keep calm and carry-on. Every week so awesome to see the project developer!
You are unstoppable! Even if the mountain says no to your trailer, you couldn't take it. I respect your determination and the fact that you are always a solution oriented person. Thus, you always succeed with all your projects. 👏
So today I didn´t watch your video until quite late in the evening, as it was my son´s birthday. He turned 42. It´s quite a different feel to watch your video in the evening with a cup of tea, while I watch the waves break endlessly. Still in my campervan in the north of Spain, where it is actually legal to park on the beach for up to a month. I´ll turn 70 years young next week and want to spend that day wiyh my daughter who lives here. So, Martijn, I always love your videos, but today´s was somehow even more special. Those drone shots of that white winter wonderland, beyond beautiful! I couldn´t help but laugh out loud about the fail with the dove tails. The sort of mistake we all make when we attempt something which is a little out of our depth. But you being Martijn make it perfect in the end. That pizza was surely better than the one I had in the posh pizzeria today. I laughed again when I saw you use a trowel to take the pizza out of the oven. What ingenuity! Oh and that apple pie!!!! After 50 years of baking pies there still are days when the dough tears while putting it into the mould. And you have no problems with it! It looked perfect when you got it out of the oven! To say ´not a bad pie´ is the understatement of the year! And it was great to see that the chickens got to enjoy the apple peels. I didn´t think it was a great idea to paint. varnish and glue the things in the same space where you are sleeping. And ,oh, the shots of the car sliding down that icy slope! I guess your mum didn´t enjoy seeing that. Themountain might say NO, but Martijn says YES, so yes it is. Healthy stubbornness, the way to make dreams and projects come true. Really look forward to seeing your bathroom and door frame next Sunday. Take care , we - the hundreds of thousands of followers you have - need you to be healthy and safe, so we can all have a share of that peaceful mountain life every Sunday!
This has been one of my most enjoyable filming's: watching a craftsman do his magic and live a simple life. My favorite part was, "failed..."and he throws it aside and moves on. What a great guy.,
The fact that you made a slight miscalculation while cutting the plank and chose to laugh it off speaks volumes about your character. It highlights the kind of mindset necessary to persevere through the solitary endeavor of bringing your life's project to fruition. Such resilience and equanimity cannot be feigned-it's inherent. My compliments on your poised spirit. Exceptional work indeed. Warm regards from Barcelona!
You give new meaning to self sufficiency. Homemade home, the Di Vinci style hoist for lifting the beams, the roof project, all the plumbing and electric, and today a new bathroom and homemade apple pie and pizza. I was hungry by the time your video ended. All I can say is thank you for sharing.
I love seeing the tips from the viewers - I learn a lot, not that I do anything with it but it’s the pleasure of the project and the community you’ve created. This channel is all goodness.
Grazie per le didascalie in italiano, sono una nonna e il mio inglese è scarso.Complimenti per I tuoi lavori. Conosco i luoghi dove vivi, da giovane li frequentavo e mi scalda il cuore rivederli.
Keep up the great work Martijn. All I could think of during this episode was my wife saying “you are not staining in the bedroom or glueing at the kitchen table!”
The little book of your sketches will become an heirloom one day Love your work. The rain is pouring down here and it's such a joy to sit and watch your videos on Monday (Australia).
So many lovely vignettes in this video: your room with the stove through the window, the snow-topped roof stones, your beautiful leather-bound sketch book …. Loved seeing you using your oven for baking. You did a great job with the apple cake. I think the last one from your videos was the one your Mom made and baked in an open fire. It was quite scary, I have to say, watching your car slide sideways down the mountain who said “no!” I so much enjoy watching you perform your daily construction and living tasks. Thank you Martijn.
Frohe Ostern allen hier! Gute Arbeit, schöne Aussicht! Schöne Grüße an euch alle von Günni from Germany (Augsburg Bavaria. The Lord has risen,Halleluja!
I have a friend who kaysked solo from California to Hawaii. I asked him once how he kept his sanity without human contact. He said he was so concerned with survivsal he didnt have time to think about anything else. Martijn cooks, has chores necessary just to survive and thats before he builds. Most people have never been without human contact for more than a day.or two. He seems content with what appears as a challenging choice in life and i think i understand .
Beautiful work, from the arched door frame to the apple cake! You never cease to amaze me! Thanks for another wonderful week! Stay safe, be grateful and peaceful! See you next week! 🤗💕
Why am I emotional every time these videos come on? They are so compelling…to me. The drone shots of the snowy covered valley took me soaring too. I just love this guys whole approach, attitude and calmness. Thank you you bring me such peace.💕❤️💕
Every week I feel as though my concept of what it means to be an artist, to live with such passion for every aspect of one’s life, is ever expanding. My senses become drunk with joy, to believe that we each have such power to create our vision, to create our own masterpiece of life for ourselves, with faith and hope and hard work. Thank you Martijn for giving me such hope to keep on moving forward in my own dream. You are a true art form in every way, creating, building and living. 🙏🕊💜
It's been quite a while since I saw someone make dovetail joinery. It's stronger than butt joints, much more stable. Using the grain of the woods keeps the structure from warping as much. Once the bathing area is done, it will make being at home much less stressful. I can't imagine trying to shower in an open air facility in winter. I have done it in summer years ago, wasn't my idea of something good. Your artistic eye makes a huge difference in how everything comes together. Thank you for reminding us what can be done very well.
Martjin laughing at himself at the cabinet mistake was such a real moment which solo creators can relate with, irrespective of profession or field. Love it, doing things on your own for the joy of it gives such purpose in one's life.
I live a few miles away. Piedmont is my region, the region in these videos. Maybe you don't know Pied means foot. This is the region at the foot of mountains. Everywhere in the plains, if you are at open place, the horizon is 330° snowy mountains 30° green hills, just now
Martijn, you are truly a Renaissance man! What a treat every Sunday to chill out (today especially watching the snow!) viewing your calming videos with relaxing nature sounds and music. I appreciate the occasional explanations you provide and how well you include us in what you are doing. Thank you for allowing us to come along for the experience. I've learned much from you.
Here in the area where I live (Southern part of Denmark) there is a really long historic tradition for arced doorways - Here the tradition was, simply, to install a 'normal' square, and slightly bigger, door behind it (the door opens inwards), mounted on the inside of the wall - Tradition often calls for painting the inside of the arc with lime (white) - The benefits are an easier build, the strength in the wood is optimal preserved, it makes for a (in my book) nice clean look and, most importantly, there is no space wasted on door frames.
My great grandfather, Garrett, was a Dutchman that immigrated to the States. He was an absolutely phenomenal carpenter. He built his home and all furnishings. I even have a cedar armoire that he made for my grandmother that has been handed down to my daughter. I never got to meet him, but watching your videos, it reminds me of the stories the family told of him. Studious, attention to details and self sufficient and generally very quiet. Many of the same qualities I witness in you.
Either your mom was a wonderful teacher or you are a wonderful seeker. I’m still working on my bread- making skills and you have conquered this art on a campfire and wood stove! I’m a mom of sons (38 & 41) and I guided them to cook & bake, sew & mend and explore their art, while their dad instilled a “can-do” spirit working with a variety of materials. Thank you for a glimpse of what my husband calls “his chickens “! Happy Easter and God bless!
I hate it when someone comes over and messes up my Sunday morning, watching Martijn's latest video! I literally have to bum-rush them out the door as fast as I can, so I can login and watch today's video. (Really not kidding.)
Martijn I am so amazed at the range of your talents. You make a beautiful threshold for the window then you go inside and make a delicious looking pizza. Your drawing are so well done and you build exactly the objects you draw. You make a arch door then a luscious apple pie. No wonder your videos are so popular. This episode has everything. Thank you for sharing. You are an inspiration. Ann from Va. USA 🇺🇸
You need to mount a winch on the bull bar on the front of your truck. It will help pulling stuff up that steep slope when you can't drive in the slush.
@@andymccabe6712 you’re a real piece of work, you are. Always with the snark directed to folks who obviously support Martijn and just want to contribute. Very unpleasant and unnecessary.

Martijn i'd like to thank you for the videos you're making, been following you since the beginning and your content is so refreshing nowadays. Even i have issues with short attention span and your videos are a cure. I love that you're taking it slow, like a movie it forces me to sit down and enjoy. I could watch you doing nothing for hours, you're one of the few channels that makes me feel like that. Especially on those kind of building videos where the norm seems to be to go as fast as possible witth timelaspses, sped up videos, cuts etc. Please never change ! Dank je well
The dovetail right of passage! I made the exact same mistake a thousand or so dovetails ago and think of it each time I set up for new ones. Showing you’re “fails” is the best and truest part of our maker’s experience. And the pie! Your mom would approve!
So relaxing to be with you after an early morning Easter Mass and a huge breakfast of blessed food with family all around. It settles the rush and hubbub and makes me appreciate this wonderful world God has made for us all to enjoy! Christ is Risen !
I have no knowledge of any woodwork and construction whatsoever, but I can watch Martijn's vlogs for hours and hours. It is somehow very relaxing yet interesting. Thank you and I cant wait till next Sunday.
I love the rain. Living here in a temperate rain forest where I never worry about clean drinking and cooking water is wonderful. Considering all those who struggle in this world because of a lack of clean, abundant water, I feel like I won the lottery. So did you, Martijn.
Yesterday I watched the movie Eight Mountains, beautiful Italian movie set in the mountains near the Gressons and today I was really looking forward to watching your even more beautiful video. Just stunning and so soothing ... Like being there on the mountain with you.
I love the constant chatter of your chickens as though they’ve waited all night to tell you their important things. The roofs covered in snow look like they are quilted from above. The apple pie looked delicious. A good way to transfer your pastry from work surface to baking dish is to put the end of the pastry over the rolling pin and work the pin under it a little mote then lift it that way. It’s less likely to fall apart. Although, yours stayed together beautifully Martin. There’s a lovely Christmassy feel to the episode tonight. I imagine the snow has all gone now. Roll on next Sunday to see your finished shower. It’s looking so homely in there.
The man is just simply amazing.. just love everything about him… he is extraordinary.. how proud his mom and dad must be for the beautiful man that he is .. a man of substance … I feel a special moment every time I watch him.. not just what he is creating but the man inside revealed each Sunday morning.. so glad I found him.. he touches my heart
Greetings Martijin. Glad to see that you’re keeping the Suzuki Jimny and it continues to perform its chores flawlessly. It definitely has been your go-to workhorse.
My Sunday morning Church service without a doubt!! Also so cute when he cut the dovetail joints incorrectly and he chuckled rather than get mad at himself. Even Martijn can make a mistake but he found a clever solution that worked, too!! Martijn is a living Zen Master!! ❤❤❤
I don’t know if those driving maneuvers looked more dangerous than they were, but it looked freaking dangerous to me seeing the car all side ways on a mountain 😅💪💪
As I watched you working on the door frame I heard some bird twittering and assumed it coming from the speaker, but I had to check, so I turned the volume off and noticed that it was actually coming from my balcony. Even my city surroundings sometimes synchronize with these videos. Love it!
A suggestion for your pie-making from a mountain baker, lol. Once you roll out the dough, flour the rolling pin. Starting at one edge, gently wrap the dough around the rolling pin like you would roll up a scroll around a rod. Then place the outer edge just past the opposite edge of the pie plate and unroll the dough towards you.
Its looking amazing Martijn as usual, cant wait to see the finished look. Your white wonderland is truly spectacular. The chickens are looking so relaxed and happy again. Well done.
Thank you for your honesty, Martijn. When you lined up the joints for the bathroom cabinet and they didn't match, well we have all been there. Best to just laugh and game on.
Someday soon you will be done, and I know how proud you will be. Your home is looking great now.pretty soon new planting will happen and you will get some nice fruits and vegetables to enjoy. I really enjoy watching your videos, and for an old gal, gives me something to watch, thank you
19:26 was a profound moment for me! The smile on Martijn's face. The recognition that was identical to all the carpentry fails I've ever had, but this time, from someone who I look up to as my teacher, made me feel such a part of the human race. Leaving that in the edit did so much good. I don't feel nearly as much of a failure now that I know Martijn can fail in the same way. We're all just learning. And we can learn like Martijn, with a look of bemusement and humor, before starting at it again.
I'm so impressed by how you handle challenges, like clearing snow and crafting door frames. It's cool to see your bathroom project coming together with vintage stuff and recycled materials!

Your home is so beautiful and has such a cozy feel . I know you do a lot of research , but without your natural talent to just " know " what's right , it wouldn't be as wonderful Way to go Martijn !!😊
There is so many good vibes in the cabin. The comfort of the bed by the fire, the sound of the rain on the skylight, etc. The smell of that apple pie baking in the cabin must have been phenomenal! Happy Easter to you and Yohan, I hope I spelled that correctly. You are blessed to be in that environment on the mountains, peaceful habitat.
I have followed you from the beginning of the Alpine adventure and have learn much from your patience, craftsmanship, and skill. It has given me confidence to do jobs I never would have dreamed of tackling since my husband past 3 years ago. I am 73 and old enough to be your grandma…BUT I screamed at the tv, NO NO, No when you almost rolled the car down the mountain! You got it out of course, but you almost gave this old lady a heart attach! So enjoy your videos and your artistry. Keep up the wonderful work and BE CAREFUL!👏👏👏
I don't think you realize how many people would love to live the way you do , To sit on the rocks and simply enjoy the silence, or to sit by the fire and have a coffee or a tea .The wolves howling does it for me ,,I LOVE that , You are blessed to be certain
I have always thought that putting the stone roof together and all the guys who helped was the most heroic, mind-boggling task was accomplished so far! 😅 Your craftsmanship is beautiful. You are truly a master! Take care!
Never thought of it before but the roof when covered in snow looks like scales of some snow snake, lizard or dragon. Keep up the great work Martijn. You are a inspiration to us all
Thank you Martijn for sharing so much with us…it’s so exciting to see it all coming together now. I just love to see you cooking from scratch 😊 Have a great upcoming week…many blessings to you 💜🙏💜
Two things really stood out today, the view from outside the window into the room with fire, and the superb Dutch apple pie.I was taught by my Dutch friend how to make a truely traditional pie oh the smell and the memories.Thank you

Every time Martijn turns on a tap I remember the months of digging and laying of pipes it took to achieve that.
It’s amazing when you think of all Martijn’s accomplishments 😮
My dad used to say, every time you turn a faucet and water comes out its a miracle, my eyes rolling, yeah, Dad... Now I appreciate that wisdom and appreciation of someone's work for such a valuable convenience..
Watching these videos is like reading a good book on a comfy sofa. You're videography catches the mountain's peace while crafting that amazing home.
😇☺
yes he needs some help eating all that food!
That was a smart fail! (19.26) Showing your shortcoming is a credit to your personality. Well done.
Its 11.30pm on Australia's Gold Coast, neighbourhood is quiet, kitchen is clean, my unit tidy, clothes washing drying , i've had my bath and now in bed, content, about to watch Martijn weekly installment of renovating his Italian Alps farm.
The sweet things in life.
Now, sunrise in Germany. It is7.30
Many greetings to all Coalas
I wake up Sunday to morning coffee and a visit with Martijn in the Italian Alps! How cool it is that people watch from all over the world in very different environments to enjoy the same moments in the alps. I watch from The prairies Canada
Going to be a beautiful bathroom!
Ah! Black Bushmills Whiskey. Nothing better, greetings from Ireland.
That little Jimny has been a real good friend - just keeps giving!
Always there when he needs it!
Thx (again) for this weekly glimp into you life!
The patience itself is rare skill. The cabinet with the locked edges... Respect.
Patience, yes, and a smile when discovering the error--extremely rare!
His patience is his brand, basically. His patience for quality and detail is what makes this project more than a DIY refurb - its art!
The term is "dovetailed".
And he doesn’t take No for an answer from the mountain 🏔️! Eventually he got that trailer where he wanted it 🎉😂!
Where there’s a will there’s a way
So today I didn´t watch your video until quite late in the evening, as it was my son´s birthday.
I like that little laugh when you did a mistake
This has been one of my most enjoyable filming's: watching a craftsman do his magic and live a simple life. My favorite part was, "failed..."and he throws it aside and moves on. What a great guy.,
Loved that you included the dovetail fail. 🙌🏼 🤣
Agree with everything you said, particularly the getting hungry...thank you, once again, Martijn...😂🥰😂
Thank you for keeping the fails in the final video. Everyone makes mistakes and letting your viewers see them happen is refreshingly humble.
I love seeing the tips from the viewers - I learn a lot, not that I do anything with it but it’s the pleasure of the project and the community you’ve created. This channel is all goodness.

Thankyou for more perfectly naming this day!! Easter never quite did it for me and I never knew it until now 🙏
Why am I emotional every time these videos come on?
Every episode for months I think “That poor table saw, how can it survive out there in the weather?” Such a treat to see it still survives.
And the outdoor kitchen fridge!! 😉
I loved the drone shot of the two cabin roofs in the snow, like a beautiful piece of art. Thank you.
I had to rewind and gaze at that shot to appreciate the beauty of it...I see a dragons back and also a small dragon face at the top 🐲❄️❣️
Good morning from New England! I'm always in awe of the mountain views you have. Thanks for another amazing video, Martijn.
You're a beautiful human being, Martijn...inside and out.
The drone shot of that mountain covered in snow is so beautiful.
The Dutch Apple Pie!! It was only a matter of time.
Yes, learnt at Mama’s knee! ❤️
The view of the glowing fireplace thru the window as you worked on the stones outside just made me all happy. What a home you are creating.
USA 🇺🇸

Every single week without fail, my wife and I look forward to your Sunday video from Long Beach, CA. Everything you do is incredible.
You always prove the old saying, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way! Your will is strong!

19:24 - congratulations on not swearing in any language when you brought the two pieces together! ;-)
Love it!
Happy eastern to you all
Is that a typo. 😂
Happy Easter.
And to you and yours.
Ha!...you don't need to live in the mountains to know THAT old trick ....!!!
😊

19:26 was a profound moment for me! The smile on Martijn's face. The recognition that was identical to all the carpentry fails I've ever had, but this time, from someone who I look up to as my teacher, made me feel such a part of the human race. Leaving that in the edit did so much good. I don't feel nearly as much of a failure now that I know Martijn can fail in the same way. We're all just learning. And we can learn like Martijn, with a look of bemusement and humor, before starting at it again.
