I will never forget the joy on my black friends faces as we gathered at my home to watch the inauguration. I felt privileged to be in their company and be a part of such a historic moment. I will NEVER forget it.

You can't imagine what an amazing time to be alive this was. People were cheering in the streets and hugging each other. My (white) grandparent who marched for civil rights broke down in tears. They were both over 90 years of age at the time. Everyone wept in gratitude. It was just incredible.

I live in Montgomery, AL. About 50 miles from Selma. Several years ago I participated in a Selma to Montgomery march. Some called it a re-enactment, but for the 100+ youth that participated, we considered it to be reconciliation. What is failed to be mentioned here in this video is the poverty and violence that still ravages Selma. The place has no leadership, no direction. Its time for ppl there to step up, and stop being remembered simply for "Bloody Sunday". Your city is dying. Do something!

Not all republican's are racist. I am a republican, not a racist. There is a difference. I voted for McCain, not because of skin but, because of the issue's. Obama is our president as of 09, and we all must stand behind him and hope he does good with our country.Obama won because of his charm, great speaking skills, and the majority of the country thought he could do better. I guess what I am saying, is not all republicans are racists. Don't group them together please!

A driver is stopped in traffic on US 95 outside of Washington. Suddenly a man knocks on the window.
"What's the hold up?" the driver asks,
    rolling down the window.
"Terrorists have kidnapped George Bush, Don Rumsfeld & Dick Cheney. They're asking for a $10 million ransome or they'll douse them with gasoline and set them on fire. We're going from car to car, taking up a collection."
The driver asks: "On average, how much is everyone giving?"
"Ohh" the guy says. "About a gallon."

"Besides, do you really want a few judges deciding what the whole state should do?" Actually that's kind of a significant role they have in a democracy. Throughout history there have been times when the majority have turned on the minority - so the judges and the courts are there to secure their rights from the 'tyranny of the majority'. Goohuman, you should read some history books sometime. It'll make you look less ignorant.

See jebulon, this actually would be a rather apt time for one of those labels.
Anyway cub, back in the 1960s a biracial man could never have been elected president, that is a testament to progress. Now I didn't vote for him because of his race, but I am pleased that people didn't vote against him because of race. That shows that this IS a triumph of the civil rights era, where he was judged by his character, not his skin.

A student of mine earlier this year - a native Afghan - worked for years with Afghan children who had lost limbs. Yes, the U.S. has used cluster bombs in Afghanistan.
As a nation, we need to stop making war, plain and simple. But, because our economy is so bound up with defense, many Americans believe that we HAVE to make use of all of the bombs and war materiel that we produce each year. There's no reason for it. We could have an economy based on any number of things besides war.

The duties of the White House Chief of Staff vary greatly from one administration to another. However, the chief of staff has been responsible for overseeing the actions of the White House staff, managing the president's schedule, and deciding who is allowed to meet with the president. Because of these duties, the Chief of Staff has at various times been dubbed "The Gatekeeper" and "The Co-President".

Socialism in itself is not at all a bad thing. It's a system that merely means that the whole of the community looks out for all of it's members.
That's a good thing. We are our brother's keeper and denial is generally about selfishness and greed.( Really a reflection of spiritual insufficiency).
Is Obama a socialist? I think that the Democratic mindset is supposed to be about social responsibility.
The socialist stuff as an insult is really about having no other weapon. That's desperation.

Yes. Remember that Martin Luther King spoke out passionately against the Vietnam War. In effect, he said the same things that Jeremiah Wright said about the U.S. And we have a Federal holiday to commemorate King's birth! Collectively, America seems to have a selective memory about many things. The full breadth of Dr. King's work and the content of his speeches are two of those things.

They wouldn't have suffered any major injustices and would have no obligation to prevent those injustices from happening again. If no one ever suffered injustice at the hand of a majority or another group, the world really would be a better place. But as it stands, people have suffered injustice and are still trying to overcome some of the bigotry that lead to it.

"Is that tactic anything like labeling people racist..."
Depends, if someone says "I'm not voting for obama" and someone labels him "racist", then it is no different, if someone says "I'm not voting for obama because he hates white people/is a muslim/is gay (closet)/loves jews/is black" then no, it's rather different.
The terms get thrown around more than they should, but there are plenty of times where labels are appropriate depending on what someone says. Obama isn't like the NDP however.

I have no problem with bringing terrorists to justice. I have met Afghan people who have been affected by our bombings. The Afghan people have lived with war for the past 3+ decades. Their country is in ruins. American cluster bombs contnue to injure Afghan children every week.

Also as far as racism goes I say it's a balance, if we can have that with racism, blacks and whites still show racism towards each other in many different ways that shouldn't even matter. Now all I'm asking is let's do as Obama does and respect one another. Also give him a chance and if he screws us, vote him out.

Umm actually it does... I was referring to Red being the Republican color and Blue is Democrats. It's been that way for years. Basically like gang colors. ;-)

"We could have an economy based on ... finding alternatives to oil?"
Alt energy could be a huge economic boon. Have you read Thomas Friedman's 'Hot, Flat and Crowded'? Scores of American engineers with expertise in wind energy tech move to Denmark each year for work. The Danes are far & above anyone when it comes to alt nrg. The U.S. removed its financial incentives for alt nrg. Ergo, the industry flounders here.
Our military contractors have such a stranglehold on things, though.

So which is it alimone32? You realize that by saying they were duped into voting 'Yes' still means they voted 'yes', right? Some are now saying that the 'No on 8' crowd didn't do much campaigning in the African-American community. Likely this is true and exposes a mutual distrust that needs to be mended going forward. Lastly, I'd like to point out that the only reason this demographic is being focused on is because of Obama's victory - there's PLENTY of homophobes from other races too!
