How to make a soju watermelon cocktail!
These are very popular in Korean bars in America. They're made with soju, which is the #1 distilled beverage in Korea but not well known to the rest of the world. If you can't find soju in a Koreatown near you, you can substitute it with vodka.
The fun thing about subak soju is that you can use the blended flesh of the watermelon to make your drink and use the watermelon shell to serve it in -- nothing is wasted!

I learned that the best way to find a good watermelon is to look for the one with the big yellow spot because that means that it has ripened well in the field. It works every time for me now!!! 🍉

For kids instead of adding the liquor, you could Sierra Mist, Sprite, or 7up.

I adore you, Maangchi--always so cheerful and full of good ideas. I tried making ice cubes for this a day ahead of time, out of the watermelon puree, so the soju isn't diluted with nasty old water. This is a great summertime party treat. Thanks for sharing it!

what i did when i made this was I blended some extra watermelon juice, skimmed it, then froze the extra juice in ice cube trys and used that instead of ice cubes that way it didn't get watery after the ice melted. loved the recipe maangchi only i used vodka because i couldn't find soju near my area.

Actually its so great too with water melon and sprite. instead of soju
The sprite make feels like its more colder, and watermelon make sprite more feel sparkle. In the summer with these. No problem.
another thing that would be great for kids is to blend the watermelon and mix it with sprite or 7up.

A great trick for making your watermelon cocktail sit upright: after scooping out the flesh, flip it over and cut a small, thin slice off of the bottom (not enough to make a hole in the bottom). This will make a small plane on the bottom and keep it from rolling around.

For kids, you can do the same process but leave out the alcohol and you have Watermelon Agua Fresca! (Add a little sugar if the melon isn't sweet)

yes, you can. It's called subak hwachae (수박화채) in Korean.
I tried this when I went to a korean restaurant in Virginia a few months ago. Out of the 3 of us at the table I ended up drinking the most and got tipsy! LOL. Was soo soo good, I can't stress how delicious it was. I loove watermelon.

Can't get much lighter than vodka. Plus vodka goes with everything. You could always use a flavored schnapps like watermelon schnapps if you wanted it to be less potent with less alcohol. If you make this with vodka, you should probably half the amount of vodka, and use 2 cups, because vodka has around double the alcohol content as soju :)
I agree, four cups of Vodka would put the party under the table!
Actually, Soju tastes better than Vodka. I LOVE SOJU!! I think it tastes like coconut water.
