- It's VERY easy to replace the line (string) on a Craftsman V20 battery-powered weedeater. You can also buy pre-wound replacement spools but will pay more. Here are links to those:

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! I'm a newly widowed woman. I bought this weed eater because I couldn't crank my late husband's heavy duty gas powered units. I needed some simple instructions and thankfully I found yours. My weed eater is running again! You are a blessing to me!
Thank you! Great job!
Same reason I’m here
Sir, thank you so much. ☺️
👍😄
Sorry to hear about your husband 😢
You are AWESOME! You kept it simple and straightforward, and didn't try to drag out the video. I am very grateful! THANK YOU!
Glad this helped and I appreciate the kind words!
Yes, clear and to the point
I just have to say, that out of the countless videos I watched, you explained this THE BEST, and made it easy for me (as a woman) to be able to use my weed eater again! Thank You for this video!!
I appreciate the kind words 🙂. Glad I could help get you up and running again!
Thank you for this this video I went to walmart and purchased a 100 feet of the 065 for $ 3.98 and i loaded just as you did ...it worked fine. I am a female and it was a simple process had no problem.
Great job. Glad this helped.
Thank you so much for the video. You made it very easy for this 68 yr old to replace the line on my weedeater. Took less than a minute and was very simple.
Great. Good job!
Man, I think you so much. I just bought my 1st ever battery powered string weed whacker & needed further instructions on using it the correct way. You really helped me a lot. I really appreciate this. Will return if I need help.
Great! Thanks for the note!
Finally! I’ve been searching how to do this. Thank you showing.
Great! Thanks for the comment!
This video is right on time. I will save this to my garden playlist. Thanks 😊
Great!
You're the best, explains everything in one two three. Thank you very much.
You're welcome!
Watched this in anticipation of following your very clear and simple instructions, only to discover that my dad bought me some prewound string when my folks got the weed eater for me to begin with 😂
😁👍 Well, eventually this will come in handy!
Thank you so much!! This worked first try and I’ve never been able to change string before! Single mom over here, thank you!!!
Awesome!
I always bought prewound string. I think I could do this myself and save some money. Thank you.
I'm sure you can do it. And save some money while you're at it. Worst case, you keep buying pre-wound spools.
driving myself nuts trying to spool that damn thing. appreciate the video !
😁👍
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!! This demo was perfect!! 😊❤
Awesome!
Thank you for this viedo, I'm on my own these days, I really need help on how to do this. I finally get to use it now.
Glad this helped. These things are never as hard to do as they appear at first glance.
Thank you sir, specially for putting the link to the pre-wound spool on Amazon.
🙂👍
Thank you! This was very helpful.
Great!
Thank you for making this video - it was supr helpful!
🙂👍
You are the best!! Thank you!!
😁😁
Thank you! I am very great ful for your video!
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your help!!😁
YW!
Thank you. Good video very helpful and to the point.
Thanks!
Thank you for this video , I definitely appreciate it
You're welcome!
Thank you, I was hoping someone would make a video.
Thanks!
You make it look easier than it is to get the rows nice and tight without overlapping. I found it helpful to mount the spool on a shaft in my vice to hold the spool while winding. Do you know how many feet fit on a reel. I started winding out of a 250 feet package but it just became twisted and I had to cut it. Would have been better to pull it out measure and cut it. Thanks
I'm not sure on the exact length. Something like 15 feet. The amount of string on the spool shouldn't extend past the recesses in the plastic part of the spool. That's how to know when the spool is full.
Very helpful, thanks!
YW!
Thank you so much for the info!
YW! 😁
Thanks for helping a widow to keep her weeds at bay
😁👍
Thank you, Sir! Happy Father's Day, if you're a dad.
Thank you. And indeed I am a Dad, so thanks for that!
Thank you!
👍🙂
I recently purchased prewound spools that are the correct model (same link you posted as well as double checked the manual for the trimmer). They look identical to the original spool that came with the trimmer however, I cannot for the life of me get the new spool to sit correctly. Just feels like its stuck on a bump or something and that its not the rize size by like a 1/10 of a millimeter. Driving me nuts! This video was helpful so I could respool the original insert with the new string by feels silly that I cant figure out how to just reseat a new spool correctly?! Any tips? Thanks!!!
Hmmm, that's odd. Have you turned the new spool back and forth when trying to get it to seat? Or maybe there's a little bit of gunk in the head where the spool goes and you just need to clean it out? Or something stuck on the spool that's preventing it from seating properly?
These are just guesses, of course, nut based on your description the new spools are either a tiny bit too tall or there's something physically preventing them from seating in position. I'm not sure what else to recommend.
I’m having the same problem. The spool looks identical, but if I stick my pinky in, the new one is tighter. The old spool goes back on just fine, but the new one won’t go all the way on. Serious design flaw, making the trimmer useless. I’ll try the self winding method, but I don’t know how long those plastic gears are going to hold up. Thanks for the video so I can at least get it to work somehow.
@@Lhogue46 I gave up and just respooled using the original one that fit and the tips in this video. Seems silly but got my yard cleaned up again finally lol
Me too. Ty so much
😀👍
Thanks!
Thank you for the generous gift!
This was so helpful!! Thank you!
🙂👍
great tutorial, How many feet of string can I load?
I don't recall an exact length. Something like 15 feet. The amount of string on the spool shouldn't go past the recesses in the plastic part of the spool. That's how to know when you have enough on the spool.
I bought a Craftsman Weed Eater at a goodwill store. The motor works fine but the .065 mm line feeds out too fast. This weed eater head did not have a tension spring because it is not one of the bump feeder types. This is a corded craftsman weed eater. Do I need a new head or would a tension spring help?
I'd start with replacing the spring if you can find one. That's likely the cause of the problem.
thank you sir
😁👍
Thank You‼️
YW!
Thank you 🎉
🙂👍
I bough 0.065 string with ridges around the circumference and am having trouble getting the string to feed through. You mentioned to only use round string. Could this be the issue?
Yes, that's almost certainly the problem.
Thank you sir.
👍🙂
Thank you for making this. I was a little confused by this set up.
YW!
My cap won’t go back on. I bought a brand new one with spring won’t close. Any tips I have same weed wacker. Great video btw!!
Did you buy a new spool, or just re-string the original spool? It's possible that a replacement spool is a tiny bit bigger than the original and that's what's preventing the cap from going back on. I recommend comparing the width of the new spool to the old spool.
@@FixEverythingYourself so actually it’s the cap you put on once you have re strung the spool the very last part. So the last piece that closes it it broke doing yard work. So I had to get an off brand it seems like same size. So does the spring if just won’t seem to lock in place. Once I push the spring with the circular plastic to close it. Well it just won’t shut down. Not sure what to do. If Maybe I should buy a new spool or just buy an original part instead of off brand version one.
Thank you! Go Eagles!
😁👍
I got .80 and it seems to thick. If I can get it through the first hole before I wind it, is it okay to use it?
I believe this weedeater is only supposed to use 0.065" max. Thicker string will be harder on the motor to turn and will likely wear it out much more quickly. I wouldn't recommend using the thicker stuff
My edger somehow got backwards. The protective cover is on the same side as the handle. I have to hold the edger upside down and contourt my hands to use it. How can I reverse the two or one?
Grab the center black plastic piece (shaped like an hourglass) on the shaft with one hand. Then with your other hand, pull the upper red part of the trimmer out as if you're trying to stretch the length of the trimmer. This will allow the shaft to loosen a little, then you can spin the shaft back to the correct position.
You mustve accidentally turned it at some point.
@FixEverythingYourself Thank you so very much!
Yes, I must've twisted it by mistake.
Thank you! Apparently the pre-wound spools don't fit my particular craftsman model of this string trimmer which is such a pain.
That's a bummer. Did you flip them upside down to see if they go in a different way? Sometimes the spools look the same top and bottom but there's a slight difference that makes them fit one way but not the other.
@@FixEverythingYourself I'm not certain. I was about to buy them, but read many reviews saying they don't fit the CMCST900 model. :(
@@FixEverythingYourself I wanted to let you know I was able to reload string because of your video. Thank you so much!! My Dad would be proud. 😊
Good job! Glad you were able to do it yourself!
I saw a pop-up that said .065 only? I recently got a job working a 3 acre yard the owner calls a "park" I don't want to use gas and I have 4 batteries/ 3 chargers. Can I use .95 serraded?
Craftsman recommends no larger than 0.065" string, so I definitely wouldn't recommend trying 0.095". Also, if you're maintaining a 3-acre yard, this weedeater is going to take a while to do it. Perhaps that's all you have but since this is a one-string type of head, it's much less powerful than the two-string varieties.
Can you replace the whole head? My string doesn't advance.
You can replace the string or the entire spool that the string is wound around. I don't think the head is intended to be replaced. The string may be wound too tightly if it's not advancing.
I can’t get my string to hold the tension. As soon as a put the cap on the spool, it just unwinds. Using 0.065 circle string and following your instructions.
Are you sure you wound the string in the correct direction around the spool? That's usually the cause of the problem you're describing.
Nice hat!
😄👍
Just tried to put in the craftsman RED pre loaded string, but It acts like it wont stay. Its your Battery unit. Have you come across trying to use craftsman 90 mm or xyz instead of 60 ish mm..
Is the string something other than 0.065" round string? If so, the type of string is likely the problem.
What's wrong if it's not automatic feeding the string when it gets short
You have to let it stop spinning, then pull the trigger and get it spinning again for string to come out. The string comes out right as the spool starts spinning after it was stopped.
Just a little comes out at a time so you may have to do it a few times. If that still doesn't work, the string may be bound up inside and needs to be removed and reinstalled.
Can you please explain how to operate the "push button to release line"? I don't know why this is so hard to find online :)
My neighbor lady's weed eater is a similar craftsman model but corded/plug in.
There's a "push button to feed line" - button, yet you can't push that button and trigger at the same time, some safety/lock feature, pushing the button...just pushes the button - I dont see any line come out, and the next time I hit the trigger it doesn't look like any line feeds out.... :)
I'm used to the gas, bop on the ground while hitting the trigger auto-feed feature.
She says with this craftsman it's the same, but you can't do the trigger and feed-button at the same time, and like I said pushing the button while plugged in etc. - doesn't seem to do anything.
Thanks, and good video on stringing.
A tiny bit of string releases every time the trigger is pulled and the head begins to spin from a dead stop. If the string is really short, you may have to stop-start 3-4 times to get enough string to extend. There's no button that releases the string and bumping the head on the ground doesn't work, either.
@@FixEverythingYourself Hey thanks :)
I saw this on my phone and meant to reply later on the laptop.
Craftsman CMEST913 might be the model number, from an google-to-amazon search result.
It's definitely what I'm dealing with, I just don't know if thats the model number or like an amazon sale-listing number etc.
This is the link to the amazon page (below), "20V or electric".
You see the picture with all the labels, the "adjustable handle".....and the "2-in-1 trimmer/edger" (with that bar that folds down)..... and then at the top: "push button feed" (user controls line with push of a button)
... but I swear when you push it the head doesn't move/nothing happens, and the trigger isn't allowed to be pressed at the same time.
I'll try pushing it at a dead stop---trigger, deadstop, push button, trigger...dead stop.....etc., and see if line is weeping out, but I don't think so.

How much string are you suppose to feed out you didnt say how many inches?
I don't recall how long the total amount of string is but the key is to stop winding when the spool gets as wide as shown in the video. But it's probably about 12-15 feet of string.
Mind you i have the measurements you gave. But i still would like to know the actual name of your brand. Thanks
I don't remember the brand I used. However, what's most important is that the package says "ROUND" on it to describe the string (not "twisted" or "square" or any other adjective).
I have links in the Description field to replacement spools from Amazon but those include the plastic spool, not just the string.
The "top" of the spool is missing. Any advice?
Are you referring to the flat red cap that snaps into place to close the string inside after winding? If so, those can be purchased on Amazon.
Here's a link to a cap that comes with replacement spools of string: amzn.to/3Q3kkAp
Here's a link to just the cap itself: amzn.to/4aKI708
I just checked and Lowes sells them, too. So if you're trying to fix it today (you probably are), go to Lowes. About $7
I swear to God, every time I go to buy new pre wound spools from Lowes, I get the wrong damn bundle, so I have to go back to the damn store and return a torn open package. I hate being that customer, but they have two types for sale and only one spool is compatible with my trimmer.
It appears the .080 spindle won't fit into place, but I'm tempted to spool it myself on the old empty spindle I have
Can I not use hexoginal? cause thats what I got...Hexoginal
The instructions say the string should be round. I haven't tried other shapes but considering this is a lower-end model, it's probably pretty touchy when it comes to the type of string.
Everytime I do this the line comes unwound super fast and I blow through it in a few minutes. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.
When that happens it's almost always because the string is wound in the wrong direction on the spool. Try winding the opposite direction of however you've been doing it. You should be able to see the direction I'm winding it in the video. If so, that's the direction to do it.
@@FixEverythingYourself Yeah I made sure i was doing that. But i just realized my string is triangle shaped. I'll try the round string like suggested and hopefully that makes a difference. Thank you for the video!
Ok, great. Maybe it's the triangle string but I'd suspect that somehow the string got on the wrong side of the spool while winding (and got wound in reverse). But sounds like you know what to watch for so good luck!
I bought one of these brand new today, but nothing in the instructions tells you how the string comes out while you’re using it. How do you make the string come out when it breaks?
Just pulling the trigger and having the spool speed up will cause some string to extend. So if you need more string, release the trigger, let the head slow down or stop, then pull the trigger again.
Do that a couple of times, if needed.
I have this very question with mine. This isn’t a bump feeder type of weed trimmer? Some have a button I know but I was thinking you could tap it while it’s running just like many others, but it doesn’t seem to feed more line out.
Correct, this is not a bump-feed unit. Starting from a dead stop extends a little bit of string each time.
I must be doing something wrong. My spool still has the string, every time I.try to pull out to cut grass ,it wind back after 10 seconds of operation.
Make sure the plastic spool isn't upside down inside the head
Hi my craftsman string trimmer who run and the battery is fully charged how can I fix it can someone help me plz
Hard to know without seeing it what could be the problem. Is it nearly new? If you can't fix it, return it. Make sure to push the battery in all the way until it clicks in place.
What string are you using ? Every pack i buy its still too thick. The holes are super tiny. I’ve been to home depot twice 😫
This is an example of the correct string (see my other response, too): amzn.to/3KQJIqf
Thank you soooo much. Really appreciate this. 💪🏾
You're welcome. Also, I just stopped at Lowes, who sells this Craftsman weedeater, and I can't find any string of any brand that will work EXCEPT the pre-wound spools. And of course, those are more expensive than the string would be if they carried it...
Walmart sells a brand called "Weed Warrior". They have a yellow version that's 0.065" and looks like it would work.
Gooo Biiiirds!
😁👍
Mine will not feed automatically. Have to stop and pull out click by click…it is new so everything should be good on it
Same problem bro
@@Tr-bw1fcSAME! So annoying...
I know you said 0.65 inch string I got 0.80 . Having trouble
Yeah, the size I mentioned is the max size that will work.
BO BIRDS BABY 🦅
Yes!
Plus 1 like for the EAGLES hat 🦅
Love it!
Mine doesn’t feed string out, just bought
I suggest taking all of the string out, then re-winding it. Sometimes the string gets stuck on itself inside and won't release.
Nice hat GO EAGLES 😂 thank you for the instructions, problem solved 😁
Great! Going to be another good year for the Birds!
Thank you so much. I recently got a divorce and I refused to call my ex for help. God bless you
Great job! Glad you were able to do this yourself!
Never buying anything craftsman ever again
