Thanks for the vid. This trimmer has been a super pain in my a××. The problem I have with it is I wrap the spool and then turn it on and the string shoots everywhere wrapping around the trimmer. Ive cut the string individually and also have done it the way youve shown. I dont know if Im wrapping too tight or its not tight enough. The fact, yours worked perfectly gives me more excitement to get mine to work. If, I mess up again. Im chucking it because this will be like my 80th time lol. Trimmer makes me feel like a dufus. Thanks for the vid!!
I'm 33 and college educated, but re-stringing my trimmer makes me feel like a total doofus. As soon as I take my string out of the holes, the whole thing unravels, and then I can't close the cover and the string gets stuck and doesn't feed properly.
I am glad youre doing this on the portland trimmer. I have an old electric i replaced wit this. I think buyin prespooled is a waste vs buyin the line. On my old single line it is pretty quick but its a bump feed trimmer.. Wondering if i can jump up to .80 without issues? My old bump feed calls for .65 and i accidentally fot .80 and spooled it and it works fine..
I saw lot of comments and questions about the Portland string trimmer and I was hoping I could help some people out that did not get answers to the questions. First off I’d like to say if you’re having problems with this trimmer it’s not you it’s the trimmer, it is a piece of crap. I started having problems with my trimmer after the first spool ran out, it was a good trimmer out of the box it worked great. I was having problems similar to the problems other people mentioned trying to restring this trimmer and I was not going to let it defeat me. The first thing I noticed during my research is that I was missing the white sleeve and I was sure that that was the cause of the problem after spending a lot of time trying to find that part to purchase I found out that you cannot buy replacement parts for this trimmer from Portland so I made one out of an old aerosol cap and now I don’t know if that white sleeve is even necessary. After that I continue to have problems with the trimmer it would just chop up the whole spool and thinking that I was the problem I continue to try to re-spool which led me to this video. To make a long story short what I figured out was that the trimmer had worn out after the first spool that I used, when you pull the spool out you’ll notice gears at the bottom of the spool and they fit into two tabs inside the trimmer and those tabs had worn out so it was allowing the string to constantly feed while the trimmer was running. I fixed that by drilling two small holes where those tabs are and putting in two very small pins that I had made and now it works fine. I would tell everyone if you’re considering buying this trimmer don’t waste your money spend the extra money and get better quality item.
Thanks Thomas. I am having the same problem . I noticed one of the tabs that the spool rest on (on the spring manual feeder) was worn half off. I used the trimmer for 2 months enough to deplete one spool. So yeah its cheap. I will try your pin remedy. Thanks.
Congratulations, after 10 videos yours was the first one, from a search, that actually showed how to re-string these things. The other nine were worse than useless (or probably more accurately, I was the one that was useless). Saved me getting even worse a headache than I already had.
Ok the video is exactly how I string my unit. Then when I use the unit, the string comes out all at once. What is the problem. Had my son look at it and he put the string in and pooey the same thing happened. He said it looks like a part must be missing. The little white thing in the middle is down correct? Someone please help me find the problem. Thanks
I have WASTED so much time and line on this stupid trimmer. Is there anyone out there who has any advice to prevent this thing from shredding line into little shards and using it all up in 10 seconds?!! I have followed the instructions in this video, and it NEVER cooperates. Worked just fine with the original spool of line that came with it, but I can't get it to work since then. Have wasted so much line trying to rethread it..only to have it shred line over and over.
I'm experiencing the same thing. I was able to get it to work once, but every since then it just shred the new installed line in about 10 seconds like you said. I did restring it backwards and it worked for a little bit longer, but same end result. I do like this trimmer when it works though.
Thanks for this GREAT and SIMPLE Video on Restringing a Dual Line Trimmer!! For some unknown reason, the other videos I watched made this process much more complicated and confusing. Thanks Again!!
Paticia Christian. Portland trimmer. Remember the white plastic cover that comes on the winder ? I don't have that unless it is the white thing inside the string spool help???
I need to add: @ 1:34 The "tabs" you push are not shown by the uploader, and they are not immediately obvious. They are on the side of the reel, and look like a square with a bunch of arrowheads on them (ie: >>>> ) They are the same color as the rest of the reel, so if you don't look closely, or there is not enough light, you won't see them. Once you push these... the reel comes off VERY EASILY. If you are struggling, you are not pushing on the right spot.
I get everything except WHERE the notch is to anchor before restringing. I have the anchor-notches, but where do you "hook" string initially? I have a Toro 14 inch Electric Trimmer (which I will never buy again--terrible instructions). Great video! Yours was only instructional that showed how to replace with needed details.
I purchased this weed wacker about 2 months ago. It is a piece of junk and that is not the word I want to use. The line constantly unravels within the spool. I have to constantly unraveled it and reset the twine. Or the twine uses up all 9 ft within 5 to 10 minutes and I don't understand how that keeps happening.. it is a waste of money do not buy it.
With Sears on its way out I've been scrambling to find replacement spools for my Craftsman dual head trimmer. Pretty much out of stock everywhere you look. I've tried rewinding the spool myself but could never get it right. Thank you for an *easy* to follow tutorial.
I followed these directions exactly - the first 4 times the spool came completely unwound before I could even snap the cap back on.. the 5th time I got the cap on but *THE SECOND* I started using it, all 9' of line got shredded into 3" pieces and rained down on my like ash from a volcano eruption.. I'm clearly doing something wrong.
I got this trimmer today and have similar issues - the entire string comes out within 30 seconds or so. Please let me know if you have found a solution. Many thanks.
I did it the same way and started weed whacking. 20 feet later, all the string came out and that was the end. Had to start over again. How do you stop that from happening?
I just purchased one of these trimmers and I have to say your demonstration worked better for me than the included instructions. I feel confident now I can restring effectively. Thank you.
Bought this trimmer at Harbor Freight and for the price its not bad but i will never get an auto feed trimmer again. I prefer the bump feed trimmers, i find i use much more string with this than needed.
I gave up trying after getting stung in the face with string spitting out at me. Now I need to find a video showing how to disassemble the spool to unravel 9ft of string from underneath it. Grrrr
There's a million videos showing how to restring one with the spool with the holes inside but this is the first one I found where you wrap it round the notch. Took 2 minutes to do after watching your video, thank you 👍
Your weed eater seems close to my Greenworks one but it seems like the spool on yours has better thought in the design! I like how yours has the holes you can string through it! The final end cap that covers the strings seems so much less complicated . But I am not sure if you have put the top channel string over the lowest channel ! Which I am not happy with on mine! I just have to keep re-stringing over and over again n again! I am kind of loathing to rout the ends of my grass to trim it because I’ll have to take that damn double spool out of the weed eater and dicker with it over n over again n again . Maybe I should go to a therapist. I just hope he or she doesn’t work for GreenWorks!
Mine is Harbor Freight, the instructions refer to a white sleeve, but mine like the video of Bob, has none. Seems in this version of the model, you use the notches to temporarily hold the strings while pooling through the silver holes.
So mine, like others here, talks about a white sleeve that is not in the video. Mine never had it so I just moved ahead without it. I followed the instructions and your video to a tee! As soon as I start it up, all the line comes out and gets chopped into small pieces. I've gone through almost an entire roll of line and not been able to trim anything. Very frustrating.
Respool your line the other way, and put tension on the line when wrapping fresh lines! Same thing happened to me! Look at the arrows on top of the black spool.
thank you so much. my 1st time using a trimmer. the factory package was strung wrong so it kept cutting off. Your tutorial is so easy and precise. My 1st time using was yesterday, and I will play around with it in my backyard until I get the hang of how to properly angle for edging and trimming.
Wonderful video. I've restrung many trimmer's in my day, but have never seen one without a whole inside. This was the easiest restring I've ever done. Thanks.
Bought this same exact Portland trimmer from Harbor Freight a while back. Had to restring just today after weeds popping up like crazy. Your video helped out massively! Thank you so much! 😎👍
Just respooled mine with .80 instead of .65 and did exactly as shown and did it no problem. You don't need the white sleeve, mine didnt have it. The key when spooling it is to keep tension the whole time so it doesnt unwind.
I own this trimmer also and it does a pretty good job. As far as restringing goes, I thought one of the two ends of line followed the arrow, and the bottom end went in the opposite direction. I will give your method a try to see how well it works. Fussing with the spool and the line is the major drawback of these trimmers, anything that makes it easier is a life saver!
Bob, no offense but this was about as clear as mud. 1) you are putting both strings in one notch, separate notches? 2) how did you get the bottom line back up and out of the hole? need to dumb this down for us people who have not only never ever restrung a weed eater but never ever even used one before. but kudos for the attempt, it is appreciated. take 2.
Thank you so much. Not only do you CLEARLY show how to do it you also do the proper method. I watched other people cut the string individually and it was just a pain to do.
I just bought my second of these trimmers at Harbor Freight for $26.99. I broke the first one by putting larger line on it that I had laying around and the heavier string caused the little plastic pins in the automatic feeder to shear off. I can probably replace that piece for cheap, but $27 for brand new ain't so bad. Just gotta make sure to only use the recommended line size to prevent this in the future.
I noticed you did use the white collar that comes with the unit, at least it did with mine. It has openings for the string ends to pass through before you insert it into the trimmer head.
I tried this every which way and every time the string either unspools itself as soon as I try thread it through the holes or as soon as start the trimmer the line comes completely out and shreds into 100 little pieces
somehow the string just disintegrates almost within a minute ! Any suggestions ??? I did it like you said . I also wondered the arrows on the spool go in one direction but the arrows of the cap go in another ! Also the trimmer mentions a white plastic cover I dont seem to have that but mine is identical to yourS.
@@yordanpopov I'm having the same problem and I did take them out of the notches. The wire just unwinds or as the others have said...eats it away quickly.
I have this trimmer and it was my first time to restring it. I tried following the crap instructions on the trimmer but couldn't figure it out. If this was an IQ test I failed until I watched your video and got it the first time after watching your video. Thank you
Hello Bob! Thanks for this very informative and clear video on How to restring this trimmer. Like Phoenix, here in Central Florida-Casselberry city it is a year round "Honey do list" job!!!! Again, thanks!! Joe -K4JGA
Thank you for this video. I received this trimmer as a gift from a neighbor lady who couldn't do her yard work anymore. She hired me to take care of her yard and the trimmer helped things out (also gave me a leaf blower and some extension cables). I had trouble figuring out how to string the trimmer. :D
Thank you for this video. I don't think I would have figured this out with this video. My elderly dad bought this weed whacker and threw out the instructions. He was getting ready to throw this away before I was able to get it set up via your video 👍🏽
Mine repeatedly went undone when I bought the string trimmer. It says to use the plastic collar which it didn't have. After three failed trimmers, I returned and got my money back.
You need to keep tension on the string the ENTIRE time. Mine doesnt have a white sleeve and I upgraded to thicker string. Took all of about 3 minutes.. Once you feed through the holes you have to keep tension and then click the head onto it.. Most trimmers are like that, if you dont keep tension they loosen and unwind from the spool
@@Mixwell1983 I returned it last year and got a black and Decker. It has only one string going out and I love it. I've had zero issues with it so far. I got it on clearance from Lowes.
Incredible. This was buried under a tonne of results for buying ready strung spools and strimmers. Big Strim doesn’t want us to know how to restring our strimmers
Maya Kebede there's a little black button on the base of the spool housing called a manual feed button that allows you to pull-feed the string if you give it a couple of presses while pulling one of the strings.
@@sainhadam1478 So I'm supposed to use the button to manually pull out the string each time the line gets short? I thought it was supposed to release automatically.
Thanks for the vid. This trimmer has been a super pain in my a××. The problem I have with it is I wrap the spool and then turn it on and the string shoots everywhere wrapping around the trimmer. Cut it
Do you leave the ends in those notches after U string and insert back into the mower, or release the ends before replacing the spool cap?
Take ends out notches to push string into the holes on trimmer

BTW, on your white board, you have spelled 'Duel', like a sword fight, and the title is Dual, like the trimmer's head.

Exactly the problem I'm having. Mine string keeps getting tangled. I will try it with tighter tension.
Incredible. This was buried under a tonne of results for buying ready strung spools and strimmers. Big Strim doesn’t want us to know how to restring our strimmers
What not sure how to re-spool the trimmer so thanks for the awesome video. I am going back outside to finish trimming my overgrown yard.
Dude my wallet and I salute you. Thank you.
My string broke right away
My string keeps getting eaten down to little nubs and I have to keep taking it a part to pull more string out. Is this normal?
Maya Kebede there's a little black button on the base of the spool housing called a manual feed button that allows you to pull-feed the string if you give it a couple of presses while pulling one of the strings.
@@sainhadam1478 So I'm supposed to use the button to manually pull out the string each time the line gets short? I thought it was supposed to release automatically.
What brand of line do you recommend using?
I did this but once through the holes I tugged to tighten but it unwound. What’s did I do wrong?
Gonna weed wack tomorrow....had this for 2 years...mines came with a white outer ring...
Thanks for simple showing all steps easy understanding
Finally some one who shows the proper way🤣👍like.
Thank you so much for the tutorial! Done waiting on other people to help me lol 😂
This trimmer is garbage the string never feeds correctly
Thanks Bob. Saved me money and time. Now I enjoy yardwork thanks to you! Take care😎
GRERAT VIDEO A GREAT HELP. DID YOU USE THE NOTCHES BEFORE YOU THREADED THROUGH THE FEEDER HOLE OR DO YOU NOT NEED TO USE THE NOTCHES ?
Mine keeps letting out a ton of string when I start it . I must be missing a step but I can’t find it
