Had the pleasure of seeing Mudvayne in their early days. Ryan is amazing to see live. "Severed" from LD 50 has always been a favorite and it has great lines. Crazy drop tuning for the guitar, I'm the bass does as well 🤙
Not sure if anyone cares but this is a radio edit, so a couple of abbreviated sections (intro and bridge). And what's the time signature in the verse? 2 bars of 4/4 and a bar of 2/4? Great tune!
Great reaction and breakdown man, your face when you listen to Ryan is so rapt and happy, its fun to watch. Keep up the great work and keep exploring Mudvayne.
The first two Mudvayne albums are BY FAR the only two of their records I can still listen to now. LD 50 and The End... are really interesting and way less typical "heavy rock" that they end up veering into.
If you want something from one of Mudvayne's later albums, you should do a listen and study on "A New Game" from their 4th album, The New Game. That shines as far as Ryan's playing IMO.
Forget to Remember is a great one of their later offerings that was popularized from its presence on the Saw soundtrack. It's from Lost and Found, so the bass isn't mixed as high as I'd like it, but Ryan has some great melodies that really carry the song. Separately, I'd be really interested in hearing you do some more Incubus breakdowns with their original bass player, Dirk Lance aka Alex Katunich! I think he was a big inspiration for all of the people our age.
@@RyanGriffiths-r9k Yes although while Gouge Away is a great song, I don't think it'd be much of an interesting song to anlalyze the bass for. Debaser and Hey are better choices.
@@mountaverage2706 i thought same thing about gouge away when I first wanted to suggest songs. I didn't (and still don't) know why. Yet it's ranked the best bass of the pixies. I think it's the rhythm count over the notes. I definitely agree that Hey is the best pixies song for this channel For record: Planet of sound, debaser and gigantic, hey, gougue away top five
Awesome job breaking this down Now you got to do some tunes from their New Game and self-titled albums. Dull Boy, Do What You Do, Same Ol, or All Talk (they don’t have a video for that one but it’s a good song from their later catalog)
First, I agree with other people saying you need to hear the album version, but second, I have never seen a video that clearly shows him playing this, so I've watched some covers on YT. You might want to check some of them out because it's truly an amazing piece and when you see how much work he's doing it'll only increase your appreciation for Ryan (and the people who manage to play it as well).
Love your videos! great pick of songs always! I'd request some Corrosion Of Conformity! Mike Dean is easily one of my favorite bass players, he recently left the band to work on his own stuff! But i'd love to see your breakdown on his work, as to which song that's a tough choice for me, Albatross is easily one of their most popular songs, Bass wise tho Born again for the last time is probably my fave
Severed from LD50 100%. There is no music video and it’s a little longer than some other songs but when I think Mudvayne bass that’s what I think. The lines are so good especially the intro bass line.
So on LD 50 he originally recorded with a 4 string in drop B but would eventually play with a 5 string while having the higher strings still in drop B On The End Of All Things To Come he would bring back that 4 string in drop C And them on Lost and Found and thought the rest of his career he'd have a 5 String or a plethora of 5 Strings in G standard
Hey man great video. Have you checked out the band Chat Pile? I’m no bass player so it may not be that interesting but it sounds cool. Frownland and Funny Man from the new album might be fun.
Educated guesswork here, but the track sounds to me like they probably recorded using a 4x12" or 4x10" bass cab with a center tweeter and two microphones (one over a woofer, one over a tweeter), with the mix only bringing in the tweeter mic over the chorus.
Hi again. It would be so great to watch a reaction to a German Band...especially Punk. And who are the Godfathers of German Punk? Right...WIZO!!! Please do "Grauer Brei", the first Song of their recent Album "Nichts wird wieder gut" Love your Work ❤
I really enjoy this song by Mudvayne cuz again the super strong and tight musicianship and the prominent bass... this album is kinda like more of LD50 but with better production. Not my preferred version of the music video though... there is another version that is kinda themed after an Alien Abduction.
I think a lot of the bass tone and overall tonal differences come from Dave Bottril being a the helm. Albums he has produced definitely have a particular sound, and personally I think of his work this album and Tool's Lateralus are his best sounding work.
This wasn't even the original video for this song. The original has them dressed as an alien species ripping themselves out of containment vessels. If I recall, that video has a different sound to it. I believe the audio for this video was re-mixed.
This video is missing parts of the song. I know you want to watch Ryan play but these videos all have "radio edits" done to them. The middle breakdown is longer on the album. They also have a separate video for this song which was more in line with the sound and vibe of the album. I never saw this one. I can't believe they made this under a month! It's probably my favorite album but sadly the last album of theirs I really liked. They had a few songs later on but as they got more successful their songs became more "radio friendly" and no longer appealed to me who liked the heavier more proggy stuff
@LowEndUniversity what do you got in the infrasonic category? I'm in to guitar myself, but also love a good 20hz sinewave...I'm gonna be hooking something up to my car audio system in the near future. Ever experience infrasonics @ 150 Decibels +++
I hate to be that guy, but I've heard you use the word "accidental" to refer to outside notes a few times. An accidental just refers to a sharp or a flat. The key of G major has one accidental, as does the key of F major. Notes from outside of the key can either be borrowings from other keys or modes (i.e. an A natural in an otherwise C minor tonality can be a borrowing from C Dorian or C melodic minor, depending on context), or just simply playing "outside". Other than that, I've been digging the videos.
Glad you dig the videos, really appreciate that! Respectfully, that’s incorrect. Also, when looking up the properties of ‘accidentals’, here’s what it reads: “Accidentals alter the pitch of individual scale tones in a given key signature; *the sharps or flats in the key signature itself are not considered accidentals.”* This aligns with the schooling I’ve received. Accidentals step outside of the native key signature briefly, and quickly return when a new theme or phrase is introduced. This is also why when a new bar begins, the accidental can be ignored moving forward, as it’s overwritten by the key signature itself. This overwriting rule implies the short-term nature of accidentals.
Seeing a lot of "Severed" comments, definitely haven't heard that one! I think just Dig, Death Blooms, Nothing to Gein, and Pharma-something if I recall.
i can play a few mudvayne songs, but i have been trying to get the verses down for this song for a long time. i dont know what it is that trips me up? i dont practice it as much as i should. usually just move on after a little whiile. i dont like to get too stuck on one song. awesome song though. maybe ill get it some day?
You sure will! Keep at it. There's a lot of rhythmic variation in his parts that may feel kind of random at first, but it's really married to the kick drum pattern for a lot of it. It's tough to chase his style down, he's constantly moving. Keep listening and look for any patterns you can across those four chords in the verses!
Severed from LD 50 is a must!
Such a great bassline on that song
100% agree. Also one of my most favorite Mudvayne songs.
If you like the bass front songs you gotta check out World so Cold. Absolutely beautiful bass writing on that song
Came here to recommend this. Awesome bass in this song.
Had the pleasure of seeing Mudvayne in their early days. Ryan is amazing to see live. "Severed" from LD 50 has always been a favorite and it has great lines. Crazy drop tuning for the guitar, I'm the bass does as well 🤙
I saw them this year and he is still amazing to watch. maybe the most over-looked bassist in metal history.
Love this tune. The simple switch from single notes to chords on the chorus get me every time
Great album. Glad to see you visiting this one.
Yay! My recommendation! Love the channel, homie 😊
Not sure if anyone cares but this is a radio edit, so a couple of abbreviated sections (intro and bridge). And what's the time signature in the verse? 2 bars of 4/4 and a bar of 2/4? Great tune!
you should be listening to the actual album version. this is the radio version that cut like 30 sec out of it.
I thought the end sounded odd.
Yeah, it cuts most of the bridge out too, which has some a sweet build-up.
And sweet bass playing in the stuff that was cut
Out to pasture from self titled, don't believe anyone has done anything off that album,we appreciate the great work and respect,ty so much
I see you have some new wall art. Congrats, dude!
Great reaction and breakdown man, your face when you listen to Ryan is so rapt and happy, its fun to watch. Keep up the great work and keep exploring Mudvayne.
SEVERED! Super complex song with unique vibe and very creative bass melodies!
End Of All Things To Come 9/10 album for sure!
10/10

Underrated song. Was also used on the movie "ghost ship" which was also underrated.
"a key to nothing" from their TEOATTC album has some really awesome bass work!
I loce seeing you do Mudvanye because it reminds me how much I them. Especially this album and Ryan's tone.
I am extremely happy to see this reaction this morning, and I’m only 0:01 second in. LETS GOOOO
Definitely check out Silenced from this album and Severed from LD50
The bass solos in patient mental and perversion of a truth r beautiful
Try PDA-Interpol it is awesome
Have you done s pixies song yet? The band that inspired Kurt Cobain. If not the songs Hey; Debaser; Gouge Away
All those good
@@RyanGriffiths-r9k Yes although while Gouge Away is a great song, I don't think it'd be much of an interesting song to anlalyze the bass for. Debaser and Hey are better choices.

Although debaser more pixies bass sound in general
Wave of Mutilation UK Mix is the GOAT.
This album is the best!
@3:30 he does that with his other band, Soften The Glare. Those two guys are old school rockers and then you throw Ryan in.
Awesome job breaking this down
Now you got to do some tunes from their New Game and self-titled albums.
Dull Boy, Do What You Do, Same Ol, or All Talk (they don’t have a video for that one but it’s a good song from their later catalog)
Really interesting ! So much knowledge, so insightful. Thank you! Just finished YYZ, What a difference in sound next to each other. Love it!
Glad it was helpful!! 🙏🏼
There's a behind the recording video of the guitar player and drummer trying to explain the rhythms of this song

Always loved the galloping bass lines of Helloween: could you review one of their song? Twilight of the Gods and Eagle Fly Free being my favourites
Hi, please check out The Fall of Reason by Watchtower, this is prog/thrash metal band.
GREAT VIDEO BRO !!! HAVE YOU HEARD "DEATH BLOOMS" ??? EXCELLENT BASS PERFORMANCE !!!!
Thanks! Yes, I did that one awhile back here: ua-cam.com/video/SZwECVKF8h4/v-deo.html

IMN from Lost and Found is a favorite of mine, Ryan does some really cool stuff in that one.
From L.D. 50; (k)now F(orever). My opinion, the single best song they ever wrote.
Severed from LD50 100%. There is no music video and it’s a little longer than some other songs but when I think Mudvayne bass that’s what I think. The lines are so good especially the intro bass line.
do "-1" from their LD50 album
So on LD 50 he originally recorded with a 4 string in drop B but would eventually play with a 5 string while having the higher strings still in drop B
On The End Of All Things To Come he would bring back that 4 string in drop C
And them on Lost and Found and thought the rest of his career he'd have a 5 String or a plethora of 5 Strings in G standard
Great video man!
You should definitely check out Under My Skin from L.D. 50.
You should check out Shadows Fall - Thoughts Without Words, Paul Romanko is a bassist all should see and hear play.
"Everything and nothing" and "severe" from LD 50, PLEASE!
Such a good song. Ryans melodic playing is more akin to lead guitar. Id love to see you react to Ghosts by Big Wreck.
You should check out the band Augury from Canada. Absolute top knotch musicianship.
Ghost Ship, IYKYK 🤘
That's where I found this song when I was like 11 :D
Respect, professor!
I'm not really into metal but I really love this album.
Ryan Martinie, the lone man who helped Warwick sell more Thumb basses than any other artist!
do the album, the whole thing is a treat
By the way Mark, your Warwick sounds great!
I learned this on guitar and it is in Drop C, CGCFAD, so Ryan might have his D tuned down to C to match Greg's guitar.
Hey man great video. Have you checked out the band Chat Pile? I’m no bass player so it may not be that interesting but it sounds cool. Frownland and Funny Man from the new album might be fun.
Love Chat Pile! New album is killer.
AGREED. I hope Mark sees this. Frownland, Funny Man, Pamela..so many good tracks. Stin is self -taught and has KILLER tone.
Educated guesswork here, but the track sounds to me like they probably recorded using a 4x12" or 4x10" bass cab with a center tweeter and two microphones (one over a woofer, one over a tweeter), with the mix only bringing in the tweeter mic over the chorus.
suggestion- Kajagoogoo - Too Shy , even f you don't like the song, I think you'll respect the bass in this one
You should check out some Coal Chamber. Similar sort of style
Hi again. It would be so great to watch a reaction to a German Band...especially Punk. And who are the Godfathers of German Punk? Right...WIZO!!! Please do "Grauer Brei", the first Song of their recent Album "Nichts wird wieder gut"
Love your Work ❤
How about taking a complete U Turn from metal and checking out Atomic by Blondie? Funky dance tune with a cool little bass solo.
How about The Vandals Oi to the world as a Christmas special. 😉

I clicked so fast when I saw mudvayne. Nice
Ld50 is the best but if you’re looking for a more recent album from them then you should cover the song “dull boy” it’s got a cool bass line in it.

-1 from LD 50 is a good one
This is a truncaded version of the song! you need the better longer video!
Do yourself the favor and check out severed of LD50 or if you wanna do a newer song from them, listen to dull boy.
Seeing a lot of "Severed" comments, definitely haven't heard that one! I think just Dig, Death Blooms, Nothing to Gein, and Pharma-something if I recall.
They cut so much out of the bridge. What a shame. Best part of the song.

Seriously though he is such an underrated bass player. His tuning makes it so much easier
You win! 🥇 - and, yeah, the verse riff is super tough in standard going from C to Eb so quickly. I just pedaled on the root!
