Having met Martijn when helping him replace the beams on his cabin (Episode #30), I can confidently say I learned a lot from him. Even tough it was only for a day, I had a chance to see someone deeply involved in his project and passionate about his way of life. I'm grateful for his generosity and I'm honoured to have a piece of me in that cabin. Great work and good luck Nathaniel!
I watch Martijn every Sunday morning with my breakfast, it is the highlight of my week. I am a 67 year old lady now but I grew up off the grid and am naturally self sufficient. I work outside on my property almost daily, depending on the weather. Snow days are not my favorite but I still have to get out and take care of the animals. Loneliness was something I went through as a young adult. I longed for and yearned for company. But when I was a child I was alone almost all the time, having chosen to ride a horse by myself most days. Of course, I had the horse. Now, I work on this property in solitude, all day. I love being alone. I can think. I am an artist and so naturally creative but this lifestyle has made me even more creative in different ways. There is something to be said for being alone. I look forward to watching your channel, now, as well.
I do, too. It's a part of my Sunday morning routine and gives me a calm start to the day. I will say that when you were traveling there and said "Can you imagine driving this every time you go home", I think you missed the point. Martijn lives and works there so he doesn't travel that road daily. My impression is that he goes down the mountain maybe once a week especially now that he's more established.
Martjin Doolaard is a hero, I have followed him for years now, from the time he was around the world in his bike until now, improving his two stone cabins and his whole property as a matter of fact, very successful and inspirational. Nathaniel you found the best guy to take advice from for your project! Enjoy it and Congrats!
This was such a great interview Nathaniel, and bravo for showing us a more personal side of Martijn! I have been following his channel since the beginning of his current project and this is the most I have ever seen him talk and share about his views on things ... and so many wonderful shots of him too! Yep, his channel is mostly focused on his projects which I love, but it was nice to see him laughing and sharing. I also really love how you weaved all the pieces together, great story telling!

Nate, this was epic. I have been following Martjin for years, Sunday is not complete without his weekly video, but you've showed me a wonderful new side of his personality. It kind of completes the picture his videos portray of him. Thank you.
Lovely to see Martijn from an outside perspective! Like so many in the comments below, he's easily my favorite UA-camr and I've followed him from the beginning. He spoke more openly with you than he normally does on his channel, where he lets his beautiful cinematography and the work at hand speak for themselves, which is one of the reasons his channel is so popular. There's a quietness, an almost zen quality to his episodes. Thanks for the inside view!
I really liked that video. You are a good storyteller. I’m 58, female and I did a lot of scary exciting things in my life. One of them moving to Alaska and live alone in the middle of the forest for now 11 years. My project comes also to a end soon, going back to my home country and buy a camping trailer and find the most beautiful camping ground to stay there as long I can do it. When you get older is not about how many possessions you have. It’s not important anymore. It’s all about your memories, and living in the moment. Life is short! It’s all about to do the first step .. the rest will follow. .. and you did that, the first step.
Martijn is an inspiration, and his wisdom supports us on what we fear, that is not to fear. I'm near 60 years and I am longing for a simple life away from the hustle and bustle of the modern lifestyle. I want to be a child again, with chickens in the yard, picking fruit from trees, and learning to make things for my own happiness. Martijn is doing it right, we ought to go back to a simpler way of living, in a community of people with like minded ways. I wish you luck with your new life shift, I hope to join a smaller community in the near future. I believe that life is too short, especially as we age.
Martijn is as cool as they come, when he was just beginning his YT journey we wrote back and forth about living in the mountains (I live in as remote part of the PNW). It is easy to chat with him being that we have both traveled for extended periods of time and now are both trying to build a new life in places where some think it is hard to build. Find what motivates you and do your best to see it through.
As in most of the comments below, I have watched Martijn for years - it was so good to see him smile and laugh a lot - sometimes he barely talks at all in his videos. Well done for bringing out a more animated Martijn.
I LOVED this. Have been following Martjin for a few years now and have read his book (two years on a bike). I love talking about and doing things I find scary. I always tell my kids: it's totally ok to be afraid. To fear something. And then tame it. We are in control, not our fear.
Thank you for featuring Martijn! Isn't he an amazing soul! I hope you featuring his channel will expand his channel because he really deserves more views!
Martin is such a wise and amazing human being. I admire his courage and generosity in sharing his experience and learnings with his audience. I love his philosophy of starting a project knowing that it will and should end at some point. And then just move on to the next and the next. Love him.
I love Nathaniel. He's so creative... Free soul... Living his life like he wants. He's my inspiration. He's videos keep me going. That one day I'll have a wonderful life like this and meeting even more wonderful people.
Well he can fuckin afford to. You can't live like that on a shoestring budget. And despite the "it's more important to be liked than to have money" maybe you dont want to have to make nice to everyone to get housed and fed etc.
He comes from a wealthy background, doesn't have a family to look after nor has to work everyday to make ends meet like most people... it's quite easy to be a "free spirit" this way.
@@janebaker966 @soundscape26 no doubt nathaniel is incredibly lucky and privileged but yall just sound salty. there is the original commenter expressing inspiration, having dreams and the will to pursue them - a beautiful thing. And you guys just can't stand that. Have to tear both him and nathaniel down because they are choosing to use whatever they have to build the life they want. The world is unfair- no doubt, but if you're going to be so negative just keep it to yourself, try watching creators you actually identify with, or try expressing your frustration where it actually counts.
"Every good thing has to end, at the right time". Something we all know and yet so hard to remember while we're living an experience. I think it takes so much courage to end things "at the right time" because it's exactly when you're living at your best that you should change, before it's too late and you start ruining your experience. So inspiring, thank you guys
Yes there is truth in that; but also we tend to race forward in life chasing the next thing. So I think that it is also important to sit and celebrate your success in the good times in life. It's a moment to rest from the journey. And wait for the feeling of restlessness to guide you to the next adventure, only after both things have happened is it the right time to end a good thing and start the next. Of course life often has other ideas, and personally things rarely get to 'good' before challenges are thrown in my path and I have to scramble to survive.
Thanks, Nathaniel - there's a lot of wisdom in that interview. And more than I've ever heard from Martijn before, at one time, despite watching ALL of his videos. I wish you well with your own project and I hope you'll love living in the country. It's hard to beat. :-)
The best I’ve seen in awhile. Life lessons from a super cool man living his life on his own terms. A beautiful place with extraordinary views. Been watching this man when his cottages were not even livable. Amazing work ethic and talent. Good luck on your current journey. 🍀✨
This is the most I've heard from Martijn at once. He's a very interesting man and I've really enjoyed his channel for a while now. Glad you got the chance to work and learn from him. Good luck on your projects.
Thanks for doing such a great interview video with my favourite UA-camr. I've watched Martijn's videos since he first bought the mountain property and love his weekly videos so much. They are such beautifully filmed, edited and thoughtful videos and my fave Sunday activity, watching what he's been up to during the week. The thought of him ending the project has been on my mind, wondering what he'll do with himself. What an interesting and thoughtful guy he is. Thanks for sharing your trip to visit the man in the mountains.
Thanks for this interview. I'm 78 and have just had a period of inactivity following surgery and was having some difficulty getting going again. This interview reminded of the mindset I needed to reconnect with. I prefer to use the word "challenging" rather than scary for new or difficult situations because it suggests that, whilst I will have to find new strength or skills to deal with them, it is both possible and rewarding.
I got so excited when I saw Martijn's house at the end of your last video. I've been following him for years ever since I watched his "Two Years on a Bike" series where he biked from Vancouver to Patagonia. It was so inspiring and I loved the way he filmed his videos. So excited to see you two in the same video! ❤
I think there is a difference between being afraid, deeply afraid because you don't have the resources for life; and being excited for a new challenge in life where you feel that you have the strength and resources to draw on (a degree of privilege). The former is debilitating and the later is empowering.
Brilliant video. This is the kind of content I watch fully from beginning to end these days on UA-cam. It doesn't feel like the creator is trying to forcefully retain my attention. Just pure intellectual and artistic stimulation. Thank you, Nathaniel!
I've been following Martijn for a long while and seeing him talking about his past, about how life has changed and how he thinks and reflects about these changes is fascinating. Thanks for giving these thoughts more light! Good luck with the house
Bravo!!! This is a great episode. I am a kind of person who is always stressed out about the process instead of enjoying the journey. I have to keep reminding myself that life has no destination because it is always changing and evolving. I especially like the way Martijn talks about endings. Thank you for this episode!!
Two of my favorite channels have joined. I love this. Nathaniel you are the only guy so far who pronounces Martijn the Dutch way. Wish you strength and inspiration to tackle your house renovation. Love from a Dutch old lady in California . Wish I lived in France. ❤❤
Damn thats something. I have been following Martijns Project from the beginning, and it has been inspiring all the way. But this is great especially, because I always enjoyed it even more than building and stuff when he was talking about the whole idea, his background and the whole journey. Such a great guy to have a conversation with at a bonfire…
Thanks for that wonderful interview with Martijn. I've watched him for years. He's truly kind, inspirational, motivational, and talented. Yes, he's learned a lot on his own over the years, as I'm sure you will as well. When his story or journey comes to an end, it will be sad, like losing a friend Even though I've never met him, his videos are personal parts of him he shares with all of us. I'm grateful for that. He shows a side of life that most people do not see, that is, appreciation of nature and time well spent. He is truly a blessed man.
Wow! Thank you for sharing your journey. I have been a devoted watcher of Martijn's Italian Alps journey since the beginning. He is a calming presence in a sea of chaos. Ciao
Love the description of how confidence is only ever acquired sort of retroactively without realizing it. You can't acquire it directly but only indirectly through anxious short-term moves toward discomfort great convo and video
Something very funny happened ! I have been watching Martijn for few yrs now with a friend . Then few months back he introduced me to Nathaniel’s videos . Just now I saw this new video of Nathaniel and was so surprised to see he went to see Martijn . 8min into watching the video my friend who was in his house texted me about him about to watch Nathaniel’s video …. We were laughing so much ! Love this crossing of situations ❤loving the videos . Thank you 🙏
Thank you, so glad to know more about Martjin, I look forward to watching him each week, it’s nice to hear about his bicycle journey and see how it influences his work on the restoration of his houses ☮️
Martijn is my Sunday celebration of the small things in life. His eye for beauty is astounding. Thank you for highlighting him! Nice to have an extra visit with him where he is really engaged in a conversation. Not his usual style but lovely to hear him.
Hello. It is nice to meet u. I have truly enjoyed this video and thou I have watched all the Italian alps videos with Martijn..u know he usually doesn't talk much in them and I like that about him too but I heard alot of things in the conversations between the three of u that I needed to hear. Thank u so much. I will b watching your videos too now. Wish u well
This was an excellent video. Having been a weekly watcher of Martijn for the past two years, it was great to hear so much from him. If you watch his videos, you know he is a man of few words. He has a wealth of knowledge, wisdom, and experience to share. I will be following your journey, as well. ✌️
Wow,this is so thought-provoking.My appreciation of Martijn continues each time I watch him.A very well narrated account of your time in the company of Martijn, and you definitely captured beautiful messages with so much meaning.❤
Fantastic video. The wisdom and depth from all of you, especially Martijn, is phenomenal. I’ve watched Martijn since his very first vlog episode building his homestead, and his bike adventures before that, but you showed us another, more in-depth side of him. Thank you, Nathaniel and Lucas! This episode should be nominated for an award and then win it!
I am so jealous of your new project. The adventures you go on are so interesting to watch, you craft the film process beautifully. Thank you Nathaniel and thank you for introducing us to such a beautiful soul, Martijn. I backpacked when I was younger, the best days of my life. Sadly I am now restricted to home due to illness at the age of 51. People like you sharing their stories (and books) keep me in such a good place. Thank you 🙏
This guy is so intelligent and down to earth and just beautiful. I loved and relished everything he said because it all rang true for me personally. And what he said about the gym is so on point and true too and I laughed. That wasn't something I even considered, about having something to show. I mean you sculpt and work on your body and can show that but its very different from when you actually built something. That was quite beautiful I think. Thanks for sharing Nathaniel Drew. Loved this. Keep searching my friend, as I am doing too. I put my joy into my work and try to find new and different ways to do and spice things up. When the day is hard go watch a movie, read a book, enjoy some delicious coffee and get right back up and out there the next day and try again. Never give up, keep pushing through and trying. Hugs.
Hi, Nathaniel! I have been following you for a few years by now and I've watch almost all of your latest stories. I just want to say thank you for showing your thought process and how you are dealing with life. Most of your videos resonated with me, but this last series after leaving Paris caught me by surprise as I was also in the middle of a project to leave a big capital city in the south of Brazil (Curitiba) to go live nearby the beach (Praia do Rosa), amongst other destinations. Currently I'm in the final act of my digital nomad lifestyle where I'm travelling around Brazil carrying my bike. This video resonated deeper than ever with me and helped me process a lot of things that are going on right now inside of me. The lessons you are learning are the same I am learning, and the knowledge Martijn shared seems really to just fit in perfectly with what we are experiencing, even so our lives are vastly different. He just puts it out with honesty and very eloquently, with a lot of wisdom to it. Thank you for doing what you do. Thank you Martijn. Love you!
Thank you for this. I’ve learned more about Martijn in this video than in the years I’ve been following him. Well, not new things but his articulation of things I’d guessed at.
Brother, you seem to be a few years younger than me, but through your insecurity you show wisdom beyond your years. Thanks for this interview with Martijn, I am inspired by his work as well and in the process of leaving London to return to my roots, incidentally not very far away from that part of the Italian Alps. Take care!
You know that feeling you have when you watch a video like this and time is just flying? It could be 5 minutes long or an hour long, you are just enjoying the beauty shown and the kind and motivating words. I feel like this everytime watching your videos or Martijn's. I met him personally helping for a day, it was more than two years ago yet I remember it like yesterday; his personality, like yours, is source of ispiration for me. Have a great work with the new project!
thank you for this video! I watch martijn every week and love his channel....and this helped a lot for filling in the gaps in a way....he is a man of few words....but its geat to hear him speak,,,,,really well done....
Some very sage advice. So much of our confidence is built on what we have done. Scary is always potentially there, it is what we choose to do with it. I spent 11 years cycling the world, then working around the world and now am settled in rural France, doing up my own wee home by myself. My recommendation, for what it's worth, take your time. Take your time settling in, figuring out what you want from the house, meeting neighbours, learning and even enjoy those scary moments. It's rural France also, things don't happen fast here. And that in itself is a wonder to be enjoyed.
On a similar journey and the end of my dream-to get here to this new country and find a home away from the city- was definitely without ceremony. But I feel a new one is quietly peaking from just the horizon; waiting on me to arrive. And that, is always exciting 🎉!
My father and I moved to the French Alps 10 years ago after spending both mine and his whole life living in London, we moved to a small comune in the Savoie region and we live in a village of 22 people, I felt more alone when I was in London than I do know, the sense of community in this smaller areas is truly powerful because you all know eachother personally and we all help eachother, whether its giving someone a ride to the closest town (7km away), or helping the local farmer catch his cows that have escaped again, there is a real sense of belonging in small villages and in the "countryside". its really beautiful.
And, thank you for sharing the beginning of your journey. We will all see you grow your wisdom. I remember when you visited Martijn. Someday I hope to meet Martijn, too. To see Martijn in a different context, as you so masterfully created in this video, has brought me more insight into this man. Your “interview” has created an opportunity for all of us, as it has for you, to gather ways of thought to carry out our journeys. John in Bethel, Missouri. USA
I’ve been watching your show for awhile. Now your dads and moms they are great❤️👍. You have a way of connecting with people. You are a good listener and are sincerely interested in their story, journey and life. Many people are all about talking about their self and not truly listening to others. People open up to you I believe because of that fact. Keep doing what you’re doing. Very interesting and inspirational. Side note I started watching Martijin Doolard awhile back I was very intrigued.
So proud of you, Nathaniel - exploring, living your life breaking through the boundaries of your comfort zones. That's where growth, excitement, joy comes from.... feel the fear and do it anyway!
Love your wording. Martijn is a great man! I watch his episodes each week diligently. Calling someone born below sea level a man in the mountains. Funny!
I have been watching Martin for awhile now. I recall when you and Lucas showed up. I did not realize that it was part of your own journey. I am so proud of you to take his experiences, his knowledge and apply it to your own journey. Life is a Journey, from birth to death. Don’t rush it, but do not let it pass you by. Godspeed.
So Thankful and Grateful that you have shared your conversation with Martijn. I saw your visit to Martijn’s paradise. Now you’ve completed a look at the man, personal experience of the journey. Very inspirational💚
Nathan, my favourite philosopher on the internet! And so beautifully filmed. Talks with such an interesting man (I have been following Martijn for quite some time, also his neighbour the catholic priest). Thank you for sharing your thoughts in such an aesthetic way again. 🙏🏻
21:36 - endings and beginnings. death and life. rebirth. 23:12 - "celebration" of an ending is not exciting, it's usually a little bit sad. but looking back on the memories are the celebration.
I just finished watching Episode 3 and this one. I'm thrilled that you're doing your own editing so that your videos are entirely your own, your perspective, your story. I'm here for it. And I love the story you're telling. Thank you for letting us in on the ride of your life.... it's a beauty!
wow ! it feels like a privilege to watch this video :) I've just subscribed to this channel today because well I'm in France too and I want to move to countryside too... and I just really like how you film things... your videos are telling the stories I want to hear God bless you
Great piece, Nathanial! You are a master at your art! I first saw you when you were visiting Martijn. It's good to know a little more about your journey and to see Martijn through your lens. Thank you! Have fun and be a little scared!
Been following Martijn since the beginning of this project. This week his video was a Q&A, I was disappointed I'd missed the opportunity to ask him a couple of questions. Fortunately this video popped up as a suggestion at the end of the episode and you asked all the questions I had thought of. This video was awesome and really well made. Truly inspiring wisdom and advice. I subscribed to your channel immediately after and look forward to watching your journey. Good luck..
Thanks for sharing. I love his videos too because they expose a calm way of evolving and developing without any kind of rush. Just deep relaxing and living in the moment 🙏
Nathaniel, something very special happens to me around your content and your life choices. Im argentinian and i found your channel when i was daydreaming about moving to paris. A year later, you did. I felt so happy for you, i almost felt like i could experience through your content and be just as pleased, since i wasnt gonna be able to afford it anytime soon. The pandemic took a toll on my mental health for sure, and your videos were a safe space, a breath of fresh air. I scaped the city as soon as i could after the pandemic, being extremely lucky to find love and a home in the heart of cordobas las sierras. I followed your channel and i gotta admit, i was hoping you'd fell in love with the countryside lifestyle... i had the strange calming sense that you'd get out there eventually. I feel lucky to have found your content, your worldview amazes me every time.

I just love watching Martin's videos every week. He is a legend and so inspiring. You can do hard things
he is legend............
Martijn je LEGENDA je to fantastický rozhovor a moc za něj děkuji.
`It's not about the destination, it's about the journey`
Thanks, Nathaniel - there's a lot of wisdom in that interview. And more than I've ever heard from Martijn before, at one time, despite watching ALL of his videos. I wish you well with your own project and I hope you'll love living in the country. It's hard to beat. :-)
The best I’ve seen in awhile. Life lessons from a super cool man living his life on his own terms.
A beautiful place with extraordinary views. Been watching this man when his cottages were not even livable. Amazing work ethic and talent.
Good luck on your current journey. 🍀✨
Man in the mountains is an absolute legend, his yb is one of the most inspiring ones for sure
I've been watching Martijn's channel for several years. He's awesome.
Have followed Martin since day one in the mountains. He is an old soul with lots of good advice.
Old soul? What does that even mean? Esoteric pseudiospiritual non-sense?
I got so excited when I saw Martijn's house at the end of your last video. I've been following him for years ever since I watched his "Two Years on a Bike" series where he biked from Vancouver to Patagonia. It was so inspiring and I loved the way he filmed his videos. So excited to see you two in the same video! ❤
My Sundays begin with Martijn. I enjoyed your conversation with him.
"Being afraid and feeling alive seem inextricably linked for me"
You're right. Damn that hits.
It did NOT have to be this way.
I think there is a difference between being afraid, deeply afraid because you don't have the resources for life; and being excited for a new challenge in life where you feel that you have the strength and resources to draw on (a degree of privilege). The former is debilitating and the later is empowering.
Thank you! I really enjoyed that. I've watch Martijn since the beginning of his Italian alps purchase.
Huge Martijn Fan. Great interview. Respect his work and his point of view on life. Excited to now follow your work as well.
You can't acquire it directly but only indirectly through anxious short-term moves toward discomfort
great convo and video
This video gave me a profound sense of peace. Thanks for getting out there and making this, truly a joy to watch. I loved Martijn's book.
Thank you for this episode. I’ve followed Martjin for years now. Awesome seeing this perspective
loving this.. I have been on this homestead 46 years this year..a widow alone for the last 14
Thanks for sharing. Martijn is dear to me. Watched every episode of his endeavours. I like your attitude on things. I wish you good luck.
I'm a big Martjin D fan -- never miss a show!
You did a beautiful job of this, Nathaniel, really capturing the essence of Martijn. I wish you well with your project.❤️🇨🇦
I have been watching Martijn for years, he is a nice, kind , gentle soul. I "found" you today so I will embark on your journey as well. Good luck
It’s about the journey. Not the goal. A cliché is there for a reason. Because it’s true.
Very interesting!!! Thank you and Martijn!
Martijn is my Sunday celebration of the small things in life. His eye for beauty is astounding. Thank you for highlighting him! Nice to have an extra visit with him where he is really engaged in a conversation. Not his usual style but lovely to hear him.
Big fan of you both. Very excited to watch this.
Hugs.
This is absolutely fantastic! I followed Martijn immediately and now I'm watching all of his videos from Day 1 in the Alps! Fascinating!

Life is a paradox that can be both long and short. Like the house project, you take it day by day.
Seems this man has truly cracked the code on how to live a rich, beautiful life
I’ve been watching your show for awhile.
Nothing dies in fall. It hibernates or goes to seed.Death is an illusion, we ourselves live on in the afterlife towards next incarnation.
Two incredible humans I would never expect to see here together, what a time to be alive
its funny i remember nathaniels episode now....i have seen him before on youtube but didnt make the full connection until just now haha
Thank you for letting us in on the ride of your life.... it's a beauty!
wow ! it feels like a privilege to watch this video :) I've just subscribed to this channel today because well I'm in France too and I want to move to countryside too... and I just really like how you film things... your videos are telling the stories I want to hear
God bless you
We’ve been following his channel for a couple of years now :) love it! ❤
Nice to have these more detailed insights into his thinking. Best wishes on your own project as well.
I enjoyed that very much since I watch Martijn every week. It gives me inside of the person. Thank you.
Now this is funny. 2 (as I thought, completely unrelated) channels that I have watched for years coming together😊
Great video. I’ve seen every episode of Martijn’s. A wonderful journey. Looking forward to watching yours. Cheers from Oklahoma USA!
Great piece, Nathanial! You are a master at your art! I first saw you when you were visiting Martijn. It's good to know a little more about your journey and to see Martijn through your lens. Thank you! Have fun and be a little scared!
This is the most I've heard Martijn speak! Amazing interview and dialog I loved it!
Found this while over thinking about my big move from Texas to Australia… all i can say is thank you for sharing
Wow, you will love Australia. So big, so many opportunites, great scenery (sounds a bit like Texas lol, but it'll be great!)
Glad to finally see your perspective of your experience at Martijn’s home as I’ve been following both of your channels for years. 😊. Thanks for sharing (and hope you enjoyed the tree swing)
